Are you a nurse curious about the experiences of other nurses? For 36 years, I have only known the Peds/NICU realm but I am intrigued by the roles of nurse researchers, educators, and entrepreneurs. Through conversations with nurses from various specialties, I aim to bring you valuable insights into their lives. At the end of each episode we play the five-minute snippet, just five minutes of fun as we peek into the 'off-duty' lives of my guests! Listen as we explore the nursing profession, one conversation at a time.

Send us a text This week, I had the pleasure of catching up with a returning guest, the OG Nursepreneur, Farah Laurent . Since our last conversation over two years ago, she has been achieving remarkable success. Not only does Farah hold six board certifications, but she has also earned a doctorate in nursing. One exciting development is that Farah hosted her first nursing conference titled “Nurses Making Money Moves.” By the time this episode airs, the conference will have already taken place and, I’m sure, been a huge success. Good news for future fans— Farah plans to make this conference an annual gathering. And that title sounds familiar, it is also the name of her new book . It feels like Farah is everywhere, doing everything. Whether you catch her on LinkedIn Live or listen to her podcast, The Nursing Dose with Farah, her energy is undeniable. She is truly dedicated to helping nurses elevate their careers. In the five-minute snippet: DJ Farah is setting fire to the dance floor. Send us a text In the heart of northern New Zealand, nestled between rolling hills and lush green valleys, lay Heart Place Hospital , a beacon of innovation in the world of healthcare. Founded by Jacqui O'Connor, a Registered Nurse with three decades of experience, this unique wellness charity is unlike any hospital seen before. After her own dismantling and rebuilding, Jacqui has devoted her life to the intricacies of mental well-being and integrative health, believing that true healing goes beyond the limits of conventional medicine. Send us a text What can I say about Rachell Dumas ? Or perhaps, what can't I say about her? Rachell is an extraordinary nurse with a powerful story of pregnancy loss that will leave you both in tears and shaking your head in disbelief. After experiencing the loss of nine pregnancies, Rachell founded the nonprofit organization “A Light After Nine.” This organization aims to provide families navigating infertility, pregnancy loss, and maternal trauma with the emotional, financial, and mental health resources they need. In true "nurse" fashion, Rachell works tirelessly to raise awareness and advocate for equitable maternal healthcare. Through Rachell, I learned about maternal palliative care, which is not only for mothers who are dying but is also essential for those experiencing high-risk pregnancies. Considering that 30% of pregnancies end in loss, this approach is a brilliant way to support this community. You may have heard the quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Rachell embodies the light she wishes to see in the world. Send us a text This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with NICU mom and author, Jennifer Bernardo. Jennifer gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl—at just 26 weeks gestation. Her book, Week 26 , is a firsthand account of their lives in the NICU and beyond. Jennifer’s journey began with a distressing wake-up call: she was hemorrhaging. Rushed to the hospital, she underwent an emergency C-section, where she delivered her son, weighing just two pounds, followed by her even smaller daughter, weighing one pound and eleven ounces. What followed was a four-and-a-half-month rollercoaster ride in the NICU. Jennifer perfectly described the experience as being "two steps forward and one step back." At times, our conversation was raw emotion. No parent wants to describe the first time they meet their child as "traumatic," yet Jennifer bravely did so. But she also recounted joyful moments, such as skin-to-skin holding and visits from their sibling. In her book, Jennifer emphasizes that the NICU journey is truly a family affair and includes reflections from her husband's and daughter's perspectives. As Jennifer’s story illustrates, attitude is everything. Week 26 is a story of heartbreak and hope, and through her writing, Jennifer shows us that when your world turns dark, you must look for, and be the light. Send us a text This week, I had the great pleasure of speaking with my friend and colleague, Dr. David Borge. David is an OB/GYN who has retired from the traditional 9-to-5 work schedule and now enjoys using his expertise in Saipan and, more recently, Panama, his country of birth. As the son of missionaries, David spent his early years with his five siblings in Panama, France, Egypt, and Madagascar. His father, a physician, often brought young David to the hospital, where he could round on patients and observe surgeries. These experiences profoundly enriched his life, fueled his passion for service, and motivated him to become a physician. David’s Next Adventure Travel Blog chronicles his work with the Floating Doctors organization. You’ll read the stories of his time in Saipan, treating women with cancer, birth defects, and high-risk pregnancies—compounded by a lack of medical support—which will make you appreciate life here in the United States. Although he hasn't yet written about his recent trip to Panama to establish a medical clinic with midwives, I am eagerly anticipating his stories. After delivering thousands of babies in eight countries, David has discovered that kindness, compassion, and competence resonate across cultures and are unified by our common humanity. Prepare yourself for emotional conversation filled with wonder, laughter and tears with an exceptional human. In the five-minute snippet: Well, they are a travel necessity. Here is David Borge. Terrified of facing a Board of Registered Nursing investigation? Maggie's your insider. Equally terrified of being deposed? She literally wrote the book on it. Do you see where I’m going here? Send us a text My guest this week, Joseph Harrison , is a nurse practitioner who facilitates the creation of independent practices for other nurse practitioners through his company, Avail Health . Per his LinkedIn profile, Joseph states, “Weaving together many threads to help realize the quintuple aim of healthcare.” To be honest, I was unaware of this ambitious initiative before speaking with him, but he clearly and succinctly explained both our current successes and the areas where improvements can be made. I found it interesting to learn that before becoming a nurse practitioner, Joseph worked in the hospitality industry as a server and a teacher. Perhaps it's this background that enables him to be such an exceptional nurse practitioner. He forms personal connections with his patients, allowing them to take an active role in their care. I would also argue that this ability contributes to his success as an entrepreneur. Nurse practitioners often express a desire to provide excellent, person-centered care while also seeking time and financial freedom. Send us a text This week my guest is Sachin Chauhan , the founder and CEO of An Extra M . This India-based organization has provided education and training to over 50,000 nurses and nursing students worldwide, focusing on the essential soft skills needed for effective interpersonal relationships with both patients and colleagues. You may wonder, what are soft skills? Soft skills include critical thinking, time management, teamwork, leadership and emotional intelligence, among others. While these skills are beneficial in all professions, they are particularly crucial for nurses. Our work often involves interacting with individuals who may be experiencing some of the most challenging moments of their lives. And nurses don't work in silos. They are vital members of a multidisciplinary team. Therefore, your team's success depends on soft skills. I am truly inspired by Sachin's story about the birth of An Extra M , and I know once you hear it, you will be too. In the five minute snippet: Dance party in Sachin's kitchen! Send us a text Imagine being a sick or injured child entering the healthcare system and being approached by nurses and doctors wielding strange objects, sharp needles, and unpleasant medications. Now picture being the parent of that child, who naturally wants to protect and advocate but lacks the health literacy to comprehend what is happening. Whether parent or child, you would likely be terrified and would want someone like Nurse Deon on your side. Fortunately, there is Deon Huffman , a pediatric nurse with 10 years of experience dedicated to educating both parents and children. He helps them understand common procedures in a clear and approachable manner, never condescending. Deon’s YouTube videos cover a variety of topics, including healthy eating for kids, understanding emotions, vital signs, and the MRI machine. His trips to the zoo are both educational and entertaining. Nurse Deon doesn’t work alone; his team includes physicians, child life specialists, and even puppets. Together, they create an evidence-based educational broadcast that rivals any popular children’s programming. Research shows that when parents and children are educated, their anxiety levels decrease which makes our job as healthcare professionals easier and more enjoyable, creating a win-win situation for everyone involved. Send us a text Sleep. