With an expansion draft for the W coming up, and NBA trades making news, Liz and Karen deliver some spicy astrological perspectives on building team chemistry. But first: Playoff basketball is special, and Liz and Karen are LIVING for the excitement of these high-caliber WNBA semifinals! Once again Liz breaks down the box score and goes deeper into the +/- category for individual players. The Golden State Valkyries will soon have players. (The expansion draft is scheduled for December 6th). Karen explains the expansion draft rules, and names the players she’d recommend for potential draft picks. Overall, things can get messy because current teams can only protect 6 players from the draft; and the head coaching job is a chance for the WNBA to do better! The NBA Media Days offered no shortage of drama and fun. The ladies discuss the impact, and astrological signs, of the blockbuster trade with the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves that included Karl Anthony Towns to the Knicks for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo and a first draft pick from the Detroit Pistons. Lastly, the Hoops come off when Liz takes a stand for Fantasy League Commissioners, and Karen slams the WNBA for a slow response to protect players against threats. Plus, The ladies also choose the first listener to take one of the two spots available in the Hoops Off NBA Fantasy league. Liz and Karen's WNBA Playoff breakdown is coming in fast and hot this week. They take a look at stats (believe it or not!) and discuss how the matches are stacking up. Players are racking double-doubles and triple-doubles during these playoffs, but there are tweaks Liz and Karen would like to see some of the teams make. Both are excited about A'Ja Wilson's unanimous MVP distinction. They highlight her 2024 accomplishments, and recount the impressive way she received the MVP news. Liz wants us to keep an eye on Raj Sports, who, in addition to owning the Sacramento Kings, now own two professional women’s sports teams in Portland (the yet-to-be-named WNBA Portland franchise, and the NSWL Portland Thorns). Karen breaks down Kelsey Plum’s style, as well as the lack of style in the newly rumored NBA City Edition Jerseys. A farewell to Adrian Wojnarowski, who dropped his final Woj Bomb via social media, and reflections on his legacy. And, finally, podcast listener Don, takes his hoops off with Liz and Karen! The Paris Olympics keep on giving! Liz and Karen have got the recaps you need (from romance rumors to unforgettable wins) in order to memorialize this year's epic Games. In addition to this Olympics being one of record-setting medal numbers for women, we saw baller A'ja Wilson getting her MVP, Steph Curry finally getting a gold medal, and other moments that had us happily exhausted. Liz and Karen also lay out and pump up key dates around the WNBA and NBA this year, and even stake some bets around NBA Christmas Day schedules. On the other side of Olympic glory comes more lawsuits, many that put women in sports up against the WNBA, the IOC and the cyberbullies. We'll keep our eyes on those. This week Liz gets some relief knowing her Los Angeles Lakers have ended their playoff run. And while others are already speculating about LeBron James' future with the Lakers, she is going to sit back with Karen and start looking ahead to the 2024 WNBA season, which kicks off on May 14th. In the NBA analysis this week, the anticipation meter cranks up a notch as Liz and Karen discuss the new era for the league, which includes rising stars Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, and Shai Gilgious-Alexander and his whole OKC squad. Transition from the old to the new is not always easy, but Liz and Karen feel the excitement. Speaking of transitions, Candace Parker announced, via Instagram, her retirement from the WNBA after 16 impactful seasons on and off the court. Liz and Karen process this startling news and give the GOAT Candace Parker all the flowers. They also discuss 2024 Hall of Fame inductees and reflect on Diana Taurasi calling the new fans "a little too sensitive." And, as always, L. and K. take their hoops off. This week is one Mega Millions Hoops Off as Liz and Karen deep dive into the money bags of the WNBA and beyond. They discuss the investment to women's sports, including Alexis Ohanian supporting franchise growth of The Sports Bra, an iconic Portland, OR, sports-viewing destination, plus the 776 Women’s-Only Track Invitational with the biggest purse in the history of that sport. Also discussed: a breakdown of who gets WNBA signature shoes and who doesn’t, including A'ja Wilson, whose on-the-court accolades and off-the-court accomplishments should make her a shoe-in for a featured piece of footwear. The WNBA had its moment this week with the 2024 draft class, talk of expansion, and the outrage sparked by number one draft pick Caitlin Clark's rookie salary. Liz and Karen recap the first seven picks of the first round of draftees in the 2024 WNBA draft. They discuss the storylines around Kamilla Cardoso's journey from Brazil at 15 to the WNBA 2nd round pick, Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso going from rivals to team mates for the Chicago Sky, and Rickea Jackson being dubbed a "ready made baller" as the second pick for the Los Angeles Sparks. They also breakdown some of the fashions and fashion brands that were worn by the rookie players on the Orange carpet, includcing Caitlin Clark being the first draftee in both WNBA and NBA to be dressed by Prada, and Alissa Pili's paying tribute to her Samoan-American heritage with the tribal symbols.
