A podcast about naturism for naturists (nudism and nudists to some people) While we obviously cover issues related to nudity, naturism is about much more than being naked so we cover topics related to self-esteem, body-image, body-acceptance, and living in a more natural way. The podcast is produced by Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park in Ontario, Canada.

Naturists have always seen the movement as one that can bring humanity together. International gatherings started in 1951 and led to the formation of the International Naturist Federation in 1953. But while we have our naturist values in common, the many languages of the world still make communicating challenging. What if there was a common language for everyone? A simple language with consistent grammar rules that was easy to learn? One that was everyone’s second language so that nobody has a native advantage? That was the idea behind Esperanto when it was created in 1887 and a group of naturists have been promoting it for many decades. Thierry Spanjaard tells us the vision and the fascinating story behind Esperanto in naturism. Often non-profit organizations struggle to find volunteers to fill the leadership roles. Yet in the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) 2024 election, there were two very solid candidates for president. Tim Mullins is a hard-working, dedicated, and long-time member of the executive. But the winner, Linda Weber, is relatively new to the AANR leadership. However, she already had a significant public profile due to her tireless social media work and public advocacy. At the 2024 AANR conference in Shangri-la Ranch, she discussed with us her plans for her upcoming term. The Naturist Society (TNS), founded in 1980 by Lee Baxandall (1935-2008) has been pivotal in promoting body acceptance, personal freedom, and harmony with nature. Through its magazine Nude & Natural , the World Guide to Nude Beaches and Recreation , national gatherings, and advocacy efforts, TNS has united naturists, fostered public understanding, and defended rights to clothing-optional recreation. Tim Chizmar interviews Nicky Hoffman who has been working with TNS since 1985. She took over the leadership of TNS in 2001 when Lee retired. She was part of a group of staff members that included Margaret Thornton and Judi Ditzler that purchased TNS. Thank you to the PODCAST PRODUCERS GUILD for recording this interview for Tim. Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is developing at breakneck speed. This episode goes against our normal policy of creating “evergreen” content that should stay relevant years from now. But the potential impact of A.I. on naturism is too important to ignore. ChatGPT first came out two years ago. That first version now seems primitive and various other versions of A.I. are infiltrating all aspects of our lives. It could be an incredible tool for naturists yet we are often excluded because of body-phobic policies similar to those of social media. We discuss what it all means with Evan Nix, the publisher of Nude Planet and the Naked Age podcast. Social media presents a dilemma for naturists; on one hand it provides a way to build community and promote our philosophy. However mainstream social media also consistently rejects our values, deletes our content, and bans us from their platforms. One solution is to create a social media network specifically for naturism. The downside is that no one other than other naturists will see our message. I sat down with George Oberle, the brains behind Naturist Hub, an invite-only nudist social network. Together, we explored the challenges, censorship, and the unique dynamics of being a naturist in the digital age. Since the beginning, naturism has been a family movement. Because its adherents believed that all of humanity would benefit, it was natural that children should be included. In part 1 we focused on the scholarly research which suggests that there is no evidence that children are harmed by non-sexualized social nudity, and good reason to believe they benefit. For the second segment we hear from five parents: Samii, Gillian, Nate, Nikki, and Lauren; who explain why they are raising their children as naturists while they answer many frequently asked questions and address common concerns. Since the beginning, naturism has been a family movement. Because its adherents believed that all of humanity would benefit, it was natural that children should be included. In Germany, a naturist-focused series of schools was even created by Adolf Koch in the early 20th century. (Körperkulturschule Adolf Koch) More recently, a multitude of scholarly research papers in psychology and sociology suggest that children reared in an atmosphere containing family social nudity benefit from the practice. Innovation and new ideas often come from non-landed clubs. The lack of a permanent facility means that they must look for new activities in non-traditional places. They also tend to be more urban and appeal to younger people. In our discussion with Calgary Nude Recreation we hear about their ideas, challenges, and successes. Since the resort town was built in the 1960’s, it has been promoted as the ultimate naturist destination; a place where you can fully live clothesfree and all modern services and conveniences are available. While this area of the city of Agde is officially