COPLINE provides 24/7 confidential services to active and retired law enforcement officers and their loved ones. Today's guest is Carmine Czapla, who is a veteran and a retired cop, and is one of the active listeners on the other end of that life-saving phone call. In this episode Carmine, who goes by the nickname Chops, talks about the calls he receives and the why serving in this way is so important to him. Text a Message to the Show This is your Quick Guide to Bagpipe Tunes. I'm anticipating that there will be two distinct camps among my listeners, those who love bagpipes and those who don't yet. But please give this a chance. First, this is fairly short, and there's not a single tune here that lasts more than 2 minutes. Second, I really do understand. I'm not naturally drawn to this music, I had to be invested in it first, through my chaplaincy work with the police department and through my ministry work performing funerals. And even through editing this episode, the tunes that all sounded the same at first, began to be distinct, and more than that, they became something that I found myself whistling as I went about my day. So I ask that you would give the bagpipes a chance, it really is possible for it to grow on you. Resources : Jim's previous appearances were in Ep 017 and Ep 108 J. Text a Message to the Show On Today's episode we're talking to retired DEA agent Todd Hixson. Todd has a tremendous wealth of experience as a DEA agent and we're definitely going to hear some of those stories, working both domestically and on foreign assignment. But I'm going to split this interview into two parts that are both really compelling. First, we have the pros and cons of going Fed and how Todd navigated the DEA both for himself and his family. On the next episode we'll have the other bookend, which will be knowing when to retire and how to prepare for leaving a law enforcement career. Todd has a lot of valuable wisdom in both regards. Text a Message to the Show Every cop has a bump in the night story; sometimes those bumps happen in broad daylight. Today I'm talking to a veteran homicide and cold case detective from Kansas City named Stuart LIttlefield. Detective Littlefield was recommended to me because he's a great story teller with a great story that might actually include an encounter with a ghost. Even if you don't believe in that kind of thing, it seems that as human beings we can't get enough of those strange unexplainable stories and the detective and I talk a bit about that too. Text a Message to the Show When you first became a cop, you probably had a goal. You wanted to become a homicide detective, or a K9 handler, or you wanted to make the SWAT team. Maybe you're on track to achieve that goal, but even if you do make it, what then? How do you go about getting promoted later in your career if you've already gone into a specialty like SWAT? I've got someone for you today who can answer those questions. Today we are bringing back a frequent guest and friend of the show, Ryan Miller. Ryan is currently a major at his department, so not only has he been in the SWAT teams as an officer, a sergeant, and a captain, but he's also been in the position to hire and fire police officers and to evaluate people for special assignments. He's seen this from both sides and has more actual experience advancing up through special operations than most people. Text a Message to the Show Today's guest is Jimmy Graham. Jimmy was a US Navy SEAL and worked for the CIA but one of the most interesting jobs he had, and one that overlaps with law enforcement, is that in both the SEALs and the CIA he trained people in CQB, i.e. Close Quarters Battle, room-clearing, hostage rescue, and room-to-room combat. Jimmy still trains people but now he includes teaching on family relationships, the meaning of manliness, and his Christian faith. These are all lessons that were learned and confirmed in the shoot house. So today Jimmy is going to talk about the wisdom he learned from CQB and how he's applying it as a husband and a father today. Text a Message to the Show Today I called my police chief friend from Minnesota, Tim Eggebraaten, to come back on the show again and talk about the examples we set and the mentoring we do within a police department. Every cop is setting an example, either good or bad, for every other cop in their sphere of influence and I wanted to run an idea past Tim to see if we couldn't be a little more deliberate about being a good example, building some relationships, and making young officers feel heard. Text a Message to the Show I believe that there is a small number of occupations who carefully observe human behavior. Cops are definitely on that list… but so are comedians. I know that both groups make me laugh with all the funny observations they make about the crazy behavior in this world. It's only natural that some cops would gravitate toward stand up comedy and I found one I really like in Vinnie Montez. Vinnie is a Colorado deputy who you might know from his Dry Bar comedy specials or videos of his other live performances from around the country. Text a Message to the Show I've been impressed by the wide variety of jobs in law enforcement and I delight in uncovering forgotten corners of this profession, perhaps to remind you that changing jobs doesn't necessarily mean hanging up the badge. Today I'm talking to Scott Robertson, a game warden from the forests and swampy lakes of East Texas. Scott's daily patrols look a lot different from what I see in urban Kansas City, but there's also a lot of similarities. Text a Message to the Show There are two conflicting truisms in law enforcement: one is old and one is new. First, it's stereotypical that cops, when you ask them, don't want their kids to go into the same line of work. Second, it's becoming more and more true that law enforcement families are some of the only reliable places to find applicants for the job. Police work, like firefighting and the military, is becoming a family business and we're seeing more multi-generational law enforcement families. Today we're talking to Kevin Steele, who is part of three generation, 63 year legacy at the Kansas City Kansas Police Department. Text a Message to the Show This is part two of an interview with Shawn Thomas. If you haven't listened to part one, in which talked about her experience as the wellness officer in a large Sheriff's Office in the Pacific Northwest, then please go download that episode. She had a lot of insight to share, especially if you think you might be the first wellness officer in your agency. But today we're talking about her second chapter. She began producing wellness conferences with speakers and vendors and hundreds of first responder attendees. And this unexpected role became her main gig when she retired. The whole process of putting together a conference is fascinating but I think the main thing I want to walk away with is that you are capable of doing things you never thought you'd do. There may not be a clear path forward, but don't let that stop you from making a difference. Text a Message to the Show Some of the best stepparents I know are police officers. So when it came time to find the 2024 LEO Mom of the Year, I was really happy to receive the nomination of a highly regarded detective who also happens to be a stepmother. So today we're talking to detective Emily Hren, who works at one of our larger agencies just a little ways down the road from