Vehicles today are safety machines on wheels so what is your shop doing to make sure you are keeping those vehicles that come to you after a collision are being restored so they operate exactly like they would if they never would have gotten into an accident. We need to start taking on the responsibility of this to create a sustainable future in our industry! No more are the days of just checking fit and finish! Michael challenges shops to: 1 – establish your why 2 – create processes that are non-negotiable (consistency) 3 – have extensive documentation (documentation before, during and after the repair including manufacturer repair procedures, videos, photos, notes, etc.) 4 – create quality control check points throughout your shop (ask your team where those QC checks should be. Today we are talking with Laura Tierney from ShopLoaner.com and discussing something that is gaining a lot of momentum in our industry – vehicle loaners in your shop. This doesn’t mean that you have to give out free loaners to people. This means another revenue stream for you. It means that you could provide a value to your guests by having a vehicle on site or even providing a vehicle for less money per day to customers who don’t have rental coverage. It also allows you to really provide for that guest at another level. Does a replacement vehicle cause you to have storage issues? How many would you want to have for your shop? Where would you get these vehicles? Would this break the bank trying to insure these vehicles? What happens if a customer gets into a wreck in your loaner? Collision repair centers may hear of cyber crimes but think it won't happen to them. Yet, it could and it does! We talk to Mark Riddell who spoke at a collision conference "across the pond" and shares with us some key takeaways from that conference. Cyber crimes are not typically a hack into your system. Burl was part of a panel at the Texas Auto Body Trade Show talking about legislation in our industry. Burl Richards is the owner of Burl's Collision Center in Henderson, Texas and he is fighting for consumer's rights and safety...and I LOVE IT! Listen in as we talk about how he fights for consumer safety. The fight Burl recently won was based off: Do you believe a repair plan is necessary? In his district court there were 12 jurors and a judge that decided a blueprint repair was necessary and warranted! At the trade show he and his panel talked about different aspects of legislation plus the RTA and how it covers a lot of aspects for OEM procedures, processes and rates. The takeaways Burl would like for people to have in class today would be: keep supporting auto body associations when it comes to phone calls, emails, money, and time. Today we are talking with Raven Hartkopf, the lead collision instructor at Collin College in Texas. She received her associates degree in auto body and now, as a graduate student, she's working on a field problem where she is diving in to what the issue is between students and the auto body shops. The big takeaway she found is students are wanting shops to work around their school schedule. If the student starts part-time once they are free and done with school they typically stay with that shop and go full time - yet most shops don't offer a part time position! She has also found there's a disconnect between women who want to do more manual labor feeling uncomfortable going in to a shop. This is a great opportunity for shops to step in to this supportive role! Another big point is for shops looking to hire someone out of a technical/trade school. Mister Jake Rodenroth came to hang out with us today on Body Bangin’! As the Operations Manager for the Collision Centers in North America for Lucid and a lifetime in the automotive and collision industry he knows a thing or two. Lucid’s have the longest range (520 miles) and the fastest charging of any of the EVs on the market! One thing I really like is that they aren’t fully touch screen. They have dials and knobs which I miss on some of the other EVs. Did you know that EVs are QUICK off the line? Lucid’s have 820 – 1K horsepower! FUNNN! When looking for a shop to be certified on their program they are looking first and foremost at culture. Are you educating your guests and talking to them at the beginning of the repair? Frank Phillips, the collision repair program manager of Rivian and veteran of the collision industry, speaks with us about the Rivian vehicles and how their collision program works which is very impressive! They simplified the collision repair program with 4 levels and the support sounds awesome! One shop is not expected to do and be everything. What a concept! They do have some parts that are restricted to only certified shops. Rivian has 3 products: SUV (R1S), pick-up truck (R1T) and the Amazon Delivery Van (EDV) with 30k units on the road today. In 2023 Rivian anticipates they'll get out an additional 50k units on the road so be on the lookout!!! Some things he shares: They have verification processes in place so the next person in the process is responsible for signing off on the previous process. John always has great input and today he's talking about charging for the proper labor rates with proper labor times. What's the difference? Labor types depict the labor rates! Why do we not talk about that more often? Most shops are using body and refinish as a labor type and we need to identify the skills the techs are using to perform the repairs. This is beyond "structural" and "non-structural". Shops are currently paying out more than they are receiving due to this labor type and rate! John recommends starting with your accountant and figure out what it costs to have an employee and you can go from there. Jerald Stiele is an owner of 3 body shops in Minnesota - two Collision Center 1 shops & Hopkins Auto Body 1. They have 8 OEM Certifications/Recommendations and are a DRP for a couple of insurance companies AND he says it's possible to do so WHILE repairing the vehicle properly (according to OE recommendations). He is frustrated by the generalization that shops can't be a DRP shop AND fix cars properly. How is that possible? Listen in as he shares how they handle their DRP relationships. As a shop owner of Best Body Shop in Wichita, Texas, Clay Hoberecht is running his shop unlike most shops out there and having great success! I'm seeing a lot of talk on the social media chat boards talking about shops adding a surcharge on top of credit card transactions. So, basically, if you run your guest's credit card they automatically pay x dollars on top of that charge to offset the fees you get charged as the shop owner. Greg Lobsiger is a body shop owner out in Indiana at Loren's Body Shop where he does about $300k/mo which is about 3.5 cars/day or 65 cars/month. He says "It's not about creating dollars. I want to take money home. I work very hard. I want my technicians to make very good money. Without question, I want to take care of those people. I better make stinkin' good money and that is what it comes down to." But how do you know if you are profitable in your shop? Greg gives us some great takeaways and is a fantastic resource to help figure out what our numbers should look like and how to do the calculations to see if you are profitable. Technician Cost Equation: For 4 months you take the total technicians average cost per week (gross pay) then divide by the billed hours average per week. This gives you the cost per billed hour. Where you want to be... Don't you wish you could get done in 1 day what would have taken you 1 week? I do! And, we can! At the end of the day - Chris shares with us that all responsibility for our life - is our own - and we can change it to become the Lamborghini that's living inside of us! Here's a great way Chris explains this: Your reality is the end result of a system. Any system can be hacked and optimized if we understand the system well enough. So, everything that is happening in our world today is a result of actions we took. Actions are driven by feelings. Feelings are how we experience our thoughts. Our thoughts come from our root code or our belief system. The key here is that our results are pre-designed to validate our belief system which becomes a feedback loop that keeps going around and around. If we can interrupt the process and bring conscious awareness to it - you can hack it, recode it and produce an entire new life! We are all quick to complain about the lack of talent in our industry but where does most of that new talent come from? SCHOOLS! Why are we forgetting about these schools and instructors who are educating and training the up-and-comers to an industry that desperately needs them? Most of these schools and programs are severely underfunded and can't afford to provide the tools, supplies, safety equipment, etc they so desperately need. So many of us feel like the only way to increase sales is to market yourself or be pushy and "get those keys". As auto collision centers, we need all the help we can get with ADAS and calibrations. Frank Terlep is our industries personal, human disruptor. He has identified the problems shops are having with ADAS and calibrations and have developed 3 different software tools to make things very easy for us while making sure these components are performed safely for the customer.
