MOST POPULAR 2024 EPISODE (Re-issue): We are re-issuing our interview with Ben Moon – surfer, climber, photographer, and outdoors enthusiast – as the most popular episode of Dog Save The People during 2024. From seeking constant adventure to having a health scare at a young age, to now learning to appreciate slowing down and being in one place, his dogs have served as a reflection of his path at each stage. Many know his Husky and Pit mix Denali from Ben’s short film and memoir, but now his current Australian Shepherd and Husky mix Nori is helping him write a new chapter.

PART TWO - One of the most hot-button discussions in Turkey is how street dogs impact everyday citizens. Most people in cities like Istanbul are used to it, with a long tradition of living alongside them. However, in peripheral areas, there is not always as much support. When government municipalities started to push strays from city centers to outside suburban and rural areas, out of their natural environment, there have been a relatively small number of attacks and accidents. These have reportedly been sensationalized in the media, making it seem like a bigger phenomenon, and said to be weaponized by the government to instill fear. With the Turkish parliament passing the so-called ‘massacre law’ in July 2024, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government positioned it as a way to protect civilians from these stray dogs. However, in reality, this will be used as a way to significantly harm many strays. Animal rights activists have tried to present alternate solutions or volunteer their time and services, but so far the government has closed the door on that dialogue. In the second episode of this two-part series, we spoke to local guests about how much stray dogs would be missed from the streets and how the government should embrace the passionate and hard-working animal rights community to reach a better solution that still addresses the overpopulation problem while going about it safely and humanely. Guest experts featured, in order, include Ahmet Senpolat ( HAYTAP , Animal Rights Federation), Nazlan Ertan (journalist), Lisanne Hillen ( Melez Dog Rescue ), and Elizabeth Lo (filmmaker). The Turkish Parliament passed new legislation this summer that aims to remove all stray dogs from the streets by 2028, as these dogs are labeled by the government dangerous and causing harm to humans. This is a significant shift in policy in a country where street dogs have been embedded and accepted into its culture for centuries. Turkish animal welfare groups say in reality there are very few deadly dog attacks, but social media sensationalization and politicization of incidents have complicated debates. While everyone agrees there needs to be better plans to manage the country’s dog overpopulation, there is conflict on how to handle it. Animal advocates argue the 100,000 capacity in current shelters cannot humanely accommodate an estimated four million street dogs, calling the new stray dog legislation the “massacre law.” In the first episode of this two-part series, we explore the unique culture tradition of stray dogs living in Turkey, and discuss the problems and challenges around this new stray dog removal law. We spoke to several guest experts about their perspective on Turkey’s stray dog dilemma with the new law. Guests include Elizabeth Lo (filmmaker), Nazlan Ertan (journalist), Lisanne Hillen (Melez Dog Rescue), and Ahmet Senpolat (HAYTAP, Animal Rights Federation). Ben Moon is a photographer and filmmaker who has integrated his passion for the outdoors into his work, including as a longtime contributor to Patagonia with climbing and surfing imagery in particular. Dogs have always been part of Ben’s life, but it was after a divorce, living out of a car, and then a colon cancer diagnosis at 29, that the companionship with his rescue dog Denali, a pit-husky mix, took on a new meaning. Their strong connection was highlighted in a 2015 short film called ‘Denali’ which honors his late dog and has amassed over two million views. As a follow-up, Ben then wrote a 2020 memoir, also entitled Denali, that took an even more introspective look at the power of their human-dog relationship. Now at a new life stage, with his 8-year-old rescue dog Nori, an Australian shepherd and husky mix, they have settled down in a beach house on the Oregon Coast. Ben is learning to appreciate the slow build and the benefits that come from settling down in one place. Ben speaks about his life journey and dogs with Dr. Sharon Holland, an author and distinguished Professor of American Studies at the University of North Carolina (UNC), as well as the host for Dog Save The People. For centuries, stray dogs in Turkey have lived outside amongst their humans. These strays do not have individual guardians, but are rather taken care of by the community. Last week, at the end of July 2024, Turkey’s parliament passed a new law that aims to get the strays off the streets, which would completely change this longstanding cultural relationship. With this re-issue episode, we wanted to bring back a conversation we had with filmmaker Elizabeth Lo about her documentary on stray dogs in Istanbul. Elizabeth Lo is an award-winning nonfiction filmmaker born and raised in Hong Kong and a graduate of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Her debut feature film, Stray, looks at how strays in Istanbul live and interact with a community who looks out for them. Anastasia Stellato is the Principal Investigator at Texas Tech University’s Human-Animal Interaction Lab, where she studies animal welfare. After becoming more of a dog person in her personal and professional life, Anastasia wanted to understand better why dogs react and behave in certain ways. More importantly, she wanted to figure out how to help them further. Through her research and the One Welfare approach that takes into account human welfare and environmental context, Anastasia and her PhD students study different situations and learn how to identify causes and solutions