Send us a text As a man who works with other men on issues of improving as men, getting better as husbands and fathers, and doing that with a foundation of Jesus, faith, and Christianity, something that comes up often are discussions about the core concepts of masculinity. Today is Maundy Thursday, which is also known as Holy Thursday. It is a significant day in this holy week, moving towards Good Friday, and the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. By the way, the word Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum , which means command and is in reference to Jesus’ commandment to love one another. Now you might be wondering, What’s the connection here between Maundy Thursday and masculinity? --- To get the Significant Man INTEL series, click here: https://SignificantMan.com/intel

Send us a text One of the most important things for a man is to not do life in isolation. It’s critical to have other men who will have your back, men you can do life together with. From celebrating the high points to supporting during the low points, this life was not meant to be lived alone. My guest today is Theo Zhuang. Times were tough for him as a child, growing up in Venezuela from the age of 3 to 10 as his parents were missionaries, which was a difficult environment for a boy. And growing up as a pastor’s kid didn’t help him during those years, but began his discovery of his own identity, life purpose, and calling. God brough him through various life experiences, from volunteering, to disaster relief, and in each he had an opportunity to take a giant leap of faith. Learning about himself from the inside out, he realized that he was created with unique gifts that made working as a transformational coach and leading the Noble Father community extremely fulfilling. Send us a text Today’s episode of the podcast is going to be a little bit different. Normally on this show, I have something planned, something written out, something specific that I’m going to share with the folks who are listening, but this is going to be different. As someone who talks about all sorts of issues, all sorts of topics for Christian men, I get asked a lot of random-seeming questions. So what I’m going to do on the show today is I’m going to respond to, I’m going to answer a handful of those different questions. This will be a wide range of topics, with me sharing my thoughts on different issues, on things that get asked to me, as they all relate to Christian men. This will be a little bit more free-flowing, and should be a whole lot of fun, so let’s get started. Here are the questions answered: Advice to husbands and wives about men fixing things in the relationship? What are the different types of Bible Translations? What is a main challenge that men face today? What is something from Christianity that I struggle with? What is something from Christianity that I don’t struggle with? What are my favorite Old and New Testament books? Who am I going to vote for? How do I deal with haters online? Send us a text In our house, we never lie. At least that’s what I hear dads often tell me. But, is that true? Is it accurate to say that we never lie in this house? It’s actually very common for parents to lie to their own children. And is that bad? Is it wrong every time a parent lies? Does it need to stop? Are you telling your kids these lies, and maybe not even realizing that you are? And where do we go from there? That’s what today’s episode is all about… so let’s get started. Send us a text We live in challenging times. Turn on the news or check the newsfeed and it seems like there is story after story of chaos, of war, and of disease and death. Then there are the stories of political unrest and economic unrest. Inflation is out of control. The future is so uncertain. It can seem like there is darkness everywhere you look. And then, bringing it in closer to home, for far too many men their homes are not the peaceful oasis they have hoped for. Inside the house there is fighting, there is anger, there is sadness, and there is confusion. It can certainly make things seem impossible to navigate. How is a man supposed to lead his family through all this? How are you supposed to do that in such a world? Where do you get the strength to do this? Send us a text Over the years of leading events for men and working with men, something common that comes up is questions about the Bible. There are so many questions. Who wrote it? When was it written? Who was it written to? How is it structured? What are the Old and New Testaments about? What are the individual books about? And tons more. Because of these kinds of questions, I’ve written a new book called the Tactical Guide to the Bible , available at Amazon right now. And in today’s episode, I’m going to answer some of these big questions about the Bible. .. so, let’s get started. Questions answered in this episode: What is the Bible? How is the Bible structured? Who wrote the Bible? When was the Bible written? There is so much more than one short episode can cover, exploring the Bible is a lifelong journey. Send us a text If there is a topic that seems to never be, or rarely is, discussed in church, it is the topic of suicide. There isn’t much that is more heartbreaking than suicide. And the impact is far more reaching than the one life that was lost. Family members, friends, co-workers, people in the community, and future generations are all affected by one person’s choice. I’m in the middle of a series on Christian men, the church, and mental health and today I’m going to dig into this important topic of suicide and the church. Send us a text I’m joined today by Mike Grimes as he shares his thoughts and experience of being part of the Significant Man Fellowship. We talk about how he has benefited from the group, changes his wife and kids have seen in him, the cost of being in such a group, and lots more. It’s one thing to hear about a group from the person running the group – it’s another thing entirely to hear from one of the members. Questions Answered: What is the Significant Man Fellowship? How have you benefitted from being in the group? Has your wife, and your kids, seen changes in you? Since there is a cost, how do you decide it if is worth it to be part of the group? Why should other guys join the Fellowship? The Significant Man Fellowship is an exclusive group for Christian men. Our goal is to support and encourage one another, without any judgment, to have the best in mind of the other members, to learn together, and to work on becoming the men that God created us to be. Years ago I felt the need to reply to each and every comment, but not anymore. There is no point in that. Send us a text The left is attacking Sound of Freedom and now the right is attacking the movie as well. So both sides have people saying to not go see it. On the left people are saying this is just a conspiracy theory and a non-issue, on the right people are saying this is just a Mormon issue. So what’s the deal? Is this a conspiracy? What should the normal person in the middle do? That’s what I tackle on the show today, so let’s get started. Send us a text Many men read the line in Ephesians about husbands giving up their lives for their wives, and that line resonates. Men are willing to jump in front of the moving car, are willing to die for their wives. But, at the same time, too often men are not wiling to live in unity with their wives. It’s a big topic that I’m addressing in today’s Five Minute Friday episode, so let’s get started. Send us a text Christian Brotherhood impacts every area of a man’s life. And too many men are trying to go through life as the lone wolf, figuring out things by themselves. But men were not created to walk through life alone. We need friends by our side, we need friends to hold us accountable, we need friends who will walk the walk with us. Having great friends, having a brotherhood you can count on helps you, it helps your sons and daughters, it helps your wife, it helps all around you as you are changed into the man God created you to be. In this episode, my guest answers lots of questions about friendship and Christian Brotherhood, so let’s get started. --- Travis Uptegrove has been married for 22 years to his wife, Kristina, and they have four boys, ages 19, 16, 12, and 8. Travis founded Element 26 Men’s Ministry in Chattanooga, TN in 2016 with his annual men’s retreat, and in 2021, he launched his first event in Florida. The goal of Element 26 is to build a community of men who are striving to have a stronger walk with God, and in the process becoming better husbands, fathers, and men for Christ. Send us a text In our modern culture it seems like biblical masculinity is an afterthought, or worse, something to be lined up against. But what is Biblical Masculinity, and how is it relevant in our current era? Today’s episode digs into these questions along with thoughts on issues like honor, a man leading in his home, and how values guide our work. My guest is Brian Phillips, founder of The Grove Fellowship and Grace Ops where he works as a strategic visionary leader within these organizations. Brian believes discipline, zeal and devotion are necessary to succeed in the work you are called to accomplish in life. He has reached thousands of men with the gospel and calls them to live an authentic life