Dream Job Ready Podcast - Episode 55 - Mastering the Art of Collaboration: Harvard Career Expert Claims its the No. 1 Desirable Skill That Very Few People Have — Especially Men In this episode, we recite Heidi K. Gardner's thought-provoking article, "Harvard career expert: The No. 1 ‘desirable skill’ that very few people have—especially men." Have you ever thought about the profound impact of collaboration on professional growth and why it's a highly sought-after skill in the modern workplace? "When young people ask me for career advice, I always tell them: “Don’t just focus on your own accomplishments. Be a collaborator. Through a decade of teaching and research at Harvard’s business and law schools, I discovered an important an often overlooked insight: People who figured out how to collaborate across teams gained a major competitive edge over those who did not." - Heidi K. Gardner, Ph.D. Her article (and subsequentially this podcast) explores both the advantages of collaboration skills, and how to be an exceptional collaborator. Here is a link to the CNBC.com article -> https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/14/harvard-career-expert-the-no-1-highly-desirable-skill-for-success-very-few-people-have.html?utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&fbclid=IwAR3syRuz5-MUMgeD4cl1_OHy_i9CGFpLof6z2Src2tBZH8SnMawfpYJ4kxg_aem_th_AdYpEb8a2nx9ecqq7cjPE79MJqaA-lSZesZGurlX2t_1NERyno9bpruoj6Y1T576BlU&mibextid=Zxz2cZ Thanks for tuning in! Those 3 questions are: What job advice has had the most impact on your career? What's a must-do in any job application or interview? What's one thing you wish you knew, understood and/or appreciated earlier in your career? Alliv also gets the chance to ask Dane 1 random question about something career/job related. Welcome to a Quick Take episode of the Dream Job Ready podcast! Are you feeling unsure about your career choice? Starting to feel like you're in the wrong job or wrong industry? My guest from Episode 31, Michelle Battersby, whose past roles include Country Manager at Bumble and CMO at Keep it Cleaner, admits she's had thoughts like that in the past and acted on them, and admits she expects to get them again at some point in her career down the line. In this bite size episode, I share some of Michelle's advice from her long form interview in Episode 31 . Here's the transcript: Dane Sharp (Host): Are you starting to feel like you’re in the wrong job or working in the wrong industry? You're going to want to keep listening to this episode... Hello and welcome to a Quick Take of the Dream Job Ready podcast. This 1 minute 40 second snippet comes from Episode 31, with guest, Michelle Battersby, who was then-CMO of online fitness company, Keep It Cleaner. Michelle has had a busy career with several key job and industry changes, so during the interview I asked her why, what and how she made the leap from HR roles in the finance and banking industry to being Director of Marketing for the Woman centric dating app, Bumble. Michelle gives simple and relatable advice, which helped her get the opportunity to first connect with Bumble founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd. Side note... You would have likely heard Whitney’s name mentioned plenty in the news this year after she took Bumble public on the Nasdaq in February, which made her the world’s youngest self made female billionaires at age 31. A good person to connect with! Here’s Michelle recalling how that career change went down: Michelle Battersby (Guest): I remember having this inner feeling - just this voice that kept saying to me, ‘you're way better at something else than this. There is something out there that you're meant to be doing that you're not doing’. I just had this feeling that I hadn't found the right thing yet, and then it was as soon as I began acknowledging those inner thoughts and feelings that opportunities started coming to me. I do hate giving this advice, because it sounds really, you know, “woo-woo” and it's not really theoretical or tangible, but I really do believe what you put out is what you get back, and as soon as you start looking for things and start talking to people honestly about what you're going through and the fact that you you're looking for something else and you're not sure what it is, and you're exploring other ideas, it doesn't matter if you speak to one person or 10 people, that one person or all those 10 pe

Hi, I'm Dane Sharp - host of Dream Job Ready. I'm also an excited, new starter this week, announcing I've landed a new dream job as Chief Marketing Officer at tech startup, togetherAI . I've been fortunate to work for some amazing companies (Rip Curl, Under Armour, eBay, McDonald's) and awesome people in my career, but this new endeavour is one worth sharing and celebrating. Unfortunately, youth mental health is deteriorating as children are “on device” at increasingly younger ages with an alarming correlation in increased rates of anxiety, depression, cyber-predatory and cyber-bullying. 