In this episode, I share how one brand, Rode, earned podcasters' respect not with hype but by building tools that felt like they were made for us . It's part tribute, part quiet callout, and a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful gear isn't what you buy. It's what you build around.

The African podcasting space just took another hit. Spotify deleted The Young God Podcast without warning, erasing years of work, conversations, and connections just like that. No explanation, no appeal, just another independent voice silenced by a faceless algorithm. This episode of Into The Podverse: The Indie African Edition isn't just about Rodney. It's about every African podcaster fighting for visibility in a system that sees us as nothing more than data points. Platforms like Spotify move the goalposts, shadowban content, and erase entire catalogues while we play by the rules. But resilience is in our DNA. We're not just reacting, we're building alternatives. Independent hosting platforms like Jam It are amplifying our voices instead of stifling them. The future of African podcasting isn't in begging for a seat at their table. It's in creating our own.

This week on the show, I comment on Daniel Orjikalu 's groundbreaking dissertation on the use of podcasts as an academic tool. Then, I review Podcast Movement 2023 from various lenses, highlighting its key takeaways and the evolving landscape of podcasting. I also discover and share useful lessons from the "Strike Force Five", a collaboration among otherwise competing late-night TV hosts. Spotify's recent decision to limit support for "white-noise" podcasters and its implications for the industry, caught my attention too and I share thoughts on it. And then, I embark on a journey through the evolution of audio-on-demand, tracing a path from vinyl records to RSS Feeds. Tune in for an episode filled with insights, innovation, and the magic of audio storytelling in the Podverse. Welcome aboard! In this episode of "Into The Podverse," host Tony Doe chats with Alex Hobby, the creator of the podcast "Time for Your Hobby," to explore the inspiration behind starting the podcast and celebrating diverse leisure time activities. Alex shares how his background in music and audio production led him to venture into podcasting, creating a safe space for people to share their passions and hobbies without judgment. "Hobbies have such a powerful impact on people's lives. It builds character, personality, and maintains sanity. Taking time for yourself and enjoying something you love is essential." The discussion delves into how Alex finds and selects unique and interesting guests from around the world to feature on his show. He shares his unconventional approach of inviting anyone who is passionate about their hobby, focusing on genuine curiosity and connection rather than an individual's status or following. "I'm not the type of individual where I say, oh, well, how many listeners do you have? How many followers do you have? What do you accomplish in life? Who are you? I said, hey, you have a hobby, you're passionate about it. Cool. Let's talk." When it comes to production techniques and equipment, Alex admits he is not a technical expert but loves learning about audio-related activities. He reveals his choice of software, Audacity and Adobe Audition, and his preferred microphone, the Shure MV7 . He emphasizes that it's not about having the most expensive equipment but how you use it to create high-quality audio. "You can have the most expensive thing or use the most shiny, bright thing. That's out right now. But if you don't know how to use it, it's worthless. And even then, some people who use very simplistic tools or programs/software are actually incredible at it." Tony and Alex discuss the challenges and tactics for growing a podcast audience. Alex believes in staying true to his passion for diverse hobbies rather than following popular trends. He shares his experience of preparing ahead by recording episodes in bulk, enabling him to balance podcasting with other hobbies and family time. "So my method is a little faux pas in the sense that people don't usually recommend it in the community. Like, you got to prepare, you got to prepare. I kind of do a balance of both... I enjoy not knowing much about my guests when interviewing them, because that allows me within the show to feel like, okay, I'm actually curious." As a podcaster based in Africa, Tony seeks Alex's perspective on unique opportunities and challenges for African podcasters. Alex encourages aspiring African podcasters to embrace their own culture, diversity, and local heroes while promoting different perspectives and taking risks to stand out. "Find what is important to you and elaborate on that

In this episode of "Into The Podverse," Tony Doe interviews Gathoni Ngumba , the community manager for Afripods . Gathoni sheds light on the unique challenges and opportunities faced in fostering a podcasting community in Africa. Gathoni highlights two main challenges in creating a podcasting community in Africa: education and reach. Many aspiring podcasters lack access to information on how to start or grow their podcasts, requiring a significant amount of teaching and guidance. Additionally, reaching podcasters across different countries poses a challenge. Even after hosting virtual events and providing information on social media, new podcasters from countries already covered often request further engagement. Overcoming these challenges is essential to ensure all podcasters in Africa can access the necessary information and interact with their peers. However, Gathoni also emphasizes the endless opportunities that come with building a podcasting community in Africa. By educating aspiring podcasters, the community can expand, enabling a greater variety of stories to be told. This, in turn, allows for the continuous growth of the podcasting cycle, as more individuals can educate and inspire the next generation of podcasters. With a wealth of untold stories from Africa, Gathoni remains optimistic about the potential for representation and diversity within the podcasting landscape. To ensure African voices and perspectives are well represented, Afripods recognizes the diversity of the continent. Different languages, cultures, and traditions need to be respected and included. Afripods aims to find the common ground or heart that connects podcasters from various African countries while celebrating their unique identities.
