Around 45% of all children in the UK will experience a break-up of their parents, before their 16th birthday; a staggering statistic. Couples who have had children separate for various reasons, including financial pressures, unreasonable behaviour, or simply just growing apart. Unfortunately, what is very common after parents separate, is that one parent tries to erase the other parent from their child’s life; usually talking negatively about the other parent to their child/or children, trying to alienate the other parent from their child’s life. The term ‘Parental Alienation’ is given to a wide range of behaviours and actions carried out by the main and resident parent, which can be very subtle and manipulative towards the children. In this episode senior and specialist family Barrister Susannah Johnson KC and Hatti Suvari bring you insightful, jargon free legal information, and their top tips if you are the parent being alienated, how to work on changing the situation and how to get help, as always in plain and simple English.

The impact on people that have been ripped off by fraudsters can be financially devastating to lives; with many people loosing thousands of pounds to scams that come in various forms. For example, romance fraud, bank account scams, scammers pretending to be service providers or mail companies asking for a shortfall in postage all dressed up in different forms to extort money fraudulently from a victim. Fraud committed in the UK more than doubled in 2023 to £2.3bn, making it the second-biggest year for scams in the last two decades, and staggeringly accounting for 40% of all crime in England and Wales. In our digital world, the ways in which fraudsters are getting their hands on our money has vastly changed shape, with criminals using artificial intelligence, and every means of electronically contacting us, ie. Text, WhatsApp messages, direct messaging on social media sites, emails, phone calls and much more. Whilst couples do not enter in to a marriage expecting to get a divorce and considering who should get what out of their marriage if the relationship comes to an end, the confusion on who gets what assets from the marriage, and why, along with the expense and stress that can come with getting a divorce, can be very confusing and a trying process. Divorcing couples who are unable to agree on who how the matrimonial home is divided, and how all of the assets and liabilities of the marriage are divided between them, are often left in the hands of a Judge to decide how their assets should be divided, often leaving divorcing couples with eye watering legal bills to pay, at the end of a lengthily legal process. With many marriages taking place between people who are well into their 30’s, 40s and 50’s plus, it is not unusual for individuals to enter in to a marriage having acquired their own assets. But in the eyes of the law, is it the case that everything each person owns, including assets that they brought in to the marriage, should be divided equally between the parties in a divorce? Can it be argued that assets that you brought in to the marriage are not 'joint' assets’, and that you should walk away with what you brought in? Or do our laws state that once you are married everything that you both owned prior to the marriage becomes a part of the matrimonial pot? In this episode, senior Barrister Michael George and Hatti Suvari discuss all of the above and much more; telling you what you NEED TO KNOW; as always, in Plain and Simple English.

When we posted a 60 second video giving the answer to the question of, 'can someone record you without your permission?' across our social media channels, it very quickly, and unsurprisingly got over 100,000 views, simply because the answer to this question is full of myths and is unknown to many. TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and other popular platforms are crowded with video recordings, good, bad and indifferent. But is it illegal for someone to record you, and to post, forward or to use that recording without your permission? What can be deemed as your consent, and what steps can you take if you do not want a recording of you to be posted or shared? In this informative episode, we debunk the jargon, as Hatti Suvari and senior Barrister Tim Sampson bring you interesting, insightful and jargon free information, specifically covering 'individuals' recording other individuals, as always, in plain and simple English.

In a split second a person can become a killer or be killed. A One Punch Killer is when someone throws a single punch that results in a death, and often when the perpetrator does not intend to kill, but nevertheless, a single punch that has a devastating effect. But how is this dealt by our laws, when an unfortunate and unexpected criminal act is carried out, when the intention was not to kill and possibly the only intention was to have a good old-fashioned street brawl? Would the perpetrator be given any leniency in law? Controversy surrounds this topic; with questions being asked on ‘what is a fair price for someone to pay for causing a death, even though it was unintended?’. In some cases, it has been argued that long prison sentences should not be handed out due to an unfortunate event of death not being the intention by the accused, whilst campaigners demand tougher sentences. In this episode senior Barrister Simon Spence KC and Hatti Suvari will bring you interesting, insightful and jargon free conversation that you will hear nowhere else! Studies indicate that 40% to 50% of athletes have experienced anything from mild harassment to severe abuse. During the mid-90s reports of sexual abuse of child athletes in sport started to emerge in the UK. By the mid-2000s, child protection and safeguarding procedures had been introduced in to sport, making the country one of the first in the world to adopt such measures. The 3-time Olympic Champion and the first British winner of the Tour de France in 2012, Bradley Wiggins, was one of many athletes who spoke out and revealed that he was groomed and sexually abused by a coach at the age of 13. There has been much criticism of our laws, with some saying that there is a wide gap, allowing perpetrators to mask themselves as ‘sports coaches’, and able to get away with their heinous crimes of abuse. An independent enquiry stated that ‘child abuse in sport has been covered up for decades’. In this episode Hatti Suvari and senior Barrister Cameron Brown KC bring you insights in to this topic, from what is meant by child safeguarding in sport, to the new planned laws to protect and safeguard children. Statics quote that up to 70% of business partnerships ultimately fail, even though setting up a business with people we know – whether colleagues, family or friends, and with whom we already have established relationships with, is very common; and we assume the relationship will be trusting, life-long and solid. Legally formalising your business relationship with a shareholder’s agreement, can seem unnecessary, and to some, even an uncomfortable subject to discuss with their new business partner or partners. When entering in to an exciting new business venture, it is not the 'good times' that could be the problem, however, it is how you will resolve issues, challenges and disagreements when they arise. Without a shareholder’s agreement in place outlining the understanding of the business relationship, you are at risk of damaging your business and your relationship with your business partner; and if matters cannot be resolved amicably, fighting a very costly and stressful legal battle can certainly take its toll. In this episode seasoned Barrister Tim Sampson and I bring you jargon free information on what a shareholder’s agreement is all about, top tips on what you should look out for when getting one drawn up, and why having one in place is so important, as always in plain and simple English.#shareholdersagreement #aclassshares #bclassshares #companyownership #legallearning #hattisuvari #timsampson Hosted on Acast. The term 'fire law' may not get us very excited, however, as well as some quirky legal facts, there are some serious points in our laws that we should and NEED to be aware of, so that we can not only keep ourselves and our loved ones safe, but so that we can be aware when laws are being broken. Following the tragic incident of the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, more of us have started to think about whether high-rise buildings are safe and legally compliant, with discussions in the press and in court rooms taking place more now, than ever before. If you have a potential claim against any person or company, then one of the most important points to remember is that there will be a time limitation as to how much time can pass in which you can bring a claim, and once that time passes, a claim can no longer be made. Different areas of law and claims that can be made, have different time limitations. So what happens if you are 'out of time'? And why is time limitation such an important point when considering bringing a claim? Perhaps you are a defendant to a claim made against you or your company, and you need to understand if the claim was brought against you within the time limitation, or else would the claim be invalid?
