'Fuelling Around' is back for a tenth series, with Jason and Dave welcoming along another all star line up of notable petrolheads! First up, it's the smoothest of the smooth, DJ Trevor Nelson, who as well as knowing a thing or two about music as the host of Radio 2's prestigious afternoon show, is also a bit of a secret car nut! His early days of motoring were reassuringly humble like the rest of us, but these days, he has something a little bit special on his drive at home, and he's delighted to have the opportunity to talk about it properly!
S9 E8 · Wed, December 18, 2024
The final episode of the series sees Jason and Dave sit down with a man who rarely sits down, comedian Russell Kane! Russell is currently half way through an epic UK tour that has already seen him play about 60 dates this year, with the same scheduled for next year, and that doesn't take into account the podcasts, the interviews and the corporate gigs that he has to try and juggle as well! Away from that though and when he does have some time to himself, cars are a passion, and in particular 1980's modern classics! He loves old Fords and the motors of his Essex upbringing that rolled off the line at Dagenham, just down the road from his mum and dad's house, but has treated himself to a 1986 vintage BMW 5 series which is his pride and joy, and something he's only too happy to talk about!

With the F1 season concluding in Abu Dhabi last weekend and the Formula E season kicking off in São Paulo at the same time, it seemed the perfect opportunity to get Ben on the podcast fresh from his travels, to give Jason and Dave his expert analysis on all of the week's goings on, plus the customary walk down memory lane in terms of his own motoring life story!

Darren Gough is one of this country's greatest ever cricketers, having represented England and his beloved Yorkshire for decades. He won Strictly Come Dancing (twice if you believe him!) in the noughties, but these days golf is his greatest passion, along with cars of course. When it comes to motors, with Darren it's normally the bigger the better! Range Rovers, Land Rovers and even the behemoth that is the Cadillac Escalade is on his hitlist, but there have been smaller toys along the way in his more formative years. These days though, as a respectable man in his mid fifties, Darren can see himself looking quietly understated and naturally sophisticated in an Aston Martin, provided he doesn't have to pay for it. So, true to form and upholding almost every Yorkshire stereotype there is, Goughie wants to blag one, as he may have mentioned 3 or 5 times to Jason and Dave!

Over the summer, Jason Plato and Dave Vitty decided they fancied doing a live version of their award winning podcast ‘Fuelling Around’, and set about finding a suitable venue. Wembley Arena was booked and the O2 was too expensive, but the lovely people at Motorsport UK, very kindly offered them the use of their headquarters in Bicester and suddenly it was game on! The Adrian Flux live events team were mobilised, the tickets sold out within hours, the boys quickly organised draught beer and a barbecue, and all they needed now were some special guests! Well, with it being only a couple of days before the BTCC weekend at Silverstone, it made sense to make it a touring car legends special, and they don’t come much bigger than Tim Harvey and Matt Neal! As long as Dave could make sure that Matt didn’t try and punch Jason again, it promised to be a decent night! This is what happened…

To bring the curtain down on the current series, Jason and Dave have saved something a little bit special until the very end! An absolute legend in British motorsport and one of the fastest men of all time on two wheels, the boys’ special guest is the one and only Carl Fogarty! From having a week off school to go the TT Races on the Isle of Man to watch his dad race as a kid, to being crowned King of The Jungle with Ant and Dec in 2014 and everything in between! It’s an absolute pleasure to have a brew and a blather with Carl Fogarty, who even after all these years, still describes himself as ‘just an ordinary lad from Blackburn!’ Fuelling Around is powered by Adrian Flux. He’s one of the all time sporting greats. A master at what he does, and in the world of snooker, he’s a world class legend! Fame and fortune came early for Ronnie, and fast cars were a predictable accessory in his early twenties. Now in his mid-forties, Ronnie is still an out and out petrolhead and absolutely loves his cars, but some notable mistakes behind the wheel in the past, have made Ronnie a much safe driver these days and a reformed man when it comes to that heavy right foot. It’s a question we ask most of our guests. What’s your money no object, two car fantasy garage? Having picked something rather exotic and containing only 2 seats, Nicki sounded shocked that she might also have to consider including something large enough to accommodate her family! Elsewhere we discuss with Nicki the only car that enables you to be both an environmentalist and a mentalist, and how on earth she managed to transition from a background with BBC wildlife in Bristol to a career in professional motorsport! To describe Chris Harris as a car expert and a passionate petrolhead would be an understatement, as the esteemed motoring journalist, racing driver and TV presenter is now living the dream hosting Top Gear alongside Paddy McGuinness and Freddie Flintoff. When he’s not travelling the world filming the world’s finest motoring show, Chris likes to collect early 90's performance cars and fill his garages with the stuff he could only drool over in his teens! At 22 he was a fairly late starter to the car club, but he’s certainly made up for it since then! The journey may have started with an Italian set of wheels, but it wasn’t an exotic beginning and there were certainly no prancing horses involved. However, as the bug took hold and budgets allowed, things got significantly more interesting on the drive of Mr Melvin Odoom, who is by his own admission, a rather under the radar petrolhead with a pretty serious addiction!

‘Fit as a butcher’s dog’ is how VBH describes herself after enduring a tough twelve months of home schooling, but with new found freedoms just around the corner, things are looking up for a lady with thoroughbred racing pedigree! She’s started her own YouTube channel so that manufacturers of automotive exotica can loan her their wares for real life road testing, and even turned her hand to banana bread to alleviate the boredom of lockdown. Having first met Jason Plato when they both worked at Silverstone as racing instructors, there’s not much that Vicki can get away with, including an unfortunate incident involving a Range Rover and some deep water at Millbrook! It’s been a bumpy old year for the hospitality business says Tom Kerridge, who’s hugely successful restaurant business has suffered catastrophic losses as a result of the pandemic. However, with things slowly opening and normality inching its way back, there’s reasons to be cheerful and reasons to be positive at what the rest of the year holds. Away from the kitchen and the business side of things, Tom is a self-confessed petrolhead, who went through a clear and defined hot hatch phase during the 90s, before maturing slightly and settling on his current 3 car garage that makes him very happy indeed. He’s been on our TV screens and airwaves for 2 decades now, and having entertained the nation in the ‘I’m a Celebrity’ castle earlier on this year, Vernon is back on prime time Saturday night telly, hosting ITVs brilliant new show ‘Game of Talents’. Away from the sharp suits though, Vernon is one of the most down to earth people you could ever wish to meet, and is an out and out car fanatic! He inherited his love of cars from his lorry driving dad Norman, and it’s taken him on to owning a brutal Noble M400 and now a Nissan GTR that he’s got tuned to a manageable 958 BHP! Vernon takes Jason and Dave on a little stroll down motoring memory lane, starting with an unfortunate incident on the day he passed his test! Fuelling Around is powered by Adrian Flux.