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders , quality sleep is as essential to survival as food and water. It is crucial for forming and maintaining the neural pathways in your brain that allow you to learn and create new memories. Lack of sleep can make it harder to concentrate and respond quickly. Now, imagine being a healthcare professional—a nurse, physician, or surgical technician—who is also the parent of a child who struggles to sleep and prevents anyone else in the house from getting rest. Yet your job requires you to make critical decisions and perform complex tasks while being chronically sleep-deprived, which can have catastrophic consequences. Enter Lacy Hess , a nurse entrepreneur who created Lacy’s Lullabies , a sleep consulting business aimed at helping parents and children achieve the restful sleep they need. As a certified pediatric sleep consultant, Lacy assists parents in developing safe sleep plans designed to promote sleep independence. With 13 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, a certification in Emergency Nursing, and a Master’s degree in Education, Lacy brings a wealth of knowledge and credibility to her practice. Her clients consistently provide rave reviews. If you're a nurse considering a change in specialty or looking to start a side hustle, sleep consulting could be an ideal option. This field leverages many skills that nurses excel at, including flexibility, time management, prioritization, and the ability to provide evidence-based education. Send us a text Imagine for a moment if Angie Gray were a recipe. She would be equal parts professionalism, inspiration, and compassion, with just a pinch of badassery thrown in. But she is not a recipe. She is a thought leader, a nurse coach, a keynote speaker, and she has the challenging task of training C-suite executives to bridge the gap between them and the healthcare professionals on the front lines. Angie and I are soul sisters of a sort: we love sporting our rose-colored glasses, which is not a negative. We are not blind to the dirty side of nursing: the bullying, burnout, staffing, and wage inequity. Rather, we choose to see the positives and to be the change we wish to see in the profession. Our discussion was filled with wisdom and insights about why our profession is both great and yet struggling. Angie’s hashtag, #lovingdisruption, is gaining popularity and resonance, and I can’t wait for you to hear her explanation. My prediction? It’s going viral. Send us a text Beth Sanford is known as the "Sunshine Nurse" for two reasons. First, she is a doctorally-prepared nurse who has conducted extensive research on the importance of vitamin D in improving patient outcomes. Her studies have explored how vitamin D levels affect ICU patients, long-term care residents, and global maternal health. Beth is passionate about addressing vitamin D deficiency in clinical practice, population health, and policy. Did you know that vitamin D is both a nutrient and a hormone essential for nearly every cell in the body? It plays a crucial role in hundreds of processes every day. Deficiencies in vitamin D are now recognized as a risk factor for many chronic diseases, including osteoporosis, impaired cognitive function, various cancers, pregnancy complications, and cardiovascular disease. We explored how low vitamin D levels impact nurses and other healthcare professionals who work night shifts or are exposed to artificial light for over 12 hours a day. Beth compares the effects to pseudodementia, which can slow response times and hinder the ability to make critical decisions. If you are a nurse experiencing profound fatigue, run, don’t walk to get your levels checked! Now, back to why Beth is known as the "Sunshine Nurse" for the second reason. She can literally light up a room. With her beautiful smile, positive outlook, and generous spirit, Beth reminds us all that we could use a little more light in our lives. Send us a text This week I stepped way outside my comfort zone and spoke with Tulare County Fire Chief, Charlie Norman. I can confidently say that many nurses do not fully understand what firefighters do. We often see them in the ambulance bay and in our communities, but do we really take the time to SEE them? Do we know where the budget for fire services comes from? Do we understand how firefighters advance in their ranks? Sadly, do we realize that firefighter deaths by suicide exceed those who die in the line of duty? Charlie addressed these important issues and more. He explained the long and challenging journey of bringing paramedicine to our County, his path to becoming fire chief, and his relationships with city and county officials because as he said, everything in life comes down to relationships. As fire chief, Charlie prioritizes firefighter mental health, recruitment and retention, having a diverse fire crew, and serving the community. Charlie embodies the core values of integrity, respect, loyalty, teamwork, and compassion. He says everything he learned in kindergarten he can apply to life: keep your hands to yourself, be nice to people and if you don’t have anything good to say, keep your mouth closed. And what does he look for in recruits? Character. Yes, they need to be able to pull a hose, bandage a patient, and competently administer medications, but if their character is lacking, they don’t belong in the fire service. I’d say with Charlie in charge, everything will be ok. In the five-minute snippet: my granddaughter’s question answered by the expert. For Charlie's bio, please visit my website (link below). Send us a text Erika Browning is one of the most interesting guests I've had to date. She has a diverse educational background, earning degrees in Spanish, Biology, and Nursing. And the diversity doesn't stop there. Her nursing experience ranges from working in the emergency room to the ICU, from being a travel nurse to a sexual assault nurse examiner, and from a case manager to starting her own business as a Life Care Planner. Erika is truly living the tagline of her podcast, which is "basic nurses doing really cool things." Wait, did I forget to mention she has a podcast? Erika is the host of the Black Sheep Nurse podcast , which is currently on hiatus, meaning now is your chance to binge-listen to all the episodes. It's filled with interviews of nurses doing amazing things with their degrees. I was thrilled to learn she will be resuming production because her interviews are sure to leave you laughing, learning, and inspired. Her newest entrepreneurial venture is all about the fun, which I think might be her middle name. She has recently launched Shop Rebel Nurse , a merch store with quirky and lighthearted items for nurses, including graphic tees, sweatshirts, ball caps, and stickers. And I see a new design in the works that pays homage to her time as a Captain in the Marines! (Did I forget to mention that, too?) Send us a text I jumped at the opportunity to talk to my guest this week, Sallie Jessie. Sallie is an incredible person with a unique perspective! First, she has a niche job: she is a mobile wound care clinic nurse and I loved hearing all about that. She is also a blogger. When she became a wife and mother, she identified a gap in resources for nurses balancing family and career and then took the initiative to create a supportive community through her blog, Bandaids and Bedtime Stories. This is ingenuity at its best. Her ability to blend her professional insights with personal experiences makes her writing relatable, valuable, and inspiring. The topics she covers, from relationship dynamics to parenting challenges, as well as self-care for nurses, are so important, especially in a demanding field. And she brings to light some of the nursing profession’s darkest moments like toxic bullying. There’s even something for those new to the profession: how to choose the right nursing specialty. Though Sallie is just getting started, her journey will resonate with nurses and parents alike. And I can’t wait to see what she does next. Send us a text In my working days, I was a member of my institution’s Bioethics committee. I’m now a retired nurse and continue to serve as a community member. Constantly impressed by this committee’s work, I wanted you to meet two of these brilliant minds, so I recently sat down with Sandra Shadley, a licensed marriage and family therapist and our committee chair, and Dr. Ryan Howard, our hospice and palliative medicine physician. Sandra holds a unique certification: the HEC-C , or certified healthcare ethics consultant and she explained that Bioethics is guided by four principles: respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. Despite the solidity of these principles, bioethical issues are still quite nuanced. That’s all fine and good, but what exactly does a Bioethics team do? They develop and implement policies, educate the hospital community, review research, and, provide consultations with those patients facing end-of-life decisions. The committee consists of various disciplines: social workers, physicians, nurses, critical care leaders, risk management, chaplains, and community members. It's a diverse group with diverse perspectives. Dr. Howard is gifted at having difficult conversations. He approaches patients with curiosity and humility, providing truly patient-centered and individualized end-of-life care. I left this interview feeling joyful. It was inspiring to witness these two individuals, whom I deeply respect, engage in a dialogue about their shared passion for Bioethics. Send us a text Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Kali Dayton . Kali Dayton is an ICU nurse practitioner and like Gandhi, MLK Jr., and Parks, Kali is peacefully protesting the way ICU patients are cared for. Similar to the civil rights advocates before her, Kali fights for the rights of ICU patients. She believes they have the right to limited sedation, early mobilization, open communication, and family participation. Kali was born as a baby nurse into an Awake and Walking ICU in which ventilated patients received little to no sedation, were out of bed walking while intubated, and communicating through whiteboards, all with the crucial support of their families. Then she began traveling to ICUs across the country and found her patients automatically sedated if intubated, enduring long periods of immobilization, and if they were lucky enough to avoid death in the ICU, they were discharged to suffer PTSD and face long periods of rehabilitation. Kali is a self-described ICU revolutionist and is dedicated to educating both clinicians and families through her podcasts, "Walking Home from the ICU" for clinicians, and "Walking You Through the ICU" , which is directed toward patients and families. Through her consulting business, Dayton ICU Consulting , she travels the country visiting ICUs helping them to become awake and walking ICUs. The revolution has begun. Send us a text Pablo Picasso said, “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” Sarah Lorenzini has a life filled with both meaning and purpose. She is a rapid-response nurse who utilizes her knowledge and storytelling skills to educate nurses in various critical care aspects through her popular podcast, Rapid Response RN, which has over 120 episodes. In the podcast, she effectively breaks down complex concepts such as cardiac tamponade, spinal cord ischemia, and serotonin syndrome, all with an exuberance score of 10 out of 10. Sarah's commitment to education extends beyond her podcast as she mentors students, nurses, and allied health professionals in their roles. She believes that saving patients is a team effort, and as a rapid response nurse, she sees herself as there to elevate and support the bedside team. Send us a text Happy Halloween Eve! Today's episode is all about the spooky. A few weeks ago on Instagram, I posted my call to action for your spooky stories and got some great responses! I was looking up the most haunted hospitals in the United States and here's what I found: Linda Vista Community Hospital , located in Boyle Heights, East LA. This hospital is considered one of the most haunted in the country. It closed in 1991 and has been featured in many films, television shows, and music videos. Some say the hospital is haunted by lost spirits, a ghostly doctor, and a little girl laughing and singing. Okay, yeah, that's just creepy. In today's stories, you will hear a couple that have to do with kids and I have a story of my own. Thank you to the four respondents! Sit back, get your candy bowl, put your costume on, and listen to these spooky stories. Happy