Our "Worst Stories of 2024" episode! January... From Study Finds: "Magic mushrooms traced back to asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs" ... - icymi, magic mushrooms are called that because they look like tiny magicians wearing top hats... just kidding. Magic mushrooms are psychoactive and please consult ten physicians, 40 spiritual advisers and 9 lawyers before going any further on this journey. Especially foraging for them, because that can be extremely dangerous if you get it wrong! The article is about how researchers have learned that the dinosaurs didn't have magic mushrooms but around the time the dinos went extinct, magic mushrooms showed up on planet earth... 65 million years ago, the same time that an asteroid hit earth and started the beginning of the end for dinosaurs... which was new information for researchers. https://studyfinds.org/magic-mushrooms-asteroid/ February... From NBC 9 News... Two high school kids in Colorado have received scholarships to play Division One Cornhole for Winthrop University... The athletes are very jacked about it quoted as saying "It's groundbreaking... It's making history!" ... Congratulations to Jaxson and Gavin. At some point professional Cornhole became a thing? and now also opportunities for young athletes to get an education on that Cornhole scholarship... btw Winthrop University is in South Carolina, United States of America. They are the first Division 1 school to offer Cornhole scholarships... Here's another quote... This is from Jaxson talking to media about receiving that Cornhole scholarship... "It's super awesome to make history." I can't argue with that. How fantastic is this? There's a whole new college sport being thrown into the mix... Well, it's not new but new to Division 1 schools... btw, if they don't have Cornhole where you are, it's that lawn game where you throw a beanbag and try to get that bean bag in a hole... The most basic way to describe it. It's a game that at one time I bet people who played horseshoes would make fun of... that part is just speculation. https://www.9news.com/article/sports/local-sports/colorado-cornhole-scholarship/73-ba279aed-6721-4a17-8610-1f6c3fd583df <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUtaAYgPxoJ5Z

Our "Top Stories of the Year" episode! Here are this week's stories... January The 10 year old girl behind the movement to bring back Haggis flavored chips (crisps)... 10 year old Grace is in Scotland. She loved Haggis chips and when she heard that Haggis flavored chips were being made a seasonal flavor instead of year round, Grace wrote a polite letter to the company saying it would make her sad. They're giving her a year's supply of chips, a tour of the chip factory, and the Haggis chips are back! Victory!! https://news.sky.com/story/girl-10-wins-years-supply-of-crisps-after-campaigning-to-get-niche-flavour-back-on-shelves-13041322 February Gizmodo headline "Japan zoo recaptures escaped man in costume in adorable emergency drill." So at the zoo, they have this thing where they practice what to do if a bear got away... they do it every year. I think we even talked about it on this program before But it made news again because, you know, it's kinda gaining popularity... they hire someone or an employee gets dressed up as a bear and then the zoo workers initiate a take-down. They get one of those bear traps and that's it! Just kidding. https://gizmodo.com/zoo-simulated-bear-escape-japan-1851209277 March Couple of things I didn't know... first of all, hello to our friends in Missouri... the area code in St. Louis is 314 and so that's become a bit of a local holiday in St. Louis... 314 Day/ March 14th. And so I didn't know that... I also didn't know the world record for most people in one place with underwear on their head is 270 participants... Well on March 14th/ 314 Day in St. Louis they're going to try to get 314 participants wearing underwear on their head. This is at a museum in St. Louis. They will supply the underpants. You just got to be there. All we need is your presence and a good attitude. So good luck and shout out to the City Museum in St. Louis, Missouri. https://www.ndtv.com/offbeat/us-museum-attempts-underwear-on-head-world-record-for-local-holiday-5193222 April When to exercise for maximum st