of conviction and character. Brian lives in Northern Illinois with his wife of 24 years, their four children, and one grandchild. He loves fitness, bonfires and spending time with friends and family. You can learn more at graceops.net Questions answered on this episode: What does it mean to help men discover and define biblical masculinity? How can a man be tender and tough at the same time? Guys, of course you can listen, but I’m speaking specifically to the ladies here. I’ve been working with men for quite a long time, and a little while ago I asked them to share some feedback, some things that they wished women knew, things that they wished their wives knew, that they wished ladies knew, in general, about men in their lives. It’s going to be very real, very honest. I’ve got lots of quotes, a lot of feedback to give you. Send us a text Today I’m going to talk about a trap that so many men find themselves falling into, and they don’t often realize it. So, what’s this trap? This trap is that of success. Send us a text Serious and important episode today. There seems to be new study after study now that shows mental health issues for kids are getting worse. Sadness, suicide, rates of depression, self-harm, and loneliness… all these stats seem to be moving in the wrong direction. And we don’t need the studies, we can see it with our own eyes when we look at the world our kids are growing up in. We see the news and the headlines, so we don’t need the studies – they just reinforce what we see all around us. Why is this? Why does this seem to be getting worse, year after year? Send us a text Judge Not, and who are you to judge anyway? That seems to be the current summary of what people think the Bible, and Jesus, had to say about the topic of judgment. But is that true? How is it that Christian judgment so often leads to charges of hypocrisy? Should Christians ever judge? And what is discernment, how does that fit into this topic? On today’s episode my guest, Nick Tallo shares his perspective on these giant issues of people living the Christian life, so let’s get started. Nick has been the Executive Pastor at 2Rivers Church for the last 7 years. Prior to that, he was the Associate Pastor at Creekside Place Church in Warrenton, Missouri. He and his wife have four kids from 15 to 4 years old. You can learn more about Nick and his church at 2riverschurch.com Questions Answered: What is Christian judgment? I’ve seen people get into heated debates over a person being baptized face first into the water or dipped back into the water. Really? Really? We’ve got to do better. Send us a text The Bible is the most translated, most read, and most well-known book in the history of mankind. But many people are intimidated by the Bible, and don’t know what the book is about or how it is structured, or how it can all be tied into one story. In this episode my guest shares his thoughts on the Bible, provides great insight into some of the key questions about the Bible, and how this incredible book applies to our lives. My guest today is Mike Teramano. Mike is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Clemson, South Carolina for school and has lived there ever since. He and his wife Terri have been married for 15 years with two children. Mike & Terri serve in their local church with a focus on discipleship - they are passionate about increasing their own and others' biblical IQ. They teach classes, connect new members with ministries in the church, host marriage workshops, and help run church operations. Mike is a Detective with a local police department having served over 15 years in law enforcement while Terri is a Nurse and Nurse Educator having practiced and taught for over 12 years. They enjoy sushi, they try to hike whenever life allows it, and will throw down on game night if challenged! Questions Answered: What is the Bible? How does someone get started with the Bible? What is the Hebrew Bible? How is the New Testament structured? How can all these different pieces of writing be one story? What are your thoughts on new perspectives when reading the same passage over and over? I have other people to tell me what the Bible means, so why should I read it myself? Is the Bible simply a life application tool? How are the Scriptures like a mirror? How does the Old Testament matter to a Christian? What are the ways that Christianity has influenced our culture? Why does it matter that we know who the books of the Bible were originally written to? What should pastors keep in mind when teaching the Bible? Some are mad at the amount of money spent, it’s a campaign that will spend over $100M dollars. Some are annoyed at how the commercials have been put together. Some challenge the messages of the ads. Some have different problems entirely. But others have praised this marketing campaign. So what’s the deal? Is this a horrible move, is it a waste of money, is it making fascism look benign, as Representative Ocasio-Cortez stated? Or is it great work? That’s the topic today, so let’s get started. Send us a text Taking verses out of context, in the Bible, is a big problem. People will read their own interpretation, they’ll look for a verse to say what they want it to say instead of reading it in the context of what it’s actually saying. Today we’re going to talk about Philippians 4:13 and how people take that one out of context, so let’s get started. Send us a text In our modern world, many men struggle with what may feel like a conflict between their careers and their faith walk. Men struggle with earning an income, sometimes even guilty about earning and income. So are men supposed to go to work and earn an income for our families, or leave the workplace and go be missionaries? The way we think about these issues, about money, about career, about the workplace, and about our calling is critical. My guest today, Brian Schulenburg, has been a pastor for several decades, and he is also a business owner in the world or real estate. He brings great experience to this conversation, so let’s get started. Brian has served as Wooddale’s discipleship pastor since 2018. This is his second stint at Wooddale, having served as our senior high pastor from 2001-2008. He spent a decade as the senior pastor of Woodbury Community Church. Brian has a heart for seeing people become followers of Jesus. From the time God captured his heart as a child, Brian has been introducing people to Jesus. He loves walking alongside others as they discover who God made them to be. He has served as a police chaplain with the Eden Prairie Police Department. In addition to his work as a pastor, Brian is a 3rd generation realtor, who has helped people buying and selling real estate all over the Twin Cities. Married for over 30 years to his wife Cyndi, the Schulenburgs are parents to four adult children. They are also grandparents. Brian is a graduate of Liberty University and Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. Brian loves being on the water of a Minnesota lake, fishing, playing disc golf, geocaching, board games, superhero movies, comic books, baseball and basketball. You’ll also find him stocking books in the little free library in front of his home. Questions Answered: What does “Business as Mission” mean? Is there a separation between our professional calling and our Christian calling? How do I determine when to go deeper in a conversation? For a man in a rough job, how does he not absorb that and live as light in the darkness? Is there a conflict between earning money and serving him? Guilt of being wealthy? What are your thoughts on the story of the rich young ruler in the Bible? How do I share the gospel if I don’t have a theology degree? What if I say the wrong thing when sharing the gospel? Do I have a responsibility to share the gospel in my life, or is that just for pastors? Should men quit their businesses and go become missionaries? What if a man knows his calling is not his job, what does he do? Why is it important to be authentically me in my workplace? Important Links: THE FELLOWSHIP BROTHERHOOD An exclusive community of li

I hope you’ll be able to hear through that and hear this with the love that is intended. Being a father is one of the most important jobs we will ever have, and sometimes we need to step back and analyze our own performance, what we need to get better at, what we need to keep doing, and what we need to stop doing. One of those things to analyze is the amount of pressure we are putting on our kids, and that’s the topic today so let’s get started. Send us a text When you think of Christmas, odds are that you’ll have the typical thoughts and images come to mind. Christmas trees, gifts, wrapping paper, classic movies (including Die Hard), lights, ornaments, decorations, and all of that. And when you think of Christmas from a Christian viewpoint, odds are that you’ll have the typical thoughts and images there as well. Jesus, God, the manger, angels, Mary and Joseph, Christmas carols, and all of that. What you probably don’t think of, when it comes to Christmas, at least not at first, is violence, chaos, and war. But that is ultimately an important aspect of what the Christmas story is. Christmas is a part of a long and violent war story. It is THE war story to end all war stories. It's not the normal Christmas message, so let's get started.