1 in 5 young people will be socially excluded, threatened or abused online this year. 1 in 4 are at clinical risk of serious mental illness but the majority are reluctant to seek help. Families often lack the awareness, knowledge and communication skills necessary to navigate complex scenarios and build resilient mental health and wellbeing on the journey to adulthood. Over 70% of parents feel that they struggle to communicate with their children. As a new parent, these stats and the realities at large about family mental health shocked me. When I learned of togetherAI's focus and mission, I couldn't help but want to be a part of its future. I've known togetherAI Founder and CEO, Josh Wilson, for more than 6 years, working together briefly when he was starting his first business venture, StatEdge. Today, I'm happy to be working with him and a team of passionate peers to bring togetherAI to life. I invited Josh on to the show for this episode and asked him to prepare 3 reasons why his new job is a dream job. The three? Impact Alignment Team & People We discuss each in the episode. Business owner, C7 quadriplegic, author and one heck of an inspiration - Darren Longbottom (Owner of Zink Surf ) chats with Dane Sharp about life and leadership in a wheelchair | Dream Job Ready EP45 Ready to be inspired, shocked, moved and motivated in one short interview? Darren 'Daz' Longbottom was born into the surfing industry. Growing up on the beach in Cronulla, Australia, he and his brother witnessed surf industry and business success first hand via their father, who was a surfboard manufacturing pioneer in the 70s and 80s. Coming of working age, it didn’t take Daz long to forge his own identity in the surf industry and business world, eventually becoming the owner of a surf shop in Kiama on NSW's south coast. The business was successful and enabled Daz to live a happy, easy-going and casual life, but all that was rocked in a split second by a freak surfing accident in the remote region of Mentawais, North Sumatra. The freak surfing accident broke Darren's neck and resulted in instant paralysis. Alone in the water and semi-unconscious, Daz fought to stay alive until he was rescued by his friends, returned to the boat and stabilized (by getting strapped to a surfboard). But that’s just the beginning... What follows is a 25+ hour ordeal (I stress the world ordeal) returning to the mainland and reaching the safety of a hospital... You're likely trying to guess or imagine what went wrong and what happened... Think worse and times it by x 2... Today, Daz still runs his successful surf store in Kiama, but now does it from a wheelchair because of his C7 quadriplegia and spinal cord injury. His co-authored book Beyond the Break explains his unbelievable, life-or-death escape to safety in impeccable detail and reading the book inspired me to interview Darren for Dream Job Ready. For it's not simply the inspiration, motivation or advice on mindset he shares, but the importance, reliance, and motivation he put on work, his job, and on his company, even in the hardest times of his recovery. His 'dream job' really meant (and continues to mean) something to him, personally and deep, and there's a beauty in that which I hoped he would share in this interview. He does. Be present for this episode, because it's worth it. Not because Daz is a quadriplegic and in a wheelchair, but because he shares thoughtful, truthful and humble leadership and business ownership insights and advice of the likes we all need to hear before we clock in or clock out of work for the day. Please note, I visited Darren at his home in Kiama for the interview (Covid-19 safe) and we had a small sound issue with my microphone. No biggie, you'll make out and understand everyth

Dream Job Ready with Dane Sharp and Jen Heape (Co-founder and COO, Vixen Labs ) | Dream Job Ready EP44. Hello and thank you for discovering Dream Job Ready! Season 2 is here with a bang and we kick off the new series by interviewing Voice Tech expert, Jen Heape, in Episode 44. Jen is COO and co-founder of Vixen Labs - UK's leading voice consultancy and design studio. Smart Speakers, Voice Assistants and voice-centric apps (think Clubhouse) are radically changing the way we interact with technology at home, at work, and in the classroom. It's an exciting industry and one that's going to dominate the next decade. With expertise in linguistics and over a decade of experience leading creative teams, Jen heads up the voice product output of Vixen Labs. She brings intellectual and creative rigor to voice design and is passionate about how conversational technologies can affect real change in our lives, right now. With a particular interest in the psychology behind voice-based interactions, she seeks to push at the technological constraints of today to create bold new applications. Jen’s specialism lies in the pioneering field of voice strategy and voice user experience (VUX), covering all areas of conversational experience design, such as use case definition, user journey mapping, interaction design, character development, and tone of voice creation. She regularly speaks internationally on all things voice, especially around ethics and biases in conversational technologies, as well as deep dives on the innovative principles of voice design. I first met Jen back in 2009, when she freelanced with me and Rip Curl during a Rip Curl surfing event in Portugal. Jen helped me with content creation and website articles pre, during, and post-event, and I'm super proud of the career she's gone on to create. If you're looking for a new dream job or exploring new industries to call home, hit play and learn some more about Voice Tech and the opportunities that exist. On top of discussing all things voice, Jen and Dane share advice about what to do and what not to do during interviews, why networking is essential and where to invest energy in your job search. Dream Job Ready with Dane Sharp and Jason Olive (Marketing Director, Movember) | Dream Job Ready EP43. 