me. She and her husband traveled to visit me recently so that Emily could talk about her experience as a woman in law enforcement, becoming a cop as a second career, managing the pressures of a blended family, and how to have resiliency as a police detective. Text a Message to the Show Today we're talking to Gregg Dorsett; he has been a guest several times before mostly on compilation episodes, but his first appearance was all the way back in Episode 004. Today he's a captain at KCKPD and part of his job now is getting the patrol officers better equipment than what they've had in the past. He's had a hand in changing things from reports and records to body worn cameras to how the department buys and equips patrol cars. This isn't as glamorous or as hands-on as most of Gregg's career, but that's exactly why I wanted to talk to him. I believe he has successfully made one of the toughest career transitions a hard-charging, hands-on, take action guy can make -- the transition to support and administration. Gregg's Previous interview was in Episode 004. Text a Message to the Show This episode is Part Two of my recent conversation with Ginger Passarelli from the Soup Ladies. You'll want to go back and catch Part One, episode 081, where she talked about her recent work with the Border Patrol. This portion of the conversation focuses on serving first responders more generally and I wanted you to hear Ginger's passion to serve and how it's combined with integrity and discipline. We could have more people helping but they need to be doing the right things for the right reasons; helpers of all kinds, including chaplains, need to examine their motivations and be disciplined in how they carry out their work… and I believe Ginger sets an excellent example. So take note of the how's and why's in Ginger's story because, someday, you may given access to serve first responders and if you screw that up, the door might be shut to everyone. Text a Message to the Show Today we're talking to Captain Jeff Keck, a North Texas police officer with about 25 years of experience. Jeff and I were talking recently about podcast topics that cops really need to hear and he said a phrase that caught my ear. He said, "from my own experience cops shouldn't always bottle things up." My response was, "oooh, that dog'll hunt!" Police officers are encouraged, both directly and indirectly, to bottle up their emotions, and that rarely turns out well. Well, Jeff had some firsthand experience breaking through that barrier, which is especially difficult when you've spent a couple decades convincing yourself that you're "just fine." Text a Message to the Show Today we're going to take a brief look a the 1933 Kansas City Massacre at Union Station. There is so much to learn by studying criminals and law enforcement from over 90 years ago, and this particular story is a doozy. It touches on half a dozen cities and towns in as many states, involving a couple dozen people, some with personal or criminal connections, and some with no connection at all, who conspire to commit a crime, resulting in a bloody shootout, that fundamentally shapes the modern FBI. Text a Message to the Show What if I told you that there is an organization that helps first responders find counseling in the area in which they live, with qualified experienced counselors who understand how to help cops and firefighters? Text a Message to the Show The United States has a long history of first generation immigrants filling the roles of first responders, both police and fire. As long as there has been police and fire stations, there have been uniformed personnel with a bit of a foreign accent. Text a Message to the Show How do you get the bad guy to offer up a confession? It may be part science but it's also largely an art, managing not only the psychology of the suspect but also your own emotions, like pride, anger, disgust, and impatience. Text a Message to the Show Today we have an officer involved shooting story from San Francisco. Our guest is Jim Dudley, who you might know as the voice of the Policing Matters podcast from Police1.com. Jim is also a retired deputy chief from San Francisco PD and offered to tell his story from when he was a patrol officer in the City by the Bay. Take note of what a close call this fight was for both Jim and his partner, and notice how he describes the effect it had on him immediately afterward. Text a Message to the Show Officers are asked to go investigate all kinds of things that go bump in the night. Spooky houses, hospitals, funeral homes, churches, and cemeteries are all have to be checked out. But at the department that I serve, there are multiple people who believe our headquarters is haunted. It's a old building where you feel the history, with lots of long dark hallways and questionable lighting. I'll be joking around about ghost stories and the smiles will drop from the faces of professional men and women, who suddenly get very serious and say, "No, I've seen things in that building." I asked for a volunteer to give me an example and multiple people nominated Shawn Magee. He's a former SWAT sergeant turned captain in the Investigative Bureau, who now works overnights in one of the spookiest buildings in our city. Text a Message to the Show Marriage in law enforcement seems like a doomed subject sometimes. It's difficult so people talk about it as if it's impossible. But I know several long time married, wise and successful couples where one or both have been cops and they prove that it absolutely is possible to survive an LEO career and keep your marriage. So today we're talking to Erica Davis. Erica married a cop… and lived to tell the tale! If fact, I found her teaching classes at a conference about how to provide meaningful help to LEO wives and that inspired me to get an interview with her. Text a Message to the Show Today we're talking again to Jonathon Westbrook, from episode 011. Now, two years later, Jonathon is running for a seat in the US House of Representatives. Because he's making a first time run for congress, I wanted to put his story in front of you, to give you a glimpse into the process, and to talk about what it means for a cop to run for public office. I know a lot of you can follow the same path, and maybe you should, but before you do, please listen to Jonathon talk about the reasons why you should or shouldn't get into politics. Listen to what he says about matters of character and principle and values, because moving from law enforcement to elected office can be a great way to serve but it can also undo you. Text a Message to the Show Naturally, I think every cop should listen to every episode of Hey Chaplain. But this one… this is really important. It's about leadership and integrity, corruption and gaslighting… it's a about a type of dishonest supervisor who can destroy the culture of a police department and then walk away looking like the only hero. Warren Wilson calls that character a Münchausen Manager and he wrote an article about it for Police1, which is how I found him. Listen to this episode, read Warren's article, and pass this on so that everyone will have the vocabulary to explain the odd behavior we sometimes see. Text a Message to the Show We need 10,000 more first responder chaplains but there's not enough church-trained clergy to recruit those kinds of numbers. So we are going to have to recruit retired first responders! Retired first responders come with a pension, cultural