There is a growing crisis of representation as Black women's voices are systematically erased from mainstream media. This episode examines the concerning pattern of cancellations affecting prominent Black women journalists and content creators, from Joy Reid's MSNBC show to NPR's "Louder than a Riot" podcast. I share why diverse perspectives are crucial for accurate storytelling, analyze the rise of independent media platforms as alternatives, and discuss sustainable models for creating accessible content. Community building costs money. In this episode, I explore how IRL events and social platforms have transformed the way we build relationships, create communities, and derive value from our connections. I’m pulling from my own experience and reflections from a few sources listed below. I’m sharing real world examples of the cost and potential revenue associated with building paid memberships and hosting in-person events as well as variations on the types of online communities that connect in real life. I also talk about ways to build authentic relationships online (read = slide into those comments and DMs!). I grew up watching KeKe Palmer, and I'm happy to see her still thriving in the media and arts industry. She may be just another Hollywood actor to some, but I think she's one of the best examples of an indie creator multihyphenate. I'll break down where I see her current creative career, and give some ideas for where I think she's headed. Young mothers and millennials, this one is for you. After all, Baby this is Keke Palmer! This deep dive came highly requested on YouTube! I'm diving into the world of celebrity podcast by sharing an unlikely take on Shannon Sharpe's show, Club Shay Shay. There are many ways to fund independent creative projects or even new business ventures. Crowdfunding isn't one I see talked about much. I'm not a start-up, so all the think pieces on raising venture capital didn't really apply to me. I did a crowdfund for my first independent short film, and I share my thoughts on what worked, what didn't, and what you should consider if you're looking to leverage your community to help start your next big idea! Kasem Rodriguez Mohsen is one of the co-founders of Equilibrium Ventures, a venture capital fund based in Winston-Salem, NC. Venture capital isn't typically a space where minority founders are successful, and not all funders have been entrepreneurs themselves. I was super interested in Kasem's perspective on business funding, as he's been a serial entrepreneur who's had 3 exits (aka sold his businesses). This intimate conversation on our relationships with money, innovation, ourselves, each other, and the future of raising capital is one that left me with contentment and admiration for his journey. I wanted to honor his lived experience, successes, and failures. In this special financial roundtable episode of Honey & Hustle, I am joined by Andrea Inoken and Corey Barbour to discuss grant funding and securing commercial loans. While offering free money to businesses, grants can be highly competitive. Entrepreneurs should align their business with organizations that match their industry or geographical location to enhance their chances of securing grants successfully. Grants also often come with post-award reporting obligations. Entrepreneurs must understand the reporting expectations and be ready to demonstrate how the grant funds were utilized and the impact they had on the business. Corey emphasized the importance of evaluating their capacity to repay the loan and the character of the borrower. Understanding your cash flow and financial position is essential before taking on debt. This aligns with the idea of being prepared to answer questions about how the loan will be repaid and demonstrating a track record of responsible financial behavior. Want to learn more? Creating spaces where everyone feels safe and welcomed is crucial for people to be their best selves. From her restaurants to her annual 5K run on Dia de los Muertos, she shares how intimacy plays a role in community building. In this insightful episode of Honey and Hustle, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ed Ross, the founder of Core AI. Our conversation delved into the nuances of authentic leadership and the transformative power of effective communication in the workplace. Ed emphasized that time does not equate to experience or expertise, and that individuals should be encouraged to lead in areas where they excel. We explored the importance of storytelling in presentations and how it can make information more memorable and engaging. Ed provided valuable insights into how every conversation, whether it's with a large audience or a one-on-one interaction, counts towards building relationships and influencing others. A particularly touching story was shared about Ed's mentor, Connie, who played a pivotal role as a sponsor in his career by providing support and opportunities for growth. This story highlighted the difference between a manager, a mentor, and a sponsor, and the profound impact a sponsor can have on an individual's professional journey. We also touched on the challenges faced by Black founders in raising capital and how Ed has navigated this landscape with the support