Well. What a 7 months it has been since we last spoke... I've been wanting to record an episode like this for the longest, but for the longest I haven't felt fully able to speak on my experiences this year. Even this is only scratching the surface of what I have learned recently, but listen up if you're keen for some insights on: - Overnight success vs overnight exposure - What it means to be a "working actor" - Doing the work of letting go I hope you enjoy the episode! It’s the first day of Spring y’all & it’s also 🎉MY BIRTHDAY! 🎉 To honour *finally* entering the last year of my 20s, I wanted to share 29 things I have learned as an actor so far: 1. Everything passes 2. If you ever need the toilet on set ask to go for a “10-1” (ten, one) 3. You can feel so alone sometimes, but all actors want to be seen. None of us is alone in that 4. The nerves never go away 5. Things happen in the time they are supposed to 6. Collaboration is the true gift of this industry 7. There is no such thing as a bad offer in a rehearsal space 8. No one will give a sh*t about that hair that’s out of place in your headshot 9. Nothing is ever as it seems, be open to everything 10. An agent should feel like a teammate 11. Being an actor is the best job in the world, but it’s not the most interesting thing about you 12. Downstage means the front of the stage. Upstage means the back of the stage 13. Being number 1 on the call sheet is a huge honour but an immense responsibility 14. Be kind to everyone. Not because you don’t know where they’ll end up, but because you don’t want to be an a$$hole 15. That thing you’re struggling with now will seem so easy one day soon comparatively 16. Direction is not a personal attack, take it 17. Fretting about an audition won’t change the outcome 18. There are worse things than being ‘out of work’ 19. This is a people business and some of the most amazing people are in this business 20. Touring is gruelling, pack a solid survival kit of home comforts 21. No one ever misses a job because they took a holiday 22. You might have to miss a holiday to take a job though 23. You always have more to learn about the craft of acting 24. The work you make with friends is the best kind 25. There is no shame in working a muggle job 26. Every life experience you have is preparing you for some role, someday 27. A great teacher/mentor is invaluable 28. You deserve to be in every audition you’re called in for 29. Life is short, don’t neglect the other parts Have a beautiful week! And some cake - we celebratin' x

This week I am finally committing to less commitment when it comes to this podcast - with chest! It has been such an honour to produce this podcast weekly (for the most part) since December 27th 2021 and I hope that it has given a decent amount of insight into the plight of being a working actor, from a level of perceived success. I still have much more to learn and will still have much more to share, so this isn't goodbye! It's just a warning that from henceforth you can expect these episodes to come at you a little more sporadically, as I endeavour to deliver quality over quantity. And of course, there's a little sprinkling in there of a some rich takeaways I have had from some of my recent trips to the theatre and cinema. I don't know when we will speak again, but as soon as something significant happens I promise we shall. In the meantime, feel free to join my new monthly "check-in" newsletter via my coaching business In The Room, starting 1st March 2023. You can sign-up at www.stepintotheroom.co.uk . Alternatively, you can also find me on any social media platform using the handle @adele_jjames 💛 Until next time! This week, I am creeping out of my February hibernation to talk to you about an observation that I came across the other day about being a successful actor. I also wanted to share some insights I had after going to watch Burntwood School's production of Grease earlier this week, which awoke in me such a craving for the thrill and joy of acting at its core! For Making Our Way this week, I am chatting about a tendency some of us can have to anticipate the result of something and therefore fail to take action on that same something, inspired by a chat I had with one of my In The Room coaching clients. This week I might still be bearing the war wounds of my latest battle with the flu - the second time this winter - but I am back nonetheless! Having had such a lack of energy of late has really got me thinking and reflecting on what it means to give my energy and effort to things - so that I can a) access the community that I need to survive this industry, and so that I may b) be able to move forwards in my career and my life. Permission is something that we need to be able to give to ourselves, and I think it is something that we ought to give to ourselves if we want to see progress. That is to say, permission to take up space in whatever way we need/want to and permission to try (and fail) at things. For Making Our Way this week, I was inspired to talk about a friend of mine who moved stateside a few days ago after obtaining her O-1 visa some months back- because I think we could all really benefit from being a little less think and a little more DO! Just like her. Do you have a topic idea for a future Making