Send us a text The memory of September 11, 2001 must never fade. We owe it to future generations to preserve the truth of that day - unfiltered and uncensored. They need to know about the brave protectors who, without hesitation, ran towards danger. These heroes - firefighters, police officers, and ordinary citizens - embodied the very best of humanity; true protectors. But our duty to remember goes beyond that fateful day. Even now, over two decades later, many first responders continue to fight a silent, insidious battle against cancers and other illnesses stemming from their service. Their sacrifice didn't end when the dust settled; for many, it was just beginning. About Niels: Niels Jorgensen, a retired FDNY Lieutenant from Ladder Company 80, was inspired by his firefighter father to join the department. On 9/11, though off-duty, he responded to the World Trade Center attacks, assisting in rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero for four days. Josh decided to follow his brother into the military and joined the army after graduating with an English degree from the University of Memphis. He spent five years in the 82nd Airborne Division, becoming a team leader in the 3-504 Parachute Infantry Regiment in Iraq from 2005-2006, where he conducted combat operations supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. From 2007-2008, Hood served as a squad leader with Afghanistan's 1-508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He put more Foot-to-Taliban-Ass and was decorated for valor in Operation Furious Pursuit. On his return to civilian life, he was a sniper team leader on a full-time SWAT team in Memphis, TN, where he was awarded the lifesaving medal for saving the life of a civilian with quick, creative, and resourceful instincts. Unfortunately, he quit SWAT and the Police Department the day his son was born, knowing he couldn't bring that "trash" home to his family. Hood now lives in Collierville, TN, as a full-time author. Send us a text Do not miss the first half of this conversation with Gary. The Protectors® Podcast welcomes Gary Edgington, author of OUTSIDE THE WIRE. From Gary: I’ve been chasing the “bad-guys” in one way or another since 1976. I guess it’s in my blood. My dad was a cop too. Tragically, he was killed in the line of duty in 1979 by a knife wielding lunatic. He got one shot into the guy, but it wasn’t enough. I was in the third week of the LA Sheriff’s Academy when that happened. After graduation, I worked for several local agencies including the Manhattan Beach Police Department, the Beverly Hills Police Department, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Then in 1994, I was appointed a Special Agent with the California Department of Justice. I worked major narcotics cases, organized crime, unsolved homicide, and internal affairs. Collateral with these assignments I was a firearms and tactics instructor with the LA office. From 1999 to 2008, I was a member of the FBI’s “Joint Terrorism Task Force” in Los Angeles. After 9/11, I was promoted to Task Force Commander and took command of a multi-agency counter-terrorism task force based in Southern California for the California Department of Justice. I retired in 2008 from DOJ and deployed to Iraq as an embedded counter-terrorism/organized crime subject matter expert working counter-IED with the US Army. https://garyedgingtonauthor.com/books/outside-the-wire/ This episode brought to you by RANGER POINT PRECISION https://www.rangerpointprecision.com/ Support the show Make sure to check out Jason on IG @drjasonpiccolo

SPLIT DECISIONS: Award-winning actor, rapper, and producer Ice-T unveils a compelling and astonishing memoir of his early life robbing jewelry stores until he found fame and fortune—while a handful of bad choices sent his former crime partner down an incredibly different path. Ice-T rose to fame in the late 1980s, earning acclaim for his music before going on to capture television audiences as Odafin “Fin” Tutuola in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. But it could have gone much differently. We talk about the walk, how it came to be, and a ton more. I recently completed the 12 HOUR WALK and it really changed my perspective on a lot of things, it was much needed! Make sure to check out the book and try the walk. PS: I asked Colin to take part in the MURPH as part of The Protectors Podcast (we are an official host). Be cool if he does it with us (virtually). Some of Colin’s Adventures: 50 High Points; In the summer of 2018, Colin took on the 50 US High Points. After a 13,000 mile journey in 21 days, 9 hours, and 48 minutes he completed the 50 high points challenge, setting a new world record. In the last 7 days of the project alone, in an astonishing final push, Colin climbed the 7 highest peaks in the lower 48 US states, totaling over 100 trail miles and over 50,000 feet of elevation gain. Along the way, Colin invited others to join him at their state’s high point and be part of what he called the “Forrest Gump effect”. Greenland Crossing; Just weeks after setting the new 50HP world record, Colin set off on a training expedition across Greenland to further prepare his mind and body for his approaching Antarctic journey. Pulling a 250 lb sled in subzero temperatures across hundreds of miles of rough glacial terrain, he gained critical experience traversing the world’s largest island, over 400 miles from East to West in the course of 28 days. The Impossible Row; For the month of December 2019, Colin teamed up with Captain Fiann Paul and a crew of four other rowers in partnership with Discovery to attempt the world’s first completely human powered ocean row across Drake Passage - from the Southern tip of South America to Antarctica. Drake passage has a reputation of being the roughest, coldest, and iciest passageway on the planet. Having never rowed a boat before, Colin endured a mind over matter mission requiring courage, grit, teamwork, and stamina to complete the voyage in 12 days landing on the frozen continent on Christmas Day. Send us a text The Protectors Podcast ™ Presents Christopher Strom. Retired NYPD & Author. Full podcast out on every major podcast platform. We talk about: The NYPD & Police losing numbers at an alarming rate, advice for those entering the LEO field, learning how to talk to the community, and Chris’ book BROOKLYN TO BAGHDAD. About the book: Brooklyn to Baghdad is the true story of a retired NYPD intelligence sergeant applying his street-cop tactics and interrogation skills against a lethal insurgency that had infected Iraq. A group of retired Special Forces soldiers and law enforcement experts came together to form the counterinsurgency group codenamed "Phoenix Team." Exposing the corruption of both the Iraqi and US governments, the team faced serious setbacks and challenges. Brooklyn to Baghdad shows the effectiveness of the Phoenix Team, their ability to process forensic evidence and human intelligence gleaned through interrogations at the point of capture to provide direct targeting for follow-on missions. This memoir also illustrates the politics of Washington, DC, and the US Army in the war-fighting effort, which continually hampered complete success while simultaneously preserving career aspirations. Throughout are many humorous and emotional anecdotes that reveal the men behind the missions and the toll the theater of war takes on real human lives Support the show Make sure to check out Jason on IG @drjasonpiccolo

