Send us a Text Message. Brian Aquart sits down with Joy White, a multifaceted powerhouse balancing law, coaching, filmmaking and mental health advocacy. The heart of our discussion centers around Joy's experience at the frontlines of the pandemic, managing her role as General Counsel at Morehouse College. The pandemic did not spare higher education; her leadership was tested as ever-changing CDC guidelines influenced decisions that put students' safety first while grappling with financial dynamics and maintaining an enriching college experience. The rapid implementation of online education, refunds, and more highlighted an intense season for Joy and the team at Morehouse. The shift to working from home, amid the global situation, birthed in her an awareness that her lifestyle was far from sustainable. Strains of stress started to manifest physically, leading to the crucial decision - she needed to prioritize her well-being and left her full-time role at Morehouse. Joys vision for her future impact focusses on creating a nurturing community for women who dont fit into conventional spaces. She hopes to lead them to live a fully integrated life, inspiring women across generations to honor their whole selves and explore different paths. She is currently pouring her faith and wisdom into her recently relaunched law firm and her new venture Flawed Masterpiece - a platform for empowering black women to live satisfying lives without sacrificing their health and well-being, embodying a message close to Joy's heart - self-care comes before career. This empowering conversation reiterates to all our listeners: honor your health, follow your inner compass, and never sacrifice your well-being in the pursuit of success. Send us a Text Message. Brian Aquart sits down with Yasmeen Hassan, an Emmy award-winning news anchor and co-founder of HCue Consulting, to discuss her decision to leave the media industry after 15 years. Yasmeen shares her journey from Cairo, Egypt to the United States and her experiences working in media, both behind the scenes and as an on-air anchor. Despite the glamour and excitement of being involved in major events and telling people's stories, Yasmeen found herself longing for more fulfillment in her professional life. Yasmeen's story begins with the sacrifices she made throughout her career, constantly moving to new cities and leaving behind friends, family, and important life events. She reached a point where the grind of the news industry, combined with the isolation of the pandemic, took a toll on her happiness. Anchoring from home during COVID-19 made her realize the impact of being alone and missing out on personal connections. Send us a Text Message. Brian Aquart sits down with Todd Quinones, a passionate former TV news anchor who has transitioned to a new chapter in his life. Todd shares his inspiring journey, highlighting the importance of giving a voice to underrepresented individuals and finding fulfillment in propelling others toward success. Throughout his career, Todd dedicated himself to broadcast journalism and storytelling. He enjoyed being in the spotlight and sharing stories that mattered. However, as time went on, Todd's priorities shifted, and he realized that his true calling was in helping others succeed rather than seeking personal fame. Working from home presented a silver lining for Todd as well. He had the opportunity to observe conversations between his wife and son, unveiling a whole new world that he had been missing out on. This realization sparked a deep reflection on his current situation and the desire for a more fulfilling and balanced life. The pandemic served as a wake-up call for Todd, forcing him to pause and reevaluate his priorities. It provided him with a much-needed perspective on life, which was often overshadowed by the fast-paced nature of news reporting. He feared regretting not spending enough time with his loved ones in the future, rather than regretting work-related achievements. Todd shares advice for those who are contemplating a career change after spending a significant amount of time in one industry. He encourages individuals to shift their mentality and consider opportunities beyond what is familiar and comfortable. Running towards something, rather than running away from something, can lead to a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life. This is also a milestone episode for Why I Left, as it marks the 50th episode of the show. Enjoy and thank you for your continued support! Send us a Text Message. Brian Aquart welcomes Melina Cordero, Founder of Melina Cordero Consulting, who shares her journey of leaving the corporate real estate and building her own platform. Melina offers valuable advice for those contemplating leaving their jobs. Firstly, she recommends connecting with people who have successfully quit their jobs and listening to their stories, which can inspire others to realize that change is possible. Secondly, she emphasizes the importance of rest and finding fulfillment as the antidote to burnout. Making time for activities that bring happiness and joy is vital in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Melina introduces the concept of "joy dots," small moments of joy throughout the day that can significantly increase overall happiness. During the episode, Melina delves into her experiences with diversity initiatives within the workplace. She shares her frustration with being assigned to various diversity committees and responsibilities, including finding candidates for awards and contributing to diversity efforts. As a woman of color, she highlights the false assumption that women and people of color automatically qualify for diversity work, often resulting in unpaid extra responsibilities that can hinder career progress. Melina's experiences resonate with many women, who share