Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! For Episode 221 of our award-winning podcast , we take on Meta and discuss their “fair use” of seven million literary works to train their artificial intelligence system. For those untouched by the controversy, we referred Keziah Weir’s excellent Vanity Fair article, “This Is How Meta AI Staffers Deemed More Than 7 Million Books to Have No “Economic Value” ( link ) and cite this paragraph as background: “Lawyers for Meta are indeed invoking that very “fair use” defense in a copyright suit that’s been wending its way through the Northern District of California legal system for nearly two years . Richard Kadrey et al. v. Meta Platforms—and the reams of confidential Meta communications, newly in the public record as exhibits for the plaintiffs—offers an unprecedented look at the internal maneuverings behind the company’s decision to train its model on a database containing more than 7 million pirated books.” As writers, CC and I have strong opinions about the subject, and we are in sync about how we came to this point, and we agree that the damage is done, and that “the horse has left the barn and it ain’t coming back.” We have different and, I think, interesting opinions about the outcomes to this controversy. For our discussion, we pull in: -The Lord of the Rings, -Carolyn Keene and Franklin W. Dixon, -Thomas Edison, -Covenant ( the movie), -John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway, -CC’s professional and extensive experience on the “fair use” issue, and -Our short-lived use of Artificial Intelligence (not what you think). Aside from AI, we bring you up to speed on current events, including CIMA and our book signing on Saturday, and we talk about our current writing projects and how we're abused by our editors ( no names mentioned )(kidding!). And we started a presale on Serving Salvation Book Two . Check us out and let us know what you think. TIA! LYL! Our Website: <a href="http://www.carsonhume.com/" target="_blank" rel="ugc noopener

Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! For Episode 220 of our award-winning podcast , we were busy and we are tired. We started the week on Sunday, April 13 with the book signing at the Nevada State Museum. We got to meet new friends and sell them our books. We got to chat with our fellow independent writers. We got to enjoy a beautiful spring day in a place that has so many memories for us. A great day. During the week, we organized the release of Serving Salvation Book Two , the next book in the Salvation series. We’re put the manuscript and cover on some of the platforms, and we put the manuscript on Book Sirens. (Please let us know if you want to be an ARC reader.) We’ll be doing a cover reveal soon, along with the pre-sale. Also this week, we learned that the Las Vegas Clark County Library System purchased our book catalogue. They are making our ebooks available for checkout. This is the second public library in Nevada to purchase our catalog, and it’s the largest system in the state. If you are a patron of the Churchill County Library or the Clark County Library , please enjoy our ebooks through your Libby app for free! On Saturday, we recorded the first six podcasts for the Nevada Authors Network (NAN) at the Sierra Arts Foundation (SAF) Deport Art Gallery and Bookstore in Sparks. It was an absolute joy to talk about writing one-on-one with our colleagues, all of whom are very articulate and passionate about their books. You are our people. We will begin releasing the NAN podcasts and videos beginning on Wednesday, May 7, and our first guest will be Tia Flores, SAF program director. Tune in! We’re getting ready for Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 26, because we have an independent bookstore . We are joining One More Chapter in their grand opening on the same day, along with many of our author colleagues, and doing a book signing. If you’re in the area, stop by the Old Post Office next to the Pioneer Center in d

Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! For Episode 219 of our award-winning podcast , we believe in you, the independent writer. As we enter the final prep for our book signing at the Nevada State Museum, we’re giving you (and us) a pep talk. When we started this full-time writing gig a year ago, we knew we’d be riding a roller coaster of feelings, expectations, and disappointment. But golly, what a ride, especially in the last six months. The economy has not been our friend, and we’ve had to scale back plans and dreams accordingly. Not scaled back: our belief in our colleagues and ourselves. April is Independent Writers Month, and more than ever, we need to pull together and lift each other up. This is one reason why we are partnering with the Sierra Arts Foundation . We hope to give indy writers another marketing platform to talk about themselves and their works. Streets and buildings make a town, but it’s creative art that makes it a community, and writers are artists. Keep writing and keep believing in yourself. If you need strength, we’re happy to share some of ours. You got this! Reminders: -We will be at the Nevada State Museum on Sunday, April 13 for a book signing. Please join us! -We will be recording a second podcast for the Nevada Authors Network on April 19 for release in May. -Prices are slashed on bookstore. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! For Episode 218 of our award-winning podcast , we’re all about baseball, and frankly, I’m surprised we don’t talk more about baseball on our little writers podcast. We went to Game 3 of the Athletics home opener in West Sacramento, and we joined a few thousand of our close friends as they took on our Chicago Cubs. It was a three-day celebration of Rickey Henderson, the Man of Steal, whose accomplishments and personality transcended the sport. So much love for the Rickey! We have been true-blue Cubs fans since the 1980s. We talk about our own Northside experiences and our time in Sutter Health Field. It wasn’t all baseball. We spent time with family and we visited the Capital Books in downtown Sacramento. We had fun talking about writing with folks who don’t write (authors will get this). Important announcements: -We will be at the Nevada State Museum on Sunday, April 13 for a book signing. Please join us! -We will be recording a second podcast for the Nevada Authors Network on April 19 for release in May. -Prices are slashed on bookstore. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! In Episode 217 of our award-winning podcast , we’re wrapping up March 2025, and we find that we had a “slow” month. We do our monthly wrap-up and learn that March 2025 didn’t have a lot of bells and whistles like previous months. It’s not to say it wasn’t exciting, but it was busy. Significantly, we used the time to prepare for our upcoming events: -On April 13, we’re doing a book signing at the Nevada State Museum . -Later in April, we start recording podcast of the Nevada Authors Network (NAN) in partnership with the Sierra Arts Foundation . -In June, we’re doing another book signing, this time at the Reno Barnes and Noble on South Virginia Street. Part of the prep was a small road trip to Sparks, Nevada to visit the SAF Depot Gallery and Bookstore, pictured above. We’ll be doing our NAN podcasts there. We also visited the Sparks Heritage Museum in Victoria Square, and we saw pictures and exhibits that reminded us of the good ol days. Both are worthy places to visit, along with all of Victorian Square. We chatted about editing and writing, of course, and we outlined our upcoming releases (these dates are not set in stone): -May 2025: Serving Salvation Book 2 . -June 2025: Virginia City Romance (Restless Spirits Book 1). -July 2025: Serving Salvation Book 3 . -September 2025: Restless Spirits Book 2. -October 2025: A Sheriff in Nevada Book 3. Finally, we celebrated CC’s first year of retirement, and what a year it was, too. Please check out our podcast and let us know what you think. TIA LYL! Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! In Episode 216 of our award-winning podcast , we can’t get away from our brains. Intellectually, we knew being full-time writers and running a business was an around-the-clock experience, but now that we’re immersed, the reality of a 24/7 existence has set in. When we’re not writing, we’re thinking about our business. When we’re not doing business things, CC and I talking about our marketing and expanding (or talking about writing). In the podcast, we chat about this “new” life, and we try to come up with ideas on how to escape from ourselves. More importantly, we ask for your ideas. We’re happy to announce two signing events where local folks have a chance to meet us in public: one in April and one in July. Another big announcement: we slashed prices in our book store! Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! In Episode 215 of our lovely award-winning podcast , it’s the economy, silly. Every independent writer is a business to some degree, and all of us make tough decisions about how we spend our money. CC and I had dreams above traveling and doing book signings and stuff, but the current economy is not kind to indy writers. There are the Amazon and billionaire boycotts, not to mention how everyone has to do an extra budgeting just to buy eggs. We use this space to talk about those challenges and what we’re doing to mitigate them, starting with our online bookstore and being careful on choosing events. With these challenges, why do we do what we do? Because we love writing and we love meeting people who want to talk about writing. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! Two Moore Books, LLC does not receive financial compensation for promoting the below businesses and websites. We are speaking to our specific experiences. Your mileage may vary. In Episode 214 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we had another great week with a lot of different moving parts: You can now find our books on the shelves at Thistle and Nightshade , a wonder little bookstore in Reno, Nevada. Our sincere appreciation to Alyx (pictured) and Rhiannon for adding us to their expansive and varied inventory. You can find Thistle and Nightside in northwest Reno off Mae Anne Avenue. Definitely worth your time! We announced at the last meeting of the Sierra Arts Literary Community that we are offering our podcast and video services to writers. We're partnering with the Sierra Arts Foundation (SAF) to release a weekly podcast and video featuring a Sierra Nevada writer and their upcoming book. We know from our experience that marketing is a steep climb for independent writers, so we’re hoping our efforts with writers and the SAF will elevate the visibility of Northern Nevada’s excellent writers. We hope to start in May. Happy birthday to CC’s Dad and Happy Employee Appreciate Day (Friday), and a special hello to International Women’s Day. CC joined 44 other powerful women gathered on the Women’s Podcasting Network to discuss their individual podcasts and respective businesses. CC learned a lot about how women around the road are making a difference in the world (like her!). We participated in the Smashwords “25% off ebook sale” (our books always seem to be on sale), and we began the registration process for this year’s Carson Farmers Market . And somehow we managed to advance our writing projects. CC is still untying the Gordian knot that is her VC Ghost romance, and I passed 40K words on the third book of the “Sheriff in Nevada” series. We rejiggered our production schedule because the CFO for Two Moore Books, LLC (who is me) got grouchy about business expenditures. The upside for you, our fans, is our book release schedule extends into 2026 now. Whew. We ma

In Episode 213 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we wrap up February 2025. A lot of things happened in our little creative corner of the literary world. Incomplete list: ZOEY : the release, the reviews, and the sales. Related: we talked about the importance of writers having a media package. We have a new local partner for some of our physical books. CC is celebrating International Women’s Day with the Women in Podcasting Network . We permanently dropped the cost of two books on our online bookstore . “ The Tucci Chronicles ” are still on sale. Our e-books and paperbacks can be found on thirteen new distributors via Draft2Digital . Related: One of them, Smashwords , is having e-book sale (25% off). Woo! Our currents works in progress. February was a full month and the rest of 2025 looks exactly the same. Sit down, buckle up, and have fun! Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! In Episode 212 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we talk about Draft2Digital and how we’re using it to expand our books to libraries and book sellers around the world. I was also publicly embarrassed about three of my books. [Important: Two Moore Books, LLC is not compensated by vendors when we discuss their products and websites. We are discussing our interactions and experiences. Your mileage may vary.] CC discovered Draft2Digital which “distribute[s] ebook and paperback books to all the major retailers online, plus hundreds of storefronts worldwide.” We’re using it to get our inventory onto more book websites and, most importantly, into all flavors of libraries. We talk about the creation process, as well as the profit margins and lessons learned. We are definitely excited to see our books all over the world. [Spoiler: E-books were super easy if you already have the materials and blurbs on hand.] Understandably, most library sites will not accept NSFW novels like “The Tucci Chronicles,” which is very graphic. It’s a compilation of two books: “Love & Death on I-80 West” and “Starting Over in Las Vegas.” If you watch our YouTube, you’ll see me turn very red when I talk about these books. We have a bunch of “Tucci” paperbacks in our inventory, so we’re doing a sale: “The Tucci Chronicles” is available on our website for $20 . CC discussed Milanote and how she is using it to organize her ongoing efforts with her VC Ghost manuscript. ZOEY is still on sale for 99¢ and will be released soon. Here’s our online bookstore . In Episode 211 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we salute Wham! and the fortieth anniversary of their mega-hit Careless Whisper. Where has the time gone? Aside from George and Andrew, the main topic is inserting real life (RL) characters and events in your books. As writers, the temptation is strong to include someone from RL into our books because they may be very interesting or very frustrating. CC and I outline both the good and not-so-good reasons for using the people you know in your books. We also touch on using popular culture references (hello, Backstreet Boys!). Also: holding a business retreat at the very top of the wheel at Harveys; a tease about a new physical outlet for our books; ZOEY is still on sale for 99¢ and will be released soon. Advanced reader copies of ZOEY are available on Book Sirens . Here’s the story about the bomb and explosion at Harveys in 1980. Here is CC’s YouTube channel that she mentioned. