Steve Bishop used to be a youth probation officer. He wanted to help young people navigate out of a juvenile justice system he knew was flawed. Now, as the Associate Director for Probation and System Transformation at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Steve works to transform youth probation systems around the country – from one that punishes making mistakes in ways that leave young people worse off and neighborhoods less safe to one that holds kids accountable for their actions by steering them toward the guidance and support that can help them grow into responsible adults. In this eye-opening conversation with host Maya Rupert, Steve talks about how we can create a more just and restorative system that’s steeped in relationships, trust, and community. This episode was made possible with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, an organization that develops solutions to build a brighter future for children, youth, families and communities. Just in time for the excitement of March Madness, join us for this deep dive into leadership, teamwork, and unlocking potential—on and off the court. From his storied career at Duke to coaching Team USA, Coach K shares what he has learned about the power of honest feedback, why trust is the foundation of meaningful relationships, and how four simple words–”I believe in you”–can change everything. There’s even a story where he hangs up on a player. Twice. (It worked.) In this humorous and heartfelt conversation, Coach K and Kate discuss: Why trust (not talent) is what makes a team great. We’re excited to share a show we know you’ll love: Pantsuit Politics . Hosted by Kentuckians Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers, Pantsuit Politics offers a refreshing, thoughtful take on news and culture. It’s all about paying attention to what’s happening in the world—without the anxiety. This week, destruction can be part of the building process; it certainly is a key part of Elon Musk’s approach to business and his new - legally ambiguous - role with DOGE. There is, however, a fine line between disruption and destruction. The tech mantra of “move fast and break things” can be dangerous, particularly when applied to the government. On today’s show, Sarah and Beth explore this idea and how the new Trump administration is letting Musk run full steam ahead. Plus, they discuss the Trump administration’s approach to foreign policy, most notably marked this week by Ukraine’s exclusion from the negotiating table with Russia. Outside of politics, Beth shares her new hack for managing her online shopping. Topics Discussed Ukraine Excluded from Negotiations Is Elon Musk Building or Destroying Through DOGE? Outside of Politics: Online Shopping Strategies Visit our Substack page for complete show notes and episode resources. When we think of care workers, we often picture individuals who nurture, assist, and heal other human beings. But behind that picture are the harsh realities of domestic work and the many sacrifices this marginalized group makes to uplift others. In this episode, producer and former Lemonada host Hoja Lopez chats with someone who’s uncovering the truth behind the care economy and its exploitative roots. Activist, historian, and Barnard College professor Premilla Nadasen walks Hoja through her most recent book, CARE: The Highest Stage of Capitalism . The two discuss the unfair treatment low-wage workers, immigrants and women of color face in an industry that’s built on inequality, and how despite all this, they’re actually the people whose work “makes all other work possible.” You can learn more about Premilla’s work by following her on Twitter @premillanadasen. We live in an undeniably violent world. Gender-based violence poses a particular threat to the intersecting identities of women, people of color, and marginalized communities. But these survivors are the same folks spearheading some of the biggest efforts to end it. In this special episode, Lemonada co-founder Stephanie Wittels Wachs sits down with two leaders who understand the importance of supporting and empowering survivors in order to achieve change. Stephanie speaks with Aleyamma Mathew, executive director of The Collective Future Fund a donor collaborative organization that works to shape a future free of violence, and Mónica Ramirez, founder and president of Justice For Migrant Women , a nonprofit funded by CFF to help address injustices within the migrant community. “Don’t have sex. You will get pregnant — and die.” This line was delivered by a fictional high school coach in the movie Mean Girls, but it alludes to a real problem within the education system: that the vast majority of U.S. states don’t teach medically accurate or inclusive sex education. Dr. Jennifer Lincoln, an OBGYN and author, is trying to change that. Instead of scaring or shaming people, she’s meeting them where they are and setting the record straight, starting with the vulva. In this throwback episode, V invites Dr. Jen to answer all the necessary questions about periods, STIs, pubic hair, and vaginal emergencies. Plus, she gives a look at the lengths she’s had to go to educate, like planting books in libraries where talk of contraception and abortion is restricted. The news within the news of Donald Trump’s criminal indictment is that anti-Semitic conspiracy theories unfortunately still prevail. V debunks the thin threads that theorists try to spin between money, power, and religion, and what all this has to do with politics. Plus, elsewhere in the government, it’s coming out that unmanned, remote-controlled trains are far less regulated than they should be. To ease all this stress, V takes a trip down memory lane with 2000s icon Christy Carlson Romano, known for hits like Even Stevens and Kim Possible. Christy tells V what it was like leaving their shared home state of Connecticut to perform, how she got her start on Broadway and the reason she returned, and the ways she’s continuing to use her platform to advocate for child labor reform within the entertainment industry. V explains the stakes, the goals, and the action we need to hold our governments accountable for in order to get on the right track. Then, to reset our spiritual palate, V welcomes Kevin Garcia, a spiritual coach and