❿ Sticky, Gooey, World Record!- the other day, on National S'mores Day, the folks at Smoresapalooza were officially awarded a Guinness World Record for most people S'moring at the same time...- 891 people in Grapevine, Texas put Graham Wafers, chocolate, and toasted marshmallows together to make this record... so sticky... yes delicious, but so darn sticky! #heroes- btw, they used 500 fire pits to do this b/c everybody had to do their own s'more at the same time.. See www.nbcdfw.com/news/national-international/hundreds-in-texas-combine-to-break-smores-related-guinness-world-record/3314230/%3famp=1 ❾ The Canadian Amateur Safe Cracker and the 75 year old safe...- This bookstore in Baltimore had an old old safe without a combination... they couldn't get into it and of course they wanted to... if you have a 75 year old safe and you DON'T want to get that thing open, you might be a psychopath *consult your physician*.- the bookstore put the challenge out on social media... "Hey safe crackers, we've got one for ya" (paraphrase)...- a fella named Rick from Winnipeg who is a lock-picking and safe-cracking enthusiast (not a professional) did some crowdfunding and had enough money to travel to Baltimore within three or four days... so Rick got to go and try what a bunch of other safe crackers tried and failed at... and he got the safe open!- the deal from the bookstore was that you could split whatever was inside the safe 50/50... but it turned out that the only thing in there was a pay stub from the 1920s- I get the feeling it was never about the treasure for Rick, it was about the adventure... See the CBC report https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2255109187975 ❽ Riding a bicycle backwards for 500 miles is not impossible? *citation needed- Hoops Hooper at UPI filed this one the other day... a guy from Alaska who can ride his bike backwards needed more of a challenge, I guess, and so he entered a 500 mile bicycle race and did the whole thing riding backwards!- they think that's a world record, now we just wait for the folks at Guinness World Records to make it official...- byw, his name is Walker... Will Walker... but he bicycles... backwards... idk why that's messing with me but it is... a guy named Walker who is famous for a 500 mile race but he didn't walk it... or use a walker, that also would've made more sense to me... See www.upi.com/amp/Odd_News/2023/08/10/Guinness-World-Records-distance-cycling-backward-RAGBRAI/5631691686278/ ❼ The Butter Cow of the Illinois State Fair...- this was picked up by a lot of news sources and I'm glad because I had never

(BEGIN EPISODE TRANSCRIPT) skateboarding cats and speeding wheelbarrows. What a weird week! Hi friends, I'm Scott and this is What a Weird Week, a show about the weird stuff from this week's news. If you want a transcript or stuff to subscribe to our podcast, all the links that we talk about, you can get everything at shownotes.page. Shownotes.page. This is season five, episode 24, first published Friday, June 14th, 2024. ❿ I'm calling this one Fast Times in Barrowville. When they make the movie. Dylan Phillips, a British mechanic, broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest wheelbarrow. Record speed was over 52 miles per hour. He built the wheelbarrow just for fun at first and then found out there was actually a world record. If he could make his wheelbarrow go really fast, he set the record in Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Apparently, one of the worst forms of transportation is a fast wheelbarrow because according to Dylan, no suspension. It's a rough ride. and also a little bit terrifying. But imagine how fast you could get all your yard work done if your wheelbarrow went 50 miles per hour. So far not available commercially. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce9961lg6l1o ❾ elephant names are in the news. Researchers think that elephants in the wild have names and call each other by their names. Not a lot of animals do that. How do they know elephants are actually doing it? Short answer is they're experts. That would be me paraphrasing the short answer on that one. Longer answer is they studied hundreds of sounds made by mom elephants and their elephant children over the decades. And it seems as though mom was using a certain sound to talk to each elephant kid. That's me paraphrasing a scientific article. It also seems like those elephant children recognize their unique sound or name because they could record some of these sounds and the kid would be like, what? Who said my name when they played the sound back? Again, that's me paraphrasing. That wasn't an actual... In case you thought I was playing the actual audio from the field. No, that was it was me saying who's calling my name. It was me portraying the elephant, you guys. All right, we're off to a hot start. https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/06/12/call-me-by-my-name-elephants-low-rumbles-could-be-unique-to-one-another-research-reveals Up next is a dinosaur discovery. A big old hailstone, maybe a record breaking hailstone. It's a biggie. This is What a Weird Week, a show about the weird stuff from the news. ❽ A driver... No, he wasn't driving. He was diving. Sorry. We'll keep that in. Let's just- We're on a deadline here, you guys. A diver discovered a rare mastodon tusk off the coast of Florida. The diver's name is Alex. First, he thought it was wood, just a big old chunk of wood. But upon closer inspection, a much rarer find than a chunk of wood. <