Send us a text Around the world there are millions, perhaps billions, of people who celebrate Christmas without actually knowing who Jesus was or why he was born. His birth changed the course of human history, even for those who do not believe in him. His birth changed the future of mankind, even for those who have never heard his name. During the Christmas season many will have a simple acknowledgment of Jesus, others may even say the phrase “Jesus is the reason for the season”, but they do so without really knowing why he came to Earth. With our hindsight, we know that Jesus was born, lived 33 years, and died in the Spring during Passover. But why was he born in the first place? Why was it his destiny to enter this sin-filled, sick, and hurting world at all? In today's episode, I tackle this giant question, so let's get started. Send us a text What are the things that dominate your thoughts? Do you get anxious? Distracted? Worry? In today’s episode I tackle these questions, so let’s get started. Too often I find myself distracted from things, not fully paying attention. It’s so easy to have a second screen open, to glance at another device, to be half-listening to someone who is talking. Even when I’m in church, and taking notes during the sermon, too often I have to keep re-focusing my attention on the pastor. I get distracted easily, and it’s one reason I’m so serious about going offline every weekend. Part of what leads me to distraction is thinking about what I have to get done next, or what project is currently not finished, or what I’ve not even started yet. And when those thoughts start to add up, I move from just being distracted to starting to feel anxious. Anxious about the bank account. Anxious about doing my job. Anxious about leading this ministry and the future of where we are headed. Anxious about all the things I “have to do”. Maybe you feel this as well. When we are in that feeling of being anxious, it is nearly the opposite of the feeling we experience when we are content, when we’re at peace, and when we’re filled with gratitude. ---- Important Links: THE BASECAMP EXPERIENCE A Four day and three night life-changing experience and training for married Christian fathers in the glorious mountains of Colorado. Send us a text When it comes to Thanksgiving, there are some pretty standard themes that get talked about. And they’re all good themes, like Be thankful, or how to practice gratitude, or appreciate being blessed, and so on. Nothing wrong with those ideas, but I want to talk with you today from a different perspective. I want to talk with you about your attitude. There are very few things that have a bigger impact on the quality of your life and on your daily interaction with others than your own attitude. There’s not much that will change the way you view yourself, others, and the world than your attitude. And this applies to both your positive attitude and your negative attitude. With the news we get hit with every day it’s seeming easier and easier to end up critical of others and looking for the negative aspects or our daily encounters. So we need to be careful here. All right, so let’s dig in.

Send us a text I’ve been helping men and working with men for a long time now, from informally helping out guys way back in the 80s (as in the 1900s), through leading live men’s events with Significant Man Ministries today. It is my calling and my passion, and to see the changes in men, and the resulting changes in their marriages and families is humbling. And one of the things I have learned about Christian men is that we tend to fall for one of the big lies of the enemy. And that lie is that we think we have to do everything by ourselves. We think we are the only ones who could ever understand our problems, and we think we are the only one who has ever had our problems. We think we cannot count on anyone else. We think we have to figure out the solution by ourselves. And sometimes, if we’re being honest, we like to play this part. We like to be the lone wolf who just gets things done, without anyone else. We like to step back and say, look at what I accomplished. Look at me, I have it all figured out, I am the one who did all of this. And see, I didn’t need anyone else. But, here is the tough part. Eventually, the lone wolf dies. Send us a text In our culture, there is something dangerous, but we don’t often see it as such. It is something that can slowly, one small step at a time, take us down a path that leads us away from Jesus, even if it happens under the disguise of following him. And that something is the dangerous message of false teaching. False teachers are not new, men and women who wish to twist and use scriptures as they desire have been around for as long as there has been scripture to misuse. In second Peter 2, he starts with this, “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.” So this is not a new problem. But in our online world, in our soundbite world, where so many seek out messages that fit in a meme, in my opinion this problem is getting worse, not better. In today’s episode I’m going to dig into this idea of false teaching and why it’s so dangerous, so let’s get started. . . . Important Links: . Send us a text In today’s episode I’m going to discuss a critical shift that has to be made in the conversation about your purpose, as a Christian man. There is a new perspective that may be required here, and it is a foundational principle of how we, as Christian men, can view our purpose and calling. This new perspective is found in the comparison of and contrasting between a purpose that is of this world, and a purpose that is not of this world. There is a conflict between these two purposes, and it is within this conflict that many men find themselves trapped and feeling insignificant in their purpose. . . Send us a text Around the world and in religions from all over, many people are taught that if they just do enough good here on earth, they will experience paradise in the after life. They think that being good is enough to get into heaven, so to speak. But, this view is not what the Bible teaches, and it raises a whole lot of questions. To start with, how is a good person defined? Who gets to create that definition? Do you? Do I? What if we have different definitions of doing good? Is a good person someone who hasn’t committed any serious crimes throughout their life? Or maybe a good person is someone who has dedicated their lives to ministry or to working at a homeless shelter once a week? Or maybe it’s working there every day? And then, just how many good deeds is enough? Do I have do something good once a week, once a day, how much exactly will count up as good enough. If 51 percent of my actions are what I think are good, is that going to be enough? Can the other 49 percent be not so good? Send us a text Today’s episode might be a bit strong for some. There is a dangerous trend, especially here in American churches, with the messages some pastors are teaching, and we all need to be vigilant and aware of this. It’s not the most fun topic to discuss, and sometimes people get upset at calling things out like this, but second Peter warns of these dangers. So what is it that I’m talking about today? What is a problem with pastors? Let’s get into it. It is becoming all too common to find a big church led by a charismatic pastor who is a great speaker. He uses pauses well, he raises and lowers his voice on cue, he cries on demand… he puts on a really great show. It is emotional, it is strong, it is positive, it is encouraging. But, what is frequently missing is the actual Bible, the actual foundation of scripture seems to be an afterthought, if any thought, in that kind of environment. Send us a text In today’s world, at first glance, it seems like science and faith are opposites, that they have nothing to do with one another and that they are about as far apart as anything could be. But, is that true? Is it true that Christianity and science are opposites? Is it correct to think that they have nothing to do with one another? In today's podcast episode, I dig into these questions and share my thoughts on the relationship between faith and science. Send us a text We are living in a culture that is creating, and even – at times – happy about having, a fatherless society. You’ve heard the lines: Men are optional. A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle. Or that with medical advances, men won’t even be needed to create life. And on and on… But the reality is that despite the current push of society, despite men often being told they are an accessory and not really that important anymore, the stats are overwhelming. In today’s episode, I get into the fact that yes, Fathers Matter, and just how important it is to become the father God created you to be. Send us a text A while ago there was a story in the news of a runner, a man who was entered into a marathon and he ended up crossing the line in third place. But the story quickly changed when witnesses reported seeing the man get on a bus, during the race, and ride it to near the finish line. He then got off the bus and hid behind a tree, only to start running again after two other men had passed in front him. He didn’t want to be in first place, that would too obvious. And although he crossed the line in third place, it didn’t last long. His trick was found out, and he was stripped of his medal. This was a man who did not embrace the race. It’s tempting for us to want to jump ahead to the finish line, to skip the miles in between starting and completing the race, but those miles in between are critical. Those miles in between are where the learning happens, that’s where our growth takes place. And God knows it. In Hebrews 12:1 we read, “let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” As Christians, as men who have been around the sun a few times, this isn’t our first time around the track. Now some of us are farther along than others, and some of you are just getting started. But we are all in the race together. And as we’re running this race, we need to get rid of the weight that is slowing us down. Send us a text Why is it that so many men avoid church? Why are so many churches filled with women and men who have reluctantly been dragged along? What are the messages that are taught in church, and which ones are avoided? Does avoiding those messages have any impact on men attending church? Who is the Jesus that is discussed in many churches and is he different from the Jesus that is discussed in the