Resisting Climate Apocalypse with Last Generation
Depressing but true: we’re hurtling toward human-caused climate collapse and our political-economic system, captured by capitalist elites intent on squeezing out profits until the day our civilization collapses, is effectively incapable of responding by itself. It must be forced: but how? Petitions haven’t worked. Rallies haven’t worked. Posting on Instagram hasn’t worked. And ****ing up pipelines, sexy though it might be, hasn’t worked. So while purists call for mass eco-insurgency and liberals circulate change.org petitions, the A22 Network has responded by organizing and mobilizing huge numbers of committed militants around the Western world, using large-scale civil disobedience as a tactic to push governments to adopt basic climate policies. These tactics have been controversial but successful: Just Stop Oil, the British branch of A22 perhaps best known for throwing soup at a Van Gogh, recently disbanded itself because its main demand — that the UK government cease approving any new oil and gas exploitation projects — has been adopted. In Episode 81 we chat with Laura Sullivan, a spokesperson for Last Generation Canada, which is the Canadian branch of the A22 Network. We talk about Last Generation’s demands, the tactics used by the group, combating the freeze response often provoked by discussions of climate collapse, and preparing for revolutionary conditions as things inevitably deteriorate. Psychiatry, Psychedelics and the Maps We Carry with Rose Cartwright
Plagued from a young age by disturbing intrusive thoughts and unable to control dangerous compulsive behaviours, 3 Body Problem screenwriter and best-selling author Rose Cartwright was immensely relieved to learn that she had a disease called OCD, which was caused by a chemical imbalance in her brain and could be easily treated with a pill. She became the UK’s poster girl for recovery from OCD, and even wrote a book called Pure —later adapted into a TV show—about the success of the psychiatric model in treating her disorder. But years later, having sunk back into chronic suicidality, she struggled with the fact that this model hadn’t really produced any kind of long term relief. Then she discovered something astounding: that there is no biological basis for most of the disorders in the DSM, and the ‘chemical imbalance’ theory of mental illness had been quietly discredited years ago. She embarked on a quest to understand what was going on, resulting in her groundbreaking book The Maps We Carry: Psychedelics, Trauma, and Our New Path to Mental Health . When they grow up and search for resources on what happened to them, what they are most likely to find is terabytes of pornography. When they write about their experiences, they are siloed into the realm of self-help and excluded from the realm of politics. Identity Crisis: Identity Politics vs Identitarianism
In Episode 51, we discuss Black American English, also known as AAVE, as a way to consider some of the differences between identitarian and identity politics approaches. Black American English is minority dialect in the United States of America. The identitarian approach to protecting Black American English typically involves appropriation discourse and the restriction of who can use Black American English on the basis of racial idenity. We offer another approach, one based in identity politics, which treats Black American English as a minority language deserving of legal protection and recognition. This approach does not restrict who can learn or speak Black American English, but does insist there are correct and incorrect ways to speak it, and, more importantly, focuses on the rights of native Black American English speakers, regardless of racial identity. In Episode 8, we sit down with US-based media psychologist Dr. Christine Marie to discuss her research paper titled The Traumatic Impact of Media Humiliation, Misrepresentation and Victim-Shaming on Narrative Identity and Well-Being. We unpack the traumatic impact of media campaigns of humiliation and misrepresentation, including Dr. Marie's findings that these campaigns produce symptoms indicative of Complex PTSD. We explore the psychological distancing and victim blaming methods people use to justify their mistreatment of those targeted by these campaigns. Refusing to be Accountable: Responsibility, Boundaries, Intervention and Punishment
In Episode 6, we discuss different situations in which people hurt others and feel hurt by others, what distinguishes one type of such an experience from another, and what sorts of responses are appropriate. We unpack the terms ‘harm’ and ‘accountability’, often used in the Nexus but seldom defined, and tease apart some of the unstated assumptions underlying them. Principles Before Personalities: An Introduction to Fucking Cancelled
In Episode 1, we introduce ourselves and share some of our own experiences with cancel culture.
