In this episode, I speak with author Leslye Penelope about her latest novel, The Monsters We Defy, set in Washington DC during the 1920s shortly after the DC riot of 1919. People are disappearing from an all-Black community in Washington, DC and they all seem to go into a zombie-like trance right before disappearing. Clara Johnson, a woman who can communicate with spirits, decides to solve this mystery after several people from her community come to her asking for help. And what comes after is a whodunnit, Agatha Christie-type story with twists, turns and lots of magic as Clara and her team of unlikely allies-- including a hypnotic jazz musician and an aging actor with the ability to change his face--race against time to solve an insidious mystery that could change the fate of the entire city. Audra Russell speaks with author and leader Terrance Lee. Terrance Lee, AKA The Introvert Leader had always avoided taking on leadership roles in his life. At the age of 13, an experience occurred which caused him to doubt his ability to speak in front of people, and caused him to shy away from the spotlight. This worked for Terrance until he eventually had to learn leadership skills by necessity at his first engineering job out of college. When he had been working in his first role for a short time, his mentor put in his two-week notice. Terrance then found out that he had to take his place presenting to a group of experienced engineers and pilots for a highly technical review. Despite feeling extremely nervous, the meeting that Terrance led went well; which gave him a giant confidence boost. Since then, Terrance has taken on many leadership and management roles as an introvert at several Fortune 500 companies in the defense industry, with proven results. He utilizes his platform to empower introverts to tap into their own inner leadership potential and is never shy about sharing the tips that he has learned throughout his journey. We get into the mind of an introvert, discuss how introverts make better leaders, dispel myths about the introvert personality, and Terrance shares how to step into your power as an introvert. Audra Russell speaks with author A.J. Ross. A.J. Ross is a Detroit-born and bred English teacher turned author. Writing since childhood, Ross thrived on the idea of creating her own worlds beyond the confines of the society she was born into. That desire led her to the world of Science-fiction, Superheroes, and Fantasy; mostly because these were the first worlds where she saw people like her. (Storm from X-men, Star Trek's Uhura and Geordi Lafordge, Star Wars Lando Calrissian, to name a few...) Stories where black characters weren’t a “type.” They were individuals who existed in a world with the same advantages and disadvantages as the others around them. As a writer, her goal is to reimagine and challenge the principles we as a society tout, to see whether they hold up under different circumstances. She is committed to telling stories with diverse characters, compelling narratives, and enough drama to entertain even the most casual readers. We dig into House of Rahilius and talk about weapons, parallels between slavery on Earth and other planets, love triangles, and hints of what's coming in the rest of the series! Audra Russell speaks with author and poet Ludy Wooten. Ludy Wooten is a creative thinker and writer. Her passion for writing began at an early age. She was born in Haiti and moved to the United States at the age of 6. Her love for writing stemmed from having to learn English as a second language. She would spend hours enamored with the English language through watching shows like Sesame Street, listening to music, and watching videos. She became captivated by how they would use language to not only help her learn to speak the language but to create stories. So, as a child, she began to use language to write her own narratives through song, poetry writing, and writing short stories. Her passion for writing led her to Rutgers University where she majored in English literature. Her dream has always been to write a book of poetry. She hopes her poetry will cause her readers to get lost in the words in order to find themselves. She hopes her readers will be able to walk away drawing their own meaning out of her writing and lean into a greater version of themselves. In this episode, we take a deep dive into her poetry, the inspiration behind it, and have way too much fun laughing at this thing called life! She even accused me of having multiple husbands, y'all! Audra Russell chats with authors and poets Chyrel Jackson and Lyris Wallace. Chyrel J. Jackson and Lyris D. Wallace are avid lovers, readers and writers of African American Literature. They grew up in a Southern Suburb of Chicago, IL. Country Club Hills. As young girls they read Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Judy Blume novels. College was the real scholastic awakening introducing these two Literary Enthusiasts to the Literary works of their great ancestors: James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou and others. These writers influenced Chyrel and Lyris so much, it only makes sense that they would now be writing in the Spirit of these ancestors and giving a voice to social issues that plague our modern time. Their latest self-published work a book of poetry is Different Sides of the Same Coin. It is a modern and sassy collage of poetry as experienced from the Black female perspective of two sisters and authors. This timeless collection of poems is a refreshing, soul-searing and heartwarming work of new age black voice and spoken word. Black Expression has never been more vibrant, relevant and real. In this anthology of poems it is Harlem Renaissance revisited as it collides with 2020 social struggles and conditions of our current time. Writers are born when life intersects with time and chance. You will always find them doing what they love reading, and writing. Writing, and telling stories is how they fulfill their divine purpose. You can’t ignore what is so visible and undeniable. Writing saved us at our lowest points in living. We hope to provide