Halloween!! Thank you for answering the call! Susan J. Send us a text The current state of healthcare, especially under the strain of a pandemic, has put immense pressure on those in the field. Nurses are burning out in record numbers and leaving a profession they used to love. My guest this week, emergency room nurse and author, Jennifer Johnson , is on a mission to bring back the love and it all starts with intuition. Jenn is known as the Intuitive Nurse and after working 16 years in the emergency room, she has honed her intuition, trusting her gut when assessing patients. But she also uses her intuition in another way. She is reaching out to fellow nurses and offering them hope through her book Nursing Intuition: How to Trust Your Gut, Save Your Sanity, and Survive Your Career . Channeling her own experiences and the collective struggles of many makes it profoundly meaningful. The challenges she’s faced and the empathy she has for her colleagues shine through and by sharing her experiences as a Top Critical Thinking Voice on LinkedIn, she’s helping create a sense of community that is desperately needed right now. Send us a text Ebony Thyme does not let grass grow under her feet. Whether traveling for her job as a locum tenen family nurse practitioner or for leisure as a travel host , adventure is her game. As a teenager, Ebony was happily working at a Wendy's drive-thru, but her father urged her to aim higher. Perhaps it was her youthful spirit that made her laugh in the face of challenges or maybe it was her strong determination to see things through once she started them, but she took his advice to heart and became a nurse. As a locum tenen family nurse practitioner, Ebony plays a crucial role, providing extra support to her colleagues at busy Urgent Care clinics across the country. And Ebony is a visionary. During the pandemic, she anticipated changes in patient care and an increased need for advanced practice nurses. She now proudly works as a 1099 contractor , enjoying freedom and flexibility in her job without the heavy tax burden. And she doesn’t keep this secret to herself. Ebony has developed The Locum Tenen Guide, a comprehensive program that has helped over 450 healthcare professionals transition into independent contracting and establish valuable business-to-business relationships within the healthcare industry. Send us a text I don't know when side hustles became a thing but they are officially a thing. Instead of picking up extra shifts, nurses are picking up side hustles. Enter Josh Condado, a certified registered nurse anesthesiologist who co-owns a real estate investing company with his sister Jenn and brother-in-law Colin, also, you guessed it, nurses. Now, the current annual salary for a CRNA can be upwards of $250,000. Why do you need a side hustle if you’re making a quarter of a million dollars a year? For Joshua and many others, it’s freedom. Freedom to work as much or as little as you want. Don’t misunderstand me, Josh loves being a CRNA. He was inspired to become one by his father, an OG CRNA. But early in his nursing career, Josh experienced burnout, motivating him to invest in real estate. By creating a financial backup plan, Josh can focus on doing what he loves, being a CRNA. In his "air quotes", spare time, Josh cohosts the popular Investing RN Podcast, a show dedicated to providing nurses with the knowledge, tools, and inspiration they need to invest their time, money, and relationships wisely. Josh, Jenn, and Colin help nurses take control of their finances and create a future they love. And there’s nothing I love more than nurses helping nurses. Send us a text If you're my age and can remember over 50 years ago, you might recall those lazy Saturday mornings spent watching Schoolhouse Rock. There was a clever cartoon skit called, “I’m Just A Bill” where we’d learn how a bill becomes law. This three-minute video was responsible for teaching an entire generation of kids about Civics. Enter Gilanie De Castro, also known as Citizen Nurse on social media, who through her bite-sized lessons titled Civics 101 for Healthcare highlights topics such as how nurses can shape government, how a bill becomes law, how to find your congressperson, and how to use your vote as your voice. Gilanie shared with us how nurses can get involved at the grassroots level of current movements affecting nurses such as the Nursing is STEM movement and the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement. Gilanie's strong passion for advocacy was born out of the moral distress she felt during the pandemic when she realized that the agencies she thought had nurses’ backs, did not. Nurses often complain they are not asked for valuable input on health policy decisions. Gilanie’s message? Don’t wait to be asked for your input, take the initiative and give it! Send us a text Are you a critical care nurse or aspiring to become one? If so, you won't want to miss my guest this week, Sarah Vance. With over 15 years of critical care experience, Sarah is dedicated to educating and mentoring nurses, both new and new to critical care. Sarah has a knack for simplifying complex concepts and bringing a lighthearted approach to the often intense ICU environment. She shares valuable free open-access medical education content on social media, covering topics such as intra-aortic balloon pump placement, sedation and pain management for ventilated patients, and safe blood transfusion administration, all crucial for critical care nurses. Her Instagram handle is @iseeyou_nurse which is a keen play on words but clearly communicates that as a nurse, YOU ARE SEEN. And that is one of Sarah’s superpowers. She sees the nurse holistically, recognizing the emotional and interpersonal aspects in addition to the technical skills and protocols. Send us a text I want you to think outside the box for a moment. What if there was a platform where nurses could connect with other nurses to network, share ideas, build friendships, and support each other with valuable resources? A place where nurses can buy and sell with fellow nurses nationwide, amplify their voices, and advocate for their profession? You might think I’m indulging in fantasy, but it’s not a fantasy - it's a soon-to-be reality, all because one nurse, Jennifer Crow, dared to dream. Jennifer created a social media platform called Nurses For Nurses. The idea was born during a particularly tough stretch of night shifts and it was during these exhausting moments that she felt a collective desire for something more - a longing for unity, support, and a shared sense of purpose. The platform is set to launch in September 2024, and I believe Jennifer’s vision will transform the nursing profession. I've said it before and I'll say it again, nurses who support nurses have all of my RESPECT. In the five-minute snippet: get ready for a short history lesson. Send us a text Today's episode is all about project management. I'm sure many of you have heard of this topic, but what exactly is it? My guest today, Kevin Pannell, breaks it down for us. Kevin is a project management professional in addition to having over 25 years of experience in leadership roles, critical care, incident command, military service, homeland security, and information technology. By now, you may be wondering what the connection is between project management and nursing. Well, let's face it, nurses are planners. You plan your care before every shift and are constantly making changes to that plan during your care delivery. So knowing the principles of project management is a great tool to have in your toolbox. But are you also serving on a unit based council or a shared governance committee? Maybe you've volunteered to lead a team on a project. This can be scary because you can hope you know what to do and that it ends well but having actionable plans will ensure your success, and Kevin delivers these expertly. Kevin is also the host of the popular podcast Hope is NOT a Plan, and through it brings people hope by giving actionable planning steps. As he says after every episode, "Hope is NOT a plan, but a good plan WILL bring people hope." In the five-minute snippet: gone are the good old days. For Kevin's bio, visit my website (link below). Send us a text Are you an experienced emergency, acute, or critical care nurse who needs a refresher on some of nursing’s most complex conditions? Then you need Annie Fulton in your life. Send us a text Wow, can you believe it's my 100th episode already? Before I dive into the details of this episode, I want to express my gratitude to you, the listeners! You listen from around the world, from Germany, the UK, the Philippines, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and many more, and of course to the many of you in the United States. Thank you for listening, sharing my work, sending emails, commenting, reviewing, rating, and engaging on social media. I do not take your dedication lightly. Next, I’m grateful for my amazing guests. I’ve talked with nurses, social workers, physicians, educators, and more. It's been a joy to learn from them as they share their experiences and insights. My podcasting journey started the last year before retirement. I had not been an avid podcast fan until then and found this medium fascinating. A whole new world opened up to me as a listener. I fell in love with some great podcasts, some nursing, some comedy, some educational and some were just wacky, but that's okay because it takes all kinds of people to make the world go round and I consider myself blessed to be one of those people who have contributed to this space. Now, about this 100th episode. A few months ago my brother Chris approached me and said what are you going to do for your 100th episode? He suggested that I have someone interview me. You may remember Chris was my guest for episode three of this podcast. He shared what he does as a nurse researcher and I had a ball interviewing him. There are not many people who have my utmost respect but Chris is one of those people so I turned it around on him and said, "Why don't you interview me?" This is where it gets funny. He suggested we meet so I could tell him what questions to ask me. I said, "That's not how it works! You've got to come up with your own questions." I told him nothing was off limits, he could ask whatever he wanted. So he and Chat GPT formulated an interview and on an early July morning, we met in my recording closet and had a fun and candid discussion. I hope you love it as much as I’ve loved bringing this podcast to you. For Chris' bio and book recommendations, visit my website (link below). Send us a text "Life is a journey, not a destination." This quote perfectly describes the path of my guest this week, Kim Kish, a surgical oncology nurse practitioner. Kim's journey started as a lab research associate where she learned valuable skills and even got published. From there, she moved into cardiovascular circulatory support, where she found herself observing nurses, doctors, and patients. She was again picking up crucial work and life skills that