of angel investors and strategic partnerships. The episode concluded with a rapid-fire Q&A session, where Ed shared his indispensable business tool, his alternative career choice (which is none, as he loves what he does), and a description of his brand, which is all about authenticity and helping others. In this special bonus episode of the Honey & Hustle podcast, Dane Cardiel, the founder of GoodTape and a member of the Gumball team shares his perspective on community fractures in podcasting and discusses the importance of innovation in marketing efforts. We recorded this episode at Resonate Podcast Festival, the perfect backdrop for this conversation about podcasting and podcast monetization. We delve into the importance of understanding the depth of audience affinity to a show in the podcast industry. While downloads can indicate the scale of a show, they may not be the best metric for determining the audience's affinity. Advertisers really want to know if an ad campaign effectively reaches the audience and if that audience converts. We raise the question of whether there is a resurgence of physical media, such as vinyl records and cassette tapes, and how this may impact the podcasting industry. This conversation truly highlights the historical overlap between print and audio, and the desire for a separate and tangible media experience. Dane shares how the skills and knowledge gained in newspaper journalism can be applied to audio production and storytelling. It’s not often I get to record a conversation with a friend just because, but I’m happy I recorded this one with Flo Lumsden. Maybe you’ve heard of her? She’s the founder of Chorus Studios and co-host of the Why Raleigh? Podcast. We talked about: creating branded B2B podcasts some of our favorite video podcasts digital tools and platforms we’re using and playing around with And probably a lot more because we were just relaxing and talking shop. Tell me if you'd like more casual talks like this! I’d like to do more casual founder talks that aren’t necessarily about any one thing in particular, just breaking down how we’re trying to build our creative businesses. --- Submit a Question: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/question Join Our Community on Substack: https://pleasehustleresponsibly.substack.com/ Use Our Affiliate Links: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/digitaltools Sponsor The Podcast: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/sponsors Buy The Interview Workbook for Storytellers: https://www.blurb.com/b/11662269-interview-workbook-for-storytellers Subscribe To Our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/AngelaHollowell Follow Us On Twitter: https://twitter.com/honeyandhustle Connect With Angela on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelahollowell/ Mentioned in this episode: Join the Community on Substack! Liberation Station is a children's book store that was created on the belief that youth need a safe space for discovery. A space centered in humanity, joy, and curiosity. A physical space located in downtown Raleigh in view of the capital building made for the perfect location in the eyes of Victoria Scott-Miller and her family. Starting with bringing curated books and folding table to pop-up events and transitioning to online sales made Victoria feel like they were being "stretched in a way that minimized our presence." We talked about the importance of taking up space and how challenging a system that bans books is in her DNA. She brings her childhood of listening to Juicy J and Three 6 Mafia to her confident approach to designing a space that anyone can feel safe to learn, read, and grow. Durham's first sweet hub has landed in historic East Durham. Stacey Ramos is the founder of Bull City Sweet Shoppe, and the lead curator of the confections that are featured in her shop form herself and other businesses in the area. In getting a brick and mortar location, she had to weigh so many questions – When should we think about hiring? Which businesses fit our model? What is the cost of doing business in a physical location? All of those questions are centered in her belief that whether you're a boss or an employee, you're life shouldn't revolve around work. Stacey knew from the age of 15 that she wanted to be an entrepreneur, and while her path wasn't linear, she has a wealth of experiences that have contributed to her current success. In this episode, she's candid about her struggles, how she learned what she didn't want to embody as a boss, and how lifelong learning is integral to her success (and anyone's success) as an entrepreneur. Accepting that debt could benefit his business is a financial mindset shift that Chi Yiu made during his journey in entrepreneurship. Being afraid of failure and not wanting to be in a position to be fired from a job are powerful motivators to exploring different approaches to making your business successful. Chi founded Wood + Water Studio in 2018 and has since become a champion of affordable housing solutions that meet the present-day needs of the Triangle community. A former East Carolina University student turned kitchen and bath remodeling company owner, Chi has created a business from his passion, rather than