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! In Episode 210 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we dive into the most critical phase of your book aside from its creation: the editing. After weeks (or months or years) of writing your Great American Novel, it’s time to hand your baby to another set of eyes and hands. But who should you hand it to and what are they going to do? For our podcast, we use Louise Harnby’s excellent post “What are the different types of novel editing?” as a guide to walk you through the editing process. We sprinkle in our own experiences with our excellent editors, and we offer suggestions to writers who may not have the financial resources to hire their own editors. We hope you find this information useful. On the local front, the ZOEY e-book is on pre-sale for 99¢ , and I am going through CC’s VC Ghost manuscript. Have a listen and let us know what you think. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! In Episode 209 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we welcomed everyone to Groundhog Day, and we rolled back to the fun we had in January. Finding Salvation Part One was released, CC finished her Virginia City Ghost manuscript and sent it to her main beta reader, and we began the process of setting up ZOEY for pre-sale. So many hours and sweat expended on those alone. The first of the two main topics was the process of picking the covers for ZOEY, and we ended up with two wonderful covers. Mihai Costea created the “Cowboy Cover” and Mohammad Akram did the “Blue Cover.” Both artists did a fantastic job, and they were exceptionally professional and patient with our suggestions. You can reach out to them directly through 99Designs. Important Note: If you want to read ZOEY before the release on February 28 and do me a favor at the same time, you can download an advanced reader copy through Book Sirens . Check it out! The second topic is we opened an online bookstore ! It was a comedy of errors, of course, but working on it had me thinking about living day to day versus living towards a dream. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! Welcome to Episode 208 of our lovely award-winning podcast . Being a Monday, we were a day late and several brain cells short, but hey, we survived a sleepover with our young grandchild and we think we made an interesting episode. Business first: Finding Salvation Part One is still on pre-sale for 99 cents and will be released this Friday, January 31 (yay). On Sunday, February 2, which happens to be Groundhog Day, we’ll be doing the cover reveal for ZOEY on the podcast. The reveal for two covers, that is. You’ll see. Shameless plug: We are providing books for sale to this week’s Sierra Arts Foundation fundraiser, Brew Ha Ha. This is a worthy cause, so please check it out if you’re in the Carson/Reno/Sparks area. Writing: CC continues to see the light at the end of the railroad tunnel as she cleans up her “Virginia City Ghost” (working title) manuscript. She might send it out to the Betas in February. She may do her own book cover, too. Our main topic was writing in the Young Adult (YA) genre which is one of three very successful writing genres here in the Twenty-First Century (zombies and vampires being the others). CC and I happen to be reading YA books at the same time, so we’re picking up common themes: -YA books are almost instantly relatable because we’ve all been there. -YA epiphanies hit harder. -There’s a freshness in experiencing “real life” for the first time that jaded adults don’t enjoy anymore. -Fifteen year old girls/women can be dramatically different than fifteen year old boys/men. We talk at length about these and other themes that can shape a YA novel, including poverty and religion. We use The Hunger Games and Pleasantville to illustrate our points, and we manage for the most part to avoid that boy wizard (you know who). Have a listen and let us know what you think. TIA LYL! We’re caffeinated for Episode 207 of our lovely award-winning podcast . Seriously, we are buzzed . We changed our coffee habits for reasons, but had a big cup during this episode. We brought a lot of energy to this podcast: Happy Birthday to our kid (tomorrow), my grandmother, Dolly Parton, and Edgar Allen Poe! Many thanks to Jacci Turner for her half-book review of “From Tundra to Tiara.” Related: please check out her books . We said goodbye to TikTok which may be back this week. (Edit: it's back) Finding Salvation is still on 99¢ Presale and will be released on January 31. My books Sheriff and Downfall ( books page ) will be available for sale at this year’s Brew HaHa . The Sierra Arts Foundation's big fundraiser of the year will feature books from local authors, plus some of the local authors themselves. Please check it out and spend a lot of money for a great cause. CC had the wonderful experience this week of completing her “VC romance” manuscript. Finishing your first draft is a heady experience. The meat of the podcast was the various stages of editing. Writers have a love/hate relationship with the process. Some of us are blessed to have excellent editors (Hi, Teri and Red Adept !) which makes our lives easier. We’re also blessed to have awesome Beta Readers. But it’s still a nerve-racking experience as we watch our “babies” (manuscripts) get changed at the hands of a third party. We talk about the strengths and weaknesses of self-editing versus paying someone with their fresh set of eyes. As we say: “Writing is deeply personal experience done in the bright public light.” Have a listen and let us know what you think. TIA LYL! Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! Our last podcast audio track got corrupted, so this is the real Episode 206 of our lovely award-winning podcast . I made the mistake of reading a popular piece of fiction that sold millions of copies and was made into a movie, earning hundreds of millions. The mistake was thinking, “Why am I writing what I’m writing and not what this writer is writing?” The differences between us in style and voice are extensive, and I like what I’m doing, yet this writer is sipping cocktails on the French Riviera while I’m drinking Jack in the Box coffee in Carson City. Does every published writer struggle with this comparison? CC and I talk about this. Other happenings: -We had a LOT of fun In Virginia City . - Finding Salvation is still on sale for 99 cents . Please grab it, especially if you have Amazon credits. -You can get advanced reader copies on Finding Salvation and ZOEY on Book Sirens. - Our LLC is real ! Huzzah! - Two Moore Designs is out there if you want the interior of your manuscript designed for free! -Our books will be on more shelves in Carson City soon, and we’ll be a State of Nevada vendor. -We might have an interesting road trip to chat about in the future. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! For Episode 205 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we look forward to 2025 and how we had to hit the ground running! We were retired slackers for much of December 2024, though we did get organized and got Finding Salvation Part One out the door. Our plan was to relax in December 2024 and get to work in January 2025. January must have heard us because everything that can happen to a writer happened to us in the first two days of the month, including manuscripts returned by our editors, LLC paperwork back from our lawyer, and a half dozen other things that keep writers busy. Whew. We again plug the Sierra Arts Foundation and their fantastic support of Nevada writers. Through them, we are getting out of the house and getting our Nevada-centric novels on bookshelves. We are grateful. One thing we inflicted on ourselves is our trip to Virginia City where we will spend the night in one of VC’s most haunted hotels (so they say). CC is working on a paranormal romance set on the Comstock Lode in 1875 at the height of Nevada’s Silver Rush, so we’re doing the hotel for literary ambiance. We’re suffering for our art, and our readers, because we care. We’ll probably travel outside of Nevada once or twice this year. We’ve done almost every US state together, and we’ve seen Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, and Scotland. Will we discover new lands or go back to old haunts? You’ll probably know when we know. The new years will see us releasing more books: Finding Salvation Part One on January 31 (99 cents!) ZOEY in February or March Serving Salvation Book Two in 2025 CC’s Virginia City ghost book in mid-2025 If you want to see advanced copies, check out Book Sirens where you can become an advanced review copy (ARC) reader and leave reviews. Writers love reviews, even bad ones! Here we are, five days into 2025, and it’s already shaping up to be an exciting time for the CEO and her Chief Minion here at Two Moore Books, LLC. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! For Episode 204 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we do our 2024 rewind and hit these high points: CC received international recognition from the Women in Podcasting team by winning the best podcast in the Books and Writing category. That was a fantastic accomplishment! We traveled the breadth and width of the United States by car, along with trips along the length of California. We also traveled to Vancouver Island and took two voyages on the BC ferry. That was fun. On the writing side, we somehow only published the one book: Serving Salvation Part One. We had plans to publish more, but real life got in the way (nothing bad; just complicated). Thanks to our membership in the Sierra Arts Foundation, we placed the Sheriff books on the shelves on the Depot Gallery and Bookstore in Sparks, Nevada. Thanks to Teri in Fallon, Nevada, the same books found a home in the Churchill County Library. They can also be found in Nevada State Library and through their Talking Books Program. So why did we do this public rewind? The less important reason is to remind CC and me that we’re getting things done. Life moves fast, and sometimes we get caught up in the trees and forget to look at the forest. The more important reason is we want to show our colleagues, the self-published writers, is that you can achieve success once you believe in yourself and give yourself permission to do great things. If you feel it’s necessary, her’s your permission and here’s your sign. Go out and do great things! We believe in you. TIA LYL. For Episode 202 of our lovely award-winning podcast , we dive into our holiday tradition of watching Christmas movies. We did our regular rotation of Christmas Vacation, Love Actually, and Die Hard. We auditioned three movies for possible inclusion: Scrooged, Batman Returns, and Red One. Minor spoilage on all of these movies. We ended the podcast with our memories of our first Christmas together (in 1981!) and how it led to me proposing to CC on New Year’s Day 1982. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! It’s Episode 201 of our silly little podcast, so we discuss a significant movie from our youth: 2001: A Space Odyssey . We thoroughly spoil this fifty-six year old movie, but it’s for a good cause because it is one of the greatest movies of our lifetime. This Clarke/Kubrick masterpiece is complex, visual, mind bending, and hopeful. From the opening sequence to the war for the waterhole to the Starchild looking down on Earth, we describe how this movie shows how far Humanity has evolved, but in some ways, hasn’t evolved at all. We had a great discussion, and we do our best to discuss the impact of the writing and production values, but I’m not sure we did it justice. We're having a lot of fun on our award-winning podcast . Also discussed: the holidays, the state of our Works in Progress, Two Moore Designs, and some of our big plans for the new year. We were busy in 2024, but 2025 will blow the doors off. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! Busy week here at the World-Wide Headquarters. So busy, if fact, that we didn’t get to today’s chosen topic. We'll do that next week. We touched on a lot: We talk about the fun of being fan-owners of the Oakland Ballers, a pro baseball team that proudly represents the East Bay. We flash our Ballers colors! We also talk about our favorite MLB American League team, the Athletics. (I predict where they will ultimately land.) We donated books to Nevada Talking Book Services, “a free library service for Nevadans who are unable to use standard print materials due to a visual or physical disability.” We were happy to support this very worthy cause. We are selling books in the Depot Gallery Book Store in Sparks, Nevada, through the Sierra Arts Foundation. That feels fantastic, especially when they sent me my first hardcopy check. “Two Moore Books LLC” continues to develop, and we spent time on the money aspect of our investment. We are doing an LLC for a feeling of authenticity and legitimacy, but I can’t feel like we’re hemorrhaging money. On the other hand, this is our dream: to be full-time writers, and we don’t own a pair of Harley Davidsons. (We thank Sayyar Lw for guiding us through the process.) Related to this is me starting a side gig to help writers format the interior of their books using the Atticus application. I’m looking for writers to help me experiment with this, so I'll do a couple of manuscripts for free. If you have a handy manuscript, let’s work together to make it a better ebook or paperback for posting to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple, Kobo, and Google. Here’s the link . Writing: we actually did writing this week! CC is making great progress on her book based in Virginia City, and my books “ZOEY” and “Finding Salvation Part One” are in the final stages of publication. We’ll start releasing these books in the next few weeks (we hope). We thank Red Adept Editing for their patience and support. Finally, we’re thinking of doing a “Black Friday to Small Business Saturday to Cyber Monday” sale on some of our books. Once we figure out the details, we’ll get it out on social media. Whew! We told you we were busy. Have a listen and let us know what you think. TIA LYL! Here are the links of the companies we talked about in today’s podcast. We receive no financial compensation for discussing them or providing these links: Oakland Ballers: https://www.oak

