Can women really have it all? And what does that even mean? In this powerful episode, I sit down with Dr. Giselle Goodwin—author, researcher, and expert on women’s work and wellbeing—to explore this question and dive in to what it means for moms to achieve true happiness. Dr. Goodwin shares insights from her book "Can Women Really Have It All? A Happiness Handbook for Working Mothers" , and opens up about her own journey from feminist ideals to the complex realities of balancing career, motherhood, and personal fulfillment. Dr. Goodwin and I talk about: 📈 The evolving (and still unrealistic) societal expectations placed on mothers 💼 Why flexible work, better childcare, and equitable parental leave matter for everyone ⚖️ The emotional load of motherhood 😃Happiness is a mix of pleasure and purpose 💝Practical self-care strategies for busy moms—like bare minimums, micro-joys, and guilt-free delegation A little about our guest: Dr. Giselle Goodwin grew up in Canada and now lives in Cheshire, England with her husband and two teenage daughters. Over the course of a 25-year career, she co-founded, grew and successfully sold three businesses: two in healthcare and one in recruitment. Alongside this, Dr. Goodwin navigated countless children’s birthday parties, sports events, parent-teacher meetings and dentist appointments. While juggling her career and family life, she often felt like she was failing on all fronts. Driven by a desire to find a better way – not just for herself but for her children – Dr. Goodwin returned to university to explore the elusive issue of women’s work-life balance. In 2022, she completed a PhD on women, work and well-being, and her first book is the culmination of that research. Dr. Giselle Goodwin is passionately interested in all causes relating to equality and social justice. Through her twenties she abused alcohol and drugs until she hit rock bottom, when she left her home of Seattle and to live in a zen monastery for a month and then hike the entire Appalachian Trail. After she finished, Jocelyn moved to Boulder, Colorado to become a massage therapist. This is when her healing journey truly began. Jocelyn learned about the power of the mind-body connection. I'm going through a divorce, and this week I'm joined by divorce coach Jess Evans to talk all things co-parenting, identity, and dating after divorce. Basically, I'm asking all the questions I want to know the answers to as I navigate my own separation in the hopes that this conversation can help any other mom out there who might be going through the same thing! In the episode, Jess and I talk about: Navigvating co-parenting and letting go of control Stigmas around being divorced Breaking marital cycles of co-dependency Reestablishing your identity after divorce Knowing when it's time to start dating again Tips for dating after divorce A little about our guest: Jess is a single mom of two, certified divorce and co-parenting coach at Moms Moving On. She has worked alongside Michelle Dempsey-Multack for years and takes a child centered approach to co-parenting. Jess was a SAHM while going through her divorce in 2018 and the thought of spending time away from her kids broke her heart. She quickly learned that it isn’t always about the quantity of time spent with her kids, rather the quality. She and her children live in Wisconsin and love everything the Midwest has to offer. As a family, they enjoy watching football, playing golf, getting outside and creating fun memories together. When Jess is not with her kids, she is spending time with her new partner, golfing and enjoying time with her girlfriends. As a child of divorce who has no relationship with her father, Jess wanted to ensure her children grew up having a strong relationship with both of their parents. As a coach, Jess is passionate about empowering her clients and helping them move on emotionally after the divorce is final. She works closely with her clients to help them find new ways to fill their cup as they enter the world of co-parenting. She also enjoys working with clients to create a child-centered parenting plan that is fine tuned to avoid any grey area. You may want to be a conscious parent, but without healing your inner child it can be hard (impossible, even). Inner child healing expert Lavinia Brown is joining the podcast to talk about the power of working on our inner child in order to parent the way we actually want! Whether or not to have kids is a very personal decision - and sometimes one that isn't completely in the control of each individual. Recently, I was asked on Instagram what I would say to a woman who was on the fence about their own decision to have children or not, and this episode is my response. But this episode isn't only for women who are childless at this point - I am speaking to the societal expectations of all women, and understanding the ways our culture links womanhood and motherhood can be beneficial to current mothers as well. Good girl conditioning starts so early for most of us - if you've ever identified as a people-pleaser or perfectionist, chances are you are in this boat. This week, empowerment coach Carley Weissert is joining us to uncover how this pervasive conditioning happens and the impacts it can have through our lives, plus some ways we can start to break free from the inauthenticity it brings. In the episode Carley and I talk about: The umbrella of good girl conditioning, including perfectionism and people-pleasing How Carley realized her perfect-on-paper life wasn't actually what she wanted The power of pausing Motherhood as a motivator to address good girl conditioning How inner-child healing can help us align to what we actually desire Learning when to say yes and when to say no A little about our guest: Carley Weissert is an empowerment coach on a mission to help women reconnect to their authentic selves and create lives they can’t get enough of. Just a few years ago, Carley had the perfect life on paper. And yet despite appearing to have it all, she felt like something was missing—a symptom of ignoring her inner voice for years. Around the start of the pandemic, she dove into feminine work, embracing play, exploring her sexuality, and finding her voice. This journey of self-discovery led Carley to flip her life upside down and do one of the scariest things she'd ever done—end her marriage. Flash forward to now, Carley is in a fulfilling relationship, nourished by deep sisterhood connections, and unapologetically prioritize self-care. Coaching is Carley's passion because she understands the silent struggles of women who feel lost or stuck—she's been there! Carley blends a variety of tools ranging from inner child work to somatic emotional release to guide clients toward their true selves. She combine methods she's learned with her own playful energy and deep understanding of what it feels like to be an actress in your own life. In Carley's free time, she enjoys staying active, exploring farmers markets, and having Taylor Swift dance parties with her two little girls! There's been a push over the last few years to pull away from "hot mess mom" culture, because moms don't have to