expert on deconstructing the harmful effects of certain religious practices. Imagine getting pulled over because your car’s tail light is out or your window tint is too dark. For millions of people each year, the price of one traffic ticket creates a never-ending cycle of punishment and poverty, keeping adults and juveniles tethered to the U.S. criminal justice system through predatory fines. V sits down with Miranda Sheffield and Joanna Weiss, two advocates who work directly with impacted communities to eliminate the fines and fees associated with the legal system. Ranging from license suspensions to the loss of voting rights, there are many ways people are punished for not paying off minor offenses, and these experts discuss what can be done to stop it. V’s talking everything voting — past, present, and future. They’ll also turn an eye to the Supreme Court, which was down one justice in a recent case. Then, V is joined by Negin Farsad, comedian and host of the podcast Fake the Nation. V invites Dr. Jen to answer all the necessary questions about periods, STIs, pubic hair, and vaginal emergencies. Plus, she gives a look at the lengths she’s had to go to educate, like planting books in libraries where talk of contraception and abortion is restricted. What are some nostalgic things you remember doing at the mall? For V, it was working their first job at Bath and Body Works, buying CDs from Radio Shack, and watching people take glamour shots at JCPenney. The mall was once poppin’, and it used to be the hottest place to build. What happened? Architecture critic and author Alexandra Lange joins V to talk about the inside history of the mall, from the design features that make malls an iconic American institution to when their popularity began to drop off. That's where they learned about diverse relationships, how to stand up to bullies, and that wearing blazers is cool. Now, V’s talking to the show’s iconic star about how she went from starring in Hairspray to being the youngest talk show host that audiences had seen to producing documentaries inspired by her personal stories. Then, V sits down with Dr. Sidhbh Gallagher, the surgeon known on TikTok for providing gender-affirming care to grateful patients. Halloween isn’t the only spooky thing happening this fall. In Italy, the newly elected prime minister is unearthing some concerning politics of the country’s past, and many people have eyes on the U.S. Supreme Court to see if they might do the same — their newest term starts this week, and a lot of consequential cases are on the docket. But not all is dark! V shares how the government is engaging more everyday people, and how more everyday people can make trick-or-treating better for everyone. Then, V chats with filmmakers Robin Hofmann and Laura VonMutius about the film they created for a child’s Make-a-Wish dream, sharing highlights from behind the scenes and the details of V’s special cameo. Follow Robin’s company, Hoffy’s Heart Productions, on Facebook and Instagram ; follow Laura and Mute Majesty on Facebook and Instagram . And stream the short film SpecialTee now! It’s officially fall! Time to bust out the Halloween decorations, order an overpriced latte, and curl up with a spooky story. Lemonada’s Book Club powered by Penguin Random House is sure to help you get your ghoul on: this month’s pick is none other than the debut novel by Crime Junkie host Ashley Flowers, called “All Good People Here.” V welcomes Ashley on the show to talk about how she went from the #1 true crime podcast to a #1 New York Times bestseller. We’ll hear about the inspiration behind the murder mystery, why it’s set in Indiana, and how it’s just another way she’s expanding her true crime footprint - even if she thinks she’d make a bad detective. It’s been more than a week since the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman who was killed while in police custody for wearing her headscarf too loose. Today, V catches us up on the raging protests happening in Iran and abroad in support of bodily autonomy. They’ll also explain how the U.S. government would respond to a (hypothetical) nuclear attack, then shine a light on a poet's call to action for the (very real) climate crisis. Then, stay tuned for a conversation with Ellen Scanlon, host of How To Do The Pot. She’ll tell us how she’s breaking the grass ceiling by helping demystify weed for women and other marginalized groups often left out of the cannabis conversation. When offenders cause people harm, the criminal legal system is quick to cause more harm. The incarceration system is unforgiving and cruel, but as we learn this week, there’s a more humane approach to getting justice that also puts survivors first. V invites restorative justice experts Cymone Fuller and Danielle Sered on to talk about their work in this field. We’ll hear about how the length of a person’s incarceration has no direct benefit to the healing of the person they hurt and why restorative justice programs work to resolve conflict and reduce harm. Plus, how you can make a difference on a small level by implementing these practices in your own communities. Last week, you might have heard that the railroad strike was averted, but as V tells us, that's actually just a tentative deal. There's more that needs to happen to make it official. Next up, we all know money makes the world go round... and apparently it also gives you the clearance to solve public health crises? V explains how billionaire Bill Gates is using his clout to control global vaccination response. Then: COVID tests, hours of waiting, intense security, and autographed red, white, and blue M&Ms. We’ll hear about V’s exclusive trip to the White House. Coming out as a person seeking therapy to your partner, parents, or friends can be difficult, and sometimes even dangerous. You’re not alone in your journey — in fact, millions follow clinical counselor Shani Tran for her candid takes on therapy, and this week she chats with V about who can benefit most from therapy and how newbies can get started. This week, V’s opening up about something very personal that has shaped the last seven years of their life. Through this tragedy, V found comfort and support in Lemonada’s mission to help “make life suck less” and decided to leave their dream job to