Ep 197 of our writer’s podcast for writers is “Weird Reasons We Write.” Our award-winning podcast lately has been stuck at the end of the writing process, like dealing with the public after we publish books. This week, we do a rewind and go back to the beginning to talk about why we write. Not the main reason, maybe, but the secondary or “secret menu” reasons. They may fascinate you. We do our usual “current status” segment, and next year is shaping up to be fun for us. We’re creating a business, we’re traveling, and we’re releasing a bunch of books. Ep 196 of our writer’s podcast for writers is “Press Releases.” With CC’s International podcast award, we found ourselves unprepared to take immediate advantage of the good news. We had to sit down and develop a press release on the fly. This led to entries in our local news papers and a live appearance on KOLO TV in Reno, Nevada. Why do you need a press release, you may ask, if all you’re doing is publishing an independent book to Amazon? Because that little extra bit of attention that you manufacture could go a long way in making your book more noticeable in the tsunami of books being released every day. And you have a story to tell! Thank you! “Home Means Nevada.” While neither of us are natives, CC’s and my Silver State roots run very deep to the point that between us, we have seven published and in-progress Nevada-centric books. What literary quality about our home draws us to write about our home? Is it our familiarity with our state’s rich history, landscape, and political structure? We talk about all that and more. We are so happy and honored to announce that our little podcast to help writers write was recognized by the Women Podcaster’s Network . The “CC and JT Amateur Hour” received the 2024 Women in Podcasting Award in the “Best Authors and Books Podcast” category. Our award sponsor, Alex Sanfilippo from Podmatch , said the following at Friday’s virtual award ceremony: “Both of you are really funny. And I’ve been listening to your podcast leading up to this. I love that you two innovate and change and get better for your listeners in real time. And you bring people into the journey. I think that’s a really rare gift in podcasting. So I just wanted to shout that out because I saw you all doing that. And I was like, I like this. And they keep, you all keep humor involved in the process. It’s not like, this is stressful. It’s like, [CC and JT] are having fun.” Per their website, the Women in Podcasting Network is a collaborative movement where members inspire and encourage each other. It’s the largest collective of women podcasters. The Women in Podcasting Awards are international people’s choice style of awards event. Their mission is to elevate women’s voices globally and within the podcasting industry. We began our little show during the pandemic many years ago, and after almost 200 episodes, we are excited to receive this validation. We thank Jennifer Henczel, Founder of Women’s Podcaster’s Network, and we thank the sponsor of the “Best Authors and Books Podcast” category, Alex Sanfilippo from Podmatch. We especially thank our loyal and passionate listeners. We’re happy to do this and we’re happy to keep doing it! TIA LYL!

Episode 189 of our writers podcast for writers is “a book is judged by its cover.” Like it or not, potential readers will pay attention to your book for barely a second unless something from the cover grabs their attention. We talked about those challenges and two book cover contests today: Serving Salvation and Zoey. We had good news on the writing front: Teri from Fallon asked the Churchill County Library to buy A Sheriff in Nevada, and they did! Go check it out. And speaking of Zoey, it is my next Nevada-centric book and it’s looking good! It will be on pre-sale October 31. (By the way, October 31 is the real Nevada Day.) Also discussed: COVID. Episode 188 of our podcast for writers is a fun one for us and we hope for you. Like everyone, we’ve lived some interesting times, so we use those days to play “Three Truths and A Lie.” The twist on our game is how the truths helped make us into the writers we are today. Here’s CC’s list: She was a mistress in high school. She fondled another man’s Oscar. She was in an adult move. She was a reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper. My list: My first published story was about a cat. I spent years going to prison. I almost blew up an apartment building. I sang the National Anthem at a ballgame. What are the truths and which is the lie? We also bring you up to speed on The Two Moore Books production schedule, this week’s book release, the NFL season, the KaboomCon, and the Davis Creek Fire. Episode 186 of our writers podcast for writers is all about CC going back to school, so to speak. She attended two writing summits in August where she learned how to thrive as an author amid distractions, and how to write romances in the Twenty-First Century. She shares many of the valuable lessons she learned, with the most important of those being that we as independent writers are not alone in our marketing and production challenges, and that we all struggle with imposter syndrome at some time. Some lessons learned may or may not apply to your specific situation, so when you listen, your mileage may vary. Related to this, CC is nominated for a Women in Podcaster Award, and this episode demonstrates why she should get your vote . We have updated our About Us and Our Books pages on our website. We’re always thinking about writing, publishing, marketing, social media, or etc. etc. etc. We’re having a lot of fun, but wow: what a lot of work, too. We dive into the shallow end of all this and hope we provide insight. Also discussed: impending pre-sale of Book One of the Space Epic on July 24 (happy birthday to me!), and our upcoming road trip to Canada. Episode 179 of our writers’ podcast for writers is about the evolution from science fiction to science fact in our lifetimes. CC and I grew up in what some may call a “golden age” when we watched how technologies dreamt about on TV and in books became reality. We only have to look at our phones and watches as proof. We discuss how the technological evolution affected our own books, notably my in-progress manuscripts lovingly called The Space Epic. We also chat about our other works in progress and immediate plans for the future (road trip!). Our website is www.carsonhume.com Check us out and let us know what you think. TIA! LYL!

Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! Episode 178 is another look in the sausage-making art of writing a book. This podcast touches on the things that writers do to get words on a page, tasks that “normal” people might find weird or at least a tad abnormal. The key words spoken are “plotter” and “pantser.” We dive into our current projects and we look back at the first half of 2024. What a wild ride it’s been so far. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! What’s fun about Episode 177? Escapism and Free Stuff! For the escapism part, CC goes back in time with her two favorite movies that take her out of the moment and into a time where she felt younger and free. For JT, the old rule about being a writer is true: you have to read and write every day. JT talks about how the Martha Well’s “Murderbot Diaries” reminded him of the masters of science fiction (Heinlein and Asimov). As for free stuff, CC is giving away an autographed book of your choice on Wednesday, June 26, for her birthday. All you have to do is sign up on our website. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! We recently celebrated our 42nd anniversary, so Episode 175 of our podcast for writers is about the challenge of familiarity. We love to watch and read about new romances, and as writers, those books are relatively easy to write. Think Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew (or 10 Things I Hate About You). The steeper climb is writing a book about the older couple who’ve been together for decades and, over time, have developed their own language and culture. Unlike new couples, they can sum up a thirty-minute conversation with just a look. The reality is they often know their partner better than they know themselves. How do you write a book about those couples? We have ideas. We talk about our three active book projects, including the status of The Big A** Trip book. You also get a sneak peek at my writing process when I am triggered by a random book idea. You will see my struggle is real. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! Episode 174 of our writers’ podcast for writers is all about using nature as a character or background for your work. We’ve all encountered nature on some level of our existence, and it serves as a point of commonality around the world, be it a heavy rainstorm, the sound of the ocean, or a sunny day. Nature is a convenient tool in our toolbox because we can use it to quickly connect to our readers and, at the same time, use it to create tension and suspense. Think of “the rising flood waters” or “smoking volcano,” and you’ll immediately understand what I’m saying. We spend some time talking about our social media plan (still in development) and our current projects. Spoiler: we have books coming out in the next year. Episode 173 of our writers podcast has us talking about ingenuity and grit of travelers along the 19th Century road known as the California Trail. CC is writing a historical novel, and it was our good luck when we stumbled upon the California Trail Interpretive Center on the first day of our Big A** Trip across America. This Harry Reid project sits along Interstate 80 (exit 292, to be exact) west of Elko, Nevada, and it provides visitors the in-depth historical look at the mass exodus to California via Nevada. As writers, we talk about our visit, and the mass amount of materials accumulated by the center, to illustrate the importance and fun of doing research for historical fiction. Like our old friend and one-time Nevadan Mark Twain reportedly said, “It's no wonder that truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense.” Check out this podcast and other podcasts at our website www.carsonhume.com TIA LYL! Link to the center: https://www.californiatrailcenter.org

Episode 172 takes us back to our Big A** Trip and what we learned from having our “boots on the ground.” For this podcast, we talk about the surviving remnants of an American-built extreme clipper ship, the Snow Squall. Clippers were cargo ships built for speed over capacity, and extreme clipper ships were especially fast, though their construction era in America was relatively short (1845 to 1855). There is only one surviving piece of an American extreme clipper, and the Maine Maritime Museum has that piece of the Snow Squall contained in its own building on the edge of its beautiful campus. We explain why we think they did this. For more reading: Maine Maritime Museum Link: https://www.mainemaritimemuseum.org/exhibition/snow-squall-an-american-clipper/ Wikipedia Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Squall_(clipper) We also talk about our current projects (Space Epic, Zoey, BAT Book) and easing into retirement. This is the Day Three update of the CC and JT BAT. Here are the Day One and Day Two updates . Episode 167 is from our hotel room in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, and we are bushed. Day Three of the BAT was yesterday, all eleven hours, and we started north from Casper, Wyoming. When we lived in Nebraska in the Stone Age, the phrase was “nothing between here and Canada except for barbed wire.” They were right. Long stretches of road in both WY and SD where there is nothing but bushes. Not even trees. The drive was still very interesting, and we made two of what could have been a dozen stops. Devils Tower is both amazing and a flashback to our youth. I cannot accurate describe the impact on this (and many other) teenage geeks when I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Before we got there, I thought the whole thing was probably an overinflated Hollywood special effect. Nope. It lived up to its hype. We stopped at Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota because the Jedi ghost image of Justin Scarred told us to. Fun place with all sorts of shops and pictures and good food. We’re about to hit the road for Day Four, so let me give you some clicks. Our hashtags for this tip continue to be #ccandjt and #bat2024. Episode 166 of the Amateur Hour is filled with fun as we announce the “CC and JT 2024 Big Ass Trip” (BAT). The usual caveats apply when it comes to a BAT like this, especially one for the road, because real life can happen. I feel Episode 162 should have gigantic Trigger Warning: “Religion is mentioned.” We wade into the minefield as we discuss the influence of religion on how we were raised, how that upbringing influences our writing, and how we as writers choose whether or not to include organized religion in our books. As very small business owners, we have concerns because we no longer believe in the reach and reliability of Twitter/X. We have an active conversation about social media in general, which gives you a peek inside on how CC and I talk things over. But seriously, folks, we dive into the Language of Love and the culture of a relationship, and how we as writers bring all of this to our works in progress. We're talking about communication, gestures, and habits that are unique to each relationship. We use real-life examples of our parents' marriages as well as our own. CC watched TED Talks by author Elizabeth Gilbert of "Eat, Pray, Love" fame as a means to break through her writer's block, and her videos inspired us to talk about the source of a writer's inspiration. We knocked down a series of dominos and ended up with the question: Are some writers divinely inspired by God to write their works, or is creativity the result of the happenstance of physiological neurons and flashes of genius? We included a "Philosophy of Religion" class, the Baha'i' Faith, our conscience, and the one or many faces of God. We also discussed old school driving lessons and our basement. Episode 131 is more free form than usual since we start with Labor Day, muddle around Burning Man, and end up talking at length about the Indiana Jones franchise. Throughout this podcast was the sense and idea of nostalgia. The movie-going experience has changed much in our lifetimes, though we wouldn't say it necessarily has evolved. We also acknowledge that we are not the target audience we used to be. Even so, we feel the impact of entertainment was lost as movies were moved from a dark room with one bright screen to home-centric entertainment systems (streaming services and video games). Dunno if we can be "right or wrong" in something that is unique to all of our personal experiences, but we do have opinions from our chairs on the porch as we watch over our lawn. We spoil Indiana Jones and discuss the challenges of the home of Burning Man (CC used to live out there). What do you think? Have a listen and check us at www.carsonhume.com TIA LYL!