competency, and a passion for the people who run toward danger. But they'll need training, pastoral experience, and one other thing… convincing. Text a Message to the Show Ward Jenkins is joining us again. I was wanting to do an episode, not specifically on Internal Affairs, but generally about officer integrity. Ward has a good story on that topic and he was also adjacent to the famous Rampart Corruption Scandal in LA over twenty years ago. Text a Message to the Show Today we're talking about cold case investigation with J Warner Wallace, he's a famous cold case homicide detective who had his cases featured on television for a decade. Interestingly, he also was once a 35 year old atheist cop who applied his knowledge of solving cold cases to the Bible and then became a Christian. A police officer who's law enforcement skills led him to faith? Now that's an interesting story. The first twenty minutes or so are about cold case investigations: how to build a case to convince a jury, how to work with a DA, and how to prioritize your cases. In the second half of the interview we transition to Jim's personal story of investigating Christianity like a cold case detective and being transformed from vocal atheist to believing Christian. And don't miss what he says at the end of interview about working in a job full of skeptics as a new believer. Again, the religious stuff kicks in about 22 minutes in (and it's really interesting!) but please don't miss one of the most famous cold case detectives in the country talking about his work. Text a Message to the Show The 1980 Norco Shootout was an astonishing bank robbery turned running gun battle turned manhunt turned courtroom drama/circus. And like any critical incident, it had an effect on everyone involved. But throughout this story, I kept asking the same question: how are these officers doing now, 40 years after the deadly event? Author Peter Houlahan was in a unique position to help me answer that question; he had interviewed almost everyone involved. And while he and I are not claiming to be the final word on someone else's mental health, I have a lot of respect for Peter's assessment as a fellow first responder who has been to his own share of traumatic calls, including ones you would know the names of. Here in part two of my interview with Peter, we discuss the effects on the Norco participants both in the first few years and also decades later when he had the chance to speak to them directly for his book. We also talk a bit more about the writing and researching process. Text a Message to the Show The Norco shootout is a very modern critical incident, despite happening over 40 years ago. Apart from the lack of cell phones, much of this could happen today. The bank robbery, shootout, and manhunt that happened in Riverside County California in 1980 are important in part because it is one of just a few historical events that directly led to every police car in America having a patrol rifle. It's also important because four decades have passed; this gives us the ability to more accurately reflect on what went wrong, what tools made a difference, and what mistakes did law enforcement leadership make before, during, and after an incident that shot up 32 police cars and a police helicopter. Peter Houlahan is an author and a first responder. He wrote the seminal book on the subject of the Norco shootout, titled Norco '80 . Text a Message to the Show Let's define a wellness retreat as a combination of vacation, seminar, professional conference, and counseling session. But most cops I know are very reluctant to go to one, in fact they avoid it like the plague. But I want to encourage you to attend these events. And I also want to figure out how we can make these events more effective at helping first responders and veterans. To that end, we'll be talking to my friend from California, Matt Domyancic, because the retreats he's involved in have been very successful. Text a Message to the Show Steven Keogh from Scotland Yard has a new book that is one part history, one part modern true crime, with a Sherlock Holmes kind of flavor; it's called Murder Investigation Team: Jack the Ripper . The book reinvestigates the serial murder crime spree of Jack the Ripper and compares and contrasts how that investigation in 1888 was done compared to how Scotland Yard would pursue it today. Steven gives a really satisfying analysis of what happened, which murders were actually committed by the same serial killer, how police leadership got in the way of the investigation, and what motivated Jack the Ripper to kill his victims in the way that he did. Text a Message to the Show This is a story of parents who came up in hard times and imparted values and principles that are critically important today to Law Enforcement, family, and our culture. In one sense, it's obviously the continuation of episode 060 with Mark Garrett from the California Highway Patrol, although the topic is dramatically different. Text a Message to the Show Some of the most thankless jobs in law enforcement are the 911 operators and police dispatchers, which in some communication centers might be the same person doing both jobs simultaneously. So what motivates a person to work in communications for twenty, twenty-five, or thirty years, when most of us couldn't do it for one? Today I'm talking to Stacey Lowe; she's a veteran dispatcher here in Kansas City and came highly recommended. And I've got to tell you, this is one of my favorite interviews I've ever done. Text a Message to the Show Welcome back to part two of my interview with Ryan Miller about leadership at the sergeant's level. In this episode, Ryan is going to talk about leading officers across that wide spectrum of different ages, how to balance your new administrative responsibilities with leading in the field, as well as giving some good advice about how to handle the situation when an officer is likely going to get fired. Don't miss the good tactic that Ryan's FTO taught him for how to supervise from a short distance away, which he calls "kickin' rocks." If you haven't listened to part one of this interview, you don't necessarily have to listen to them in order, because we cover so many different topics, but you definitely want to listen to them both. And share these episodes with other sergeants and other officers who aspire to be supervisors; we want the best people with the best guidance to lead our police officers. Text a Message to the Show A few months ago, a listener wrote in and asked for advice for new police supervisors. He said, "I'd like to listen to someone that's been in a command role for years and I'd like to hear their experiences and also any advice they might have for the future generation of supervisors." So today we're talking to Major Ryan Miller from the Overland Park, KS, PD. Ryan is a great leader who spent years in SWAT as an officer, a sergeant, and later as a captain and a major, supervising other leaders. He's a good friend, and often my go-to guy for police leadership questions. In this first part, we'll cover different styles of leadership at the patrol sergeant level, as well as leadership mistakes sergeants sometimes make, like being too rigid or not displaying enough confidence. And don't miss what Ryan says about building a network of peers to reach out to when you have questions. Text a Message to the Show In this episode, I'm talking to Tony Williams, Media Specialist for Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), about the national organization's work with local chapters and the annual Police Week events in Washington, D.C. Tony shares his insights on how COPS helps families of fallen officers heal and rebuild their lives, and offers advice on how you can support their work. Don't miss this important conversation! Resources : National COPS Each year, hundreds of officers die in the line of duty and their families and co-workers are left to cope. C.O.P.S. provides resources to help them rebuild their shattered lives. There is no membership fee to join C.O.P.S., for the price paid is already too high. C.O.P.S. was organized in 1984 with 110 individual members. Today, C.O.P.S. membership is over 67,000 survivors. Survivors include spouses, children, parents, siblings, significant others, and co-workers of officers who have died in the line of duty according to Federal government criteria. C.O.P.S. is governed by a national board of law enforcement survivors. All programs and services are administered by the National Office in Camdenton, Missouri. C.O.P.S. has over 50 chapters nationwide that work with survivors at the grass-roots level. C.O.P.S. programs for survivors include the National Police Survivors' Conference held each May during National Police Week; scholarships; peer-support at the national, state, and local levels; "C.O.P.S. Kids" counseling reimbursement program; the "C.O.P.S. Kids" Summer Camp, "C.O.P.S. Teens" Outward Bound Adventure for young adults, special retreats for spouses, parents, siblings, adult children, extended family, and co-workers; trial and parole support, and other assistance programs. C.O.P.S. knows that a survivor's level of distress is directly affected by the agency's response to the tragedy. C.O.P.S., therefore, offers training and assistance to law enforcement agencies nationwide on how to respond to the tragic loss of a member of the law enforcement profession. Text a Message to the Show Paul Harvey was a radio personality who had a profound impact on me when I was growing up. He would tell the news, add his own commentary, and share one of his famous "the rest of the story" tales. He also occasionally narrated essays, like the one I'll be reading today. Paul Harvey was a huge influence on my speaking style, especially his use of dramatic pauses, seamless segues, and conciseness. The essay I'll be reading today is "A Policeman." It's a topic that was close to Paul Harvey's heart, as his own father was a police officer who was murdered when Paul was just three years old. I've edited the essay slightly to modernize a few bits of his mid-20th century vocabulary, but I've resisted the temptation to mimic Harvey's voice and exact cadence. Otherwise, the text of the essay is unaltered, and I will read it as Harvey did when it was broadcast decades ago. I hope you enjoy. In addition to the above, here are some other facts about Paul Harvey: He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1918. He began his radio career in 1939. He hosted his own radio show, The Rest of the Story, from 1965 until his death in 2009. He was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He is considered one of the most influential radio personalities of all time. Music is by Chris Haugen and by the Westerlies Hey Chaplain Bonus Episode 17 Support the show Thanks for Listening! Text a Message to the Show It's funny that I've published over 70 episodes and bonus episodes about life in law enforcement and I still haven't really done a SWAT episode. Well, I can fix that. Recently my friend Matt Domyancic, the Tactical Chaplain, flew in to Kansas City from California to speak at a SWAT conference. So, I kidnapped him from the convention center and brought him back to my office so I could interview him talking about wellness for SWAT officers. Matt has a tremendous amount of expertise about health in law enforcement. He was an athlete, a cop, and SWAT guy, well educated in multiple wellness related fields and now he is a chaplain in Southern California. Listen closely as Matt lays out some of the good and bad in regard to being healthy as SWAT team member and make sure you catch what he says are good steps that need to be taken, both by the department and by the individual cop. Text a Message to the Show A chaplain is not exactly a morale officer but it's kinda close. I'm deeply concerned about the hearts and minds of my officers and how beaten down they may feel. After the last several years of relentless negativity about law enforcement, I find myself yearning for a voice that is not just positive but one that can be resolute and strong in the face of adversity. So when I heard Dexter Pitts talk about personal responsibility and not letting negative voices redefine who and what you are, that was just what the doctor ordered. Dexter is a cop from Louisville, Kentucky. He's a combat veteran and he has a wide variety of law enforcement experience. But what sets Dexter apart is that when he saw riots burning down his city, he left a job in a peaceful small town to go back and put on riot gear to stand with his fellow brothers and sisters in blue. Dexter has faced all kinds of adversity in his life which we talk about, including family tragedy, racism, and the ongoing argument for what it means to be a cop in America. Dexter's not to speak his mind and people hate him for it, but I bet you're going to love this guy. Text a Message to the Show I don't want to neglect the countless thousands of small agencies in small rural towns across America. So today we're talking to Sheriff Randy Henderson. Sheriff Henderson is from the small city of Hutchinson, out in Reno County, Kansas. The Sheriff has been in law enforcement for over 40 years, including time in narcotics before switching from the police department in town to a very rural Sheriff's Office. Imagine having each patrol deputy cover 300 square miles apiece! Make sure you catch what he says about transitioning from narcotics back to patrol, as well as the story of his signature work of building a new county jail and all of the complicated pieces that went into that achievement. Text a Message to the Show Today we're covering a career topic of interest to some local cops: the opportunity to be assigned to a federal task force. Whether it's for a single operation or it's a multi-year chunk of your career, task force work can be an opportunity to experience a different kind of law enforcement and make great relationships with folks outside of your agency. So this is part one of an interview with Jon Asher a local cop and SWAT guy from a Kansas City suburb, who spent eight years doing high-risk fugitive apprehension with the U.S. Marshals. In this first part, John talks about how he went from a special unit to the task force and how it overlapped with his SWAT team responsibilities. Text a Message to the Show Are we beginning to turn a corner in law enforcement wellness? If we are, at least part of the credit should go to agencies that have begun wellness programs in their departments. The people who run those programs are called wellness officers or wellness coordinators. My guest today, Wendy Hummel, is a retired police detective who came back to law enforcement to be the wellness coordinator at her local Sheriff's Office. We discuss what it takes to be a wellness officer and how to get started. Don't miss what Wendy says picking someone to be that program coordinator, the importance