similar dissatisfaction with the workplace and the status quo. The Women in the Workplace study confirms that progress regarding gender and race diversity has been slow and inadequate. The report suggests that employees from underrepresented groups are feeling empowered to exercise their options and break ties with organizations that fail to prioritize diversity and inclusion. The episode highlights the evolving labor market and economy, which provide individuals with more choices, making it crucial for companies to adapt and not continue with business as usual. Whether you're contemplating leaving your job, navigating diversity initiatives, or seeking inspiration for positive change, this episode offers valuable insights from an accomplished professional who took the leap and never looked back. Send us a Text Message. Brian Aquart sits with Matt Doan, a former management consultant who found the courage to leave the corporate cage and unlock a life of freedom, purpose, and personal growth. In this thought-provoking episode of Why I Left, Matt shares his insights on how he reinvented himself, uncaged his potential, and now helps others transform their lives. Although management consulting can be a rewarding and lucrative field that offers a range of valuable skills, Matt realized that he needed something more fulfilling and freeing. He made the bold decision to turn the tables and make the corporate environment work for him, rather than the other way around. Matt shares how he took measures to control his time and energy, focusing on delivering targeted value at work while preserving precious moments for his personal life and well-being. Surprisingly, even though he reduced his work hours to just 5-6 hours per day, Matt still managed to earn promotions and maintain a stellar reputation, leveraging his strengths to excel. He coined the term "uncaging" himself, symbolizing the process of consciously removing himself from the corporate cage he felt trapped in. Matt now teaches this philosophy to others, emphasizing the importance of living uncaged and not becoming beholden to the corporate system. Drawing inspiration from Ralph Waldo Emerson's concept of the "God within," Matt advocates for self-reliance and the ability to direct one's own future. While he acknowledges the stability and opportunities a nine-to-five job can offer, he also encourages ambitious individuals to test themselves entrepreneurially at some point in their lives. Entrepreneurship can provide meaning, personal growth, and open doors to opportunities not readily available in the corporate environment. Matt will inspire you to break free, unlock your potential, and embrace a life filled with meaning and purpose. Send us a Text Message. Today, Brian sits down with Jaclene Jason, PhD, as she shares her insights on the need for connection, the power of vulnerability, and managing anxiety. But how do we manage the anxiety that often comes with navigating life's challenges? Here are some strategies she suggests: 1. Breathe, Breathe, Breathe 2. Recognize Thoughts Are Not Facts 3. Move Your Body 4. Acknowledge that Acceptance Is Key Jaclene also highlights the power of mindfulness in managing anxiety. Send us a Text Message. Brian sits down with Charles Walker to discuss the importance of mental health support for therapists and the impact of unresolved childhood trauma on adults. Charles provides a unique perspective on the potential stress for male African American therapists who fall within the 4-5% demographic sought after by clients. He highlights the importance of mental health support for therapists themselves, comparing it to taking medication for other physical health issues. Did you know that more than two-thirds of children report experiencing at least one traumatic event by age 16? Childhood trauma can have long-lasting effects on individuals' lives, and it can manifest in various ways, including self-harm and suicidal ideation. Charles underscores the importance of providing outlets and resolving these issues in childhood to prevent negative outcomes in the future. For parents looking to vet therapists for their children, Charles suggests asking the right questions regarding the therapist's specialization and experience and assessing compatibility between the therapist and the child. He also talks about how cultural attitudes towards mental health can impact individuals from seeking therapy, particularly in African American and Latino communities. While there is still a mental health stigma in certain communities, younger generations are becoming more accepting of therapy. We hope you find this episode insightful and informative. Remember, taking care of one's mental health is just as important as taking medication for other physical health issues. Enjoy the conversation! Dr. Lee is a neuropsychologist who focuses on gender and racial mental health care disparities and neuropsychological assessment. During the episode, Dr. Lee discussed the trends she is seeing in her practice and the community she serves. She shared her experiences as one of the few psychologists of color in a large hospital system, where they faced pressure to provide education on culturally relevant topics and equity-focused therapeutic work due to the increasing diversity of students and staff. The episode also delved into the topic of mentorship, and how it can be crucial for increasing representation in the field. Dr. Lee shared how good mentors helped them to advocate for themselves and recognize when things were unethical or inappropriate during their training. Additionally, the episode shed light on how the pandemic has affected mental health. Dr. Lee discussed how remote learning has worked well for some neurodiverse kids who were historically on the fringe, while social isolation has triggered depressive episodes for others.