known as the “Quartier Naturiste” (naturist neighbourhood) it is also often described simply as the “naked city”. In the last few decades it has also been heavily criticised for the open sexuality and preponderance of swingers’ clubs. So is it naturist? We asked Nick and Lins of Naked Wanderings and Dan Carlson, also known as Naturist Dan, of the Meandering Naturist blog about their experiences. In the fall of 2020, a collaborative project was launched on Twitter with the objective of creating a universal naturist symbol. Many designs were submitted and after several rounds of voting a symbol was selected. In this episode we feature other naturist/nudist podcasts. To be included they had to be active, meaning they had published at least one episode in 2021, and had to respond to our inquiry. (in some cases we sent multiple messages but didn’t get a response) It is unfortunate that many podcasts from the past are no longer publishing. And while we try to have “evergreen” content, some of these podcasts will likely stop in the future. But new ones will start so you should keep checking! None of the shows featured are in any way related to us. We are not endorsing any of them or their content. Getting media coverage (pun intended) is very easy for naturists. Journalists love to expose us (pun intended, again) because it gets great ratings and lots of clicks. For naturism it provides a lot of great publicity. But many naturists are leery to speak to the media because they’re afraid to look bad. In this episode we consider who/what is the media with media critic Jesse Brown and review strategies for dealing with journalists. Summary of the Media Relations Advice from the Show Know your topic and practice – understand (don’t memorize) the answers to typical questions. Use one of the many FAQs that exist. Here is the Bare Oaks one: https://www.bareoaks.ca/first-visit/ Prepare key messages. But do answer their actual question. To ignore a question just to make your statement is frustrating to the journalist and can make you look bad. Just practice smoothly incorporating your key messages into some of your answers. My key messages: #1 – Naturism is a centuries-old philosophy (ie. It’s well established and more than just being naked) #2 – Naturism is family-oriented (therefore not about sex) Journalists are people too – Their job is to ask the questions the audience wants to know. Don’t take the questions personally. Don’t be defensive. If they like you, they’re more likely to present you favourably. Don’t embarrass them or make fun of them but remember you are the expert, not them. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out errors or calmly disagreeing. Everyone is biased and it’s up to you to provide balance. Humour is a common way that people deal with discomfort. Don’t take the jokes personally. Have fun with them too and be prepared with your own jokes. Humour can also be a good way to point out the ridiculousness of clothing. e.g. “does your bathing suit keep you dry?” Don’t say “no comment” (it seems suspicious and it is frustrating for journalists) but don’t speculate or lie either. You don’t always have to know the answer. Acknowledge problems but avoid repeating negatives. Give brief response when possible as it makes it easier for them to edit and your “sound bite” is more likely to make it into the final cut. Respond quickly to any media inquiries – timelines and deadlines are tight! Make sure all people in your organization know to pass on inquiries to you and that they understand the urgency. Take all interview requests – they’re telling the story with or without you. If you participate at least you have a chance to give your side. But yes, there is definitely such a thing as bad press. You’re trying to soften it but you can’t always preven

Naturists are constantly censored in social media. Naturism itself gets lumped in with pornography despite the fact that Naturists oppose it, fight for body acceptance, against hypersexualization, and are trying to stop the objectification of the naked form. Yet social media censorship is increasing. “Community Standards” are ethnocentric, vague, and inconsistently applied. There seems to be one set of rules for celebrities and big advertisers; another for Naturists. When rules are erroneously applied there is essentially no appeal process. We interview a number of victims of social media censorship: Amy, a mom who is not a naturist but still has had several pictures of her children deleted Felicity and Jordan of Young Naturist America, who were one of the first naturist social media influencers and experienced incredible frustration as the constant nonsensical censorship. https://shitthatgotmebanned.com/ Héctor Martínez, from Mexico, who promoted body acceptance had well over a million followers on YouTube. His entire account and all his work was deleted without notice. Cleo, who runs Topless Topics, is a feminist who fights for equality. She discusses anything while topfree. While a man would have no problem, she has been censored, deleted, and banned so many times she can’t count it. https://www.toplesstopics.org/banned/ Nick and Lins of Naked Wanderings, who try to make a living as social media influencers in naturism. As Europeans (they’re from Belgium) they are dumbfounded by the puritanical rules and their income has been deeply affected by