Bible? Too many churches are just rooms filled with women, and in today's episode, I tackle these questions and give you something to think about as you head into your weekend. Send us a text Have courage men, have courage. Lines like that tend to create deep emotional responses in men. We love courage. We love the ideas that come into our minds when we think of courage. But, why is that? How could a few simple words end up meaning so much? Let’s start first with trying to understand what courage is to begin with. When you think about courage, what do you think of? What images or visions come to mind? Normally, men think of a soldier in battle, doing something heroic and dangerous. Men think of an act of bravery that could result in the loss of life or limb. Men think of David defeating Goliath. Men think of a man, out in the woods, fighting a wolf alone with his bare hands. Men think of great men doing great things. Doing. Taking action. But if I'm not hanging off a helicopter or running into a burning building, how can I be a courageous man? Listen to today's show for what might be a different take on this important question. Send us a text When we first look at Jeremiah 29:11 it seems so simple and straightforward. And, it seems so very encouraging, hopeful, and optimistic. It is one of those verses that lives on wall plaques, printed on shirts, and painted onto coffee mugs. But, is it possible this famous verse is taken out of context? As a reminder, here is Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” With this verse, all translations are very similar, so there is nothing to dig into in how this verse is translated. So, what’s the cliché, what’s the deal with this verse being taken out of context? Well, for that, as is usually the case, we need to expand our reading and knowing to the verses and chapters that are surrounding this verse. Send us a text It only takes a few minutes of being online and looking at posts that combine politics and Christianity to find people making the argument that Jesus was a socialist. And since I talk about politics online and while I certainly share my faith online, I took these conversations seriously, and wondered about the question, was Jesus a socialist? Did he practice socialism or encourage socialism for his followers? Back in June of 1992, it was reported in London’s Daily Telegraph that former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev had said, “Jesus was the first socialist…” so this statement and the question has been around for quite some time now. In today’s podcast, I share my thoughts on this question and share my answer. Let’s get started! Send us a text When I ask non-Christians to describe Christians in one word, near the top of the list is the word hypocrite. It only takes a short amount of time in this world to realize how rampant the perception is of Christians being hypocrites in their words and their actions. Send us a text This is a fun one today. Something that some men are aware of in their subconscious, but almost never think about, is the truly incredible and powerful impact their wives have on them. You see, with her by your side, with her in your life, everything is possible. With her in your life, you can (and will) go out and conquer the world, you will build and you will provide her and your family amazing things. With her in your life, you will walk over burning shards of glass and broken nails to protect her. But on the other hand however, without her by your side, without her in your corner, without her belief in you, feels like there is nothing worth doing. If she is not there, supporting, encouraging, and going through life with you, why bother? Now this might be a new idea, so let me expand on this some. Men do want to build, they want to create, they want to provide. But, who exactly are they building, creating, and providing for? As men, as husbands, If we’re being totally honest, we know that it isn't really for ourselves all that often. We’re doing all that for her, our families, and the future we’re going to enjoy together. Send us a text Is Memorial Day really about mattress sales, a day off work, and BBQ? Or, is there something more that we should remember? Make sure that you stop and think about what this day is truly about. Young men and women, for generations, were asked to be willing to give up their lives so that we can live free. And for generations, young men and women have answered that call. In the wars and military actions that have been fought over those generations, the sacrifices that too many of those men and those women have paid can never be fully comprehended by us and never can be repaid by us. We may intellectually understand, but we can never fully do so. We can never fully understand what they have sacrificed, because of their dedication and love for this nation, and because of their love for the freedoms we often take for granted daily. There is no option for us to understand and repay that sacrifice. A verse that comes to mind, when thinking of our soldiers and Memorial Day is John 15:12-14, “This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.” Important Links: THE FELLOWSHIP BROTHERHOOD An exclusive community of like-minded Christian men, who meet each week to learn, laugh, hold each other accountable, and walk through life together. Send us a text In today’s show, I’m going to share some thoughts about unity in marriage. It’s something that is generally agreed upon as a good idea but can be difficult to clearly articulate or put into action. And sometimes a mistaken idea of what this unity looks like can lead a couple down a dangerous path. A strong marriage, a healthy marriage, has unity at the center. And a strong marriage has both husband and wife continuing their separate identities and purposes. These two statements might seem like they are at odds with one another, however there is an important distinction that needs to be made... Send us a text First, I have to start this by noting that, as of today when this episode goes live, there has not yet been an official ruling related to Abortion or Roe versus Wade by the Supreme Court, only a leaked draft of the ruling. That leak draft seems to have been confirmed, but right now, there is no official decision. OK, so on my social media feed, I shared a simple sentiment, which was that All human life is precious, and all human life is sacred. From the youngest to the oldest. All human life is sacred. In this episode I expand on that post and share my thoughts on whether or not every human life is sacred. It’s not an easy topic to work through, but an important one to discuss. Send us a text Why does marriage matter these days? And what makes a marriage strong? When guys tell me why they are not getting married, they will often say, “it’s just a piece of paper.” Or they will tell me that it is just a formality. Or they will come up with something similar. But, marriage is so much more than that; it’s a sanctified relationship. To start with, we need to recognize that it is God who came up with the idea of marriage, and all that God has created is good. This means marriage is His idea and therefore it’s a good idea. That’s one of the starting points as we go through this idea. Marriage is not just a piece of paper, it’s not a formality, it’s an amazing gift God has given us. And what do we need to make this gift of marriage work? Is it enough to have two people who stand before God and in front of their friends and family and proclaim their love for each other? Is love really all you need? While our culture might say yes, history and experience will say no. Love is a great foundation, it’s a great cornerstone, but it isn’t enough, love is not all you need. If love isn’t all you need, then the obvious question is what do you need? What is needed to make a marriage strong? Thankfully, we have the answer to this question. It’s found in scripture. There are times we would rather just go through the latest and greatest how-to marriage book, but the truth is that in the scripture, in the gospel, in what Jesus taught we find what’s needed to make marriage strong. ... Send us a text We live in a culture that is becoming more and more hostile towards Christians and Christianity. We are living in a culture that seems to be more and more opposed to what Jesus taught. It only takes speaking out, sharing the love of Jesus, and sharing what he taught, to have that become crystal clear. I know far too many people who share with me, in private messages, that they want to speak up more, they want to share the good news more, but they are worried about losing their jobs, having people in their towns stop speaking with them, and about being cancelled online. The reality is that we are living in a culture that seems directly opposed to the truth of Jesus. In many instances, simply mentioning his name today will often bring out a negative, vile, nasty, and outright evil response. Through my Significant Man page on Facebook, I’ve received my share of those messages. The opposition is very real. But, the opposition is not new. Paul ran into this opposition plenty when he was out sharing the good news of Jesus. We read some about this in the book of Acts. In Chapter 17 there is a section about Paul teaching in Thessalonica, when troublemakers were gathered to form a mob and start a riot, looking to drag Paul (and Silas who was with him) out into the crowd. Later in Acts, Paul and Silas are preaching in Berea, where they are met with opposition again, and it was so serious they had to flee for their own safety. Then in Acts is yet another example, this time in Ephesus, of the crowd being filled with anger against Paul. The opposition is not new. A hostile culture is not new. From the earliest moments that Jesus began teaching, there was opposition. From the earliest moments that his disciples began teaching, there was opposition. But knowing that there is this hostility, knowing that there is this opposition is just one part of the equation. The Bible teaches us that we are going to have trouble, that we are going to have challenges, struggles, and opposition, so we know this. And even though it can feel like it, we know it’s not new. So what do we do with this knowledge? It’s one thing to know that anger is coming, to know that conflict is coming, but something has to happen with that insight. So what is that “something”? Send us a text Doubt is an interesting conversation around Christians. Some openly embrace and encourage times of doubt and questioning. While others