2020 has been one for the history books, but it's been a pivotal and important year for non-profit organisation and charity, Movember. Our mental health has been pressure-tested even more than usual, with Covid-19 disrupting and impacting life as we know it. Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale, focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Across the world, men are dying six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. Movember's mission (by 2030) is to see the number of men dying prematurely reduce by 25%. Lofty goal, but so critical. Since the first moustaches were grown in 2003, Movember has raised over AUD $1 billion for men’s health, funding more than 1,250 innovative programs ranging from groundbreaking clinical tests and trials to game-changing mental health studies and programs. Jason Olive is Movember's Marketing Director and has a dream job with the organisation. After building a healthy career working in advertising agencies, he jumped to the non-profit in July 2019 and hasn't looked back. Awarded CMO 50's 'One to Watch' in 2020, Jason is proud of the work his team and the organisation at large has done this year, but knows its the diverse community of supporters that need the praise. If your dream job is working for a charity, this episode is a must listen. Jason shares great advice about how to find the right organisation and cause for you and gives a rundown of what responsibilities his role has. I also asked Jason about the impacts that Coronavirus has had to mental health this year and what trends Movember has seen. We discuss the impacts (positive and negative) of working from home, the readjustments we'll need to make again in the new year and about work-place mental health in general. If you're going through a tough time or know someone who is, remember you're not alone and there is help available. Keep a lookout for your friends, family and co-workers. If it’s your mate, dad, brother, partner who is struggling, these conversations can be tough. "Culture does not make people. People make culture." Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Dream Job Ready Quick Take episode with Dane Sharp and Fred Schebesta The importance of culture and values to business success, and the challenge leaders have to keep culture alive, with Dane Sharp and Fred Schebesta | Dream Job Ready Quick Take EP42. G'day! My name is Dane Sharp and I really implore you to hit play on this 4.56min Quick Take episode. This episode features a memorable grab that serial entrepreneur Fred Schebesta shared in my interview with him in Episode 27. Fred is a co-founder of finder.com and helped create the company's strong and passionate team culture. Throughout our interview in EP27, Fred talks to finder.com's culture and the reasons it's been so important to successful company growth… He claims it's one of the most important things - and often a point of difference, just how much emphasis and importance he and the other business leaders at Finder put on culture and the company’s values. Finder.com is a company that has grown quickly and has opportunities galore in front of it…. It’s grown from Australia to now operate in 6 countries, and given his strong views on Culture and Values, I made sure I asked Fred if (and how) he has managed and maintained that during growth… and whether it’s been easy to do. In this Quick Take episode he shares some great advice and insights about cultural differences and continuing to learn on the job too… I hope you found this Quick Take episode interesting and helpful. Dream Job Ready Quick Take episode with Dane Sharp and Danny Keens. How to manage people & big, diverse teams + plus what makes employees successful | Dream Job Ready Quick Take EP41. Hello! My name is Dane Sharp, I’m your show host and I wanted to re-share a great snippet of advice that Danny Keens shared in Episode 26. Danny has a storied career and has had dream jobs with the likes of Twitter, ESPN, Channel 9 and most recently Next VR, which was virtual reality company bought out by Apple in 2020. Danny has held multiple senior level roles, so I asked him in that interview about how he approaches managing people and developing and leading big and diverse teams… And also asked for his thoughts, as a boss, on what makes an employee great, successful and trust-worthy…. I loved the following quote (which Danny shares in this episode): "Hiring is hard.. finding a good person for a job is tough, but finding a great person is almost impossible." That’s an important opinion to consider… If you’re applying for a job or fronting up at an interview, do your prep work, be present and put your best foot forward and on show. I hope you found this Quick Take episode interesting and helpful. Got feedback? Dream Job Ready Episode 39: Noah Cohen (Professional Sales Coach, Cohen Sales Academy). Part 6 of 6 in our 'Mastering the Sales Process & Learning how to Sell with Noah Cohen' mini series. Topic for this episode: Noah rounds off his training by taking host Dane Sharp