Send us a text Imagine losing every photo, document, and file you own in an instant. It happens more often than you think—and usually to people who believed it could never happen to them. The 3-2-1 backup rule is your insurance policy against digital disasters, and it's surprisingly simple: 3 : Keep three copies of your data. This includes the original data plus two backup copies. 2 : Use two different types of media for these backups. For example, one could be on an external hard drive, and the other on a cloud storage service or a different type of physical medium like tape. This reduces the risk of data loss due to media failure. 1 : Maintain one copy off-site . This ensures that in case of disasters like fires, floods, or theft at your primary location, you still have access to your data. Cloud storage often serves this purpose, but physical off-site storage like a safe deposit box can also be used. Subscribe to the weekly tech newsletter at https://gregdoig.com

Send us a text There are a few ways to protect a mobile phone from hackers. One is to use a strong password to unlock the phone. The use of face id on mobile devices is a form of biometric authentication. This system is more secure than traditional passwords because it is much harder to steal someone's identity than it is to guess their password. Additionally, many mobile devices now have face id enabled by default, which makes it easier for users to log in quickly and easily. Another is to install security software that will help protect the phone from being hacked. Additionally, it's important to be aware of what apps you're installing on your phone and whether they are reputable. Finally, it's also a good idea to back up your phone's data regularly in case it is hacked or lost. Subscribe to the weekly tech newsletter at https://gregdoig.com

Send us a text Machine sentience is the capacity of machines to experience or feel things. Some people argue that devices can be said to be sentient if they can engage in complex communication, problem-solving, and learning. Others say that machine sentience requires more, such as the ability to have emotions or feel pain. Unfortunately, there is no agreed-upon definition of machine sentience, and scientists and philosophers are still debating the issue. Send us a text If you’re deciding between a laser printer or an inkjet printer then here are some brief tips. Laser printers may cost slightly more on average but are the better choice for most people due to their low cost per page, particularly if you print mostly in black and white and at higher volumes . However, if you’re a photographer or looking for a printer to give you photolike, color-rich prints, you don’t print much (also remember that the ink cartridge will dry up if you don’t use it enough), you want to print on unusual paper/material, or simply don’t have the space for a laser printer, an inkjet is a way to go. Buying online requires you to read through the specifications to ensure the printer is compatible with the computer you have and also its networking capabilities via wired or wi-fi. Buying in-store gives you better look at the quality of prints before buying. Learn More at my website https://gregdoig.com Subscribe to the weekly tech newsletter at https://gregdoig.com

The story comes from Chris Ducker at Zd net this was written on September 13, Whatsapp announced that it will be offering its users end to end encrypted backups later this year, users will have a choice for how the encryption key used is stored. The simplest is for users to keep a record of the random 64 digit key themselves. This is akin to how signal handles backups, which they would need to reenter to restore a backup. The alternative would be for the random key to be stored in WhatsApp infrastructure dubbed as hardware security module based backup Key Vault that would be accessible via a user created password. The backups would store message text, as well as photos and videos received WhatsApp set. The backups themselves are generated on the client as data files which are encrypted using symmetric encryption with the locally generated key according to WhatsApp. After a backup is encrypted.