openly are against and discourage such times. For many Christians, the truth is that we have doubt from time to time, whether we want to admit it or not. The reality is that we have questions. We wonder. We think about alternatives. And sometimes we aren’t sure of things in our Christianity. Thankfully we have a faith that allows for those questions, and we can see, going back to the original disciples, that asking questions is part of the faith itself. The men who walked side-by-side with Jesus had questions, they had things that they did not understand, they had times when they doubted. Send us a text Do Not Steal What Exactly? Most of us know the Commandment, “Do Not Steal”, even non-Christians have heard it, but many may not have taken into consideration the full meaning of this incredibly powerful commandment. It’s easy to look at the others and make a quick comparison. After all, I know for sure that I have never murdered someone, so I get to have the positive ego check of telling myself I’m doing well. But, what exactly does do not steal encompass? Well, it encompasses an awful lot more than many might realize at first glance. And there is a reason it covers so much more than we might think. When we look at this verse, it is one of the short ones, simple Do not steal, or you shall not steal. Notice what’s missing. In Exodus, where the ten commandments are written, there isn’t a list of what you cannot steal. There isn’t even a hint of what you are forbidden from stealing. And that means only one thing. You cannot steal anything that belongs to, or is part of, another person. Our first thought is always to jump to material goods, to not stealing the stuff, the possessions, of someone else. And yes, that is absolutely covered here. You are not to steal the property of someone else. From their land, to their livestock, to their house, to anything in the house, and anything else they own; if it is their private property, you cannot steal it. That seems pretty cut and dry. However, the commandment does not stop with material goods, and that’s where we need to really think about this one. Like I said earlier, it’s easy to say I’ve never broken the commandment about murder, but maybe I have to understand this commandment on a deeper level before I confidently say I’ve never broken this one as well. Do not steal is, in fact, so all-encompassing that some commentators say it could be a summary of all the commandments on the second tablet. So what exactly are we not allowed to steal? Send us a text One conversation I have often with men is that of a man and his purpose, his calling, his very reason for living. As we begin working through this giant topic, I want to start with some questions - when does your individual purpose even begin? Is it when you’re an adult? When you get married? When you become a father? Your first job? If you’ve been created for a purpose, when does that happen? In today's episode, I tackle the big topic of Finding Your Purpose. Send us a text Jesus. His name alone raises intense emotions. His name alone causes people to react. There is no other name like his, in all of human history. And in our modern history, people love to assign Jesus to a current political party or to a current political position. In posts, articles, and videos I’ll see people sharing how they are positive that if Jesus was walking beside them today, that He would vote for person X or party Y. Of course, it just happens to be a coincidence that people also put themselves in the group that would vote for person X or party Y. It never seems to be the case that people think Jesus would vote differently from themselves. In my work, I’m open with what I believe. I don’t hide it. I am a Christian man. I am an imperfect man who makes mistakes all the time. I believe that I need forgiveness for my sins. I believe in Jesus Christ, the son of God, who died, was buried, and rose from the grave three days later. I believe in Him. He is my lord and my savior. I believe in the Bible. I believe in the clear right and wrong that Jesus taught. And today, many of those things are considered inappropriate to state. Especially when it comes to the clear right and wrong that Jesus taught. Today we live in a world of the idea where there is no singular truth, and that everyone can have their own truth. We live in a world where the idea of clear right and wrong is frowned upon. We live in a world where you either agree with the popular view, or you are to be quiet. We live in a world where you either go along with the politically correct view, or you keep things to yourselves. Disagreement is not allowed. And if you disagree with the wrong thing, you can be ostracized, or even lose your friends, your family, and your career. One thing Jesus never was, was quiet about issues. Jesus was frustrated with the Zealots, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and others – and I think he would be frustrated today as well. Jesus did not worry about offending people. Jesus did not worry about disagreeing with people. Even those in power, those who were popular, or those who had influence over others, at the time. He spoke the truth. The absolute, black and white truth. Send us a text We'll call him Joe, but he could just as easily be you or me. Joe was a nice guy and he was a good guy. He was always willing to help others, there was always a smile on his face... he was the guy who would say yes when you needed someone to come and help you move into a new house. Joe would give you a ride when your car was in the shop. He would agree to go to the movie you wanted to see, even if he didn't want to see that one. Joe was a nice guy. And he never saw it coming. Send us a text The Prosperity Gospel sounds so good, it sounds so appealing, and that’s one reason it pulls in so many people (it pulled me in for a few years myself – I was all-in on this). But the prosperity gospel is not just false, it’s dangerous. And in this Five Minute Friday I’m going to break down why I hold that position. Now, it is not that the word prosper, or the idea of prosperity, or the idea of blessing, it’s not that they’re not in the Bible, clearly those words and ideas are. Rather, it is in how people in Western culture (and in some mega churches where this is preached) have decided to interpret those words and verses. And the way we interpret this makes a world of difference... Send us a text The questions that haunt many men may sound simple, but to those of us who are seeking more out of life we know these are anything but simple questions. Are we really men? Are we doing what men are supposed to be doing? Are we living the lives God created us to live? And, how do we measure ourselves as men? Now often the answers come down to our stuff; so we measure ourselves by the cars we drive, the homes we live in, the vacations we take, and the toys we buy for our family, our friends, and ourselves. This is an easy way for us to measure ourselves, because each of these things, all this stuff, is very easy to see and identify. We can visually see the difference between a Ferrari and a Ford. We can visually see the difference between a mansion and a shack. All men can see these differences, and this makes for an easy and quick way to measure success. However, measuring ourselves by our things leaves a hollow feeling inside, and never really answers those haunting questions we have deep down inside. Measuring by things simply confuses the situation. Which then raises an obvious follow–up question; since that is so hollow, and since the stuff never really works and leaves men empty inside, how should a man measure himself? How do you measure your success as a man? Send us a text How and why should you pass through the pearly gates? Death is inevitable. Despite some protest against this reality, we all know it to be true. One day, we are all going to die. We are all going to facing that moment of truth. We are all going to stand at the pearly gates and we’re going to have to give an account of our lives. We are going to explain what we did, why we did what we did, and it might expose some stuff we had hoped would have stayed hidden. It might reveal some times when we treated someone poorly, or when we spoke - not words of inspiration - but words of destruction to someone else. It might reveal all sorts of things that we wish we never said or did. And of course we look forward to all the positive moments being revealed as well. The times we helped those less fortunate, when we gave of our money, our time, and our possessions to others who we knew needed those resources more than we did. Or the times when we stood up to an injustice that we saw taking place, even when standing up cost us friends. Or the times when we did the right thing, even though no one was looking, no one saw what we were doing, and we didn’t post about it on social media. All of that will be taking place there at those pearly gates. But then, there might be an interesting question posed towards you. You might get asked about the question of how and why it is that you should pass through the gates at all. And this could be a tricky question for you, though it’s not meant as a trick question. When you think about that question, why you should pass through, how it is that you should be one to pass through, where do your thoughts go at first? Send us a text There is a common thread that runs throughout the Bible. That common thread is a message that we need, more than ever, these days. That common thread is one that seems very counter-cultural in the world we live in right now. And what is that common thread that we need? It is God telling us to Fear Not. As humans, we’re fragile. We get hurt. We get sick. We die. We get cuts, and scrapes, and bruises. We’re not a very physically strong species, especially when compared to others roaming and swimming around on this pale blue dot we call home. Beyond that, we have politicians and leaders who are telling us to be afraid and who benefit personally when we are afraid. They tell us to fear the changing world, to fear funding cuts, to fear funding additions, to fear temperatures getting colder, to fear temperatures getting warmer, to fear the other political party, to fear more and more – and of course they themselves are the ones who have the solutions, if only we would vote for them and give them our hard earned money. And beyond the political and physical, we have insecurities. We have doubts. We have questions. We get worried, and concerned, and upset, and depressed, and