would prepare her for her next career in business. Wait, what? I thought we were moving in the direction of nursing. Yes, but we are enjoying the journey. In her role as a business process design specialist, Kim discovered the joys of traveling, high pay, and process management. But something kept tugging at her, urging her to go around the next bend and discover nursing. So at age 30, she became an adult learner and entered nursing school. Kim is passionate about providing quality care to the people she serves. She is a leader among her peers, a mentor to new APRN's, and a published author. She told me she loves being a nurse practitioner and will likely retire from this profession. Does that mean she has reached her destination? Not hardly. Something exciting is right around the corner. She is soon launching her career coaching business to help nurses in their journey to lead fulfilling lives. Send us a text According to Coachfoundation.com, passion is one of the most important qualities of a good coach. Enter Dr. Ricky Fernandez, a doctor of physical therapy and a burnout coach and I was eager to talk with him for those reasons. We talked about all the things he does as a physical therapist: his schedule (which is kind of sweet), what his patients need, and the importance of collaboration with allied health professionals. As we delved into the topic of burnout, his passion became evident. Having experienced burnout himself, Ricky recognizes the significance of establishing boundaries and prioritizing the mental health of healthcare professionals. He pointed out that certain personality traits such as perfectionism (me) people-pleasing (me as well) and martyrdom (again, me) can make individuals susceptible to burnout. Ricky, where were you a few years ago? While it's too late for me, I found Ricky's insights valuable. Send us a text Meet Gwen Sledge, a retired nurse and Certified Enneagram Coach. Gwen has a deep understanding of the Enneagram and is passionate about using her healthcare experience to help nurses understand how their personality, communication style, and behavior affect their relationships. Not sure what the Enneagram is? I wasn’t either but I learned it’s a personality typing tool that categorizes individuals into nine distinct personality types, each with its own core fears, desires, and patterns of thinking and behaving. In all honesty, I was initially skeptical but after taking the assessment, I was amazed by the accuracy of this tool. I discovered I am a type two and Gwen is a type six and you’ll hear how our readings are reflected in our practice. You might be wondering, "Why is this even important?" As nurses, we collaborate closely with a variety of disciplines in stressful environments, and Gwen pointed out that by understanding your Enneagram type, you can gain insight into behavior which can, in turn, lead to deeper connections and more authentic relationships. Send us a text As a student nurse or a new RN, Dave Dovell is someone you should know. Dave is a registered nurse working on a Progressive Care Unit, with a diverse work history that includes being an executive chef, an educator, working in the 911 system and the emergency room. And his story of why he became a nurse? Let’s just say it will put you in an, “I’m not crying, you're crying” situation. Dave is known as the New RN and his Instagram is chock full of nursing hacks, study tips, and nursing stories to help the new nurse transition to the new role. According to the American Nurses Association, almost 18% of new nurses leave the profession within a year due to stressful working conditions, lack of leadership and supervision, and understaffed facilities. Dave's book, Brand New Nurse: Surviving Your First Day on the Job, should be mandatory reading for all new nurses as it covers topics like transitioning to night shift, professionalism, communication, organization, and time management. These are aspects that nurses don't learn in school. However, it's also a valuable read for seasoned nurses because whether you've been a nurse for two years or twenty-two years, you can probably recall feeling unsure, inept, disorganized, and exhausted during your first weeks and months on the job. Send us a text When I hear the words “flight paramedic” I immediately think of aviator glasses, compact spaces, aircraft propellers, jumpsuits, highly trained professionals, and a general sense of badassery. Enter Samantha Brawley. As a flight paramedic, she cares for the sickest of the sick, and the occasional walking, talking patient, who may just be her favorite, wink, wink. We discussed the team she works with, the procedures in her scope of practice, the territory she flies, and the mental capacity it takes to process things she can’t unsee. And then she told us about the camaraderie. Before flight paramedicine, Sam worked for over a decade in fire and EMS. When she left the 911 system, she missed the shared experiences of getting off shift late, hanging out in the charting room, and talking shit with her co-workers. So, she started the very popular 911 Nonsense podcast and now shares that camaraderie with her guests. And let’s talk about her guests. Sam has clinched some high-profile guests from James Geering, former firefighter turned podcast host of the Behind the Shield podcast to Jenn Hamilton, L&D nurse, women’s health advocate, and Instagram influencer. However, some of the best guests are everyday men and women who serve humanity, like Ryan, a firefighter battling PTSD and advocating for the mental health of his fellow firefighters, Dr. Macias, a wilderness medicine enthusiast, and Kelly, a NICU respiratory therapist who educates healthcare professionals. Send us a text I recently came across Dora Loun's LinkedIn profile, and her bio as a stem cell transplant nurse piqued my interest. However, when I had a conversation with her, I realized that what I thought she did and what she actually does are vastly different. Dora's experience in critical care nursing provided her with the perfect foundation for caring for some of the most severely ill patients. I usually ask my guests to walk me through a typical day in their life as a nurse, but Dora took a different approach. She instead described what her patients go through before, during, and long after a stem cell transplant. This was an intelligent move because hearing about the patients' hopes and dreams for the future, anxieties about the treatment, physical ailments from the medication's side effects, the isolation of loneliness, and the bond they form with their nurses gave me a deeper insight into Dora's work. Send us a text My guest this week, Irnise Williams, has been a nurse for 16 years. Starting with her eye on medical school, she opted for nursing school, fell in love, and never looked back. Because if you’re looking back, you can’t look forward, and forward was the direction Irnise wanted to go. She could have advanced her degree by becoming a Nurse practitioner or a CRNA, two popular paths over a decade ago. Instead, she attended Howard University School of Law, became a lawyer, and established her law firm. She is now in a unique position. As a healthcare and regulatory compliance lawyer with a nursing background, she has a deeper understanding of healthcare practices and patient care. With this knowledge, she helps healthcare providers and organizations navigate federal and state regulations, as well as advising small businesses and educating nurses. As a Top Voice on LinkedIn and a strong Instagram presence as Your Nurse Lawyer, she frequently tackles controversial topics such as documentation, AI, and affecting social change through changing health policy. I’m so thankful to Tiffany Gibson for recommending her bestie Irnise as a guest on my podcast. Irnise has elevated nurses everywhere by using her law degree to amplify the voices of our profession. Send us a text Meet Kirsten Ferren, a nurse who has been serving in healthcare for over 23 years. She brings to the table her experience as a former Chief Nursing Officer and currently holds the position of Vice President of Patient Care. She is also an author, mentor, and leadership consultant at the company she owns, Nursing Inferno Coaching. We had a stimulating conversation about how leaders can show up for those they lead, strategies that help prevent staff burnout, and the qualities that nurse leaders should possess. Kirsten has a passion for developing leaders who value authenticity and connection as essential leadership skills, as well as kindness. I love what she said about kindness! Kirsten's dedication to supporting and developing nurse leaders is apparent, and she strongly believes that how we lead others is critical to changing the culture of nursing. Send us a text What happens when two friends have cocktails and dish on a movie? Magic, pure magic. My first returning guest this week is Patrick Pickarts. Patrick debuted in episode 56 when he told us all about being a nurse in tech. And if you don’t remember him, well, how could you forget about Patrick, it would be like putting Baby in a corner and nobody puts Baby in a corner (Let’s see how many movie references I can get in here). In episode 56, Patrick referred to the hit movie, The Devil Wears Prada and gave me some flack about not having seen it. So right then and there, I committed to watching and inviting him back for an episode in which we give our commentary. It's been seven months since I made that commitment and all I can say is TEMPUS FUGIT- time flies! I recently celebrated my 60th birthday and have vowed not to let time slip away from me because I found out what the secret to life is: friends. Best friends. Patrick is my friend and I could not let this promise go unfulfilled. In the end, instead of the five-minute snippet, I test Patrick’s knowledge with Prada trivia (if you ask me, I’m not sure he’s even seen it!) Sit back, relax, and enjoy your low-calorie popcorn and assorted confections. Well, here goes nothin’! For Patrick's bio, visit my website (link below). Send us a text Meet Haley Diltz, an exceptional woman who had a childhood dream of being Indiana Jones but instead grew up to become a Neurotrauma ICU nurse. She knew early on she had an affinity for the dying and helping families navigate through some of life’s most tragic experiences. It took one very tragic experience in the ICU for Haley to take pause and re-evaluate how she could better serve the dying and is now dedicating her career to end-of-life and palliative care. Haley founded Third Eye Nurse, LLC, offering burnout education, integrative health coaching, and doula services for end-of-life care. She became a death doula, and her expertise as a certified death educator has allowed her to promote accessible and inclusive death care, looking at death, not solely as a physical event, but also as a mental, emotional, and spiritual transition. Through the education of nurses and patients, Haley destigmatizes death and dying by valuing the sacredness and creativity that can exist when we find the courage to participate