The endless saga of our flooded basement gives us fodder for this week's podcast. Long story short: we're sore. We talk about how the natural process of aging and Life takes a physical toll on our quality of life, and how we as writers can use these experiences to shape our characters. We also discuss how we can learn more about conditions where we have no firsthand experience. Notable examples would be the use of scooters in supermarkets and childbirth. We also touch on how the quality of our physical health can be directly related to our ecomomic status. We cite Alice Walker's The Color Purple , Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes , and John Steinbeck. Yeah, this podcast was not much of a picker-upper, but these are important discussions for creators who write about real life versus those writing for escapism. Is George Lucas good or lucky? Episode 127 of our writers podcast is about writers who capture lightning in a bottle. They submit books and screenplays at just the right time which capture the imagination and take the country by storm. There’s lots of examples, starting with Mr. Lucas. Some folks would point to his pop cultural phenomenon of "Star Wars," but we go to the 1973 classic called " American Graffiti ." This movie almost singlehandedly brought the 1950s nostalgia craze to the forefront of the Seventies and beyond. The movie also had a direct impact on CC's formative years. What's going on with Episode 126 of our writers' podcast? The better question is what isn't going on with this podcast. We have ideas on how to create and use epiphanies in your writing. There's also a discussion on how long you should take to write a book. Where is the gray area of originality when using William Shakespeare's classic works, for example? Modern literature is full of examples of those who boldly took it upon themselves to "copy" the Bard's great works or at least use them as inspiration for their books. Where do we writers draw the line? What is plagiarism? Episode 121 is started slow, but evolved into something interesting and complex. We talked about about our minimal efforts on our works in progress. The challenges for CC is finding the time to hit the keyboard. My challenge is I'm making things up as I go along, so I think I created a readable adventure, but not a viable ending. If you're in a similar situation, we have ideas. We put togethere a mailbox yesterday. Gently speaking, it was our usual comedy of errors. The main gist of the podcast was about the challenge of writing about events we have not experienced first hand, including COVID, Gettysberg, Pearl Harbor, and the 1917 pandemic. One of those things we actually did experience in the last couple of weeks, but for the most part, we writers are challenged when we want to include the feel and taste of times gone by. We also spent time on how folks in the past got swept up in events through herd mentality, and how sometimes the best books are those who stand in front of the tanks. Been a low and slow day at the CC and JT Amateur Hour where "we help writers write" because Spring has finally sprung. Woo! Another polyglot of a podcast from the Worldwide Headquarters where "we like to help writers write." John Grisham and his love for the Deep South is specifically mentioned, as is my books of Nevada. We push our own buttons (again) of the complex subject of social media and the increasing amount of overhead dedicated to advertise our works, almost to the point where we have to sacrifice writing time in lieu of advertising. A difficult balance. We wrap things up with a chat about dialogue and context, and we mention how people mostly listen to others to respond versus really listening to each other (it makes more sense in the podcast). Our single brain is on display in this podcast because we wandered all over the writer's landscape today, starting with writing posture, segueing to mojo and frame of mind, and ending with a chat about writers spending money. We did learn that CC and I had different elementary school experiences. Have a listen! Related: the podcast on Money got a lot of love this week, per the analytics. We're at the end of our first graphic arts class. Hope you enjoy the logo! We also did the usual update of our personal writing projects, so here's the usual reminder that we have a book coming out on January 9, 2023. Preorder it for 99¢ now for the price goes up on January 10, 2023. Here's the link . You can learn all about us at our website: www.carsonhume.com Have a great week, everyone!

Writing believable dialogue is one of the biggest challenges in prose because "dialogue is character," and characters are what drive our books. We bring you up to speed on our own writing projects and the progress of our marketing plan for "From Tundra to Tiara." ( Preorder now for 99¢ before the price jumps to $2.99.) A little bit longer post for this week's podcast. Tomorrow starts the presale of our new book on Amazon. This week, we discuss kicking off our marketing campaign tomorrow (Monday, November 21) with all sorts of plans and incentives. We're doing the title reveal this week and the cover reveal next week. The biggest challenge will be navigating through the uncertainty of social media, which may disappear without warning. Here's our plans to push this book: 1. We will be offering free books from our Amazon libraries ( CC and JT ) sometime in the next few weeks. 2. The new book will be released on Monday, January 9. Between Monday, November 21 and the release date, you can preorder the book for 99¢. On Tuesday, January 10, the price of the book jumps to $2.99. Pre-order while it's cheap! 3. When you preorder the book, reach out to us via our contact page on our website or email ( jthumebooks@gmail.com ) with your name and address. We'll send you a holiday slash thank you card with our picture and special message. We will put together a mailing list someday, but if you have a WordPress account, you can get automatic updates from our blog posts. We are doing all of this extra stress and anxiety to ourselves because we believe in our book and we believe in you. Thank you for playing along. Our website is www.carsonhume.com (PS: We're so wrapped up in our plan that I think we said Tuesday (Nov 22) is the title reveal. Nope. It's Monday (Nov 21). Sorry for any confusion.)