through 'Presentation & Closing', 'Post Sell' and 'Asking for Referrals'. Hello and thanks for joining me on Dream Job Ready. I'm your host, Dane Sharp, and I'm excited to bring you the finale of a special 6-part mini-series with professional sales coach, Noah Cohen, where we dive into and break down the sales process. We've received some amazing feedback about the previous 5 episodes with Noah, so if you're just discovering this show or missed episodes 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38, please go back and give them a listen. Noah has turned his sales training into a condensed and generalised take for our listening benefit. He's also provided some scripts, tip and communication templates here: Topic: Presentation & Close. Tip for Episode: At any point before this stage, if you can not proceed further, you are not to pitch or present. You must address their enquiry or concern and solve it before moving forward to the next step. "[Name], Earlier you told me X was important to you. You also say the steps you've taken to fix it and the impact it has had on you. Have I missed something? (If positive) share how your solution fixes their issue or provides to them what they need and ask when you can get started and close. Topic: Post-sell and referral. Tip for Episode: Deal with buyers' remorse. "[Name], you mentioned that you wanted x but then after discussing it you were happy with what I suggested, Are you still ok to proceed?" This will allow the prospect to own their decision and reduce the chances of a cancelled sale, later. Tip for Episode: How to ask for a referral: "[Name], next time you talk to a friend, college family member or even a neighbour and they mention they need (product or service), would you feel comfortable introducing us?" Yes, sure... "Great, when that happens please take out your phone and text me their name and number, and I will get in touch. Is that ok?" No... "Not a problem at all [name], what do I need to do for you to feel comfortable?" Here's the agenda for our six episodes: Introducing the Sales Process & Training (EP34) Rapport & Trust (EP35) Setting an Agenda (EP36) Discovery Funnel, Needs Analysis & Questioning (EP37) Uncovering a Prospect's Budget & Understanding their Decision Making Process (EP38) Closing the Sale / Getting a Decision / After the Sale (this one!) I'm your host, Dane Sharp, and I'm excited to bring you a special 6-part mini series with Noah Cohen (Professional Sales Coach), where we dive into and break down the sales process. In this episode, we discuss why you need common ground, an agreement and an agenda at the start of every sale. Noah frames up every sell with the question "what are you trying to achieve"? The answer to this question should then inform the steps you take to hep ensure the person or business you're dealing with understands your goals and hopefully supports them. Great value throughout this episode and a few helpful training tips from Cohen Training Institute: From Noah: Cover these four points to uncover any unforeseen issues or hurdles and address immediately: Agree on Purpose: "[name], the reason we are here today is X... Did I get that right?" Time: "[name], I know we said we will have an hour today, is that still ok?" Agenda (what both Parties want to cover): "In order to make this conversation as effective as possible, Is there anything you want to make sure I cover today? When I speak to CEOs like yourself they usually want to know who we are, if we've worked in your space and if we do move forward, how we go about doing the work. But everyone's different. Is there anything that's important to you? [acknowledge] "and here are a few things I want to cover x,y,z, is that ok with you?" Outcome (What do you like to achieve by the end of your time) "[Name], after we go back and forth typically I find that one of two things will happen: we could determine based on your situation and what we do; this is not a fit and I think either of us should feel comfortable saying that. on the other hand we could determine that it's certainly worth looking into the next step." Hello and thanks for tuning in to Dream Job Ready! In this episode I chat with Noah again to explore and discuss the importance of building rapport and trust early within your sales process. Here's a training tip from Cohen Training Institute: Script: " Hi, What can I get you information on? " From Noah: "Get to the point as soon as you can. Rapport is creating a sense of commonality. Forming and managing work partnerships will likely be one of the most critical parts of your career. No matter the industry, it's probable that you, your team and your business will need to collaborate with another party at some point and for some business critical reason. I've put this Quick Take episode together to share some insights and advice about the importance of prioritising a mutually beneficial and 2-way relationship when you’re crafting partnerships. I’ve selected audio from my interviews with marketing experts Blandine Jean Paul and Neil Ridgway, from episodes number 24 and number 2 respectively, and I think their advice really emphasis the importance of working collectively with your desired partner to get the best outcome for both your business and theirs. It’s easy to get caught up in what you want and what you need, but we all know that the best relationships