anxious. We wonder what other people think about us. Our minds can often be a battlefield of these thoughts. It is to this physical fragility, to this mental and emotional fragility that the common thread is the antidote. Our LORD tells us, over and over, and over again, to Fear Not. God tells us to not be afraid, angels appear and tell people to not be afraid, Jesus tells men and women to not be afraid. Why is this so common? Why does the message of not being afraid run through the pages of the Bible? And how does this apply to our lives today? Is there a point beyond just telling people to fear not? Send us a text Guys, this week is going to be different. The five-minute Friday segment is always just me, sharing my thoughts on various issues. And today I’m going to talk about something that might be controversial, though it’s not my intention to do so. Rather it’s that the subject itself can be these days. This will be my first episode that directly speaks about something COVID related. I’ve had guests on that have touched on the topic, and I may have mentioned it a time or two, but it has never been the focus of an entire episode. Well, today that changes. Today I’m talking about an aspect of this pandemic that has not gotten enough coverage and needs to be discussed more. And that is how the response to COVID has exposed the authoritarian nature of far too many people. First, yes I think COVID is a very real illness. Individuals and families all over the globe have been dealing with the impact that COVID, the disease has had, even sadly losing many loved ones. COVID is quite real. In our strange social media world, I wanted to make that point right up front. And COVID has also shown that governments and individuals are far too willing to bend to the authoritarian and totalitarian natures, which I honestly did not think were so prevalent here in the United States. I admit that I thought, and expected, the opposite, the desire for freedom, to be true. Send us a text Gentlemen, you need to love your wife well. As men, we hear that. We nod. We agree. Yes, that’s what we want to do. We want to be the kind of men who love our wives well. But how do we do that? It seems that it’s not very simple. With divorces in the news and on our newsfeeds every day, with the family structure being broken apart in the headlines, with so much going on, it seems like far too many men are struggling with the knowing how to love their wives well. Sometimes we fall into the trap of looking for the latest and greatest strategies. We look for new courses, videos, and podcasts that will finally give us the tips and guidance needed. We ache for the book that will just tell us what to do- and we’ll follow it. We want the most current plans to implement so that we can be a great husband, so that we can be the man who loves his wife well. We just want to know how. These myths can end up hurting your marriage, because they lead down the wrong path with bad, even if well-intentioned, advice and then you’re responding to that bad advice. Send us a text While it didn’t just happen yesterday, I recently learned of mega-pastor, Carl Lentz of Hillsong in New York, getting fired because he had an affair. And it seems this was not a one-night kind of thing, rather than he had some history here. Of course, following that, I read the typical comments about mega-churches, mega-pastors, famous people, money, greed, sin, sex, and all the standard stuff that follows one of these high-profile incidents. It seems that people enjoy piling on when there is a public incident like this, and people enjoy an opportunity to slam the church, any church, and to slam pastors (especially high-profile pastors). It seems that people enjoy seeing them fall. It seems that people enjoy pointing out the perceived hypocrisy that they see in others, and again especially in high-profile pastors. Maybe there is a different way we could be thinking about these situations and how we respond... Send us a text Well, we’ve made it to the end of 2021, and what a year it’s been. More mandates. More regulations. More government involvement in our lives. Masks. Quarantines. Travel restrictions. It’s been a crazy year, after the crazy year that was 2020. As we look ahead into the new year, there are the common things we talk about. We talk about setting goals, building good habits, and other thoughts about how we can check things off our vision boards as we start a new year. But, instead of that, what if we considered a different question. What if we decided to make 2022, not just about our own goals and the things we’re after, but instead we framed it on what God wants from us? Send us a text Starting out in marriage can be a challenge. There are so many new things to navigate and to learn about one another. Too often we think that we can just figure out marriage on our own, solving each new challenge when it happens. But wouldn’t it be better to do some planning, some preparing, and some learning, in order to have some practical knowledge in our marriages? Our guest today wrote a book that provides just that. Mike Povenz has a passion for helping men discover the best version of themselves and for guiding them to be better husbands and fathers. He is the founder of Modern Chivalry Men an organization inspiring men to positive change and community involvement, and he is the host of the Iron and Cotton podcast. Mike has served for years as a men’s group leader and is the recipient of the Life Changer Award. He lives in North Georgia with his beloved wife of 20 years, and they’re the proud parents of three children, along with 3 dogs, 2 guinea pigs, 4 chickens, and 1 psychotic fish. Mike loves the outdoors, fishing, boating, skiing, cooking on cast iron, and time with family and friends. Questions Answered: What is your story of being anti-faith to pursuing God? What has Romans 12:2 meant to you? Share the story of what led you to write your book? How does the regular guy learn about marriage? Can you expand on the idea of how much time guys spend on planning their marriage? How should men consider the idea of relationships with other couples? What is healthy arguing in a marriage? Send us a text One of the more complex issues in our culture is that of guns, violence, the second amendment, and how all of that is relevant to a Christian living in America. Stories of guns being used to shoot people cross our news feeds far too often. Should a Christian own a gun? Should a pastor own a gun? And what about Jesus being non-violent, how does that relate to owning a weapon? Our guest today tackles these difficult questions and more. Dan Skinner is a pastor, entrepreneur, and a strongman competitor. He has been ministering since 2006, and officially became a pastor in 2010 after graduating from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Dan's passion for guns became a career in 2012 when he became the sales manager for a defense company. And he now owns his own gun store, Eagle Creek Tactical, in Newton Falls, OH. Dan has lots of love and support from his wife, children, and their Labrador retrievers. Questions Answered: What is the definition of the Second Amendment? What limits did the founders place on weapons, for example could a citizen own a cannon? Could a citizen own a battleship? How did you decide to open a gun store? What is the best way to introduce firearms to children and families? Explain your thoughts of people moving their identity from Christians to Nationalism? How do you use a gun shop as part of your ministry? What do you think of the phrase “gun culture in America”? Should a Christian own a gun if Jesus talked about being non-violent? What is your interpretation of turning the other cheek? What challenges have you heard as a Christian who owns a gun shop? How is gun ownership tied into the suicide rate? Can you share your thoughts on mental health related to gun violence? Is a Christian man allowed to fire a weapon at an attacker? What are your thoughts on how sin is impacting pop culture? Send us a text Today’s show is going to be different for you. It’s going to be a shorter show, as it is just me going solo here for the week of Thanksgiving in the United States. I’m going to share some thoughts today about your attitude. There are very few things that have a bigger impact on the quality of your life and on your daily interaction with others than your own attitude. There’s not much that will change the way you view yourself, others, and the world than your attitude. And developing a positive attitude in a negative world is a critical skill to develop, so let’s get started. Send us a text For some people, their transformations as Christians happens slowly, over years and decades. For others, there is a specific moment in time when that transformation took place. Our guest today has such a story. He went from running in a direction away from Jesus to running with Jesus and his life has never been the same. With such a change, who did you used to be? How did you and your wife make the decision to live in a bus? What was it like for you going through the low points of life? Can a man be too far gone to be redeemed by God? How did you find new people to walk through life with now? How has your wife responded to the changes in your life? Send us a text Today’s show is going to be a bit different from some other episodes. I’m sitting down with a friend of mine to talk about faith, Christianity, modern day heresies, and all sorts of topics. It’s the kind of conversation that I hope more of us have with our friends, and I hope you enjoy listening in on this discussion. John Williams is a servant of God who strives daily to pick up his cross and follow Christ; contently serving in an upside-down kingdom. The greatest honor he has is the opportunity to study scripture with his wife, disciple his two sons, and serve his community in the name of Christ. As a former pastor's kid John has had a front row view of different spins on religious doctrine. Having had many faith crises in his time he was confronted with the dreaded questions, "what do I believe... and why?" Starting over from scratch, he began at the first place - the only place - that matters: the text. Since then, he has devoted his time to studying scripture and discipleship, while serving the community. Questions Answered: What is a heresy? Are we experiencing anything truly new in our society these days? What is original sin and how does it lead to heresy today? If I am basically good, what is the impact of the death of Christ? How