of a peer support program, and what police skills Wendy says helped her start a wellness program in a new agency. Text a Message to the Show A handful of years ago there was a time when police departments could be really funny on social media. It was a more innocent time before everyone decided they were offended all the time at everything. One of the leaders in the public display of cop humor was the Bangor Maine Police Department, whose Facebook page was run by my guest today, Tim Cotton. Tim was a cop for 34 years mostly in Bangor, spending a lot of that time as a detective. His time writing for the Facebook page of his department has led to a second career writing books. Tim talks today about getting started as a writer, living in Maine, and how culture today has taken the humor out of law enforcement. Thankfully, Tim's humor and his earnestness is still solidly intact. Text a Message to the Show Today we talk to Ward Jenkins, when he experiences the devastating loss of his partner being killed in the line of duty. We talk about the the closeness of law enforcement partners, the abuse of alcohol, and Ward's physical and spiritual recovery from this. We also talk about what leads a retired LAPD cop to move to the midwest to begin helping other cops. Obviously the murder of a fellow cop is sensitive subject; be assured that we don't dwell on it long. Listener discretion is advised. Text a Message to the Show This is an example of a great podcast topic emerging unexpectedly from an interview on a different topic. Today you'll hear Part One of my conversation with Ward Jenkins. Text a Message to the Show When we talk about traumatic experiences for first responders we usually talk about those rare events of extreme violence and harm that are seared into the memory. But there are other categories of experiences which can haunt a police officer, like the near miss. What happens when an officer almost pulls the trigger, making a split second decision (correctly) not to shoot? It may surprise some, but these supposed non-events can leave a lasting impression as well. So today we'll talk to two veteran cops about near misses. First you'll hear an account that Major Jim Sutterby told me several months ago, which inspired this episode. I had Captain Joe Grasela listen to it and Joe and I talked about the near miss, about swerving so close to a horrible tragedy. Text a Message to the Show As a football fan, nothing makes me more nervous that ball carrier who is hemmed in but you can tell by his body language that he's looking to lateral the ball to a teammate. That lateral is high risk and can make or break the game. Likewise in law enforcement, feeling hemmed in and trapped can lead to the decision to make a lateral transfer to another department. But how do you know if you should lateral? Is that going to save your law enforcement career or just make you miserable? Today we're talking to Captain Stephen Smith. He has almost 30 years in law enforcement, including a pretty bit lateral from a small department to one ten times bigger, about mid-way through. I asked Steve to come talk to you today about the pros and cons of making a lateral. Text a Message to the Show The average age of an LEO suicide is in their early forties with almost 17 years of experience; so it's not always a young emotional cop who gets overwhelmed by stress and trauma. It's sometimes the older cop, who was stressed out and traumatized years ago but now is unable to stay ahead of it because of age, illness, and life's complications. The warrior mentality pushes the older cop to keep going, even when he or she can't anymore, and something has to give. Maybe this leads to suicide but there are also other ways to self destruct as a cop. Today I'm talking to Norm Wielsch. Norm was a California cop who was successful in his career until PTSI, health problems, and addiction changed his life forever. Norm became a criminal and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. In this first of two parts, we'll discuss the trauma, the medical limitations, and the prescription med addiction that led to him ruining his career and ending up behind bars. This is part of law enforcement that you may not know much about, so Wendy is going to explain what Victim Services does and how kind of resources and services are afforded to victims of crime. Text a Message to the Show Today we're bringing back Matt Domyancic; he's a former LEO and a police chaplain in California and was previously a guest on episode number 018. I was eager to bring him back to talk about "patrol chaplaincy," a term we're using here to describe the chaplaincy work specifically focused on the wellness of the rank and file in law enforcement. Today we talk about competing styles of police chaplaincy and why this particular approach which we are advocating is needs to be given more attention. This episode looks at some of the failures of chaplaincy; it might even address the reason why your agency used to have chaplains years ago but doesn't anymore. I hope this episode challenges and inspires men and women to do the hard work of a patrol chaplain. Text a Message to the Show There is an entire field of investigation that focuses solely on the body of the deceased, how to identify them and how to determine the cause and manner of death. A lot of this work happens at the Medical Examiners office. So today we're talking to Shaun Hachinsky, the Deputy Chief Investigator at the Jackson County ME's Office, in Kansas City, Missouri. Shaun is going to explain what a medical investigator is and what a coroner/medical examiner does. He'll also explain why some deceased get an autopsy and some don't and answer what happens when a body can't be identified. This episode, obviously, is going to be talking about death and dead bodies. Text a Message to the Show Today we're talking to a recently retired detective from Scotland Yard, former Detective Inspector Steve Keogh. Steve spent 30 years working as a cop in London, much of that as a detective investigating murders and other violent crime, as well as the first suicide bombings in the UK. Steve's passion was solving murders by understanding the mindset and patterns of a killer and he continues to teach the lessons to people around the world. Text a Message to the Show On this show, you'll hear people from across the whole spectrum of law enforcement talk about officer wellness: from dispatchers and federal agents, to Sheriffs and US Marshals, as well as local detectives and patrolmen in my hometown of Kansas City. From the LAPD to Scotland Yard, "Hey Chaplain" delivers advice and insights so that police officers everywhere can survive and thrive. My desire is that this podcast will be useful to both officers and their loved ones, as well as to other first responder chaplains, who minister to those who serve. Text a Message to the Show We are joined again by Law Enforcement Chaplain Debra Fontes from Sacramento, California. Debra previously talked to us about Moral Injury in Episode 020 and today she tells us all about Police Week: the memorials, the vigils, the compassion and the camaraderie that sees police and the families of fallen officers come together at the local, state, and national level each May. We talk about what happens during police week and why it's helpful to participate in these ceremonies. Don't miss Debra's insights on the role of a chaplain during the grieving process. Text a Message to the Show