Grants 101: How to Best Prepare to Receive Funding for your Fishery w Ava Schulenberg
She's back, and we're thrilled! Ava Schulenberg is based in Santa Barbara, CA, and is a female fisherman and leader in several fishing organizations. You may remember Ava from episode 96, where she goes into detail on how to advocate for your fishery and gives tips to help get your public comments heard. In this episode, Ava shares: How she secured funding for a clean-up initiative for CA spiny lobster fishermen. The critical piece she included in the grant that she believes helped her gain priority over other entrants (there were many!). The course she took to learn how to write a grant effectively. I feel the themes complement each other so much because, since the beginning of our economic civilization, POCFs have been instrumental in keeping the industry going and protecting our fisheries, fishermen, and fishing families. And, the people at Oregon State University understand this on a deep level, and here’s how. Our interview today is with Laurel Kincl, a professor at the College of Health at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR. Maressa Voss is a writer, the partner of a commercial fisherman, and a mother living in Santa Barbara, CA. Beyond our shared passion for writing, we have another unique connection—her husband, James, is my husband’s cousin! Oysters, Advocacy, and How a Commercial Fisherman Started an Organization to Keep Fishing and Help Save Coastlines with Bonnie Mitchell of NC Coast
This organization was *founded by a commercial fisherman* who wanted to keep fishing and has since grown into an initiative that helps sustain the North Carolina coastline. This perfectly reflects our fishing families, who have a shared passion for caring for our oceans. And when you connect with others in this space, it can be a real eye-opener on what we’re all experiencing individually to maintain and make positive changes for our coastlines and coastal communities. Our goals may be the same, but our challenges differ. Yet, we can learn from one another how to overcome. This episode is particularly special to me because today we have retired Army officer Dr. Douglas Waldrep, who is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist—also known as my dad! As you probably know by now, my upbringing as a military kid sparked the idea of creating Partners of Commercial Fishermen in the first place. Having a loving relationship AND solo time during a fishing season is an incredible gift many relationships never experience. Though missing your partner and worrying for their safety are inevitable feelings when your partner is at sea, there is also a freakin’ awesome side to having more time for yourself, like focusing on your wants and needs. Happy one-year anniversary of the POCF Podcast! I can’t believe a year has passed, and it’s been really special. In this episode, I share the "Aha" moment I had after recording the previous episode (Part 1). After weeks of feeling kinda low about the fast-approaching fishing season in Bristol Bay, AK, I discovered the one "remedy" that helped me get out of the funk and back into enjoying day-to-day life with my fisherman again. I hope this helps if you're feeling this way, too! Let's normalize having BIG feelings at any stage of the POCF game! In this episode, I give a real-time, first-hand account of how I'm currently working through the feelings of longing/sadness for a fast-approaching season. It's easy to get hard on ourselves for experiencing the ups and downs of emotions whether you're in the on- or off-season. However, instead of feeling punk for letting this get to me after 8+ years together, I remember that not all seasons are the same, and sometimes you feel the feels more than others. This is normal 🫶 Snapping back to enjoying time together is the real trick. How Fishermen + POCFs Can Live Pain Free Without Surgery with Physical Therapist Dr. Colleen Rollo of Paradigm Performance Therapy
What I want most is for Partners of Commercial Fishermen to thrive in this unique lifestyle, and living without pain is definitely a huge part of that. That's why I'm happy to introduce you to my personal Physical Therapist, Dr. Colleen Rollo of Paradigm Performance Therapy. I started going to Dr. Colleen in 2022 when I was experiencing symptoms related to carpal tunnel from repetitive movements due to writing on a computer daily. I worried I needed surgery, but was amazed how quickly I healed thanks to her personal exercises, 1:1 sessions, and the ability to ask her questions via text when needed. Talk about personal service! In this episode, we discuss: The similarities between manual labor and young moms and how to relieve pain and prevent injury from repetitive movements such as lifting traps, gear, or picking up your cute kids (or neices and nephews!). Adra Kusnirova is a former partner of a commercial fishing processor and part owner of a direct marketing family seafood business called Alaska Fresh. We discuss long-distance dating and the challenges of living in remote Alaska with her partner, the isolation and depression she experienced during the rainy summers, and how she used alcohol to cope with depression and pregnancy loss. Adra also the way in which she prioritized her mental health to help get her out of the downward spiral. Of course, this story ends on a positive note! POCF Science Writer Danielle Hall on Why Fishermen Need to be Heard To Help The Environment Ep. 48
POCF Danielle Hall is the Digital Producer for the Ocean Portal for the Smithsonian Institution and runs the Smithsonian National Museum's ocean education website. Danielle was featured on the POCF blog in 2021 when she first moved in with her fisherman on a small Island in Maine. At the time, she had no real background in commercial fishing, and acclimating to a very small fishing community was a big challenge. It’s interesting to hear how life has changed for Danielle, including becoming an advocate for commercial fishing communities in addition to her work as a scientist. Danielle recently DM’d me with a message that I know many fishing couples and families have had behind closed doors: Fishermen are important resources for scientists and researchers to learn how to preserve the environment. Your Ideas Are Needed to Improve Fishermen Safety with Dr. Laurel Kincl of Oregon State University
We've got a seat at the table! This is a behind-the-scenes look at a candid phone call with Dr. Laurel Kincl of Oregon State University. She called to learn from our POCF experience and ask what we would suggest to make fishing safer. I'm sharing because I want you to know that others outside the industry care and want to hear our opinions on the matter to improve commercial fishing at large! Also, your opinion is greatly welcomed! The Fishermen Led Injury Prevention Program (FLIPP) is conducting research over the next several years and would love your thoughts. Please send them to support@meganwaldrep.com or connect with the FLIPP team at https://health.oregonstate.edu/labs/osh/resources/flipp UPDATE: Dr. Kincl emailed the local Coast Guard to answer my question on life-saving techniques if a fisherman is overboard and boots fill with water: "The removal of boots is always an interesting question. AMSEA (and us as well) have done demonstrations where a person who finds themselves in the water shouldn’t concern themselves with kicking off their boots. Not every situation is 100% for sure, but in most cases, the guidance is to stay still and concentrate on flotation. Air is often trapped inside of rain gear, clothing, and even the boots themselves. Thrashing around trying to swim will allow the air to escape. In the example you presented, the person is already in a PFD. So, my recommendation is to keep the boots on. For our Coast Guard boat crewmen, they are in a dry suit, PFD, and are wearing very heavy boots. We leave our boots on. Even with someone in the water without a PFD, with the air trapped in the clothing, some flotation will be experienced. In my experience with swimming (ocean survival training and finishing 2 Ironman triathlons) the majority of swimming propulsion comes from the arms.