be sacrificing themselves and showing up disheveled and drained to be considered "good enough." And I'm 100% on board with that. I am a huge proponent of moms prioritizing and taking care of themselves, and completely do not support messages that say otherwise. But here's the thing, I've always been a "hot mess," and becoming mother definitely did not make that less true. If anything, having kids has made getting my sh*t together even more of a challenge. And so here and now, I'm reclaiming the title "hot mess," because showing up as a bit of a mess does not mean I'm not caring for myself. And if you feel the same about yourself, this episode is for you! If you found this episode valuable, share it with other moms in your life. Hannah Olson is redefining motherhood, and while her take may be hard to wrap your head around at first, it's actually quite simple. What she's saying is that motherhood is a relationship, and caregiving is a job - all those messages we get about laundry, vacuuming, even changing diapers and driving the kids to practice being "mom tasks," it's B.S. Yes, many moms are the primary caregiver to their children, and that is amazing! But motherhood is about the relationship we share with our children, and that is the big difference. In this episode, Hannah and I talk about: Separating the relationship of motherhood from the job of caregiving How equating motherhood to caregiving work leads to mom guilt Seeing motherhood as more than 18 years of caregiving The value of caregiving, monetary and otherwise Why moms deserve to have a conversation about working out of the home, even if it means paying more for childcare A little about our guest: Hannah Olson loves creating, coaching, and connecting. She spends her time attempting to master sourdough, forgetting to water $30 Ikea plants, mishearing song lyrics, and hanging out with her husband and six children. Hannah founded Redefining Motherhood in 2021 to help women reduce mom guilt and experience more joy, by coaching them to see the difference between the job of caregiving and the relationship of motherhood. She is also the host of a (sometimes) weekly podcast, Rantish, where she discusses topics she feels strongly about like Pretzel Jello Salad, Physical Therapy for pelvic floor, and current Instagram trends. She also loves to have guests on the show and hopes to foster a community of belonging and connection for lonely women everywhere. Maternal ambivalence is an “experience shared variously by all mothers in which loving and hating feelings for their children exist side by side,” according to psychotherapist Rozsika Parker. These complex, often contradictory feelings mothers so often feel are completely normal - especially in the context we are all currently raising children in. And yet for so many mothers, there is guilt and shame surrounding not always feeling “positive” or acceptable emotions about our role or our children. So let’s talk about it. The goal of this week’s episode is to normalize normal emotions, and let you know that if you feel anger, grief, and frustration as a mother - all while loving your kids deeply - you are not alone. What does it mean to be a good mom? Society has created this image of what it means to be "good" in the role, and it can be summed up through The Perfect Mother Myth. So this week, I am unpacking the expectations we are held to under this social construct with the intention of bringing awareness to the absurdity of what is expected of mothers and why we have to check ourselves when it comes to the standards we are holding ourselves to. I'm sharing The Perfect Mother Myth as it has been discussed through my work with Motherhood Studies Sociologist Dr. Sophie Brock, and also presenting Professor Andrea O'Reilly's 8 Rules of Good Mothering to illustrate just how intense the unspoken rules for mothers are. This isn't just my experience - the myth of the perfect mother is based on real research of what is expected of moms. Can you relate? For so many moms, the idea of prioritizing themselves is completely guilt-inducing. It feels like a proposition to abandon their kids' needs, and in turn is completely unaligned with their values. In this episode, I'm exploring what it actually means to prioritize our own well-being and care, and helping you see how you can do just that without the guilt. Because here's the thing: We all know that securing our kids' safety and wellbeing will underlie all that we do. But if we don't prioritize our own care, it just won't happen. Too many other things are vying for our time and attention. Tune in to learn how you can ensure your needs are getting met, and how everyone else will benefit, too! Working mothers are expected to work like they don't have kids, and parent like they don't have jobs. She began a journey of self discovery and eventually made the decision to step away from her company. As a coach, she now helps women break free of the inertia of their lives and the weight of other people’s expectations to enjoy this one and only precious life we’ve been given. It's a new year, which means it's the perfect time to examine whether you are living life on your own terms, or to someone else's (or society's) standards. This week I am joined by the unapologetic Michele Johnston, who left behind a life of coforming to strict ideals to live life as her authentic self - and she is here to help you do the same! In the episode, Michele and I talk about: How narratives we grow up with can contribute to living out of alignment What it means to be unapologetically yourself The connection between self-care, self-love, and self-discovery Why we may outgrow people in the process of living unapologetically The impacts of living vulnerably and authentically on our children as they grow and become adults A little about our guest: Michele Johnston is the powerhouse behind Fiercely Authentic Coaching. "Enjoy every moment!" We've all heard it before. And yet let's be real, not every moment of motherhood (or life for that matter) is enjoyable. And when we are led to believe that not enjoying it all means we are doing something wrong, the impact can be detrimental. So this week, I am counteracting the narrative that we should enjoy every moment, and instead letting you know it's OK (and totally normal) to experience complex human feelings. My goal, is to help you feel more self-compassionate through it all. If you found this episode valuable, share it with other moms in your life. This week I am getting into labels - "working mom," "stay-at-home mom," everything in between - not because these labels are inherently bad, but because we can inadvertedly make them mean something about our identity and self-worth. In fact, that is exactly what happened to me when I left my teaching job to run my business from home. There are all these narratives out there about what it means to be a working mom or stay-at-home mom, and with that it can be complicated to navigate what you actually want in life and motherhood. Download your free Aligned Motherhood workbook mentioned in this episode to start getting clear on your values and creating your fulfilled motherhood.