Today we're talking about a program to take veterans and first responders to the ocean and teach them how to surf. It's an organization called SWEL and it was created by a an experienced cop who saw the value in surfing to promote health and wellness for other first responders. Text a Message to the Show How do you do a ride along? Today we talk to Jeremiah Holcomb, a new chaplain who just completed his first ride along. Ride alongs are all about building the relationship between the chaplain and police officers. It's perhaps the best way for chaplains to genuinely experience their world, increasing understanding and building rapport and trust. The Ride Along Tips I messaged to Jeremiah : Try to do the whole shift. Ask about the first aid kit in the car, if the officer carries a tourniquet (& where), other safety equipment When asking questions and making conversation, be aware the cop is also listening to the radio Tell the officer you'll obey their commands; at most you'll provide another set of eyes. When an officer knocks on a door, stand where you can see two sides of the house. Don't touch anything, but you can point things out. Don't be a distraction if at all possible; stay in the car, or at least out of the way, during traffic stops - some cops hate ride alongs because they are distracted taking care of the civilian's safety Don't promise citizens anything because you don't know for sure Music is by Chris Haugen Hey Chaplain Podcast Bonus Episode 7 Support the show Thanks for Listening! Text a Message to the Show Today we're talking to Suzie Sawyer, the founder of Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS). She tells us how as a law enforcement spouse in the 1970's and later, she took charge and met a need that law enforcement culture was failing to do on its own. With her great sense of humor and purpose, she relates the inspirational story of how she built an organization from scratch that would memorialize fallen officers and take care of their widows and families. Listen to how law enforcement leadership made the wrong assumptions about grieving families. Text a Message to the Show Helping others may be the calling on your life but it comes at a cost. There is a condition called compassion fatigue, or sometimes secondary traumatization, where the emotional strain of working with those who have been traumatized begins to accumulate and affect our health. Basically, helping others builds up a residue which, if not dealt with in a healthy way, can hurt the helper. Today we're talking to Richard Hartman, who is the lead chaplain at the Fort Wayne Police Department. He discusses his role there supporting officers and as the pastor at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana and how after years of active service, compassion fatigue set in. Listen to how it affected him and how he describes physical and emotional symptoms. Chaplain Hartman is a good example of someone overcoming compassion fatigue but make sure you note how long it took and the many ways that you can battle this condition before it becomes a health crisis for you. Text a Message to the Show Today we're talking about the difficult subject of money. A key component of officer wellness is financial wellness. But many officers find themselves stuck in the overtime cycle, working an unholy number of hours, just to stay afloat, just to pay the monthly bills. Financial stress leads to a host of other problems which can then snowball out of control, leading to all kinds of pain and heartache. Our guest today is Nick Daugherty, the president and owner of FinancialCop. Nick has taught thousands of cops and first responders how to get out of debt and attain financial freedom. Today I'm asking him for his Top 3 Money Moves for Law Enforcement Officers. Text a Message to the Show This shouldn't surprise anyone but cops want to catch bad guys. And when I talk to cops they routinely tell war stories describing how they ran someone down, wrestled them into submission, and heroically made the arrest. Naturally, these fights occupy a lot of headspace. Officers spend a lot of time training for it, they carry equipment, on their person, everyday for different levels of confrontation, and every time it happens, they risk serious injury or worse. I'm getting a good number of these stories in my collection and I want to share a sampling of some of these fights and some of the experience that surrounds it. In this episode you'll hear stories about foot pursuits and wrestling people who are on drugs. And you'll definitely hear the excitement of being in a fight, the rush of adrenaline, and fulfillment of an officer's purpose to apprehend the bad guy. As exciting and even frightening as these fights can be, fighting discouragement can be just as challenging. So stay tuned to the end, where an officer reflects on why they do what they do. This episode is a compilation of interviews, an oral history of life in law enforcement. Contributing to the episode are J. Bauer, M. Boczek, D. Bond, P. Bowman, N. Dempkowski, G. Dorsett, R. Text a Message to the Show Today I want to share with you the story of Doug Monda. Doug was a Florida cop who, after being injured, suddenly had the weight of the job collapse in on him, driving him to despair and, eventually, to putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger. Text a Message to the Show Today I'm taking you to the other side of the police radio, to the communications center, to talk about dispatchers. We'll discuss what's happening during a 911 call from the point of view of the call taker and dispatcher. And we'll ask what do officers sometimes not understand about the job of the person on the other side of the radio? And what is life like for that disembodied voice in the dark? Today I'm talking to Manny DeLeon. He's a supervisor at the Emergency Communications Center in Wyandotte County and he agreed to talk to me about all of this and more. Text a Message to the Show In the past we've have a limited way to talk about trauma and distress which was helped over 40 years ago when we began using the term PTSD in some situations. But this term doesn't fully cover what every first responder might be going through and I want to introduce you to some of these newer terms and concepts. My guest today is Debra Fontes. She is a law enforcement chaplain in Sacramento, California, and trains other chaplains. One of the topics she teaches is the subject of moral injury. Moral injury is not PTSD, although it may occur at the same time or come from the same event. Listen to Debra as she walks me through the similarities and differences between Post Traumatic Stress Injury and Moral Injury. Today you'll hear Debra give encouragement to those who have suffered trauma and challenge police chaplains to speak life and health into our officers' lives. Also listen for the distinction between feeling guilt over something and feeling shame, and what effect that has on an officer at home. Resources : The Moral Injury Workbook by Wyatt R. Text a Message to the Show Today we return to the subject of developing leadership skills through reading great books. I'm a big believer in the idea that we should "think before we speak and we should read before we think." Reading good books is critical to building up good leaders. In an age where many people don't read books hardly at all anymore, let me encourage you to invest time in reading. It's a good way to relax, it engages the