pursue a higher purpose. At a time when V didn’t have all the answers, they leaned on one of the most stabilizing forces in their life to help make sense of a loss. In this powerful and insightful conversation, V meets with Lemonada co-founder and Last Day host Stephanie Wittels Wachs to talk about substance use disorder, harm reduction, and grief. V and Hoja also weigh how effective some protesting tactics are – like wearing Handmaid’s Tales costumes and using coat hanger iconography – when fighting for reproductive rights. When you think of a union job, do you imagine a blue collar worker in a hard hat with a lunch pail? The reality is that the labor movement belongs to a lot of people, and its history is different from what you probably learned in school. This Labor Day weekend, V talks to journalist and activist Kim Kelly about her book "Fight Like Hell." Today, V is trying something new by bringing on stand-up comedian Trae Crowder to go over some interesting headlines together. Because V gets kind of lonely over here! Speaking of, a recent article in Psychology Today claims men are lonelier than ever. Turns out trolling women on the internet and waiting three days to text back doesn't translate to matches. Good news though! You are better than that, and we'll talk you through leaving toxicity behind. Trae gives us his trademark "liberal redneck" take on the student loan forgiveness decision and shares his own experience of dealing with college debt. We’ll also hear about the unsealed affidavit used to justify the search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago. Plus, Trae’s post-and-ghost approach to social media, and advice he has for other liberal rednecks in unfriendly environments, such as family dinners. This week, V chats with their favorite mortuary director, Eileen Hollis, about growing up around death and helping her dad run the family business. Eileen uses her TikTok account to demystify death and answer questions everyone’s dying to know like can you be buried naked? And do dead people really sit up? Today, V’s putting your information literacy skills to the test by taking a look at recent news that didn’t happen but received a lot of attention. Sometimes the truth doesn’t make for an interesting story, so people spice it up with lies in the hopes of getting clicks. And in these cases, it worked. V debunks rumors including New York City’s water being contaminated with polio, the IRS hiring for armed jobs, and Denmark banning kids from getting vaccinated. So, how do we spot false news and make sure we’re spreading facts? V asks Google Product Manager Nidhi Hebbar to weigh in on the issue. But this week, we’re learning that the field was much more than just “stitching and stirring.” It was an empowering way for women to gain respect and recognition. Journalist and author Danielle Dreilinger joins V for a look back at the history of home economics and how it shaped American culture. We’ll hear about the personal lives of home economics women who decided to either stay at home or join the workforce. They determine our financial livelihood. They use our past against us so we can’t move forward. And no matter how hard we try, they never make us feel creditworthy. Today, V’s talking about the outdated and scammy credit score system, and how it’s disproportionately affecting women and communities of color. Equifax? More like Equifake! We’ll also hear about why the FBI is busy handling investigations against Trump and branches of the Southern Baptist Convention. Plus, how one of V’s favorite political TikTokers uncovered an ugly truth about local elections. Then, stay tuned for an honest and vital conversation about prioritizing our mental well-being with Zak Williams. Monkeypox has the potential to infect anyone, regardless of age, gender or race; in cases where pregnant women are infected, the virus can even travel to the fetus. Scientific analysis of the virus is severely lacking, but we do know one thing: folks are not “more at risk” purely because of their gender, race, geographic location or even line of work. That said, there is one demographic being the most vocal and forthcoming about their experiences: gay and bisexual men. This week, V chats with two healthcare professionals and TikTokers who personally experienced monkeypox. Doctor John and Nurse Brian are helping break the stigma by documenting their journeys and educating their followers on how to identify early signs of monkeypox, and the symptoms and care techniques you’ll need to know if you do contract the virus. We’ll also talk about the failures of local & national government policies to protect public health. V also digs into some companies like Netflix and BMW, who are trying to stay relevant and gain customers by launching pointless subscription services, and runs through a list of political backstabs, including who’s the latest to be trashing Trump and his false stolen election claims. Finally, there's a slew of recent Supreme Court cases that are directly affecting Native Americans. For many young people, especially after the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, joining the military isn't necessarily top of mind when they consider their future. This week, V is interested in learning about what factors drive people to enter the military today and why modern recruitment efforts look nothing like the patriotic messaging used in the past. Marine veteran Nicholas Miranowski and Navy Lieutenant Alexis Travis tell V about the unique paths people can pursue that don't include fighting on the frontlines. We'll hear about their journeys of why they became service members and how we can make sure the system is continuing to take care of the people who serve this country. VidCon is this week, and V is there -- along with every other creator on the Internet. So this week they are chatting with Hank Green, the founder of VidCon, who is a familiar voice to those who remember watching Crash Course educational YouTube videos in school and also is well known for energizing a brigade of Nerdfighters, vlogging with his brother, writing books, and TikToking up a storm. Hank, who's been a content machine since the early 90s, talks about his successful online journey of making science less boring and more accessible.