can self-help potentially lead to heresy? What do you think about churches who skip the challenging parts of the Bible? Jesus talks about both judgment and love; how do we balance those two? Is the Bible just a book written by a bunch of men and not divinely inspired? How do we discern false teachers and false teaching? What are your thoughts of the prosperity gospel? How does a man start reading and studying the Bible? What about Free Will versus Predestination? What happens when a church becomes overly political? What is panentheism and how does it impact people today? What happens when a man daily spends time in scripture? They now have more connection, passion, and fun than they thought possible! As the Co-authors of The Miracle Morning for Couples, they’re on a mission to share their journey and build a community with other parents who are ready to recommit and create the marriage they desire. Send us a text Is there a conflict between being a Christian and being successful? Is it cheating on God to be successful? What is the role of wealth in the life of the Christian man? When talking about success and money it is often a complex topic and sometimes an uncomfortable topic. However, it is something we need to talk about and discuss. Our guest today knows these topics well and has great insights to share with us. Send us a text Coming home to a place where you feel safe and secure is something every father longs for. But all too often men are looking for home in the wrong places. When we flip that around and understand what home truly is, and where we need to be looking for home, we can find it in the right places instead. Our guest today went from being bullied as a child, being a chameleon to fit in, and losing himself to becoming a man who has impacted families in a powerful way through his work and he’s here to share great insights with us. Ben Killoy Is a Marine Veteran, speaker, and coach with a focus on helping dads rebuild confidence in who they are. He launched his first podcast Military Veteran Dad in 2019 and his second podcast The Business of Fatherhood in 2021. Ben now helps other dads rebuild their inner confidence and get them excited to walk through the door of their homes. Questions Answered: How do you define home? How do you help someone work through discovering out who they truly are? What does it mean to build our home on a solid foundation? If I don’t feel I am worthy of love, how do I work through that? Is it possible to unconditionally love other people if I don’t unconditionally love myself first? Where do men mistakenly look for home? What’s the difference between prior generations of men and our generation? What happens to a man when he has had adversity removed? As fathers, are we raising kids or are we raising future adults? Send us a text Politics today plays a major part in nearly every aspect of our world. As Christian men, we’re called to navigate this world with wisdom and with our eyes on the Kingdom of God. But does that mean that we’re to ignore world politics, or be involved in politics? What does God have to say about government? How are we to live under the authority of a worldly ruler, even if that ruler is evil? Our guest today has amazing insights into these questions, and lots more in this important discussion Mitch London’s journey is a roller coaster ride familiar to many. A smooth start, twists and turns, big drops, places where it feels out of control, times when the speed really picks up, and times when it seems like everything has almost stopped. But like most great rides, he would do it all over again. In Jan of 2019 Mitch received a vision from God to start a Men's Ministry called Just Add Wilderness . God was showing Mitch how men today have lost their Identity in Christ, which has resulted in stagnation, depression, and frustration. Mitch has been guiding men to a deeper understanding of their identity of Christ Jesus and watching them break free from the bondages of life. Helping Men became a mandate, not a market. As a pastor, Mitch really understood the vital need for relationships and connections within the body of Christ. The life on life and heart to heart discipleship that's needed was his passion. Today Mitch is the founder of Spirit Led Coaching where he helps Ministry and Business Leaders partner with the Holy Spirit and learn how to steward the gifts that God has already placed within them. Questions Answered: What does “God’s Government” mean? How does ‘they kingdom come” practically relate to the idea of God’s Government? What are some of the mandates Jesus gave to us? How are Christians to follow the mandate to take ground for the King? Should a Christian man be concerned with Earthly politics? What are the next steps for a man leading his family through these times? Can you explain what authority a man has been given? Is there a conflict between using my authority and choosing to give my burden to Jesus? How are people to act when subjected to an evil ruler? What does it mean to give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s? Where should a man start on the challenge of politics and God’s government? Send us a text In the United States there is a big gender divide in church attendance. Women are over 60% and men are under 40% of those attending church. For men, bluntly this is not a great decision. Men need to be challenged by church, and the power of church in a man’s life is unmistakable. Our guest today speaks to how church changes a man, his family, and our entire society. Jarrett Samuels is a husband, father of three, pastor, mentor and creator of the Pursuit of Manliness community and podcast. His passion is to equip and challenge men to raise the standard of what it means to be a man of God. Questions Answered: What is Biblical Manliness? Why do we need more men who are seeking to live a life of Biblical Manliness? What do you say to a man who is struggling an earthly father and God as father? When did you have a wake-up call during your life? How is our growth a lifetime pursuit? Why do you think there is a gender gap in church attendance, and how do we fix it? What are some of the consequences of men not attending church? What happens when people put a pastor up on a pedestal? Do men and women have the same needs from church? How does a man change when he goes to church every week? How do we help a man move from checking the box of attending church to living his life as a conduit of the gospel? What are some of the ways our society changes when more men go to church weekly? If I gather with a couple guys on my own, is that church? What does it mean that the church is the bride of Christ? Send us a text One of the most important skills you can teach yourself, and practice, is to see life from God’s perspective. When you do that, you can see and dwell on the amazing things all around us, every day. Our guest today explains this important idea, along with digging into some deep topics like forgiving yourself and working through negative self-talk. John Stange is the lead pastor of Core Creek Community Church in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, as well as an adjunct professor at Cairn University, where he teaches courses on counseling, theology, and church planting. John is a certified speaker, trainer, and coach with the John Maxwell Team and is also the director of the National Mission Board, a ministry focused on church planting and church health. He hosts three podcasts, The Chapter-a-Day Audio Bible , Daily Devotions with Pastor John , and Dwell on These Things , which have been collectively downloaded more than five million times. Questions Answered: What does it mean to talk to yourself like God talks to you? What happens to my heart when I talk negatively to myself? How do I change when I focus on the positive instead? If someone says they don’t hear God, what do you recommend? On a practical level, what does it look like to live a life based on truth? How does a dad influence his children about the idea of what we’re feeding into our minds? What does it mean that conditional love isn’t love at all? How can a man work through forgiving himself? Send us a text Prison can be a hard place, filled with people who have committed some of the worst crimes. As we’ll learn today, prison can also be a place of redemption, where people find God. It’s not an easy conversation to have, and our guest today knows that better than any. He went from being in prison and thinking that he would be there until he died to a free man who now preaches from the pulpit. Howie Close has spent the last eleven years as a pastor at Woodmen Valley Chapel, overseeing the church’s statewide prison ministry. For over twenty years prior to that, he was incarcerated in the same prisons where he now carries the keys. And now he has the privilege of ministering there with his teams. He lives in Colorado with his wife and their daughter. Please note – there are a few moments of background noise and poor connection in this recording. Questions Answered: What’s your story of growing up to finding yourself in prison? How did you find a Bible and learn about God while in an isolation cell? What was it like being so young and being in the toughest and scariest prison in the state? When did you decide to take your fighting spirit and bend it towards the kingdom of God? How did you get out of prison and transition to teaching from the pulpit? How does it feel to freely walk in and out of a building you thought you would be in until you died? What is it like having best friends who have committed some of the worst crimes, but who now follow Jesus? When talking about redemption of someone who has committed such crimes, what about the victims and the families of victims? Can you share another story of a man whose life has been changed through prison ministry? How can we adjust our stereotypes of prisoners? Send us a text One of the most important issues of our time is the mental health of our kids. The statistics are not encouraging right now, as rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide continue to rise. This is not something that can be ignored or that we can just hope will change on its own. And this is something that we, all of us, need to talk about and be aware of. Our guest today has years of experience in working with kids, working with teens, and creating positive changes in their lives. John Williams wasn’t raised under the best circumstances; he never met his biological father and from a young age he often had to take care