brain and specifically the imagination in a way that video never can. And if you don't think you can sit down with a book without falling asleep, at least try an audio book and listen to it while you exercise. My guest today is Captain Joe Grasela. Joe was recommended to me by one of his co-workers and the guest on my last book review episode, Keith Falkner. He told me that Joe was also an avid reader and enthusiastic about learning from history, and that was just about the perfect description. In addition, Joe is also a big fan of podcasts, so this was an easy sell to get him to contribute to the show. Today you'll hear him recommend three books covering a variety of topics from Mountain Climbing to the Civil War to the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Listen to how he draws out leadership lessons from those stories that reflect on his law enforcement background. I'll add in a couple books as well and I'll leave a list of all of the books in the show notes. Books mentioned in this episode : Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer Grant by Ron Chernow Vicksburg is the Key by William L. Shea & Terrance J. Winschel Vicksburg by Donald L. Text a Message to the Show Today I'm talking to Matt Domyancic. Matt was a linebacker and competitive power lifter at the Air Force Academy and Colgate University and was a police officer in Connecticut and the Washington DC area. He was also a Division 1 strength coach at Yale and Georgetown and for the NFL Combine. In law enforcement, he worked patrol, SWAT, and as a full-time police academy instructor and helped with peer support. Today we start by talking about Matt's law enforcement career, a job he absolutely loved. But he was forced out and medically retired before he wanted to go. Just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong with his health, benefits and workman's comp, his medical expenses, etc. etc. But Matt fought hard to get back to a place physically, emotionally, and spiritually, where he could not only go on with his life, but he could go back to coaching others to be well. Matt volunteers as a chaplain in Los Angeles and helps officer and veterans by encouraging better overall wellness, life balance, mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual self-care before first responders experience a breakdown or a crisis. Text a Message to the Show Today I'm talking to Jim Higgins and Detective Rodney Ashley who play the bagpipes in the Kansas City Kansas Police Department Pipe Band. Jim is not a police officer, but he has taught bagpipes to police officers and played for them and with them for several years. Rodney, or RJ, who is a detective in the department, has been playing the bagpipes for five years, taught and coached along by Jim. In recent years, the two of them have been the bagpipers for the police department pipe band. A pipe band usually consists of the pipers and a drum corps, typically snares and a bass drum, which are also played by police officers, all of whom are dressed in full Scottish regalia. Today I ask Jim and RJ, how they each got started playing this loud and unusual instrument. Listen to them describe the work and commitment it takes to bring this meaningful and dramatic element to ceremonies and parades of all kinds. Resources: J. Higgins store - jhiggins.net J. Text a Message to the Show One of the negatives about working in law enforcement is being forced to work holidays; somebody has to be at work to respond to emergencies and keep the community safe. This means that just about every cop has missed important family time, including and especially holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. As I've been recording my interviews with cops, I've asked them about this difficult time and it turns out, as always, to be a wild mix of different experiences and emotions, both good and bad. In this episode we talk about interesting experiences during the holidays. I want you to see in these firsthand accounts that police officers are human too. They miss their families but they also laugh about the strange and wild things they see. Please take note that they really don't want to ruin your special day with the family. They go to work and try to encourage each other, doing silly little things to lighten the mood, and sometimes, they have opportunity to shine a little ray of hope and mercy into otherwise terrible circumstances. This episode is a compilation of interviews, an oral history of life in law enforcement. Contributing to the episode are P. Bowman, M. Domyancic, G. Dorsett, J. Grasela, R. Miller, D. Renfro, J. Stewart, and J. Sutterby. Music is by Kevin MacLeod Hey Chaplain Podcast Bonus Episode 3 Support the show Thanks for Listening! And, as always, pray for peace in our city. Text a Message to the Show Today I'm talking to Special Agent David Renfro, a federal agent for the Treasury Department. David's diverse career took him from being a Federal Air Marshal right after 9/11 to working on joint terrorism task forces and eventually as an investigator with the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, a job he calls the best kept secret in Federal law enforcement. All along the way he had opportunities to do a wide variety of training at FLETC in Glynco, Georgia, a federal training center he recently returned to as a staff member and program manager. This episode gives you a lot of wisdom from David as he talks about the twists and turns of his career. He explains how he decided to make each move and how to prepare for the next step in his career. And hang on to the end where David comments on how he timed his latest career move based on his family dynamics. Text a Message to the Show So, Today I am talking to Ron Miller. Ron was the police chief in both Kansas City and Topeka, Kansas before being appointed by then president Barrack Obama as the U.S. Marshal for the district court in the state of Kansas. Ron has an encyclopedic knowledge of law enforcement and has been a great resource for me learning how law enforcement really works. Today I've narrowed down the topic to just his current job: the U.S. Marshals Service. Listen to Ron explain the nomenclature of who is a marshal and who is a deputy marshal and make sure you catch everything he says as he goes through all the different missions and roles that the Marshals participate in. I love talking to someone like Ron, because without any notes in front of him, he can just lean back and lay out the entire picture, teaching and explaining exactly how the U.S. Marshals fit into the bigger law enforcement picture. Text a Message to the Show Today I am talking to Ginger Howell. Ginger was a police chaplain with the Harris County, TX Sheriff's Office and experienced the line of duty deaths of multiple co-workers, which led to her involvement with Concerns Of Police Survivors. Concerns of Police Survivors, or C.O.P.S., is an organization that provides crucial support to family members of those killed in the line of duty. Ginger continued that work when she moved to the state of Nevada, now serving as a chaplain with the C.O.P.S. chapter in Northern Nevada. I wanted to ask her about some of the services that C.O.P.S. provides including retreats for survivors and support for families of the victim during a murder trial. Text a Message to the Show Today I am talking to Paul Bowman who was the department range master in the 1980's when the Kansas City Police Department transitioned