So...things are feeling more than a little fascist in the USA right now. Todo mal, pero no a falta de resistencia. This week we are re-running an episode from last year in which we talk about the global rise of fascism, historical context around the ebbs and flows of progress and backlash, and of course, the soundtrack of resistance. Whether it’s the musicians who resisted the 1960’s rise of right-wing dictators in Latin America as part of the Nueva Canción movement, artists who are making political resistance music today, or songs that might not be outright political at all, but help us see (and feel!) what a better future might look like—music is here to fuel us as we fight back. This week we're re-running an episode exploring the Latin American folk music movement that was La Nueva Canción. Fueled by leftist politics and the integration of indigenous musical elements and instruments, La Nueva Canción produced incredible and inspirational folk music across the region and continues to influence the music we love today. ***Also, we had a math struggle this epi! Violeta Parra was born in 1917, so she was actually in her 50s when she died, not in her 30s! We’re back with a brand new episode, this time an interview with Shariana Ferrer-Núñez, co-founder of La Colectiva Feminista en Contrucción, a Puerto Rican grassroots group. They were very involved in the 2019 protests that forced the resignation of Governor Ricky Roselló, protests that utilized what came to be known as “perreo combativo.” It’s a really great conversation with Shariana about their broader political work and the role of things like reggaeton and perreo in organizing. Juan Luis Guerra’s “Bachata Rosa” is an iconic album credited with bringing Dominican genres to the rest of the world. Over thirty years after its release, the album’s status as a classic is undeniable. But bachata and merengue both had long histories before Juan Luis Guerra, and bachata specifically - previously seen as a low-class and vulgar style - came to be seen in a whole new light after the album’s release, paving the way for many to come after. But what does it mean when a historically Black rural genre garners respect once a white Dominican presents it to the world with a shiny pop treatment? Featuring music by Juan Luis Guerra and his longtime backup band, 440. Show notes: https://bit.ly/3QEuLIx Follow us: instagram.com/RadioMenea twitter.com/RadioMenea tinyletter.com/RadioMenea

It’s 1999. Ricky Martin is about to take the gringo Grammy’s stage with a historic performance. The beginning of what became known as the “Latin Explosion,” it ushered in a new Latin Boom moment. Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and the rise of commercial reggaeton shortly would follow. The moment passes, and then in 2017: Despacito. Is anything different? In part two of our Latin Boom series, we detail the rise of Latin artists to the American mainstream from the new millennium to the current moment. Every so often, Latin rhythms - read, Afro-Latino rhythms - make it to the U.S. mainstream. And yet, with few exceptions, these “Latin booms” present something very particular: a whitewashed yet racialized exotic designed for white consumption. In our two-part series on Latin Booms, we explore the booms and the busts, the times in between, and whether we see a different future ahead for Latin music. This week, the 1950s mambo craze and the weird era - between the mambo craze’s death post-Cuban revolution and the 90s Latin explosion - that brought us from Santana to the Miami Sound Machine. As uprisings around the country forced people across industries to reckon with the ways racism in general and anti-Blackness in particular shows up, the music industry was no exception. As soon as Republic Records dropped “urban” as a category for music of Black origin, a conversation about the role of “urbano” in the Latin space began. This week, we are honored to have two of the people leading that conversation on the show: Jenny Mota and Gata (AKA Katelina Eccleston). On today's episode we say goodbye to our little meneitos! We're on the verge of redesigning our format and have decided it's time to move on from these mini-episodes. But we've got one last for you where we talk about the songs we are digging right now. As usual, it's an eclectic mix--throwback Bronx bachata, queer Latin trap, Latinx pop and a tropical jam. We're also asking you to take a few minutes to give us some feedback about our show! We'd love to know what you like, what you don't like, what you want to see more of. This week we're getting historical, and exploring the Latin American folk music movement that was La Nueva Canción. Thanksgiving? No creo. There is no way to cover the nuances and diversity of music of Colombia in six songs, pero we hope that this selection encourages you to search for más y más! You'd be hard pressed to find someone who wouldn't agree that 2016 has been a shit year. Tragedy after tragedy, deaths of many famous people we love (JuanGa!), and now we're facing a scary political future under the Orange Chupacabra. But one thing that 2016 didn't disappoint on was really great music. So we're closing out the year by bringing you some of our favorites from 2016. Let's find solace in the music we loved, and then say vete al carajo to 2016. Featuring music by Jacob Forever, Xenia Rubinos, Sebastian Yatra, Helado Negro, Nicky Jam, and El Bles. Protest has always been a necessary tool for changing our worlds into something better - Orange Chupacabra or no - and it's best when music goes along for the ride. Today we tackle protest and music. Featuring music by Ana Tijoux, Aventura, La Santa Cecilia, Luis Enrique, Lido Pimienta and Nire. Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2016/12/02/episode-18-protest

Real talk: We had this episode planned way before the orange chupacabra surprised everyone, including himself, and somehow won the U.S. Presidency. But the subject felt all too real for us this week as we reflected on the state of affairs, particularly for our queer POC familia. In this week's episode, we talk about all our political feels, and then get into the music that brings us back to those broken-hearted love moments. It's okay to have a big ol' ugly cry, either for the one that got away, or for the scary political future we are facing. Cuídense, amores. Featuring music by Carla Morrison, Mon Laferte, Leny, Deborah Blues, Alexis y Fido, and Ibeyi. Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2016/11/18/episode-17-heartbreak

Today we have a first for you: a full episode dedicated to musicians from one country. Esta vez: Venezuela! Though by no means a survey of the vast musical output and traditions of Vero's magical homeland, we bring you some of our faves, old standbys, and hints about movidas and heavyweights in the country and across the diaspora. Está cheverísimo, so no te lo pierdas! Featuring music by Algodón Egipcio, Oscar D'Leon, Arca, Chino y Nacho, Gabylonia, and Simón Díaz. Ok, confesamos: this might be the weirdest song collection you've ever gotten from us. But strange is the order of the day, porque this week's episode brings you songs inspired by Halloween, that curious U.S. holiday of pumpkins and (hopefully non-racist, non-sexist) costumes. So grab your masks, put on your best vampiresa makeup, or drip some fake blood on your face and get spooky with us! Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2016/10/21/episode-15-halloween Featuring music from Johnny Prez, Total Freedom, Los Rakas, Las Sucias, El Gran Combo, and María y José.

But we’re also bringing this theme because we want to talk about the activist movement that brought us together–reproductive justice. When we heard the news, we were speechless. Juan Gabriel was not just a singer and a songwriter - he was legendary. Over the years his songs brought us joy, his fabulous outfits gave us life, and his flamboyant performances served as the launchpad for countless family conversations about sexuality and gendered performance. For queer Latinxs, he was one of our icons. This is a Radio Menea first: we're dedicating today's entire episode to one artist's life, music, and impact. Que en paz descanses, JuanGa - we'll never forget you. Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2016/09/09/episode-12-juanga

This is the episode that we had planned to release the week that the Orlando massacre happened. We hope you've been taking time to grieve and heal and be with your people in the time since. Now we're bringing it back to our regularly scheduled programming with a lighter topic: deseo. Desire is a huge theme in music, and especially Latinx music, and we get into all the things this topic brings up. Listen in to hear some of our favorite songs that address some of the ways desire shows up in our lives. The feeling you get when you are just inexplicably drawn to someone, when you meet someone on the dance floor, when you just can't get someone out of your head.