in and acknowledge death, not only as a natural process, but a natural part of life. And she is making a difference, one death at a time. In the five-minute snippet: She’s a witchy woman. For Haley's bio, visit my website (link below). Send us a text Do you ever come across someone on Instagram who is meant to teach you something? For me, that person is Ashley Wynn-Grimes, also known as The Cannabis Nurse. Ashley is the owner of Cannabis Nursing Solutions, LLC where she teaches nurses the ins and outs of the cannabis industry. Cannabis nursing is a nursing specialty recently recognized by the American Nurses Association. Through Ashley, I learned about where cannabis nurses can work, who their patients are, and how they can advocate for cannabis use within their communities. Ashley is a pioneer in this field and established cannabis patient care programs in Maryland. She also lobbies for its use. Ashley is also the author of the book, Stigmatized. Through it, she sheds light on her path to finding freedom through entrepreneurship and building a brand around cannabis medicine. The research is growing on medicinal cannabis use and the opportunity for nurses to enter this field is great. So if Ashley’s page shows up on your feed, consider yourself lucky because you are about to learn something. In the five-minute snippet: we’re going back, wayyyyyy back. Send us a text Susan Farese is a nurse who has done it all. Well, let me rephrase that. Susan is a nurse who has done a lot. Maybe not all, but her career includes clinical nursing, education, staff development, research, legal nurse consulting, management and coaching. She's also a veteran, having served in the Navy and as a former Major in the Army. How has she been able to manage these stressful, demanding positions? Throughout her career and her life, Susan has tapped into her creativity. She lost her cherished grandmother to early Alzheimer's, and 20 years later she wrote a poem in her grandmother's memory which started on a path to healing. She has since authored the book Poetic Expressions in Nursing...Sharing the Caring and advocates for the creative use of poetry for nurses to express what we feel daily: wonder, frustration, grief, and love for the profession and our patients. But Susan's creativity is not limited to just writing. She is also an accomplished wildlife and nature photographer, a Haiku teacher, an actor, a blogger, a public speaker, a frequent podcast guest, and even runs her own public relations company. Susan's advice to fellow nurses: cultivate your creativity, be open to new ideas, and always be willing to learn and change. Reinvent yourself. Evolve. Love your life. In the five-minute snippet. She's also a doctorally-prepared nurse and CEO of Code PRep, an in-hospital cardiac arrest mock code training program that helps teams prepare, execute, and evaluate codes more effectively. Now, I opened with Susan is a class act, and let me explain. Susan and I recorded an entire 1-hour podcast episode, or at least I thought we recorded. There was just one small problem, I never hit the record button. It pained me to tell Susan that we had nothing. Our episode was flatline. Susan did not skip a beat and graciously agreed to give her precious time to do Susan and Michelle 2.0. Our second conversation was equally as memorable as our first. We discussed the challenges of running a code, teamwork, egos, and that darn defibrillator. Why are we all scared of the defibrillator? But Susan makes it as easy as one, two, three. Really, it's that easy! Our conversation is full of useful information to make saving lives more efficient with better outcomes. And as Susan says, outcomes equal people. Send us a text When I heard Gaby Morales speak about adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, on the Nine One One Nonsense podcast, I knew I had to bring their message to you. Gaby explained that ACEs are adverse childhood experiences such as physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as other forms of household dysfunction like mental illness or substance use problems, and living with a violent or incarcerated parent. ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, substance use in adulthood, and suicide. Gaby's not new to nursing. They've been a nurse for eight years and are currently the clinical educator for a Level I trauma emergency room and a DNP student. Through their work, they've encountered many healthcare professionals who were completely unaware of ACEs and how they affect the health of their patients. So Gaby has made it their mission to educate healthcare professionals about the impacts of adverse childhood trauma. They are taking what they call the "Tour de ACE" on the road and have even titled their presentation "The Greatest Unaddressed Public Health Threat That Most Healthcare Professionals Don't Know About." And with Gaby's passion and efforts, I think very soon that will change. In the five-minute snippet: There are no aces in this card game. For Gaby's bio, visit my website (link below). Send us a text I was completely captivated by my guest this week, Dr. Sarah Ratekin. Sarah is the Owner and Chief Happiness Officer of Happiness is Courage, LLC. I’m all about the happy and if there’s one thing the nurses need right now, it’s more happiness. With a background in organizational ethics and a doctorate in business administration she helps her clients, which include healthcare institutions, improve the employee experience, and spoiler alert, it doesn’t involve pizza parties. She explained the formula of happiness at work is determined by only two factors: solid relationships with the people we work with and that the work we do is meaningful. I can’t think of a healthcare professional who does not have those two factors on their radar. Sarah has been accused of being a Pollyanna and vehemently rejects that label. Her approach to gratitude and happiness at work comes from both academic research and personal experience. Sarah’s passion for transforming workplace cultures as well as her optimistic outlook has me hopeful for the future of nursing. In the five-minute snippet: Watch out Wilbur, Sarah’s comin' for you! Send us a text In 375 BC, the ancient philosopher Plato wrote, "Our need will be the real creator." But over time, the phrase has been condensed to its current form, "Necessity is the mother of invention." Alex Whitefield, aka "The Break Nurse", is an innovator and nurse leader who identified a need: hospitals were using outdated break systems which were making it difficult for nurses to get breaks. So he co-invented Breakalgo, a software program that optimizes break performance through smart scheduling in real-time. Why do we need breaks? Consider the cognitive, emotional, and physical load nurses endure in a typical twelve-hour shift. Now add to that little time to pause from witnessed trauma, nourish the body, or rest, and recover. Numerous studies show our ability to critically think diminishes with physical, mental, and emotional depletion. But our nursing culture continues to view breaks as a luxury, not a necessity. Alex has made it his mission to change this narrative and is proving to us that over two millennia later, Plato's axiom still holds true. In the five-minute snippet: Alex, you need a raise. So when she manifested her goal on LinkedIn to book twelve speaking engagements this year, I jumped at the opportunity to invite her to be my guest because her wisdom for nurses cannot go unheard. Tiffany is an emotional intelligence consultant and the founder of New Nurse Academy, LLC. During our conversation, she stressed the importance of emotional intelligence for nurses. She says managing oneself is crucial before managing others, and that entails understanding one's core values. Tiffany has designed a life that aligns with her core values: time, financial and recreational freedom. Send us a text According to Forbes magazine, the relationship between managers and their employees has a significant impact on their mental health, similar to the effect of a partner. My guest this week, NICU Nurse Manager, Felicia Torres Vaughn, understands this and works hard to build strong relationships with her staff. During our conversation, Felicia clarified some common misconceptions about managers and emphasized the importance of mentorship. She also encouraged the idea of embracing failure, as it provides an opportunity to learn and grow. I’ve had many mentors throughout my journey, and Felicia taught me a valuable lesson on what it means to be a compassionate and thoughtful leader. She does this most profoundly, by example, not expecting her staff to do anything she wouldn't do herself. As she spoke of her love for Mother Teresa, I noticed similarities in their service mindset, humble spirit, and desire to bring love and light to the people they serve. Send us a text It was great reconnecting this week with my old friend and colleague, Rochelle Caldwell. Now let me rephrase that: we are not old, our friendship has just happened to span 43 years. Rochelle is a labor and delivery nurse and an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and since that’s a mouthful, let’s just say an IBCLC. She was inspired to pursue this career path by another nurse, also an IBCLC who witnessed her interactions with postpartum mothers and recognized her potential. As a labor and delivery nurse, she is uniquely poised to observe newborn baby behavior, provide lactation education, and advocate for the breastfeeding needs of the mother/baby dyad. According to Rochelle, empathy is the most critical characteristic a nurse can have when working with breastfeeding families. Send us a text This week, I had an informative conversation with the Founder and CEO of the CRNA School Prep Academy, Jenny Finnell. Like a great nurse entrepreneur, Jenny identified a need: CRNA candidates were struggling to get into these highly competitive schools. So she created the Academy, a place where potential students can find resources on how to land the all-important interview, how to make themselves stand out in a crowd of candidates, how to improve their emotional intelligence, and important financial coaching because CRNA school is expensive! If being a CRNA is even remotely on your radar, you need to find Jenny now. And she's easy to find. When I said she’s everywhere, she is, she’s everywhere. After retiring from her work as a Pediatric ICU nurse, April founded Nurse Money Date, a financial coaching business and you’ll love hearing the reason behind the name. I never considered seeking out a fellow nurse for financial advice but this may have been a mistake because April helps nurses feel comfortable with money through leveraging their experience in nursing and by using language they understand: the nursing process. And this is genius. April’s goal is to uplift nurses financially so they can stay in the profession they love and feel in control of the work they do. In the five-minute snippet: it’s a 1970s disco flashback. Send us a text Myra Gamble is so chill and laid-back, it’s