Our Way segment? Email it over to: itrpod@stepintotheroom.co.uk . This week I am throwing it back to a conversation I had with the delightful Kyla Frye just before Christmas in 2022, all about her life as a mummy, actor, writer, director, producer and all-round inspiring human being. Kyla Frye is an award-winning actress and filmmaker, whose intent on shaping the future of TV and film began with the launch of her production company, Fryeday Entertainment, in 2012. With a passion for bringing diverse and marginalised stories to the mainstream, Kyla believes that every voice deserves to be heard and every person, deserves to be seen. From writing, to directing, to starring and producing, Kyla’s ability to be both versatile and innovative, has allowed her to bring about three short films that have received wide critical acclaim and multiple festival selections alike; showbiz documentary, “The Key”, Amazon Prime crime caper, “Double Cross” and mental health awareness film, “Faces”, Kyla Frye is about being the change we want to see, both on and off the screen. Kyla has an infectious spirit and many wise and wonderful things to say. I hope you enjoy her episode as much as I enjoyed recording it! Merry Christmas podcast listeners! My gift to you this year is the conversation I had with the delightful Harry Collett! Harry is an Essex-born actor best known for playing Ollie Hide in Casualty from 2014 til 2022, Tommy Stubbins in Dolittle and for his latest role, Prince Jace Valeryon, in HBO’s House Of The Dragon. I’ve admired Harry’s work, but more so his work ethic- particularly as such a young performer in such high end projects, ever since our paths first crossed on Casualty and I am so proud and excited to see the heights he is reaching now. He is still humble as ever, so funny and just lovely to chat to. I hope that you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it! This week, I have been thinking a lot about balance and more specifically, the choices I (and all of us) get to make around the prioritisation of our time. After all, she really is the most precious resource we all have... In Making Our Way this week I am addressing a question from the In The Room (coaching) Instagram Q+A a few weeks ago, about how I spend my time when I am not working (on an acting job). A valuable and complimentary topic for this week's time focus. Do you have a topic idea for a future Making Our Way segment? Just as I had hoped it would be, the move into the new house this week has brought with it the freshest of fresh starts, with the priority this week being mental space, nourishment and clarity (even if only on what to get more clarity on...). As such, I haven't done a single thing that was acting-related. Instead, I have mostly been pouring myself into my life coaching diploma and thus, myself. I can't wait for you to share in the observations I have gained from doing that! In Making Our Way this week I am addressing a question from the In The Room (coaching) Instagram Q+A this week, about knowing if you have found the "right" agent for you, but more widely, trusting in your inner compass more to guide you along your journey of what is "right" and "wrong" for you... Well, this week's episode might feel like it has nothing to do with pursuing an acting career... but in that way that there is no acting without the actor, it has everything to do with it! As I make (yet another) move to a new home this weekend, it feels only right to open up about my long-standing wrestle with depression - something which has been very prevalent in the time I have spent in the home I am leaving - and my subsequent love of new starts. Plus, hear my tribute to my album of the year: 'This Is What I Mean' by Stormzy. It has all at once personally shattered and creatively inspired me beyond measure. In Making Our Way this week I am addressing a question from the In The Room (coaching) Instagram Q+A about being seen regularly by the same casting director, because I feel this question actually speaks to a wider trap that I myself am guilty of falling into - creating problems where they don't exist... A few weeks ago when I was still on tour, I had the good fortune of being able to sit down with my good friend, Vincent Jerome. Vincent Jerome is a London-based artist with a degree in Performing Arts from London Metropolitan University. Since working in theatre venues, he has acted in films such as Transformers: The Last Knight and Wonder Woman 1984 . He has written, produced and starred in two award-winning short films and has various upcoming film and TV roles including a lead role in the BBC revival of beloved school drama Waterloo Road . Vincent is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry and recently became an ambassador for the Anna Fiorentini Performing Arts School for young people based in East London. In this episode, we chat all about Vince's come-up in the industry from independent filmmaking and theatre, via his approach to developing characters, owning every role and working with industry family; to the point that he is at right now: soon to air as one of the leads, Deputy Head Lindon King, in the upcoming reboot of Waterloo Road (BBC). I hope you will enjoy hearing him speak on his experience of being an Actor as much as I did! This