most accurately. She believes that we are just scratching the surface of what we can learn about our dogs, how we can be better companions to them, and how to apply our learning to improve our mutual connection. Alexis Devine has been determined over the past five years to grow the types of communication she has with her dogs. It started with her sheepadoodle, Bunny, who she trained to learn 100+ pre-recorded buttons that helped express feelings, wants, and needs. Today, this has grown to include other techniques like gestural commands or pointing. Through this process, Alexis has made sure to try to give as much agency to the dogs as possible when making these decisions. Not forcing choices on them, and instead allowing them to lead the way, also enables you to better understand their true nature by paying close attention to subtle cues. In reserving any judgement and just embracing our dogs for who they are, we can do a better job to help accommodate their needs. Along the way, we’ll likely learn a thing or two about ourselves as well. Since last appearing on Dog Save The People in 2021, Alexis recently released a new book ‘I Am Bunny’ which you can find here: harpercollins.com/products/i-am-bunny-alexis-devine For more information about the episode, guest, and featured social media or links: dogsavethepeople.com/episodes/alexis-devine-2024

EPISODE 2 of our new DOG PARKOLOGY narrative series: Guided Play is a learning approach borrowed from child education that may be applied to dogs, too. It involves ongoing observation and interaction to understand the subject's needs and preferences. EPISODE 1 of our new DOG PARKOLOGY narrative series: Many dog parks today still resemble the traditional fenced-in spaces established almost 50 years ago. However, our understanding of how dogs think and the number of dogs in American households have grown considerably in the last few decades. Humans have also become increasingly isolated due to the usage of digital technologies and the decline of public spaces for real-life interactions. Through it all, dog parks remain one of the few enduring third places that attract all types of people. It’s more important than ever to build out from the dog park paradigm, to strengthen community ties and raise appreciation for the beauty of nature. His new book, What It Takes to Save a Life: A Veterinarian's Quest for Healing and Hope , gives first-hand insights into the special dynamics of the relationship that he’s observed over his years in the field – and why the bond of the unhoused and their dogs can be stronger than anyone else. Antonia Bruce is a UK-based artist who has worked across many mediums over the years, including drawing and painting. When she was faced with having to stay off her feet for a while due to a medical issue, two special dogs came into her life. Hal and Isla were a pair of fox hounds, who were not easy to train. But as Antonia started to slowly walk again as the puppies were learning to, they kept ramping up activity together – eventually both reaching normal levels. In addition to motivating her on a physical and mental side, the fox hound breed became a subject of artistic inspiration for Antonia in her drawings. Richard Mercer facilitates a pet loss support group for the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, where he helps those working through their grief. Through his time working with those struggling to process and move forward, Richard has learned how to guide people along their journey. He realizes and stresses that everyone heals differently, and on varying timelines. Certain practices, however, can typically be beneficial for most – such as looking at how we frame the memories of our dogs for the past and future. These pet loss support groups can also provide a crucial sense of community when people can feel alone. Margot Guralnick works as the Architecture and Interiors Editor at Remodelista for her day job, but she also discovered a personal artistic outlet through Enrique, her dog. As they would go for their walks in the neighborhood of The Bronx, and being forced to go at a slower pace due to constant sniffing, Margot started to see her surroundings in a new way and find little pieces of nature she thought were beautiful. When getting home, she would transform these into artistic collages to showcase her finds. This became Dog Walk Diary, her ongoing series that she shares on Instagram with the world. Along the way, not only did she find a new love for nature, but she finally understood how transformative dogs can be. Elli Frank is the Founder of Mr. Bones & Co, a nonprofit named in honor of her late dog, which focuses on helping out with more difficult dog rescue situations and in quality over quantity. A former guest on the show a few years ago, Elli recently set out on the first leg of the Tin Can Kennel Tour, where she listed her farm upstate for sale, got an airstream, and traveled across the U.S. with her own dogs. Along the way, they would stop at different rescue shelters for Elli to learn about their process, see how she could help any dogs they have, and figure out how to spread these ideas to the rescue community at large. They also stopped at national parks and Elli discovered a new perspective on what “home” really means to her. Sheryl Dunleavy is the Founder of The Ann Parke Collection, an antique business focused mainly on dogs. The lineage of the items, particularly some like Staffordshire ceramic dogs, dates back all the way to the mid-1800s and can be traced to Queen Victoria. Prior to her reign, dogs had just been looked at as working animals. But Victoria, whose main childhood companion was a King Charles Spaniel named Dash, modeled a kinder, loving acceptance of her dog to society. When she became Queen, Victoria showed the public how dogs could be part of your home, your family, and that they should be treated properly. The public perception changed, spurring a dramatic shift around the domestication and artistic documentation of dogs. Today, Sheryl tries to honor Victoria's legacy – and how special it is to capture dogs through art – in her own collection of antiques. Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist and book author Ed Yong's latest book, An Immense World, looks at the different ways animals experience the world from a sensory level. While Ed was in the midst of writing about this topic, a canine companion came into his life (for the first time ever), and gave him new insights into his work. Raising his corgi, named Typo, allowed him to reflect daily about what his own dog might be feeling, and leaned into these thoughts with curiosity and empathy which enriched his life, reinforced his book research and made him feel closer to nature, and the planet in a more profound way. Rachel Herman founded the PAWS NY nonprofit in 2008 to help provide crucial everyday pet care services to New York City residents in need. The non-profit organization recognizes the importance for dogs to stay with their loving pet parents, keeping animals out of shelters. This is done by supporting vulnerable groups dealing with obstacles such as health issues or financial hardships with dog walking, veterinary care, and food. This way, their clients stay happy together with their pets. The PAWS NY volunteers also bond with clients over their pets and provide a vital human connection, too. Stay tuned for the ending, where a PAWS client named Joseph Paul speaks to how he has been able to stay with his dog Bonnie and provide valuable company to each other. As we pass the two-year mark of the pandemic, we thought it would be good to bring back one of the guests we interviewed in our office before everything shut down. You may know her great illustrations that feature dogs, but it's her journey from a fear of dogs to a special connection that makes her work even more interesting. Maira Kalman is an Israeli-born American illustrator, writer, artist, and designer. She has written and illustrated eighteen children’s books and is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, including creating several covers for the magazine that you may have seen before. After initially being afraid of dogs from a young age, Maira eventually had a change of heart and opened up her world to dogs. She realized how much dogs have to teach us, how they’re natural comedians, and how they make us better as people. Returning back to everyday, regular life situations was not an easy transition. It took a while for Robert to realize he couldn't do this alone. And while he tried therapy and other methods of treatment, there was still something missing. That all changed once his service dog, Blue, came into his life. He helped Robert to go out in public again comfortably, temper his night terrors, and be in the right space to write his new book, Stewards of Humanity. Dr. Chris Blazina is a licensed psychologist and author who specializes in male psychology. He came to recognize the importance of animal companions in the lives of men, especially dogs. While the term “Man’s Best Friend” has been around for centuries, we may not be fully aware how important dogs were to many well-known historic figures. In his new book, Dr. Blazina discovered that men such as Charles Darwin or Sigmond Freud had significant bonds with their dogs that brought them peace at later times of their lives when they didn't find that in fellow humans. Jake Windell is an LA county firefighter who has a therapy dog, named Echo, who he brought into his fire station to help make a difference in the ongoing mental health crisis of the fire world. Firefighters are often seen as a tough group, where it can be sometimes hard to break down emotional walls. They risk their lives daily to save others and 1-in-5 firefighters actually suffer from post-traumatic stress or cumulative stress injuries (and even that is underreported, as it’s still not common to report this type of injury). However, through the Peer Support Team that Jake is involved with, they are trying to make actionable changes to address mental health. One of the successful efforts so far has been with Echo, where having a dog around provides comfort to the firefighters and allows them to feel more comfortable to talk about how they may be handling emotional distress. This is a special episode of Dog Save The People with two guests from the same organization. First up is Nathaniel Fields, the CEO of the Urban Resource Institute (URI). It’s a nonprofit organization that has done crucial work in the New York City community for 40 years now – including the development in the past decade of People and Animals Living Safely (PALS) program under URI. The creation of PALS in 2013 made it the first pet-friendly domestic violence shelter in NYC. Second up in the episode is Danielle Emery, the Director of PALS. Today, it serves as an important and safe place for dog-owners suffering from domestic violence to be able to escape to and stay together with their dogs, who play a crucial and important role as part of their family in the healing process. - SOCIAL MEDIA - Website - https://www.dogsavethepeople.com - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/dogsavethepeople - Twitter - https://twitter.com/dogsavetheppl - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/dogsavethepeople - FEATURED LINKS - Urban Resource Institute (URI) website - https://www.urinyc.org - Urban Resource Institute (URI) on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/uri_nyc - Urban Resource Institute (URI) on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/URINYC - Urban Resource Institute (URI) on Twitter - https://twitter.com/URI_NYC - People and Animals Living Safely (PALS) - https://www.urinyc.org/uripals