Welcome to Halloween 2022, and we pick what we feel is the iconic horror film of the genre: Alien! We thoroughly spoil this 1979 classic that pushes back on all (well, most) of the clichés, and we explain why we feel this is mandatory viewing for writers dabbling in the horror and/or sci-fi genres. We also chat (or kvetch, if you will) about our Graphic Arts class, and we touch on Nanowrimo and our ongoing works in progress. We got around to rerecording Settings Part 2, the one where we define how a setting can overwhelm the characters in your book. We're talking about an event that obliterates the routines and comfort zones of your characters. We give thoughts on this genre, starting with highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of your characters as they are changed by the setting. Trigger Warning: we use Manzanar as an example. This week's podcast has us on the road to Lone Pine, California, home to many movie settings, some of which you've seen. We use a visit to the Museum of Western Film History and the Alabama Hills as background for a chat about Settings. They can be a challenge to writers as we try to strike a balance between adding a colorful dimension versus overwhelming the reader with details and extrapolation. We thoroughly spoil Pleasantville and Blade Runner (1982) as examples. Next week, we talk about how a setting can become the dominant tone of a book. We update listeners on our manuscript at the editors, our graphic design class, and JT's retirement ( also mentioned here ). Please visit us at carsonhume.com for pictures. TIA! LYL!

This week we chat about Robert Frost's "Road Not Taken" (apologies to Mr. Frost for mangling the quote in the podcast). With CC and I being of a certain age, we have a better perspective of our interests and skills. What careers would we have picked had we the chance to do things over again? And what were our childhood choices for jobs? We go down this path because we're engaging our imaginations and "what if's," both being essential writers' tools. Are you in your chosen career path? What would you have done different "if you knew then what you know now?" Also discussed is JT's last week with his long-time day job and our in-depth editing sessions we're having over our current work in progress. We gave ourselves an on-air (and mutual) anxiety attack in this week's podcast as we talked out our plans for the rest of the year. We didn't know how much we have going on until we turned on the microphone! The big part of the podcast was Content Editing. We got the draft back from our editors on our joint project, and we learned that we did indeed have plot holes that need smoothing over before we can return the draft for their next deep dive. We talk about how we created those holes and how we'll fix them. Another major portion was a deep dive into our Nanowrimo project we'll be doing in November. We have ideas and thoughts, and we'll be hopefully organizing them in a few weeks into a coherent draft. We talked about our ongoing Graphics Art Design class we're taking at the local college. You can see our first line-drawing exercises on our web page . We're beginners, so please be kind. The last project we touch is the Big Move where we'll be making a "partners desk" office in our house after JT retires. Yowza. See why we had an anxiety attack? We barely skimmed over the upcoming holidays if that's a clue. Have a listen and let us know what you think at our website at www.carsonhume.com TIA! LYL!

"May you live in interesting times." JT's awesome aunt says this is an ancient Chinese curse. The world has been living through them here in the 21st Century, but what does that mean for the writer who engages in historical fiction? We discuss the challenges facing authors who use real-life events in their books, including sources of information, writer's biases, and the challenge of seeing into the future. Historical fiction might be the difficult form of fiction to get right. Have a listen. Are we right or wrong? Let us know via our website at www.carsonhume.com TIA! LYL!

We always say we have a jampacked podcast and we're usually right. Today's fun started at Oh-dark-thirty when JT photographed a hot air ballon over Carson City, only to learn later that a friend and colleague was aboard. We ended up taking pictures over each other without knowing we were taking pictures of each other. We dedicated this podcast to that brave, brave soul. We take a dive into "Imposter Syndrome," loosely defined as someone who doubts their skills, talents, or accomplishments fearing being exposed as a fraud. We talk at length about how this affects independent writers and people in general, especially with traditional versus independent publishing. We also relate our personal experiences with the phenomenon, and we try to offer possible solutions. Related: what are the three hardest words for a man to say? Also discussed: our personal writing projects, retirement plans, changing our house, our Graphics Design class, Halloween decorating. Episode 81 is all about making a plan to market our book and sticking to it. We say "Marketing is Cruel" because we are not the kind of people to rush out and beg people to read our books. We talk about the baby steps we're taking to get over that hump and why we're taking those steps. We spent the first part of the podcast talking about our experience with the Van Gogh Immersive Experience , from the 3D exhibitions to the moving galleries to the virtual reality walk. We segued into a discussion into the "tortured artist" stereotype, and we agree that it is a complex and difficult subject to talk about. There was a lot of unwrap here. In a very special Saturday episode of the Amateur Hour, CC and I chat about the real-life ghosts in our lives, the people we see in random places who look like loved ones and friends who've passed away. For that millisecond before we remember they're gone, we can be hit with a ton of strong feelings, including the echoes of the love and affection for someone we don't get to see anymore. A difficult and very personal subject for a podcast, but as writers, we talk about how we can use these important moments and emotions in our books. Before that, we talk about our mutual rom-com that CC and I are drafting up together, which is a lot of fun. We hope to release it later this year. People may have trouble put words to paper (or screen) because they feel they have a weak grasp on language skills, or they're nervous about revealing themselves. We talk about the challenges and dangers of using “power words” and “trigger words” in this week’s writer’s podcast. Our definitions: “Power Words” can be used to develop an emotional connection between the reader and writer, where “Trigger Words” exist to illicit an emotional response, often a knee-jerk negative emotional response. Candidly, we struggle to draw the line between the two. We talk about both in general communication, and we use the vaccination argument as an example. For writing, we use the romantic genre in how power words can shape a writer’s manuscript. Trigger warning (ironically): we use personal examples from our upbringing and, yes, we get wound up. The one where CC and I chat about Elmore Leonard's "10 Rules for Good Writing:" 1. Never open a book with weather. 2. Avoid prologues. 3. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue. 4. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said"…he admonished gravely. 5. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose. 6. Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose." 7. Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly. 8. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters. 9. Don't go into great detail describing places and things. 10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip. My most important rule is one that sums up the 10: If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.