hard to believe she’s a Trauma ICU nurse. She’s also done emergency room nursing, hospice, home health, cath lab, interventional radiology, and telemetry. And I imagine that such a wide range of experience has only made her a better ICU nurse. As I listened to her recount stories from the COVID ICU, I remembered the toll it took on so many healthcare professionals. I loved hearing how she organizes her day (she may have a touch of OCD), and how it's vital in a busy ICU to have appropriate ratios and break nurses. We talked about what it means to be part of a tribe and for Myra, the deep connections she has with her coworkers have certainly enriched her life. She’s now enriching others’ lives through her business, Travel with a Tribe, LLC. Myra helps travelers find joy in experiencing new places, cultures, people, and food, don’t forget the food. She makes it so easy, all you have to do is show up and what could be more alluring to busy medical professionals than to have everything done for you? Maybe more PTO? Yeah, more PTO. Myra’s philosophy is life is too short to not use your PTO so get off the couch, get on a plane, and see the world! In the five-minute snippet: Food, don’t forget the food! Send us a text My guest this week, Lynn John, is a smart, tenacious woman. Deciding in high school to become a nurse, Lynn was told that would never happen. Armed with a prove-them-wrong attitude, she forged on and obtained her Master's in nursing. But after several years of working under institutional abuse in the form of unsafe staffing and mandatory overtime, she realized she did not want to be boxed into a W-2 job until retirement. So she switched gears and started a real estate investment consulting business. And what she's accomplished in a few short years is no less than phenomenal. She now teaches fellow nurses how to create financial freedom through real estate investing. And no, she is not encouraging nurses to leave the profession. Nurses are coming to her because, like her, they love being nurses, but want more freedom over when, where, and how much they want to work. So, in a way, she's saving the nursing profession. Send us a text Cassidie Thomas is a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. This week, I had a conversation with her about fertility nursing, which is a fascinating field that I knew little about until now. I learned that fertility nurses take care of a diverse group of patients, including couples who struggle with infertility, egg donors, individuals, surrogates, and cancer patients who want to preserve their eggs for future use. These patients often undergo hormone treatments and surgical procedures, and they are going through emotionally challenging times. Therefore, if you want to pursue a career in fertility nursing, you need to have a high level of emotional intelligence. I could hear Cassidie's enthusiasm as she spoke about the importance of building rapport and maintaining relationships with people who are facing major life changes. And speaking of major life changes, Cassidie herself is a few months away from becoming a DNP-FNP! She pursued this goal so that as a school nurse consultant, she’ll be instrumental in educating school nurses on the mental health needs of students. In the five-minute snippet: Hot feet? With 38 years of operating room experience, from a surgical tech to a circulating nurse and culminating as an RNFA, he paints a very clear picture of what the job entails. And as Bill says, 'church mice need not apply.' We talked about the schooling and experience you need for this advanced practice degree, the certifications, professional organizations, and the roles of all the OR players. I learned that the job is highly technical and physically demanding, but also extremely rewarding, and for Bill, the joy of his life. We had a candid discussion about his medical retirement from the OR and how the loss of his nurse identity catapulted him into the darkness of suicidal ideation and fueled his alcoholism. Send us a text This week I had a great conversation about all things remote nursing. My guests are Maggie Lajaunie, Head of Clinical Services, and Blaire McElroy, Clinical Services manager for the remote care company, Veta Health. I came into the conversation with ZERO knowledge about what remote nursing entailed and I left with a new appreciation of it. Like the Grinch, my heart grew three sizes that day because once again, I was blown away by these two dynamic nurse leaders. They elevate the patient experience by first enhancing the nurse experience and provide nurses with the necessary tools and training to be successful and happy in their remote work. I have always admired nurses who help other nurses, and Maggie and Blaire have my utmost respect. Send us a text It was a thrill to reconnect with my colleague and friend, Kari Replogle. Kari has a gentle personality that perfectly suits her role as a NICU nurse. But don't let that delightful personality fool you. Kari is also a highly skilled practitioner and self-proclaimed lover of the adrenaline rush. In our conversation, Kari reflected on seeing her mom help people as a nurse, whether in a hospital or a camp setting and became inspired to follow in her footsteps. It's no mystery how she adopted a service philosophy. Her parents, Lynne, a nurse, and Paul, a teacher, both had long careers in service. They are now retired but continue to help impoverished communities in Mexico. And while we're on the subject of service, Kari's husband, Craig, a Navy veteran, served our country for over 20 years, and Kari spoke candidly about the challenges of being a military wife and family. Nevertheless, her faith and kind nature drive her to be the best she can be. Her three prayers as a nurse? That her care is helpful to her patients in body, mind, and soul, that she is a positive contributing teammate, and that she never stops learning or striving for excellence. It's safe to say that she is well on her way to achieving those goals. In the five-minute snippet, cows over dogs any day. Send us a text Ever since I started this podcast, I have been looking forward to talking with a nurse who is also a JD. Recently, I got the opportunity to have an insightful conversation with Kwamane Liddell. Kwamane is a healthcare visionary. You only need to glance at his LinkedIn profile to see the many accolades he has received from various sectors, including healthcare, business, innovation, and technology. Here are just a few examples: - He was the first African-American male to graduate from Southern Illinois University's College of Nursing. - He is an Aspen Institute Healthy Communities Fellow - He is a Johnson and Johnson JLABS Innovator - He is the Founder of Nutrible , a company that utilizes AI social workers to help families access community resources on demand. Could he have done all of this without a law degree? I’m convinced Kwamane can do whatever he puts his mind to. When he founded Nutrible, he needed to know more about the underlying causes of health disparity, which was leading to the suffering and death of his patients in the emergency room. So by furthering his education and earning a Juris Doctor degree, Kwamane became well-equipped to change health policies and address this issue. Kwamane is changing health equity, one person at a time, and in my book, he embodies the definition of a hero. In the five-minute snippet: food, glorious food! Send us a text Paras Barnett was leading a robust life as a nurse. She worked at a prestigious institution, provided expert nursing care to her patients, was a strong organizational leader, and a loving wife and friend. However, despite all this, she felt like something was missing and was on the verge of burnout. So she became a Caritas coach, and in the process, learned how to prioritize self-care in order to be able to fill the cup of others. This single act catapulted her into humanitarian work. She is now affiliated with Jordan International Aid and travels to underdeveloped countries multiple times a year to provide medical and surgical care. These medical missions are not funded by any organization, and the medical professionals themselves bear the cost of travel, housing, and food, which can often be between three to five thousand dollars. Paras offsets this cost by creating and selling beautiful jewelry. Her loving, generous nature brilliantly shines through in all she does. Send us a text As we approach Veterans Day this week, I want to introduce Captain Jennifer Savage-Cawley, a long-time friend and colleague who served as a nurse in the United States Air Force. Since starting this podcast, I've been eager to talk with a military nurse and Jennifer made that possible. I was immediately curious to know why Jennifer joined the Air Force. Her response was hilarious and did not disappoint. Jennifer shared that military nursing can be challenging. It involves long hours, less-than-ideal locations, piles of paperwork, strong personalities, and the constant threat of deployment. Jennifer herself was deployed on a secret mission to Africa during Desert Shield. However, there are numerous benefits as well, such as becoming an officer and quickly climbing the ranks, having the military pay for your higher education, 30 days of vacation per year, free housing and medical care, and the opportunity to travel the world on the military's dime. When you add up all those benefits, the pride of serving one's country trumps them all. Jennifer should be proud of the seven years she served in the US Air Force, I certainly am. D.D. has had a remarkable 20-year healthcare career which has taken him from the Peace Corps to an EMT, from flight nursing to the ICU, and landing in Interventional Radiology. Now, there is a new chapter in his life: author. And what does he write about? Something he is intimately familiar with. His debut novel, Ready Left, Ready Right gives us a cockpit view of the intense pressures first responders and flight nurses endure every day. He brilliantly accomplished his goal of bringing awareness to the extraordinary mental health challenges that these professionals struggle with in the course of their work. Send us a text * * WARNING** During this episode, we discuss infant loss, suicide, and grief **PROCEED WITH CAUTION** On a recent Sunday morning in October, I sat down with my long-time friend and colleague, Angela Gonzales. The month of October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and we brought awareness to this all too common and often minimized topic by remembering Angela’s son, Daniel. Daniel was born to Angela and her husband David on June 9th, 2010 at 32 weeks gestation and lived for just three hours, dying from polycystic kidney disease. This tragic event started Angela on a path that she never asked for but has ultimately proven to be the best healing medicine she never knew she needed. It was Fred Rogers who said, "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'" And that perfectly personifies Angela. She had a long history of helping families as a postpartum nurse