from revolvers to semi-automatic handguns. This transition from over 100 years of one type of gun to a completely different type, is actually one of the biggest changes in law enforcement history. In less than one generation, over 15,000 departments and agencies changed from primarily carrying revolvers to primarily carrying semi autos. And with change comes fear, resistance, and growing pains. Paul and I made an effort here to talk about guns in a way that is accessible to non-shooters. I want people who are unfamiliar with some of these guns and their histories to be able to follow along, while still giving experienced shooters enough new information to keep them engaged too. And I think we did a pretty good job of it too, although I had a hard time reigning in my enthusiasm. Paul is just one of those guys with whom it's fun to talk about guns. Text a Message to the Show Today I am talking to Sheriff Don Ash. Don is retiring after getting elected three times as Sheriff of Wyandotte County, Kansas, and that came after a 35 year career in the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. Don is a well respected leader and man of faith; he's approaching 50 years in law enforcement. If you have aspirations to be a leader of an organization, perhaps the place you're at now or a different one, take a moment and soak up this wisdom. Moving from a merit or seniority based system to campaigning for a public office is a big leap and Don has a lot of wisdom about how to approach this transition. He also offers insight on how to navigate moving into a new agency, in this case from the police department to the top job at the Sheriff's Office. Text a Message to the Show Today I am talking to Jonathon Westbrook, a police officer in Kansas City, Kansas, who was selected to be a White House Fellow. The White House Fellows program is one of the most prestigious programs for leadership and public service in the country, where young people, usually in the early 30's, are selected to work for one year alongside White House staff, Cabinet Secretaries, and other top-ranking government officials. The selection process is extremely competitive and over the last 50+ years, former White House Fellows have risen to the highest levels of military service, government, and private industry. Becoming a White House Fellow would be the most notable item on just about anybody's resumé but today I want you to hear Jonathon's humility and heart for service. Listen for the different ways that he contributed to the betterment of his department as a police officer and the unique paths his law enforcement career has gone. I hope Jonathon's example encourages you to think outside the box about the ways you can improve yourself and improve your community as a law enforcement officer. I ask these officers to describe the worst car they have ever driven and, look out, the venerable Crown Victoria makes the list more than once. Ginger is the executive director and founder of the Soup Ladies, a nonprofit that feeds first responders during crisis situations in the Pacific Northwest and around the country. She is also a trained chaplain with two police departments and two fire departments in the Seattle area. In my conversation with her today, Ginger explains how this extraordinary ministry got started and what it looks like when they take food and love to police and firefighters in extreme scenarios, including fires, search and rescue, line of duty deaths, and Antifa riots. Make sure you note her rare combination of talent, experience, and loving devotion to first responders. And listen to what she says it takes to start an amazing program like this in your city. Text a Message to the Show Today I have with me Teresa Gallegos and Dustin Dierenfeldt, the vice-president and president (respectively) of the Kansas chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors. Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) is an organization that provides both short term and long term support to the surviving family members of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. This episode will not be a detailed account of any line of duty deaths, but rather the focus will be on the survivors: the family members and co-workers and their stories of loss. Listen to Teresa and Dustin explain what their experience was like and how it impacted them. Notice how they use that terrible experience in a positive manner to reach out to other survivors in a way that most of us can't begin to understand. Text a Message to the Show In the television show "The Rookie," actor Nathan Fillion plays a man in his 40's who dramatically changes his life by joining the LAPD, becoming a rookie cop who is twenty years older than his fellow rookies. The television show is based on a true story and is also representative of many other officers across the country who decided to join the police department in their late 30's and early 40's. Today I'm joined by Jim Spellman. Similar to "the Rookie", Jim joined the Los Angeles Police Department at age 39 after spending most of his adult life as a pastor in a church. Listen to him describe the draw he felt toward doing police work but also notice how, even before policing, he was always helping people. Text a Message to the Show It's been said that we should "think before we speak and we should read before we think." Reading good books is critical to building up good leaders. And while there are countless business leadership books out there filled with pop psychology, surprising statistics, celebrity name-dropping, and tear-jerking illustrations, I think the best leadership books are actually from military history, especially memoirs and biographies of ordinary people who rose to the occasion in extraordinary situations. My guest today is Captain Keith Falkner. He's an army veteran, a captain in the patrol division at the Kansas City Kansas Police Department and someone who loves to read military history. I love talking to people like this who have read extensively on the same topics that I've been enjoying my whole life. I hope you'll enjoy it too. Text a Message to the Show Defund the Police?! There is a significant number of people in the world today who think that police forces are problematic and need to be defunded. What does this mean and what would be the consequences of this drastic action? My guest today is Paul Vander Klay. Paul is a pastor of a church in California and a cultural commentator on YouTube, with thousands of followers who watch him break down Jordan B. Peterson videos from a Christian perspective. As a fan of his work, I reached out to him and asked him to comment on this issue, to which he graciously agreed. Text a Message to the Show What is a police chaplain? In simplest terms, a chaplain is a like a priest or a pastor who is attached to an organization like a hospital or the military. In my case, I volunteer with the local police department. A chaplain gets called out to unattended deaths, which means homicides, suicides, accidents, and natural deaths where there was no doctor or hospice care. A chaplain also makes death notifications. And a chaplain builds relationships with the officers by being present as they serve our community. This podcast is intended to provide wisdom, support, and encouragement to law enforcement officers and their families. You can help by subscribing, leaving a 5-star review, telling a friend, and praying for me and the officers I serve.
