Who is the Hardcore Therapist?
Wed, April 16, 2025
Hey everyone, welcome back to The Hardcore Therapist ! I’m so glad you’re here. Today we’re diving into a question that hits close to home for a lot of us: “How do I set boundaries without feeling guilty—and what do I do if someone crosses my boundaries after I was clear about them?” Whew. This is a big one. And if you're anything like me—or like most of the people I work with—you’ve probably struggled with this at some point. Questions to ask yourself if you struggle with boundaries: “Where in my life am I consistently feeling drained—and what boundary could help protect my energy there?” “What kind of pushback am I afraid of—and what does that fear really say about my past experiences?”

Today, we’re diving into a loaded, raw, and often painful topic—how to let go of people who don’t enhance your life—including family. I’m not here to sugarcoat this. I’m here to help you honor your mental health, even when it means making decisions that go against every message you've been taught about loyalty, tradition, or what it means to be a “good person.” Prompts for Healing: Take a moment—right now or later today—and grab a journal, a voice note app, or even just some quiet time alone. Ask yourself the following questions: Who in my life consistently leaves me feeling drained, anxious, or unseen? (Name them without judgment—this is about truth, not blame.) What have I tried to do to change or heal this relationship? Have those efforts been mutual? (Notice if you’ve been carrying the weight alone.) What would protecting my peace look like with this person? Less contact? Stronger boundaries? Emotional distance? Full disconnection? What am I afraid will happen if I let go? (Get honest about the guilt, fear of backlash, or fear of being alone.) What might open up in my life if I create space from this person? (Energy, clarity, new relationships, joy, rest, freedom?) Bonus Prompt: Write a letter you’ll never send to this person. Say everything you’ve never had the safety to say. Then either keep it, burn it, or delete it—but let it move through you.

On this episode of The Hardcore Therapist, today we're diving into a powerful topic: self-abandonment. This is something so many of us struggle with without even realizing it—saying yes when we mean no, ignoring our own needs, or constantly putting others before ourselves. But what does it really mean to abandon yourself, and more importantly, how can we stop doing it?

First, I just want to acknowledge how incredibly painful and confusing this must feel. To be in a marriage where one person has emotionally stepped away, while you’re still physically sharing a home and parenting together, is a deeply complicated experience. It makes sense that you’re struggling with what to do next.

I'm beyond excited about this episode with Kulpa and Vasudeva from SOMA—Sacred Order of Mystic Apogees. This New Jersey-based ecstatic kirtan band brings a powerful fusion of their hardcore and metal roots into the world of devotional music. I can't wait to dive into their journey and explore how their music bridges the sacred and the hardcore. @soma_kirtan https://open.spotify.com/artist/4O5YtIxvnil55Ql8O5m0SJ https://tylerchildersmusic.com/pages/tour-dates?srsltid=AfmBOoonyAKvWGiMxWNNPAmChAKnQzKCG0vFi5vrcSticsjxNGGWlFWj

On this episode of The Hardcore Therapist, we’re diving into something a lot of people don’t talk about: when self-help actually does more harm than good."\ We live in a world that tells us we should always be improving, leveling up, and becoming our ‘best selves.’ But what happens when the pursuit of growth turns into a never-ending cycle of self-criticism, anxiety, and burnout? Are we really improving, or are we just running from ourselves? That’s what we’re unpacking today. If you’ve ever felt like no matter how much personal development you do, it’s never enough.

On this episode of The Hardcore Therapist , I tackle a powerful question: What is a dismissive-avoidant attachment style, and how does it show up in relationships? A dismissive-avoidant person’s attachment style is shaped by a deep discomfort with emotional closeness and dependence. This isn’t something they consciously choose. More often than not, it’s rooted in their early experiences—where they may have learned that relying on others for emotional support wasn’t safe or dependable. To protect themselves, they developed a coping mechanism built on fierce independence and emotional distance. While this approach may have served them in their formative years, it can create significant challenges in romantic relationships, friendships, and even parenting.

A listener of my recent podcast asked, “How do you help a teen coregulate, especially if they don’t want to be touched or think you’re judging them because of your facial expression?” Helping a teenager coregulate involves offering emotional support while modeling healthy regulation strategies. Teens often experience intense emotions and benefit from a parent’s calm presence and empathetic communication. It’s important to respect their boundaries, use a nonjudgmental tone, and reassure them through active listening. Creating a safe space where they feel heard and understood can make a significant difference in fostering emotional connection and helping them navigate their feelings.

Anxiety is a natural response to stress that can be beneficial in helping us stay alert and prepared, but when it becomes overwhelming, it can lead to conditions like Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). While both involve excessive fear or worry that disrupts daily life, their focus differs. SAD centers on a fear of social situations due to concerns about being judged or humiliated, while GAD involves persistent worry about a wide range of everyday events or activities. SAD is triggered by specific social interactions, such as public speaking or meeting new people, often leading to avoidance behaviors and physical symptoms like blushing or trembling in those settings. In contrast, GAD is characterized by ongoing, generalized worry, with physical symptoms such as fatigue, restlessness, and muscle tension. Despite these differences, both disorders share similarities, including emotional distress, physical symptoms like sleep disturbances, and chronic impacts on quality of life.