of himself. Despite that, he has become an unshakable visionary who sees the world as it could be. He teaches students that they are more than their circumstances, and that they have what it takes to achieve their dreams. He does this by sharing his story and equipping them with the tools to face whatever life may throw at them. This is why he created Life That Counts, a nonprofit with the mission of helping students make better decisions for more healthy outcomes. Questions Answered: What is mental health? What is your story from a child to where you are now? How do we work through the challenge of such an increase in teen suicide? In what ways has the COVID response impacted our kids? How is cyber bullying impacting teens today? Who are the kids that you look to as leaders in the work that you do? How can we help our kids to make better decisions? Send us a text Recovery from everything is possible with God. Our guest today has an amazing story. Sexual abuse at a young age, living on his own by sixteen, alcohol addiction, drug addiction, war in the middle east, PTSD, arrested and in jail, a construction accident that cost him his eye, an addiction to painkillers, and now a full heart serving and loving other people. Aaron (Patch) Dean has been in recovery since 2010 and is called to the ministry of recovery through his church and through a program called Celebrate Recovery. And within Celebrate Recovery, he is part of a motorcycle group called Broken Chains. Patch is married, and is a father of four. Send us a text Nobody succeeds to their full potential on their own. Every one of us needs a group of people around us who shares our core values, and who wants to see us rise to the top. Send us a text Our best dreams are the ones that can only be pursued with God, they are too big for us to reach on our own. God wants a union with you, and God wants you to follow Him instead of pursuing earthly success. But, what does that mean? How do we do that? How do we hear from God and discover the first steps in pursuing our dreams with Him? In our show today, those questions and more are answered by my guest, Allen Arnold. Allen Arnold is an author, speaker, and Executive Producer of Content for Wild at Heart—the ministry founded by New York Times bestselling author John Eldredge. His passion is awakening people’s hearts to actively pursue their dreams and creativity with God. As a former Fiction Publisher, he oversaw the launch of more than 500 novels—and has since mentored and presented to thousands of creatives. Now, through the power of story, he helps people live a better story. He is the author of three acclaimed books, and he loves blue oceans, black coffee, hot salsa, and big ideas. Questions Answered: How did God work through you with the story of healing your voice? What does it mean for us to know our story? Can you explain the difference between following Jesus versus living with Him? What’s a practical example of living with God compared to living for God? What are some ways that we can hear the voice of God? Do you want God to be a genie or have a relationship with Him? How do I know if I have dreams that are too small? What does it mean to have dreams so big they can only be pursued with God? If my dream is so big that it is overwhelming, what are my first steps? Isn’t it supposed to be easier when I pursue my dreams with God? How does a man decide between following God and pursuing worldly success? If I am hungering for that bigger story, how do I begin? Send us a text The gospel is a mystery to many. Some men make it overly complex, but it doesn’t need to be. The gospel message can be quite simple. Other men find no daily application from the gospel, but that’s missing the point in a big way. In our show today, you’ll hear a great discussion about the gospel, walking in the simplicity of the gospel, and how the gospel message changes our daily walk as Christian men. My guest for this episode is Joe Bailey. Joe is a follower of Jesus, he is married and the father of five kids. He has a BA in Theology from Life Seminary and is the leader of the Paladin Project. He also is a working musician and a two-time IBO World Champion in Recurve and Longbow. He has tons of wisdom and I’m grateful to be sharing this conversation with you. Questions Answered: What is, and what isn’t, the gospel? How should the gospel change how we live our lives? How does a regular guy, with no theology degree, share the gospel? What does it mean that our power is in our story? Can I gain or lose God’s love based on my own performance? What does it mean that the American church isn’t yet spiritually well developed? Is there a neutral ground in a spiritual battle? Where has the gospel message been devalued for men? What is one small step for a man in a dark place to start walking out of that darkness? Do men today know how to suffer well? What’s the difference between a cultural belief and a saving belief? When we forget this, we can quickly get off track, and we can fall into common traps – like becoming workaholics. But, when we remember to put God first, and once we know who we truly are, we can experience enormous growth in our lives, in our marriages, and in our parenting. Jeff Forrester is the author of Unleashed Potential: Simple Steps to be the Best Version of Yourself , and he currently lives in Florida with his wife Tammy of 15 years, along with their son and daughter. He is a devoted Christian who is focused on helping his family, friends, and others get the most out of their lives. He has been on a path for the last 3 years to building a real relationship with Christ through reading his Bible and surrounding himself with other Christian men. Questions Answered: How does it help a man for him to have a personal mission statement? In what ways does a mission statement practically change a man’s life? What is the meaning of Galatians 2:20 for you? How does putting God first change your life? What is your story of having to step in and lead your family at a young age after your father passed away? Send us a text Men are called to adventure, especially in today’s world of screens and non-stop technology. But what exactly is adventure? How do we find adventure in normal everyday life? How do we involve God in our adventures? Dan Zehner is the founder of the Anthem of the Adventurer and answers these questions and much more in this conversation. From his powerful trip to the beaches of Normandy to adventure in his home state, Dan shares his stories and the importance of adventure in the lives of men. When Dan isn't diving in the dark with Navy SEALs, rucking through the cold with a team carrying logs, or building something in his shop, he's serving his wife and three kids in the ways that only he can in Lafayette, Indiana. Every day he's showing others how to have an epic, adventurous life and love the journey with some powerful tools! Dan started the Anthem of the Adventurer out of a deep-seated need for adventure in his life, and to share that journey with other men. Before joining SEAL Team Leaders, where he serves as the head coach in the leadership and teams class, Dan has worked with research centers at Purdue University for both the National Science Foundation and NASA, helping make our society more resilient to all the natural hazards nature throws at us on Earth as well as on the moon and Mars. How does a man who is risk-adverse embrace adventure in his life? Why do I need God’s involvement in my adventures? How does God help me when I’m on an adventure? Send us a text What is Biblical masculinity? What is a man? Why does the world need men who are following the example Jesus set of Biblical masculinity? These are core questions and core concepts for Christian men to think about and implement in their lives, yet not often clearly talked about. My guest today, Jeff Hammer, author of the book Man Up: The Quest for Masculinity , has direct answers to these important questions and lots more in this great conversation. Jeff Hemmer is the husband of (in his opinion) the most wonderful woman in the world, the father to the five most delightful children he’s ever met, the pastor of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairview Heights, Illinois, a wannabe farmer, maker of some things, fixer of some other things, grower of beards, and general curmudgeon. His big truck is probably a sign of his insecurity. Questions Answered: What is a man? What does it mean to be masculine for the good of others? How does a boy become a man? Who are examples, from the Bible, of men who displayed characteristics of Biblical masculinity? How are we infected with what we have inherited as sons of Adam? What’s different (and what’s the same) about Jesus as a man, when compared to all other men? Why does the world need more men who are trying to follow the example Jesus set of Biblical masculinity? How does sacrifice relate to a masculine man? What force, in and out of the church, is preventing men from following Biblical masculinity? What does the Bible mean when it says that wives are to submit to their husbands? Why are there separate directives to love and to respect given separately to men and women? Is Biblical masculinity an impossible standard for men? Together, we’ve got to keep learning, because even though we live in this world, we're not of this world. We have to learn how to navigate the challenges that the world presents. We have to learn about the important issues of the day, along with going deeper into our individual walks of faith. To share a bit about me, I’m the founder of Significant Man Ministries and I’ve been working with and mentoring men for quite a long time. I lead live immersion events here in the glorious Colorado mountains where I live, and I also lead a weekly mastermind for Christian men. I’ve made lots of mistakes over my life, and I've learned a ton from the guys I’ve had the privilege of working with. I look forward to going on a journey with you over the lifetime of this show, as we learn together. Every week I’ll post a new episode with a guest who is here to share a relevant topic with you. And every now and then I’ll also post an additional episode that's just me sharing my own thoughts with you. This show is a place for you to come to get renewed, refocused, restored, and recharged from the chaos, noise, and busyness of life. So with all that being said, thanks for being here, make sure you subscribe, and let’s get started! To learn more about the Significant Man BASECAMP live events in Colorado, click here .