Electric spoons and mysterious goldfish. What a weird week Hi friends, I'm Scott and this is what a weird week It's a weekly catch up on all the weird stuff that happened in the news. I think that's it that summed it up. Let's go This is season five episode, can't remember, first released on June 7th, 2024. ❿ Our number 10 story this week was on a lot of newscasts about the fisher, the magnet fisher, the person who you go to a bridge, right? Magnet fishing, you have this powerful magnet on a rope or some sort of leash, maybe, and you throw that magnet in the water. And what comes up a lot of times is junk. In this case, it was a safe with waterlogged $100 bills, totaling an estimated $100,000. So this fellow, this James fellow, reports it to the authorities. There is some sort of finders keepers situation. So James gets to keep the approximately $100,000. The plan now is take it to Washington, see how much is salvageable and leave Washington with a whole bunch of money that you found with a magnet. This all happened in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, Queens, New York. Do you think there'd be more money in that body of water, that particular body of water? Is it teeming with mysterious money? Is it gonna be a tourist destination now for magnet fishers? These are questions that remain to be answered. ❾ Nine. Electric spoon enhances saltiness on sale in Japan. So it's a battery operated spoon that somehow makes food taste saltier. The theory behind it, like why we should all have one is we will consume less salt. It is only simulated saltiness. So we'll eat less salt, but we'll still have that salty flavor that many of us crave. And for some of us, it's too much salt and it's not good for us. So electric salt spoons is the way to go. It's gonna save us all, you guys. I'll put a link if you wanna learn how it works, how it interacts with sodium ions on our tongue. So you can kind of do a deep dive on that if you want to. Or maybe, like me, you're just like, don't care about the science, take my money, please. Up next, we have a story of an alleged Pringles thief who may end up with a lifetime supply of Pringles and a mysterious goldfish discovered. Those stories are next. Thank you for listening. 8. Pringles in the news this past week. A fellow stole a lot of containers of Pringles. This is Nottinghamshire in the United Kingdom. Stole some Pringles, admitted guilt, got sentenced, and then Sky News, we got the headline, the thief told police, once you pop you can't stop. That wasn't an official defense, I don't think. Perhaps it was presented in court, your honor. Once you pop, you can't stop. But that did not convince the authorities. And so this fellow, Adam, now sentenced. I don't want to make light of any

(BEGIN EPISODE TRANSCRIPT) ❿ We've got a follow up to a story we had earlier on this show where the town in Japan installed a giant black screen to stop people from taking pictures of Mount Fuji. It just got to be too much. And these pictures, some of them got famous on social media. So everybody wanted to get this certain angle of a picture of Mount Fuji where it looks like Mount Fuji is on top of a gas station or something like that. So they installed this giant black screen, eight feet tall, 66 feet long. The next day holes were in the black screen, holes the size of camera lenses. People were, you know, poking holes and still getting the special shot. But the town is still pleased. It's cut down and over tourism quite a bit. The giant black screen with the holes in it. That's your update. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-05-29/holes-found-in-screen-used-to-stop-people-taking-mt-fuji-photos/103906396 ❾ This one got picked up by a lot of national news orgs. I mean, you got a built in soundbite, you got video role that you can play. The Michigan man who went to Zoom court. So he had a Zoom call court and he was driving while appearing in Zoom court. And it was about his suspended license case. The fellow named Corey, the judge, Judge Simpson, was astonished. According to headlines. Let's put in a soundbite right here. "Mr. Harris, are you driving? Just give me one second. I'm parking right now. OK. So maybe I don't understand something. This is a driver license suspended. That is correct, your honor. And he was just driving. I don't even know why he would do that. So defendant's bond is revoked in this matter." So, of course, you're not supposed to be on Zoom while driving. That's dangerous. But I could understand in a way, in a sense, I mean, if you want to prove to the judge that you shouldn't have a suspended license and you can Zoom call while driving, the defense rests, your honor. Anyway, the judge didn't think of it that way and ordered the fellow quarry to return to jail, revoked his bond and he was ordered to return to jail. ❽ Just about every headline took advantage of the fact this truck was in the news, the truck carrying strawberries overturned and caused a traffic jam. Strawberry jam. A strawberry traffic jam. Most every headline had some kind of variation on that. This is about the big rig carrying 40,000 pounds of strawberries which overturned on a freeway in San Jose. And traffic was backed up for some hours as the strawberry spill was cleaned up. A couple of other notes about this, no major injuries reported and strawberry jam is delicious. https://www.foxnews.com/us/truck-carrying-40k-pounds-strawberries-overturns-creating-sticky-traffic-jam ❼ A fellow in