are built on collaboration, and built with understanding, trust and respect. Thanks for giving up your time to listen to Dream Job Ready and we hope you get plenty of value from this episode. Dream Job Ready Episode 31: Michelle Battersby (Chief Marketing Officer, Keep it Cleaner). After completing her Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations, Michelle worked through multiple HR roles for finance companies Citi, UBS and PWC in her first 3 years out of university. While she enjoyed the roles and the companies she was working with, she knew there was something else out there that she'd be better at... Michelle opened herself to a career move and thanks to a friend got an intro to Whitney Wolfe Herd - Founder and CEO of dating app, Bumble. The two met, connected and Michelle was hired as Country Lead, the first person hired at Bumble in Australia. There she was responsible for building out the local team, localising messaging, brand direction and officially launching Bumble into the Australian market. She progressed internally and promoted to Director of APAC Marketing in 2019, where she helped launch the business in New Zealand, Philippines and Hong Kong. Three years into the role, Michelle got that "what's next?" feeling again though and decided to seek out a position a little closer to her original love (sport), with that opportunity coming with Keep it Cleaner - the online fitness platform and brainchild of models Steph Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw. Just over a year into the role, she's loving the opportunity of learning from founders and working on new projects, such as a new app build. Dream Job Ready Episode 30: Tahnee Donkin (National Personal Training Manager, Fitness First Australia). Covid-19 has rocked the fitness industry and unfortunately closed gyms and put many people out of work... It's also changed how people work and professionals like Tahnee have had to help steer their organisations, teams and clients through dramatic change in a super short time. This included leaning into digital harder than ever before, which in my opinion will only be a good thing for the industry at large moving forward. I really enjoyed this episode with Tahnee, who shares some great advice about working life in the fitness industry, making career progressive moves, overcoming gender hurdles, taking on risks, learning and taking on challenges head first. It's always refreshing to chat with some who's driven and takes ownership of their own development. Plenty to learn from her experiences! She also praises her dedication to extracurricular studies and course work throughout her career, positioning her equally or above others in the industry with uni degrees. Fitness First is a huge organisation and Tahnee helps train and develop a wide variety of professionals across the business. She explains her career trajectory wasn't exactly planned, but you'll get a feel for her passion and dedication at work from the moment the episode starts. Tahnee talks to a few key growth moments during the episode, and acknowledges Dale Carnegie’s famed book, How to Win Friends & Influence People , as a key influencer in her career development. Dream Job Ready Episode 29: Aden Hepburn (CEO at Akcelo). Thinking about starting your own advertising or creative agency? Wondering how to get a start or move up the ranks in the team you're in? Digital and marketing expert Aden Hepburn has worked his way through several agency dream jobs, including Managing Director and CEO roles at VMLL&R, one of Australia's most progressive and successful companies. He flipped his world upside down though recently and took on a new dream job - this time building up his own agency with a group of mates and peers. Stealing their blurb from LinkedIn: "Akcelo delivers powerful brand experiences that people love, fuding creativity with experience design to solve business problems and generate white-space opportunities for some of the world's most famous brands and businesses". Aden's had the chance to work with clients such as Netflix, Google, Optus and McDonald's (where I first met him), so his experience, resume and host of accolades (Cannes Lions, FWA's, OneShow, Spikes Asia, AWARD Awards, New York Festivals, LIA's, SXSW Interactive, ANDY's, CLIO's, The Webby's) stand tall. In this episode I ask Aden about the secrets to success in his industry. We discuss the what and why that impresses business leaders like him, as well as what it takes to be a leader within a collaborative high performance team. We talk about the impacts of Covid, balancing an at home/at office culture split and the adjustments he's had to make. We also talk about what it takes to start and build an agency (and how crazy it is to do it in the middle of a pandemic). I really enjoyed this interview and I hope you get some helpful nuggets of advice from it. Dream Job Ready Episode 27: Fred Schebesta (Founder of finder.com, entrepreneur, writer, digital expert & mentor). "You don't become a sailor in smooth seas," remarks Fred, while he's discussing the importance of being adaptive and accepting of change, challenges and growth. This Aussie entrepreneur is constantly in the spotlight and media, discussing digital, finance and the future of commerce, but he's also helped build an amazing work culture at Finder and helped foster many great