the censorship and bans. In 2019, their Instagram account was deleted without warning – they lost 50,000 followers! Many people are under the impression that those who live in Scandinavian countries are very comfortable with nudity. Yet Jan Dalchow, a Norwegian film director, felt enough body shame that he created a documentary about it. In this episode he shares with us how his investigation into why he is ashamed of his own naked body resulted in a film. His journey took him through Europe and the west coast of North America where he learned a lot about both the meaning of nudity and society’s need to censor it. We talk to three young people: one who rebelled against naturism when she was a teen; one who stayed as a naturist; and another teenager who is new to naturism. Why teenagers leave: The club does not make them feel comfortable (possibly because it isn’t really about true naturist values like acceptance and tolerance of others) The club does not offer them things to do, peers to hang out with, or opportunities (e.g. jobs!) Their social circles are at home with their school friends and they want to fit in with them They want to develop their own identity by differentiating themselves from their parents (rebellion!) They would rather stay home alone while their parents go to the club (freedom!) So teenagers leave for a variety of reasons. They always have and they always will. If it’s reasons numbers 3 to 5 there’s not much that can be done. But if a club deals with reasons numbers 1 and 2, then some teens may stay. At Bare Oaks, we have actually had teenagers visiting us on their own because their parents are not there. (reason #4 but reversed) Over the years, we have also had many young people, including teens, work as staff for the summer and they loved it! We discuss dating for naturists/nudists. Because single men are the ones who seem to have the greatest challenge in naturism, we focus our advice on them. We interview Melissa who is an affirmed naturist and Christine who is not but would consider it for the right guy. A summary of the dating advice: Don’t focus on naturist/nudist dating sites. Most, and possibly all of them, are scams. Don’t limit yourself to existing naturists. Don’t make naturism the focus of your profile but don’t keep it secret either. Gentlemen, nude pictures (and dick pics in particular) don’t work. Keep trying; you need to talk to many people before you find someone who is compatible. If you’re in Canada, our survey suggests you’ll need to talk to 10 people before you find one who is willing to try naturism. Treat people with respect. Every naturist needs to understand pornography because the images of naturism are so often classified as pornographic by the general public. And, for nearly a century, hustlers have exploited naturists in order to create porn. But most importantly, we need to understand how pornography is hurting us and affecting our relationships. Not only is naturism NOT about pornography, it actually offers an antidote to its ills. From the very beginning of naturism/nudism, there have been people who have exploited naturists and nudists. They go against the very core values of our movement. They objectify our bodies and sexualize our activities. They turn our philosophy into a source of personal gain. (money, sex, power, pride, etc…) Some of them even pander to deviants but conceal themselves beneath the cloak of legitimacy that naturism provides. All too often, we have been willing participants. The exploiters use our tolerance and open-mindedness against us. They infect a club and twist the definition of naturism to suit their purposes. They tempt us with the money that many clubs are always short of. Because naturists are intelligent, they understand that life is not black & white so some compromise is sometimes necessary. But those small concessions can lead to a very slippery slope. In this episode, we discuss two infamous clubs in Roselawn, Indiana that were victimized by exploiters. We listen to a 1966 radio interview with the founders of one of the clubs that illustrates the lofty initial goals of the club as a contrast to the current situation. Play Now Episode XXVI

Some individuals have more trouble than others getting people to accept them. While that is true in our society as a whole, it can become even more pronounced in a naturist environment. This is likely because traditional barriers are dropped and the individual is foremost. Additionally, people who are new to naturism can feel self-conscious and clumsy as they battle emotions of awkwardness for breaching traditional societal taboos. For single men in particular, intentions can easily be misinterpreted. It is normal for a single man to want to find a partner. But it is a fine line between showing interest and being creepy. Not all single women come to naturist clubs looking to meet someone. Women appreciate naturism because it allows them to escape society’s pressure to reach an impossible ideal of physical beauty. In naturism, they feel accepted for who they are. But too much attention from a single man, as friendly as it might be, can remind them of mainstream society’s oppressive focus on their body. It can feel like harassment. In general, making friends in naturism is not that different from the rest of the world. Introducing yourself, being friendly without being