Also less likely to lead to obesity: dairy products (unsweetened). Parents are advised to give their children fruit and milk instead of sweetened milk and other products with added sugar. And then you hear about this bird flu in the news. It's not fun. It's not funny, but it is weird. As a matter of fact, it's stressful and all you want to do is cuddle a cow when you hear about the bird flu outbreak. And in a sad irony. Our lead story this week from Sky News is how bird flu, as it infects cows, is cutting into the lucrative cow cuddling market. People pay money and cuddle cows. I didn't know that, but they call it, Sky News calls it a US craze. Our friends in the United States of America, is it a craze? A cow cuddling craze? And now, you know, instead of getting therapeutic comfort from cows, officials are urging farmers to limit outside visitors. So you're stressed about the headline and then you can't even cuddle the cow and you get more stressed and it is a vicious circle. I'm sorry you guys, this one is not a light story. I try to keep it light but let's keep it down to one bird flu story per week. How about that? https://news.sky.com/story/bird-flu-outbreak-could-threaten-us-cow-cuddling-craze-13128725 ❾ Headline from Smithsonian Mag. The story is about a shipping container filled with Legos, which was lost at sea in 1997. And this young fellow in Cornwall, UK has been going to the beach to find Legos. And the holy grail of the Legos is the octopus. And after two years of searching... The 13 year old has found an octopus. Quite rare, quite a find. There's a whole project, someone named Tracy Williams has started up the Lego Lost at Sea Project. And for years now they've been finding Lego pieces that were lost at sea. The last plastic octopus was found 18 years ago. They're excited. Some more pieces are turning up because of the winter, the type of winter they had at the seashore in Cornwall. Interesting hobby. That was the headline from Sky News earlier this week. Milan, Italy has had enough and ice cream is outlawed. You will go to ice cream jail and you will, which I imagine is very hot, and you will sit there and think about what you've donen, Ice cream lovers. In fact, if you read the article, it's first of all, they're talking about gelato, not ice cream, which I believe they're different things, aren't they? I'm not all that cultured. And it's not exactly a ban. It's places that sell ice cream or gelato and other fast food like pizza and late night foods. They have to shut her down after midnight because tourists and revelers. Tourists and people who eat food are too darn loud for the good folks of Milan, Italy. (From Jan 19th) This is an article out of the UK from Sky News about how some rivers have gotten "canalised" over the years ("canalised" = "straightened out like a canal"). Now they're gonna try to bend those rivers again and if the researchers are right, when we bend it like Beckham our rivers might be less likely to flood. Or... you're able to control where it happens, maybe is more accurate... It's about slowing the water flow just like a bendy road slows down traffic. (Looking at you, Lombard St. San Francisco.) https://news.sky.com/story/could-making-rivers-bendy-again-help-prevent-flooding-13047000 *UPDATE: Other than a report on how costly flood prep is, there has been little followup on this. *Does it hold up? And now they're asking that you check your cookie dough and be careful eating your cookie dough. This happened in Kansas. This poor lady lost a diamond off her wedding ring. It's worth about four grand. Figures it is either in the chocolate chip cookies that went out last Friday, or in the sugar cookies, or peanut butter cookies. So be careful eating those cookies. It was on their Facebook where they made the announcement (be careful eating cookies may contain diamonds.) ❾ Beard World Records and Facial Hair World Records were acknowledged this past week by the Guinness World Records folks. These were all set during the National Beard and Mustache Championships late last year. Just being acknowledged now and officially written up by the Guinness World Records folks over on their website. One of the records was Longest Beard Chain. This is where you stand side by side with some other beardos. And you divide your beard into two. Left side gets attached to the person on your left/ The right side of your beard gets attached to the person on your right. And you twist those beards together or maybe there's some sort of beard scrunchie involved sometimes? Anyway, you just form a chain out of those magnificent beards. And the new world record is... 195 feet and something of beards. They did a similar thing with mustaches. The longest mustache chain. 