careers within his teams. That's what this podcast episode is about, as we dive in to what makes someone successful in their job search, career and work-life. Fred's entrepreneurial journey started at just 22. Together with his business partner and school friend Frank Restuccia, they created Freestyle Media while studying at university. In 2009, they launched finder.com in Australia, which exploded into the comparison market – one of the most competitive internet categories. Today, he prides himself on building teams of incredible people, creating cool ventures, disrupting stale ideas, enabling change and empowering improvement. He strongly values growth and learning, and like much of his work, wanted to join me on Dream Job Ready to help others by passing on some wisdom he's picked up along the way. Want to work for Finder? They publicise that they "are always on the lookout for great people, please check out our career pages", so I ask Fred about that and he shares how to best position yourself for a role there. It's a great story, but it's also supported by hard work, focus and passion, which Danny talks about plenty in the episode. Danny started his career in Australia with the Nine Network after completing a Bachelor of Arts at Charles Sturt University. He left Nine for ESPN and then eventually left TV for Technology, landing a dream job at Twitter in New York in 2014 (Head of Sports Partnerships). "At the time, no I didn’t think twice about it. It felt right. It felt like the right move at the right time. The right group of people, the right industry to be in, the right challenge. But in reflection, I don’t know where I found the courage to do it, because now as we talk about it I look back and most people would say I’m crazy but I’m so thankful I did it because it’s been a really great journey." As well as taking advice from Danny's career journey, I ask him plenty in the interview about getting work, making the right job changes and being a great employee. "The best employees are the ones that have a can-do attitude and get the job done. I like to surround myself with people who don’t just tell you about the problem, they tell you how they’re going to solve the problem." This is a 5 minute Quick Take episode that highlights a great piece of advice shared by Scott Randall (Oakley) in Episode 18 of Dream Job Ready. (If you haven't listened to Scott's interview, go check it out!). Scott has worked with Oakley for over 16 years and is currently the brand's Director of Global Category Strategy for Oakley Sunglasses. He's also worked with Nike in the past, so his interview in Episode 18 has a lot of great insights and tips about getting dream jobs for big, famous, sports retail brands. For this Quick Take, I share Scott’s answer to the Listener Question of the Week, which was submitted by listener, Simon, who works in the retail industry. Simon’s question to Scott was “What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from each of the big brands you’ve worked for…? There's gold in his answer, as Scott talks about the value of organisational culture in the workplace, feeling fulfilled when working with like-minded people, accepting challenges, navigating and embracing change, and being comfortable with being uncomfortable. He also reveals why situational awareness is a pillar of success and why accountability is key. Thanks for listening, rating, subscribing and sharing Dream Job Ready. Dream Job Ready Episode 24: Blandine Jean-Paul (Owner of B’Dynmanic Marketing Agency). "Never look at an opportunity sideways. It could be your gateway to something else." That's the golden answer Blandine gave me when I asked her for advice for the next generation chasing dream jobs with the types of companies (ESPN, Diageo, Heineken, Hasbro & New York Knicks) she's worked with. Write that down! Blandine and I first connected when she was working with ESPN and I was working with Rip Curl. She held Senior Director roles there for over 7 years and managed projects such as the ESPY Awards, MMA and Boxing, the New York City Marathon and Major League Baseball. Prior to ESPN she worked with the New York Knicks basketball organisation, Golden Books and TV Guide. Post ESPN she has had dream jobs with Diageo, Heineken, Hasbro and SmileDirectClub, before going out on her own and launching B’Dynmanic Marketing Agency in 2019. "You might find yourself getting to a dream job by zig zagging, not via a straight line. Dream jobs are not built on straight lines." More valuable advice and a precursor to the bulk of our discussion in this episode. We cover many of great topics, including how to successfully manage client relationships, how to be part of a great team, how to manage work and travel, job preparation advice, listening, defining motivation, working for underdog companies and why being happy is the most important thing in the world. Diverse but crucial! You'll enjoy this episode... Dream Job Ready Episode 23: Alita Harvey-Rodriguez (Managing Director, MI Academy) and Natalie Khoury (Director of CX, MI Academy). Do you work in retail or dream to be a brand leader in the retail industry? As a customised training provider, 'MI Academy' helps retailers transform their skill-sets in customer experience (CX), marketing approach and sales impact. Their goal is to encourage businesses and their staff to think, creatively. I