running from it (as he did for quite some time). Our conversation revealed his love for mentorship, relationship development, design, and lifelong learning. I can’t wait for you to learn why he started his business, the challenges he overcame in managing a team, and what’s next on the horizon for Wood + Water. Jennifer and Tina have come a long way from their “sausage wagon” days, but their goal has remained the same: supporting local farmers in getting their meat on your kitchen table. Jennifer Curtis, the co-founder of Firsthand Foods, knows the importance of taking a risk alongside farmers. Having a healthy relationship with the food you eat, including the knowledge of where it comes from, can prove to be incredibly transformative. It certainly has been in her life. From policy advocacy to direct relationships with farmers, consumers, and chefs, being vocal about improving the quality and sustainability of local meats is no small task for this B-corp certified organization. Firsthand Foods is working to change the narrative around local food ecosystems, one piece of meat at a time. You may even know some of their local partners – Bull City Burger, Pizzeria Toro, and Longleaf Swine to name a few. With over $1.2 million going to farmers in 2022, they’re just getting started in amplifying the impact of sustainable meat-sourcing practices. Black farmers are losing land at an alarming rate in the United States. Hearing the struggles of Black farmers in North Carolina during the pandemic prompted the founders of Tall Grass Food Box to ask themselves, “ What is our role in their sustainability?” Derrick Beasley, Gabrielle Carter, and Gerald Harris came together to aggregate food and produce from Black farmers across North Carolina in a community-supported agriculture (or CSA) food box, with one-off or seasonal subscription purchasing options. With an immediate, positive response from the community following the launch of the project, the demand for more infrastructure to make this collaborative effort long-term grew significantly. Through fiscal sponsorship and the help of The Bulls of Durham, they have been able to secure a refrigerated truck to transport produce for local pick-up and expand their service area throughout the Triangle. Tall Grass Food Box has created an entry point for people of all ages to grow their relationship with their local food system, an entrepreneurial pursuit in food sovereignty. Lie + Loft is a brand at the intersection of golf, interior design, and art. The founder, Luke Davis, makes this multi-passionate venture look as easy as enjoying being a homebody on a chilly, winter day. However, pushing through self-doubt without a co-founder as a sounding board has presented him with challenges along the way. It took him 1 year to get his first online customer, proving that building an e-Commerce brand is a long-term endeavor. From his first in-person sales at golf tournaments and golf resorts around the country, he’s stayed true to creating a memorable customer experience from start to finish. By recognizing that photography and hand-written notes are still hallmarks of brand connection online and through the mail, he’s created a community of “homies” who continue to support his work to this day. Sometimes, the best thing to do is start something bananas with other crazy people who believe it can work. Crystal Driesbach is the founder and executive director of Don’t Waste Durham and Green To Go, a nonprofit and subsidiary organization focusing on reusable products and the circular economy. By structuring her startup under a nonprofit umbrella, she’s been able to take more risks up front and explore an abundance of funding opportunities that wouldn’t be as readily available to a for-profit company. With partnership opportunities, an incredible board of directors, and a unique value proposition for restaurants, Crystal has helped create a pathway to make systemic change in reuse culture by making the first step in this behavioral change accessible. Using language that’s accessible and inviting to anyone, Omari Akil of Colorway Game Labs has successfully been able to highlight aspects of Black culture through board games. A graphic designer and creative by trade, Omari branched into the world of tabletop design when he and his brother realized that there weren’t many games made with storylines featuring people that looked like them. Through capitalizing on board game events and conferences, he and his brother were able to get market feedback directly from their target audience in real-time for their first game, Rap Godz. This helped them quickly implement changes and make reiterations in their games to bring them to market faster. Omari shares insider tips and his approach to making changes to tabletop games quickly, niche crowdfunding sites for game projects, and how to take advantage of the different formats available today to create a physical game. By incorporating joy, fun, community, and rest into their gameplay, they’ve made a brand that anyone can enjoy. We often think of infrastructure in the largest of senses: Topher has flipped the idea of a huge building for multifamily housing on its head by specifically targeting the creation of accessory dwelling units (ADUs).