20 feet and something. To participate, your mustache or beard has to be qualifying / has to be a certain length and then of course it has to be robust in order to withstand all of the fastening to other people's beards... and I would say another skill is you have to be able to stand still because you gotta wait while everybody's beard gets attached. If somebody starts to wiggle & a jiggle, well, you're gonna come undone. And that's the end of that world record. ❽ David Record Breaker Rush/ The fellow who wants to break all the world records. The only thing was she wasn't driving her van. It was one of these deals where the camera catches you speeding and it snaps your picture and you receive a ticket... "Hey here's the evidence. Look at this photo. We caught you speeding." Well this Grammy in East Cleveland Ohio, Joanne Gibson, was having her van towed to the shop at the time of the ticket. So the tow truck was speeding. ❾ The Squat World Record... Think about how many squats you can do. Think about maybe working really hard. How many more squats could you do? And then, you know, multiply that by 10. Are you anywhere close to 26,000 squats? Me, neither. The world record for most squats in 24 hours is more than 26,000 squats! ❽ From Hoops Hooper, who is the Weird News Guru at United Press International... (Every week we like to feature a story by Ben "Hoops" Hooper.) This week Ben filed a story about the chicken who enjoyed the solar eclipse while wearing tiny solar eclipse glasses. This chicken in Arkansas. I mean, if you love your chicken and you want your chicken to enjoy a solar eclipse, of course you're gonna fashion some sort of safety equipment for that chicken to look at the solar eclipse. So a person named Tad made the news. Tad the human and Gertrude. That's the name of the chicken. Tad also was wearing eclipse glasses. It's just a fun photo, like so many people were taking photos of themselves enjoying the eclipse this past week, and someone snapped a picture of Tad and Gertrude, and it started to gain momentum online, and... next thing you know it's on... KTHV-TV!? And we learn that Gertrude laid an egg during the eclipse. I don't know what you get when you lay an egg during an eclipse, but it seems like some sort of superhero folklore, doesn't it? It was that earthquake that made the news on the east coast of the United States. This is one of those stories that gained momentum online as a funny social media post and then the news media reached out to talk to the fellow. I got this one from HuffPost. It's a story about something that happened a few weeks ago to this family in Naples, Florida. Alejandro Otero was on the news. Wink News interviewed him about the weird thing that happened. The headline is "Object that crashed through Florida roof may have come from the International Space Station." ... ❾ From India Today, the story of a bear that escaped a zoo. It's been a little while since we had a bear story. We've featured bears ringing doorbells and waiting for people to answer the door so they could eat them. That's what I theorize. The bears are certainly sneaky and intelligent you guys (based on the news articles that we've featured). So this one from India Today broke on April the first and it's always hard to trust a news story that comes out on April the first, but this one appears to be legit about a zoo in India where the bear escaped... and listen to what happened... they had like a storm... a windstorm and a tree falls and it fell in such a way in the bear's enclosure that the bear was able to use that tree, that fallen tree trunk, to climb to freedom... ❽ It's another one from Hoops Hooper, a story that came out last fall, but Hoops did an article on it this week. Coin tosses. This one didn't get a lot of coverage when it came out in the fall, but the research indicates, well, it's game-changing research. Literally game-changing research, because apparently when you flip a coin, it's not 50-50 odds... ❼ Kyle, Texas back in the news. We talked about this before. For the last five years, Kyle Texas has been attempting to set a world record with their gathering of Kyles. And the record is people with the same name in the same place, the most people with the same name in the same place at once... ❻ Eclipse Flavored Sun Chips in the news... The promotion department at SunChips® has got the brand in the news with a limited-edition flavor that will be given away during the total eclipse... which is 4 minutes and 27 seconds... the new flavor is Solar Eclipse Limited-Edition Pineapple Habanero and Black Bean Spicy Gouda.