met Alita and Natalie via their innovative 'MI Academy Retail Hack Games' event held in June 2020. That event asked a stack of questions about the future of retail, but one of the key topics we discussed was the future of the retail workforce. With the increase use and application of artificial intelligence, automation and robotics, there is an obvious concern about jobs and employees being replaced, and plenty of questions about how that will be handled. I asked Alita and Nat for their opinions on this, and we discussed our thoughts on what it means to both the employer and employees. Business wise, we cover plenty in this 25min chat. The girls share some awesome advice about company training, closed-loop strategies, collaboration and design thinking. On the personal side, Alita and Nat talk about the importance of emotional intelligence and unconscious bias, and share insights about how they "slow down to speed up", a slogan that is one of MI Academy's values. I really hope you pick up something from this episode... What is the one habit that makes you successful? I asked Dr Sameer Dixit (Scientist & Director of Research at Center for Molecular Dynamics Nepal) this question in Episode 08 and answer is a powerful one: Challenge Everything. I included Dr Dixit's soundbite in this Quick Take episode, because I think it's such a great mindset to have. Transcript: Host: "What is the one habit that makes you successful?" Sameer: "I challenge everything. I challenge everything that I read. I challenge everything that I hear. I challenge everything that's in the news. I even challenge things I read in peer reviews, whether it's on nature or science. I challenge, not just to contradict what the authors are saying or the people are saying, but just to give me something to look at, some angles that people may have missed completely. And that seems to help me find new research topics and to find new avenues to look at the same issue from a different perspective altogether. As a scientist, you must challenge everything you get and everything you read, even if it comes in journals or nature or science or wherever you work, and I do that all the time." Host: "I love that! Challenge... I think that's universal. It doesn't matter what role you're in, I think that's a great habit and a great mindset." Thanks for listening, rating, subscribing and sharing Dream Job Ready. "How do I get a mentor?" "What's the benefit of having mentors? You're not alone if you've asked these questions... Many people say that having mentors is one of the most important keys to career success, but most people don't know how to approach mentoring or where to find these key relationships. Learning from someone older, wiser and more experienced is an invaluable life opportunity, whether you've just started your first job or you're halfway through your career. "How do I stand out when I’m applying for a job?" It's a common question, but there's never been a more important time to ask it and listen for answers. Unemployment is at an all-time high and the job market is super competitive, so you'll probably need to do more than just submit a resume and cover letter to a job ad to land that dream job you’re chasing. Our first 'Quick Take' episode references advice Carolyn Breeze (General Manager of GoCardless) shared in Episode 03. She’s a big advocate of the “show me, don’t tell me” approach and has hired people that make an impact during the application process. Dream Job Ready Episode 06: Benjamen McGrath (Job Seeker, ex Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox) I worked with Ben at Rip Curl around 10 years ago and he’s also had dream jobs with Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox and in the advertising agency scene. Benny is currently unemployed and job seeking though, after recently being made redundant due to a company takeover, so I interviewed him to find out just how someone prepares and deals with that setback when they’re chasing a dream job. The timing of this interview couldn’t have been more coincidently relevant. The COVID-19 crisis has rocked small and large business, and has led to millions of lost jobs all over the world. This interview took place in February, so we weren’t aware of Coronavirus at that point and hence we don’t discuss it in the interview. We do however talk plenty about dealing with job loss, managing redundancy, recruiters and staying ready for the next opportunity that presents itself. Dream Job Ready Episode 02: Neil Ridgway (Chief Brand & Marketing Officer, Rip Curl) Call me sentimental, but I couldn't think of anyone better to be Guest #1 on Dream Job Ready. I have known Neil for over 20 years and owe several of my dream jobs to him and his mentorship. Neil spent 10 years working in magazines and media, editing and publishing titles such as Tracks Magazine, FHM Australia, New Woman and Smash Hits in their heyday. He eventually left media to take a dream job at Rip Curl, in 2003, and has now been with the surfing company, steering the brand's marketing agenda, for over 17 years... We cover plenty in this interview. We discuss Neil’s role at Rip Curl and what it takes to get a job and be successful with the brand. We talk about the importance of saying Yes to opportunities… and then building up the type of experience and cred that allows you to knock back some in the future.