but she took it one step further and founded her non-profit, A Legacy of Love, and began helping women weather the storm of infant loss. We didn’t just talk about Daniel that Sunday morning in my closet; we celebrated him. Yes, you heard me right, I said celebrated. Though Daniel lived just a few short hours, his legacy of love lives on in his family and in the work Angela does to ease the suffering of others who have experienced this deep loss. Send us a text I recently looked up the word 'mogul' in the dictionary and found this definition: an important or powerful person. This perfectly describes Savannah Arroyo, who is a nurse by profession and an accomplished real estate investor as well. After years as a nurse administrator, Savannah was seeking a better balance between work and life, aka less work and more life. And that's when she ventured into real estate investing. In just three years since her journey began, she has acquired over $20 million worth of property, partnering with other healthcare professionals to scale her portfolio. She passionately believes that nurses are perfect candidates for investing because of their unique assets, such as time management, organization, prioritization, and delegation skills. She harnessed that passion and began educating other nurses on the benefits of financial freedom through investing. Not for John Silver, a nurse who has dedicated decades of his life to studying it and believes it’s anything but dry and lacking in substance. Send us a text Sarah Waldron is a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife who started out in High School volunteering in L&D, was pulled into a room to watch a birth and was hooked! After becoming a nurse, her path to midwifery was not linear. Along the way, she worked in Med-Surg and pediatric emergency care but her experience in these different areas of nursing has been invaluable in her work as a midwife. After many successful home births, Sarah opened her own practice: Wildflower Birth and Wellness. She addressed my safety fears head-on. As a NICU nurse, I was initially skeptical about home birthing, but Sarah's matter-of-fact approach, passionate confidence, and ability to up-triage when necessary took the fear out of the process. And then there’s the topic of breastfeeding (Sarah was actually breastfeeding her newborn during the interview) YAY! Her patients meet with an IBCLC before giving birth to ensure they have all the information and support they need. I appreciate Sarah's comprehensive and holistic approach to patient care. Her dedication to her patients is clear, and her passion for her work shines through. In the five-minute snippet: are these clothes multiplying? For Sarah's bio, go to my website (link below). Licensed vocational nurse, Andres Perez knows his motivation to be a nurse, knows his scope of practice, knows he loves emergency nursing, and knows he wants to continue his education to be a registered nurse. He also knows what brings down his stress level: music. Between the voice and the violin, he's got self-care literally at his fingertips. Send us a text How do you move from emergency nursing to technology? Patrick Pickarts did it with enthusiasm, his get-out-of-jail-free card, and a smidge of reckless abandon because that's how he rolls. He admits that learning how to tweak an electronic health record is not as easy as caring for a patient with a tweaked back. Patrick's current project involves utilizing technology to assist hospitals in freeing up busy nurses from the tedious task of calling staff for open shifts. Can I get an amen? As someone who values lightening the load for nurses, I deeply appreciate Patrick's contributions. I was smiling and laughing the entire time we talked, and I felt like I was talking with an old friend. Well, not an old, old friend, but a young old friend. Send us a text I was fascinated by Janelle Barowski's profile on LinkedIn and knew I had to connect with her. She's a nurse and a talented freelance medical writer, having worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. Janelle found her calling in medical writing after realizing that bedside nursing no longer fulfilled her, and has since achieved the work-life balance that many strive for. She explained that nurses are highly sought after in medical writing due to their expertise and compassionate writing style, which is very similar to how they speak with patients. I discovered that there are numerous outlets for medical writing, including nursing curricula, journals, NCLEX questions, continuing education, medical blogs, and more. Janelle even referred to medical writing as an entry-level job that requires no prior experience. What I appreciated most was Janelle's perspective on nurses leaving the bedside to pursue writing; she reassured me that they are still helping patients, just in a different way. This power duo mustered up their courage, left the emergency room for the board room, and haven’t looked back. It takes a village to create a newsletter this good so Tamara and Hannah have surrounded themselves with brilliant content contributors, advisors, and out-of-the-box thinkers. Nurses are busy! Send us a text Meet Jennifer Carlquist, a Physician Assistant who is a true expert in her field with a wealth of experience in both cardiology and emergency medicine. Somewhat of a private detective with her patients, she has a keen ability to get to the heart of the matter, which is not always the presenting problem. She achieves this by connecting with them on a personal level, understanding their human condition in addition to their medical condition. As a PA, Jennifer practices with great autonomy, is at the top of her game, and is truly living her passion which is to save lives. When she's not working with patients, she actively shares her knowledge through her business, Cardiology Made Easy. Send us a text In my conversation with Nicole Weathers, I had a moment that made me wonder, "Why didn't I think of this?" Nicole is a pioneering nurse who cofounded STAT PD, a medical marketplace that empowers nurses and allied health professionals to purchase and sell resources for their professional development. She started her career in a rural hospital where she had to take on multiple roles, but she prioritized her professional development and gained invaluable experience. An educator for both patients and nurses, she invested in her own education and is currently a doctoral student. As if that weren't enough, she manages an online nurse residency program that helps new nurses across the nation transition from student to practitioner. Nicole firmly believes in lifelong learning and feels that professionals should not have to start from scratch when seeking development resources. And I wholeheartedly endorse that perspective. Send us a text In my interview with Nicole Cromwell, we didn't talk a lot about the specifics of nursing, though Nicole has a long history of practicing in some of the most high-intensity, high-stress areas, including oncology, intensive care, Covid ICU, and flight nursing. The cumulative stress of this took a toll on her in the form of burnout. After losing a young patient in the ICU, an artist, Nicole discovered art as a healing modality and the ultimate form of self-care. What she didn't expect was that people who experience her art, feel the same emotions as she does while creating it: peace, serenity, and a renewal of their spirits. There is a huge body of research that cite the benefits of creating art in any form: decreased stress and anxiety, increased endorphins, and easier access to emotions, just to name a few. Nicole wants nurses and all healthcare professionals to reap the benefits for themselves. In the five-minute snippet: This is my kind of girl’s night out! Send us a text Katherine Leamy set out in life to become a physical therapist but instead became a fantastic nurse and we talked about all things PACU nursing: the ratios, the time spent with each patient, her autonomy, how she involves the family for support, and the importance of critical thinking skills because, after all, the PACU is a critical care unit! We even dished on the funny things patients say when waking up from anesthesia (I can’t imagine what I said!). She sold me on PACU nursing when she described what she loves about it: the close proximity of her colleagues, the teamwork, and seeing her patients progress by providing everything they need in the short time they are with her. AND, bonus, she’s a travel writer with a book on the horizon! It’s a memoir of traveling not only solo, but traveling light, I mean her Instagram is @the5kilotraveller. Send us a text Christina Gagnon was born at 25 weeks gestation, weighing just 1 pound, eight ounces. Now, this is incredible in its own right but Christina was born in 1986 when micro preemies of her birthweight and gestational age only had a 14% chance of survival, and of the few that did survive, often suffered the effects of extreme prematurity throughout their lives: blindness, asthma, cerebral palsy, and many others. In comparison, a baby born like Christina today would have an 80% chance of survival, or better and that fact is mainly due to the advances in research and technology that are afforded the modern-day NICU. Thankfully, Christina escaped many of the problems I just listed but still suffers from chronic sinus infections, PTSD, asthma, and a mild communication deficit. And the key word there is mild; I found her to be intelligent, intuitive, and very well-spoken. I love how she describes her mom, her life-long advocate, as a warrior! Send us a text I've often said on this podcast that many nurses choose this profession for reasons that aren't noble or lofty. Alisha Sandidge-Renteria changed that for me. As a teenager, she witnessed the economic disparity in healthcare after seeing her mother, who was fighting cancer, be forced to choose a cheaper, experimental, and less effective regimen which ultimately ended her life. Since then, Alisha has embodied the words of Gandhi, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." And as a nurse practitioner, she can do just that. Of course, we talked about the particulars of the job, the schooling, the patient population, work settings, diagnosing, and, you know, me, we also discussed professional organizations and board certification. There was some heavy lifting as well. We talked about broken systems and broken people. But through it all, there was one common thread evident in our discussion: connection, with our patients, our communities, each other, and ourselves. Send us a text I had the best conversation with Carla Stanley about her journey as a DNP student. I have to admit, I was a little intimidated when I saw all the letters behind her name but I had no need to be; she’s delightfully down to earth. My respect and admiration only grew when I learned the ‘why’ behind her multiple board certifications; Carla strives to be the expert in her field. I love it when she said, “If you can see me, you can be me” and she’s using all the tools