week I have been slapped around the face by the anniversary of some very big life changes. It has had me reflecting on what it has been like to survive personally and thrive professionally throughout a tough grieving process. If you would like to talk to anyone about anything you are struggling with, please visit checkout Papyrus - a charity for the prevention of young suicide, or Samaritans , who are both FREE to contact by phone or email. I also had the good fortune of watching a West End show last week before we moved into The Rose Theatre Kingston for the final two weeks of The Importance of Being Earnest. I have come away with some observations about being on the other side of the curtain whilst in the middle of a show run. Thank you to my In The Room (coaching) client for inspiring this week's Making Our Way segment: trusting your auditions and being ready for work. This week I am coming to you from gorgeous Los Angeles, California! However, and perhaps contrary to expectation, I am here purely for pleasure this week visiting friends and taking a well-needed/deserved holiday break from touring The Importance of Being Earnest around the UK. I have made absolutely no business engagements whatsoever for the time I am out here and having already done a lot of the tourist-y things in LA on my last trip here years ago, this time around I have relished the unique opportunity to view LA from a much more local perspective and get a sense of what it might be like to actually live here one day. Well, well, well, it's been a little while since we last spoke indeed! But I have to say that getting back into recording the podcast again this week has made it feel like absolutely no time has passed whatsoever! In any case, it is my pleasure to introduce the new and improved version of the podcast: In The Room with Adele James (formerly known as Making My Way). There is a lot of heaviness that has consumed the past few months for me, but there's also lots to be grateful for too - especially as I am currently speaking to you from the dressing room of the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich - venue #3 of The Importance of Being Earnest UK Tour that I am currently performing in! Above all else, I am so glad and grateful to be able to share this time with YOU every week again. The update on the job I've been auditioning for, for four months is... there is no update. What there are though, are a whole bunch of lessons learned from the experience of auditioning for and grieving this job multiple times over. I am now (hopefully) in the final stage of this process and should be finding out either way ASAP, so in the meantime, I offer to you my main takeaways from living in limbo this week.
Mon, March 14, 2022
In the last two weeks I have experienced so many twists and turns - from the joy of an awards nomination, to another unexpected update with *that* job I've been auditioning for since December, to the pain of being bedridden with a horrific flu for several days. As I have often said, this life is a rollercoaster! I do feel though, that I am at a point on the ride where I am learning to value and appreciate myself for getting on it in the first place - and staying on it! Here's why I think you should too...

This week I am pleased to bring you a chat with our second industry guest - the incredibly ambitious and inspiring, Sam Benjamin! Sam is an actor, screenwriter and director known for his roles in Doctor Who, BBC's The War of the Worlds and I Am Vengeance: Retaliation now on Netflix. He's originally from the land of the Beatles in Merseyside, though he describes himself as more of a Prince guy! He's just wrapped on the feature film The Pay Day starring Kyla Frye and Simon Callow, which he co-wrote. He's currently in Los Angeles where he is pitching a number of projects and meeting for some exciting acting roles. We chatted all about making the transition "across the pond", the attitude that has propelled him this far, as well as his vision for a stable and successful transatlantic career. Plus, hear his answer to Olivia D'Lima's guest request for an anecdote of one of his worst commercial auditions to date - I have no doubt it will make yours seem like it was a dream casting... Olivia is an actor and writer, most known for her performance as Fenisha Khatri in BBC's Casualty . She recently died on screen again in Death in Paradise and aims to continue dying (or even living) in more things. In complete contrast to the last two weeks, the past week has been GREAT career-wise (and sleep-wise - at last!) But this is not the time to take one's foot off of the proverbial pedal. This week I have been thinking about how little we Actors sometimes actually get to do any acting, and how we can find ways to act more. Plus, reflecting on the benefits that healthy habits and routine have had for me, navigating an unpredictable lifestyle.

What are my main takeaways from getting ready for 2022 over the past week? The benefits of goal setting, being flexible with myself and keeping a close circle.

For the first episode, I thought it was only right to map out and reflect on my entire journey so far in my journal, leading to where you meet me today: with no clue as to what's coming next and learning to find peace within that.