overbearing, finding people with common interests, participating in activities, listening to people, and being trustworthy & reliable are always good ways to make friends anywhere. Naturism is founded on respect for self and others. Being respectful (not just acting respectful) is the fundamental basis of good interpersonal relationships. In this show, we discuss some pointers for people who might be having some trouble getting accepted in a naturist club. Of the two genders, women get the most pressure from society to meet to unrealistic expectations of physical beauty. That is one of the reason that women benefit most from being a naturist but it is also why they have the hardest time trying naturism. For a woman, the idea of being nude in a social setting is fraught with fears related to a lifetime of sexual objectification and subconscious attacks on their self-esteem. In this episode, we explore how women in naturism overcame some of these barriers and what they get out of living a naturist life. We also review strategies for convincing someone to try naturism. To summarize the strategies presented: Review your own motivation Be open and confident about naturism Be sympathetic and understanding Try a therapeutic approach Be patient Be very careful of the first experience & praise gently Links to items mentioned in the show: CBC (Outfront has been canceled and the show “What not to wear” is no longer available.) Episode VIII We discuss the many reasons why clothing-optional policies do not work in naturist clubs. Naturism wasn’t always so tolerant. In the beginning of the 20th century when naturism started, wearing clothes in a naturist club was not an option. The clothing-optional policy, a well-meaning attempt to be more inclusive and to make it easier for new people, has actually back-fired. We interview Stephen Crowley author of Loxie & Zoot and The Bare Pit cartoons. The first story, Loxie & Zoot , was published as a book. He has since published 12 more stories (nearly 400 pages) on the web. Stephen’s cartoons very effectively depict of every body type and shape without bias against any of them. His stories are appropriate for all ages and contain lessons for both naturists and non-naturists. Stephen pokes fun at many textile misconceptions about naturism but also takes a few shots at some naturist hang-ups. You can also see some of Stephen’s art on Bare Oaks’ website and printed materials. Stephen discusses his inspiration for the strip, the impact of naturism as a topic in cartoons, and how he goes about creating The Bare Pit . We close with Stephen describing naturism in Australia. The image included with the post was specially drawn by Stephen for this podcast. Can you guess who the characters are? www.TheBarePit.com Episode VII

In this episode, we discuss naturist fiction with Tom (T.H.) Pine who has authored many short stories and novels. In fact, he was an author before he became a naturist. Discovering naturism led him naturally to writing naturist fiction. We talk about his stories, his writing techniques, his inspiration, the type of fiction that he likes and what he thinks doesn’t work. As part of those discussions, we debate the pros and cons of including sex and sexuality in naturist fiction. Tom also gives some advice for listeners who want to write their own fictional stories. We close with a discussion on e-books and the future of printed books. A discussion with Mark Storey the author of “ Cinema au naturel, a history of nudist film .” (We apologize for the poor sound quality of Mark’s voice. Due to a technical problem, the recording is difficult to understand.) In this episode, we explore the frequent conflict between naturists who wanted to promote the values of the movement against the commercial film producers who wanted to exploit the nudity of naturism for salacious reasons. In the early to mid-twentieth century in particular, many movies were made under the guise of nudism documentaries because of tough censorship laws. The film soundtrack clip is from from the 1961 movie Have Figure Will Travel which was partially filmed at Sun Valley Gardens in Ontario, Canada. Episode II

This is the introductory episode for the Naturist Living Show. It is a brief introduction to the show and its purpose and objectives. Naturism is more than just taking your clothes off. It is a life philosophy with physical, psychological, environmental, social and moral benefits. The basic tenets of naturist are respect for self, for others and for the environment. Future episodes of this podcast will deal with topics that touch on these themes. At the end of the show, we play “Nature is” by Brian Madison . Episode I Nature Is ©2003 Brian Madison When winter gets me feeling low There’s just one place I want to go Can’t wait to see something live and green Shed these layers, follow me dear Shake of this grey winter right here The trees and us with nothing in between Unconstrained by cold conventions Losing all our old pretensions Lord knows baby, we have paid our dues If we abandon all these modest schemes And ratify some better memes We’ve got nothing to lose but our blues Naturally you, naturally me, naturally we Naturally you, naturally me, naturally we Barefoot beginnings that’s a start To liberate our gentle hearts The grass between our toes no shoes or socks <span style="font-family: 'courier new', couri