healing through our writing. We want to uplift others through their pain as writing has uplifted us and provided great healing in time of profound despair and hurt. Throughout the passage of time words remain. We have a heartfelt talk about their book of poetry, Different Sides of the Same Coin. We laugh, I cry, and we bond. Audra Russell speaks with horror author Justin Q. Young. When it comes to Justin "Q" Young, you might see the author of several best-selling titles on the surface, but there is so much more than meets the eye. Young arrived on the literary scene in 2014 with the debut novel, Move Dat Doe. He took his career to new heights when he tapped into his erotic side with the best-selling series, Dickmitized. Audra Russell speaks with Christian fiction author D.A. Bourne. D.A. Bourne is the author of The Phat Five series and DON'T PUSH ME. His goal as a writer is to bring integrity and faith through urban fiction. D.A's latest release, DON'T PUSH ME, was inspired by the social justice movement of 2020. It was a Sunday following the George Floyd tragedy that he was listening to a sermon series at his home church called "Silent No More". It had such a spiritual impact on D.A. that he stopped writing Book 4 of The Phat Five series and immediately began to write a story about a group of autoworkers that deal with racial conflict. D.A currently lives in the Greater Toronto Area with his wife, four children, and a cast of characters that stay awake in his mind 24/7! D.A. and I talk about his thought-provoking new novel, Don't Push Me, and have a heartfelt discussion about race relations. Audra Russell chats with author Michelle Richards-Graham. While her dream of becoming an author had been sparked when she was 6 years old, Michelle Richards-Graham had no idea that her worst nightmare would become the inspiration behind her very first book. She wrote the first draft of her novel It Could Never Happen to Me when she was 14 years old after being molested. Through her writing and with the support of loved ones, Michelle was able to overcome and decided to publish the book in 2004 when she was in her early twenties. Her love of writing remained strong, and she went on to publish two more YA books: Sweet & Sour Honey and The Eastbrook Diaries, which also deal with realistic coming-of-age subject matter. We take a deep dive into The Eastbrook Diaries, and how writing her YA novel, It Could Never Happen to Me, is helping to start much-needed conversations about the trauma of being molested. Audra Russell chats with author Keith Kareem Williams. Keith Kareem Williams is the author of over 20 books and 7 screenplays. He still resides in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York, where he delicately balances his time between his responsibilities as a single father and the challenges of being a full-time author. In interviews, one of the most difficult questions he’s been asked is, ‘What genre are your novels?’ because honestly, he never writes with any particular style in mind. He enjoys blending styles and mashing different genres together in interesting ways. Basically, he pens whatever is in his heart and soul. However, if he had to describe his style, he would use musical terms and say that he writes Urban, Hip-Hop fiction with the rhythm of Reggae that crashed into Heavy Metal and then began to bleed Neo-Soul. He calls it Alternative Urban Fiction .© We discuss his writing career and get in between the pages of Hurricane Love and The War Angel Trilogy. So grab your favorite beverage, get cozy, and enjoy! Audra Russell chats with author and entrepreneur N.D. Brennan. In 1998, a successful young entrepreneur, technology innovator, and writer, N.D. Brennan, attempted to purchase a Mercedes Benz from a local dealership in Atlanta, Georgia. It was after he had been credit approved, that this young radical, cornrowed professional African American man was suddenly approached by the owner of the dealership. Mr. Brennan had purposely deviated from his traditional corporate appearance of a low-cropped haircut to a well-groomed braided hairstyle. His reasoning: "I was tired of watching white people assume that every black man with gold teeth, dreadlocks, or braided hair was a gangster or thug and ignorant." That day lead to a pivotal question raised in his consciousness: "I wonder what America would be like if white people had been slaves; or if our history was theirs?" In this episode, N.D. and I chat about his debut novel, Reciprocal, where he created this world he wondered about -- and the complex emotions it evokes. Chelsea is a twenty-something writer of romance who dibbles and dabbles in fantasy and dystopian – the genre can change as long as she is exploring relationships and what it means to have a connection with other people. She has been writing since she was 14 and it’s what she loves to do. Keeping Promises is the first book of many she plans to write. She is the host of the Melanin Chat on the Written in Melanin YouTube channel, where she discusses things as they pertain to books and writing, and interviewing authors. Chelsea also facilitates a private community where writers can network and connect with other authors to grow the writing craft together. She has strong addictions to coffee, laughter, and words in every form – books, music, podcasts, subtitles on anime – it doesn’t matter! She twilights as Mrs. Otaku on the I’d Rather Anime Podcast, a podcast that she hosts with her husband, where they rant about anime that they watch just because they enjoy being nerds together. They have been married five years and live in Dallas, Texas with their dog, Alphonse Elric. Janee' Thompson writes realistic young adult and new adult novels that capture the unique experiences of young black men and women taking it day by day through their own personal struggles. While many popular novels for this target audience focus on racial tension and navigating racial oppression through a youthful perspective, Janee' intentionally creates masterpieces that desensationalize racial trauma and focus solely on characters' individuality amid their blackness.