in her toolbox: her education, certifications, credentials, professional memberships, networking, and very soon, her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree to improve health outcomes among black, indigenous, and people of color. Send us a text Life has not been easy for Sabreen Qassem. As a Muslim immigrant, she has endured frequent relocations and deeply rooted cultural expectations that are in conflict with her dream of becoming a nurse. But I was smiling the entire time we talked because Sabreen is as charming as she is intelligent, well-spoken, and hardworking. She has taken on a lot. Not only is she a full-time BSN pre-licensure student, but she also works the front desk at her college and as a student nurse aide on a busy cardiac unit. When she isn't studying or volunteering for her University's Future Nurses club, she's spending the little time she has left with family and friends. Send us a text I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with Australian BSN student, Caitlin McKenzie. First of all, she's a pleasure to listen to. Between her accent and her humor, I could listen for hours. But the stories of her challenges, triumphs, and her future dreams are really what captivated me and I'm sure they will you as well. She's in her last few months as a nursing student and went from absolutely hating school as a young person to absolutely loving it as a mature learner. She is well aware of our profession's challenges, such as staffing issues and burnout, but she is hopeful for nursing’s future. Balancing the demands of school, work, and children as a single parent, support from friends and family is crucial. I can hear the pride as Caitlin talks about being an indigenous Australian single mom and the first child to graduate from University in her family. Honestly, I can see the smile on her face and feel the pride in her heart as she accepts that diploma in a few short months. In the five-minute snippet: Caitlin, your kids ARE fantastic! Send us a text I had so much fun talking with school nurse, Victoria Gutierrez! Honestly, I was enchanted by her excitement and enthusiasm, and I know you will be too. The skills she learned as an ICU nurse: critical thinking, organization, and delegation, have served her well in her role as a school nurse. Although she misses the acuity of the ICU, she’s not missing out on the joy she has found in this niche nursing specialty. She schools us in the education required, responsibilities, challenges, and rewards, oh, and don’t forget that awesome schedule! Her advice for those who are curious about school nursing? Try subbing part-time as she did, before you commit to becoming credentialed. I’d say that’s a pretty good lesson. In the five-minute snippet, get that garden growing girl! Send us a text Many nurses practicing today entered healthcare knowing they absolutely wanted to be a nurse. But Derick Pedigo’s journey was different. Starting as an EMT and observing the nurses in the Emergency Department, he said, “I want to do that.” When he didn’t get into the program the first time, he decided to go the LVN route. Working as an LVN with very sick renal patients, he learned valuable skills to propel him further in his quest to be an RN. Send us a text Before speaking with Taofiki Gafar-Schaner, I had very little knowledge of Informatics Nursing. He was terrific at giving us a window into this interesting nursing specialty. Taofiki’s knowledge of the role is apparent and he taught us much: from how electronic health records are built to the vulnerability of these records to cyber attacks, from what kind of schedule to expect, to the education required. I think the most important lesson he taught us is just, how to be a good human. As a nurse informaticist, he is a nurse advocate of the highest level, improving nursing workflows and even co-inventing a product that benefits nurses in the care of their patients and there’s no better human than that, one that helps nurses, help patients. There will be nine minisodes in total and are commentaries on one of Florence's many publications and I think one of her best, Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not, written in 1859. This book was recommended and loaned to me by my brother, Dr. Chris Patty, my guest for Episode 4 of this podcast. Be sure to check that one out if you missed it, he’s fantastic. During these minisodes, I will be giving away three of the commemorative editions of Florence’s book, Notes on Nursing. This is an extraordinary Lippincott edition with fancy, gilded pages and introductions by nurse leaders, past and present. There will be more information on my Instagram which is @theconversingnursepodcast so be sure to go over there and look for the giveaway details. I would love for you to receive one of these special editions! Thanks for listening, let’s get started! Send us a text Have you ever driven an expensive sportscar, you know, one that goes from 0-60 in 2.5 seconds? You’ll have the same experience talking with Flo Schenke, she’s fast and furious! She’s also kind, compassionate, highly skilled, brilliantly intelligent, and funny as hell! In this interview, she talks about all things CRNA, or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist. What she does, who she works with, her education, her business, legal challenges, and maybe the most important part of our conversation is how she treats people, gaining their trust and proving her trustworthiness with each patient. Flo, you can give me a cocktail any day! In the five-minute snippet, she tells us about a very expensive, but tasty mistake she made involving wine…cheers! Here is Flo Schenke. Send us a text I'm so glad Larry Logsdon, MSN Ed., PHN, RN, RNC-NIC, CLC came on the show to share his perspective of being a male in nursing. He didn’t think twice about his decision to become a nurse; he just followed his heart. And what a heart he has, you can hear it in everything he says. He dispelled many of the stereotypes attributed to male nurses and he did it expertly. After almost 15 years as a nurse, his newest adventure as a NICU Clinical Nurse Educator has him so excited he’s losing sleep! He is an amazing human with an empathetic nature that is unmatched. In the five-minute snippet, Larry reveals how his superhero would save him, and it’s not how you think. Sorry, Larry for not giving you the ‘Joe Rogan’ experience, next time, stogies in the closet! Send us a text As Kendra and Hannah Oliveira discuss their shared experience as the daughters of NICU nurse Cheryl Oliveira, you get the distinct feeling that they didn’t miss out on anything, in fact, I would say their lives were enriched in many ways. The American novelist, James Lane Allen said: “Adversity does not build character, it reveals it.” Kendra, a future nurse, and Hannah, a journalism major reveal their characters as they remember their childhood experiences of being awakened in the cold, dark hours to be taken to daycare, celebrating birthdays and holidays while their mom worked, and that their very-present father, Tom took them to visit Cheryl at work where they saw her in action and grew to appreciate her professionalism. I’m not going to lie, in the five-minute snippet, my audio got a little sketchy but the girls sounded great and you just might get emotional like I did when you hear how their parents’ relationship inspires them. Send us a text Have you ever wanted to know what a labor and delivery nurse does? Well, in this episode, Christine Daniel, a labor and delivery nurse for over two decades tells us all about the highs and lows of this interesting nursing specialty. The lows? Well, the pace is fast, you can stand for long periods, it's very physical and there’s dealing with loss, as well as the social issues surrounding pregnancy. But then there are the highs: the individuality of each delivery experience, the challenge of the operating room, the thrill of learning a new skill, the shared sense of teamwork, and the awareness of just how much joy you give and receive in a day’s work. And don’t forget about the vagina in the box (I’m not sure if that’s a high or a low, but it was the source of a lot of laughs). In the five-minute snippet, I hope that Christine's wish may someday come true: that those little thought bubbles above her head will become visible to all, so watch out! Send us a text My interview with Brenna Frigulti, BSN, RN, CCRN was so informative! She brought us everything travel nursing, from what to expect at a new hospital, how to avoid sketchy housing, how to negotiate a contract, make friends and explore your surroundings. Listening to Brenna, you can just hear her knowledge and passion about critical care travel nursing in every word. I was inspired by her story about what travel nursing enabled her to do financially. She survived my hot closet and wasn't the least bit scared of the dolls. In the five-minute snippet, her bougie self makes an appearance- five-star hotels for the win! Send us a text I had a lovely time reconnecting with one of my most highly regarded colleagues, pediatric hospitalist and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Dr. Christine Nelson, M.D. With many decades of experience in her pocket, she was my top pick for discussing the physician-nurse relationship and how good communication between the disciplines can promote patient safety, and prevent physician and nurse burnout. Charged with teaching our newest physicians, her message for them to promote trust with nurses is “listen and respect.” Wise words, not only for medical professionals but for all of us. In the five-minute snippet, I actually stumped her with my Green Bay Packers trivia! Send us a text Have you wanted to know what nursing was like more than six decades ago? Well, Beverly Hoffman, an 86-year-old retired nurse, gives us a peek inside. I loved everything about this interview: hearing Beverly's experiences as a new nurse in a pediatric unit, how she got to closely know her patients as a clinic nurse; sharing their family vacations and pictures of grandchildren. She gave us a reminder from the ancient Stoics: memento mori; "remember, you must die," and has not let the grass grow under her feet since retirement, becoming involved in her church and community. The five-minute snippet was so much fun as I learned about another passion of Beverly’s, the Green Bay Packers! Send us a text Heather Vails, MSN Ed. RNC-NIC, is definitely in my badass nurse category. She has lived with the rare genetic disorder Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or EDS, for decades. She has not only lived, she’s thrived. Send us a text Di's passion for teaching our new generation of nurses is evident in all she does. From her start in the Navy mentoring corpsmen to her Peds and NICU days as a bedside nurse, then managing a busy NICU and now as a nurse educator, she brings her knowledge and her gift for communication to a higher level. I love that she teaches her students to imagine their loved ones in that hospital bed, driving them to care for others empathetically.