Winnie Au is a photographer based in Brooklyn, NY, who has found a muse in dogs throughout her career. She specializes in creating poignant and playful editorial dog photos. After her own dog, Tartine, received a cancer diagnosis, she pursued a long, traumatic, and expensive treatment plan that ultimately could not save her pet. This experience inspired Winnie to partner with a non-profit for a photo series to raise awareness for those who need financial assistance for medical bills of their dogs. The photo series, Cone of Shame , also flips the negative stigma of dogs wearing cones around their heads and presents them in an artistic, positive, and playful light. The eye-catching photos helped get attention for Animal Haven's Recovery Road Fund, which helps take away the burden of choice based on affordability for your dog’s care. - SOCIAL MEDIA - Website - https://www.dogsavethepeople.com - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/dogsavethepeople - Twitter - https://twitter.com/dogsavetheppl - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/dogsavethepeople - FEATURED LINKS - Winnie Au’s website - https://www.winniewow.com - Winnie Au on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/winniewow - Winnie Au’s dog, Clementine, on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/clemclemthebasset - Winnie Au on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/winnieauphotography - “Cone of Shame” photo series - https://www.winniewow.com/coneofshame - Canine Chronicles book - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coneofshame/canine-chronicles - Animal Haven's Recovery Road Fund - https://animalhaven.org/support

Cara Zelas is an early childhood teacher. While her dog, Little Dude, has changed her life in several ways – she's not the only one he's impacted. After training him to be a therapy dog through the Good Dog Foundation, they connected her with hospitals and schools to visit children and adults dealing with the trauma of disease, disability, and disaster. Little Dude provided them a level of comfort and relief during their hard times. Seeing that impact inspired Cara to bring Little Dude into more classrooms and use a dog, which kids always love, as a way to teach kids about kindness, empathy, and more. That our actions matter and even one little thing can make a big difference. She was inspired to write a set of curriculum and books around these findings and lessons, which she also shares online for parents (and other teachers) to be able to use for learning with their own kids – which are especially helpful when parents are trying to work on educational activities with their kids at home. He has also worked on several book projects exploring that relationship as well, including topics like shelter workers and HIV-diagnosed individuals – and the relationship all of these different people have with dogs. Marika Meeks is an entrepreneur, wife, and mom who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 41. Unsure of survival, she made it through and found her joy and purpose again after her dog Stella came into her life. Now, she’s made it her mission to give a second chance to other dogs, just like she was blessed with. Marika is doing this through her own non-profit, named Incredibull Stella. At a time of professional crossroads, Mark Imhof decided to go to grooming school after realizing with his own rescue dog how much difference a cleaning had made. He started volunteering at shelters around New York City, grooming hundreds of dogs over time. Not only did it make a big difference on the dogs being rescued (those groomed would often instantly get adopted), but it also lifted the dogs spirits themselves and gave them confidence. After becoming known as “The Dog Guy” around the city, he ended up starting The Dog Guy Foundation, a non-profit organization where he now has a team of people where they all go do groomings at different places in New York City and help dogs get a fresh start. Timothy Braun is a Professor at St. Edwards University, where he primarily focuses on teaching playwriting and screenwriting. While he used to travel around the country as a playwright, getting his dog Dusty led him to becoming more grounded as a person and eventually staying in one place (Austin, Texas). With his furry sidekick, he learned the power of growing more stable in his routine. They even did so much nonprofit work for the local community that the Mayor of Austin named a day of the year after Dusty after he recently passed away. Dusty instilled a permanent shift in Tim’s actions and outlook, taming him in the best way possible and preparing him for the next chapter of his life, a marriage, that ended up happening right after Dusty left – but was a symbol and reminder for passing the torch to Tim’s new wife, and that his spirit will live on. Austin Moss is the owner of Zoë, the first emotional support dog on an NFL team. Working for the San Francisco 49ers as their Director of Player Engagement, Austin’s job is to help the team’s players across the board. Zoë is a French bulldog who has become the team’s official emotional support dog, and has helped Austin in his role. Players spends time with Zoë before and after games, between practices, and any windows of time they may have. She provides a valuable escape from the rough trials and tribulations of the football field, and has allowed the players to not only feel joy from hanging out with her, but also be more vulnerable and open about what they may be going through. Whether consciously or subconsciously, stopping by Austin’s office to see Zoë gives players a reason to come by more often and catch up about what’s on their mind. Yorkies may be be small dogs, but they can have big impacts. Ivy Higa’s own “Brooklyn aka Mr. Aloha” is prime example. After going through a tough time and breakup, Ivy got Brooklyn – but little did she know how things would change. Through the eyes she looked at him, Ivy began to look inside herself. She realized how she wasn’t treating herself and her value with enough respect, and that the way she felt Brooklyn needed to be treated (with love and respect) was the way she deserved to be treated, too. And if you’re wondering where the “Mr. Aloha” part of his name comes from, that’s because Ivy is originally from Hawaii. Although, as you can guess, now calls Brooklyn home (in more ways than one).
