56. Shocking What One Man Had to Endure to Get a Brand New RV
Buying a brand new RV is an exciting and fun experience. However, for one man it was a rough road. We introduce you to Danny from Los Angeles, who tells you what he, and his wife, PJ, had to endure to get a brand new RV. Three of them were flawed and one was accidently wrecked. But, the dealer stepped up and Danny got his new motorhome that he and his family thoroughly enjoy. Patti and I also give you an important tip about why you should fill your water tank when you arrive at an RV campsite or park. If you are going to boondock, you should travel with a full tank. We travel light with a small amount of water to get better fuel mileage. However, RV parks and campsites can suddenly turn off the water due to old pipes breaking or other issues. Be prepared. 55. From a Devastating Wildfire in Paradise to Full Time RVing
On Thursday November 8th, 2018, the most destructive wildfire in California's history occurred in Northern California’s Butte County. Within 4 hours, the towns of Paradise and Concow were almost completely destroyed by the catastrophic wildfire. Over 85 people lost their lives. 18,000 structures burned to the ground. Jeff and Patti met Scott and Lynn Taylor, at an RV resort in Palm Springs, California. For 25 years Scott and Lynn lived in Paradise, California and tell their story about how they were able to get out of the deadly path of the fire with their RV and a few possessions. Their amazing story of leaving their home on a moment’s notice and eventually living in their RV is not to be missed. 35. RVing the Great Lakes, Shipwrecks, and the SS Edmund Fitzgerald
Learn more about some of the sunken ships that linger under the surface of the Great Lakes in this week’s episode of “Rocking the RV Life.” Podcast hosts Jeff and Patti Kinzbach have been exploring the Great Lakes in their RV this summer, and recently stopped by Whitefish Point in Michigan: an area which hosts the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. Whitefish Point is famous for a lighthouse built in 1849, as well as the museum. It is approximately a 1.5 hours drive from the Mackinac Bridge. The museum features superb exhibits of shipwreck artifacts, artwork, and shipwreck models. On November 10th, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald and another vessel, the SS Arthur M Anderson, departed ports on western Lake Superior to begin their voyages east to the Sault Ste. Marie locks and eventually the lower Great Lakes. The Anderson was about 10 miles behind the Edmund Fitzgerald. Both ships were in constant contact via radio when they encountered the storm. The Edmund Fitzgerald sank 17 miles away from Whitefish Point, killing all 29 crewmen aboard. The shipwreck later gained infamy, even inspiring Gordon Lightfoot’s hit song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” One of the museum’s most iconic artifacts is the SS Edmund Fitzgerald’s original bell. Jeff and Patti interviewed the museum’s historical interpreter Andrew Schneider to hear more about the history of the shipwreck. 34. Crossing the Most Amazing Bridge in the Land, the Mackinac Bridge
RVing through Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas gives you a chance to experience what many refer to as the “8th Wonder of the World”, the Mackinac Bridge, which opened to traffic on November 1, 1957. Jeff & Patti interview Mackinac Bridge Director Kim Nowack, who details the characteristics of the famous bridge as well as interesting things that happen daily. Even Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs filmed an episode with the maintenance crew back in 2007. Mackinac Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere, connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. From the city of St. Ignace on the north end to the village of Mackinaw City on the south end, the views are spectacular. If you haven’t driven across the Big Mac Bridge, put it on your bucket list. The maximum depth of the water at midspan is 295 feet, the height of the main towers above the water is 552 feet, and the height of the roadway above the water at midspan is 199 feet. Ships can easily pass under it. Also, the length is a staggering 26,372 feet long! The “Tip of the Week” is to inspect your camping site before you set up or pull into it. This will prevent you from experiencing what happened to Jeff & Patti. They had to be towed out of a camping site in one of Michigan’s State Parks. 33. Underwear Changing Moments!
Traveling and camping is not just about buying an RV and hitting the road. On this week’s Rocking the RV Life podcast, Jeff and Patti Kinzbach talk with veteran RVer Dave Johnson about his many experiences, including some underwear-changing moments with his trailer. Johnson and his wife Joanne have been through a lot, including fires, bears, bison and more. Tip of the Week: The Kinzbachs say make sure you are always aware of your surroundings, including the weather, and never scrimp on safety features such as a good GPS for recreational vehicles. Also, a tire-pressure monitoring system can give an early indication of possible problems. (Johnson talks about how this system saved him while traveling.) The Kinzbachs have been living out of their RV and traveling North America since Jeff retired from the radio business in September 2020. 7. Oregon Coast Road Trip Adventure Without a Plan
It helps to have reservations, however, by the time Jeff and Patti left Portland, Oregon, their route had changed. Forest fires diverted them from heading south to Lake Tahoe to instead making their way to the Pacific West Coast. They had so much fun winging it. In Tillamook, Oregon, they stayed at a Harvest Host, The Blue Heron French Cheese Company. And Jeff and Patti visited the Tillamook Cheese Creamery. Without a plan, they found some wonderful campgrounds, including an Oregon State Park campground right on the beach, and a harbor view RV park in Garibaldi, Oregon. 6. RV Repair, Going North on an RV Ford Chassis That Went South!
Jeff & Patti's RV needed repairs in Nappanee, Indiana. After that they headed to Portland, Oregon. However, they were still waiting for an important recall fix on the rear axle. A Ford dealership in Torrington, Wyoming finally received the parts, called them and they made a special stop to have it serviced. But, they didn't do a good job. An hour and a half later, after they were back on the road, they once again had warning lights flashing on their dashboard instruments. About a thousand miles later, Northside Ford Truck Sales in Portland, Oregon came through. 5. RV Refrigerator Fails, Why it Took So Long to Get Repaired.
Jeff & Patti’s refrigerator on their new RV suddenly stopped working. They were in Colorado at the time and finding anyone to service it turned into a nightmare. Adding to that frustration, the temperature at the time was just over 100 degrees.