Send us a text PART 2 BECOMING THE PROTAGONIST. Dr. Joshua Appel recalls his journey to becoming an elite PJ in the Air Force, his path to becoming an ER doctor, his connection to the Murph Challenge, and the incredible rescue of Lone Survivor Marcus Lutrell. About Josh: Appel served active duty from 1994-99 as a pararescue specialist in emergency medical tactics, as well as combat and survival skills, continuing on with the United States Air Force Combat Search and Rescue Squadron as a reservist throughout medical school. The rescue team that recovered the lone survivor, Marcus Luttrell, was led by Appel. Josh and the MURPH (from the Fit at Midlife site): Hero WOD’s are usually programmed and set up in gyms, and it is a great opportunity to commemorate these heroes to instill and retell the stories of heroism and sacrifice. Murph was first registered on CrossFit’s Main Site on August 18th, 2005. No one can tell when exactly it became a tradition for gyms to program Murph on Memorial Day. But in 2007, Josh Appel, an Air Force pararescue jumper who headed the team that jumped to save LT. Murphy’s team, took the concept to his gym, Albany CrossFit, and the rest of the CrossFit community did the same. Send us a text REWIND Michelle Black joined The Protectors to talk about her book SACRIFICE and a ton more. SACRIFICE is the first book in years that I sat down and read cover to cover, it is that intense and a must-read. Michelle has an incredible story. About the Book: The shocking and affecting memoir from a gold-star widow searching for the truth behind her Green Beret husband’s death, this book bears witness to the true sacrifices made by military families. When Green Beret Bryan Black was killed in an ambush in Niger in 2017, his wife Michelle saw her worst nightmare become a reality. She was left alone with her grief and with two young sons to raise. But what followed Bryan’s death was an even more difficult journey for the young widow. After receiving very few details about the attack that took her husband’s life, it was up to Michelle to find answers. It became her mission to learn the truth about that day in Niger–and Sacrifice is the result of that mission. In this heartbreaking and revelatory memoir, Michelle uses exclusive interviews with the survivors of her husband’s unit, research into the military leadership and accountability, and her own unique vantage point as a gold-star widow to tell a previously unknown story. Sacrifice is both an honest, emotional look inside a military marriage and a searing investigation of the people and decisions at the heart of the US military. https://michelleblacksacrifice.com/book/ Support the show Make sure to check out Jason on IG @drjasonpiccolo

Send us a text 90/10 Negativity is infectious, like an airborne disease, that propels from the mouth directly into your ears. It doesn’t have to be negativity coming directly from you, it can be media (social and mainstream), from the family, from friends, and a big one, co-workers. Anxiety, health, family, life in general adds to the stress and pressure of your life, adds up big time. Blood pressure rises, sleep is off the hook with sleepless nights. Now add negativity to it, feel your stress levels and anxiety sky rocket. How much of this negativity comes from actions outside our control, outside our purview, and how much really should we be worried about. Is it just grumbling, lamenting and commiserating with others. Ever feel good after that? Me either. Sometimes you cannot control the negativity, that is outside of what 90/10 is. There are instances that life throws at us, those we tackle head one. What is always thrown at us? Is the glass half empty or half full, get this, it has something in it! It’s not empty, so who cares if it is half empty or half full, at least you have something. Try out the 90/10 for a few days. If it works, cool. If not, cool. Support the show Make sure to check out Jason on IG @drjasonpiccolo

Send us a text REWIND | Tom Spooner| (Original Air Date July 28, 2020) #151 Tom Spooner joined The Protectors Podcast™ to talk about his military career, how he became involved with Warriors Heart, stigma, and tons of other great topics. I am a solid proponent of Warriors Heart’s mission, during our conversation I discuss the loss of my brother to the effects of addiction and understand firsthand how hard it is to find the right fit for those struggling with addiction, especially those in The Protector community. Please check out Warriors Heart and share their message. About Tom: Former Special Forces and Warriors Heart Co-Founder Tom Spooner’s service to our nation in the U.S. Army spanned nearly 21 years (1990-2011), who is now dedicated to healing his fellow warriors struggling with chemical dependencies, PTSD, mild TBI (which he also faced after a combat injury) and other recurring issues. His career included time in the 82nd Airborne, as a Green Beret in the US Army’s 7th Special Forces Group and, ultimately, in the US Army’s 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta as an Operator. Spooner joined forces with successful treatment providers Josh and Lisa Lannon to open Warriors Heart in 2016. Warriors Heart is the first and ONLY accredited treatment program in the U.S. for “warriors only” (military, veterans and first responders) that helps American Warriors struggling with drug and alcohol addiction and other reoccurring issues. Tom built a "training program" approach to residential treatment that helps our protectors overcome the stigma and shame of asking for help. Warriors Heart is a 543-acre ranch outside San Antonio, Texas, that is the opposite of a hospital. Since retiring from the military in 2011, Tom has successfully enabled thousands of military and law enforcement personnel to acknowledge their struggles, seek treatment, and understand that they are not alone.
