This week on the HappyCast, we talk all things hockey with our favorite runner from up north, Trevor Meding! Not really, though. As cool as that would be, we decide to discuss the latest edition of Southern States 200 with Trevor, who just ran the race and is slowly recovering from his epic trek from Georgia to Alabama. The Southern States 200 is the only point-to-point mountain race east of the Rockies. With 85% of the race taking place on the Pinhoti trail, and a shade under 28,000ft of climbing, this is an epic, scenic and “runnable” 200 miler. We talk to Trevor about his experience on the course, his strategies, and shockingly, how it was to run the ENTIRE race with no crew OR drop bags. Yes, he carried EVERYTHING he had on his back, which apparently was only “7-8lbs”. As someone who enjoys running alone, we also hear about Trevor’s experience running with three other men who eventually were dubbed “the four amigos”. We also dive deep into his epic sprint at the end to finish sub-72 hours. We discuss all of this and more, on another epic edition of the HappyCast! Don’t forget to check out Trevor’s blog that goes over his races: #ultrarunningdad Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. In this episode of HappyCast , we welcome Kathryn “Kat” Stewart , Charmin McKee , and Gus Rodriguez —three incredible ultrarunners who completed the 2024–25 Lone Star Slam . This ambitious challenge—completing six 100-mile races across Texas in just eight months, including Habanero Hundred, Cactus Rose, Dinosaur Valley, Brazos Bend, Rocky Raccoon, and Grasslands—sets the stage as the crew dives deep into what it takes to conquer the Slam. Each guest shares what got them into the challenge and how their motivation evolved with every race. Charmin juggled a demanding job and motherhood while using trail running as her personal outlet. Kat transformed the challenge into a fundraising campaign for her daughter’s rare genetic condition. Gus embraced the Slam as a way to discover new parts of Texas and test his pacing strategy across diverse terrain. From dancing into aid stations to sleepwalking into emotional breakthroughs, this episode reveals how joy, grit, and community can carry runners through the darkest miles. The crew reflects on their highs and lows—from near DNFs and energy drink-fueled hallucinations to ghost energy (both literal and figurative) and the dreaded terrain of Cactus Rose . With stories of unconventional nutrition (shoutout to chicken salad, Bobos, and Ghost Energy), sandal running legends, and surprising race favorites, this conversation captures the spirit of ultrarunning in its most rugged and rewarding form. The HappyCast team takes on the Rabid Raccoon 100 , an ultra in Pennsylvania that delivered relentless mud, unpredictable storms, and plenty of surprises. Stephanie Leake shares her emotional journey through the race, from navigating steep climbs and descents to finding strength in her crew and pacers. Ultimately conquering her fear of the mud with the help of trekking poles. Rachel Moore joins the conversation to break down her first-place finish and new course record , sharing insights into her pacing strategy, mental approach, and the moment she realized she had won. Jason Hanley and Kathleen Hanley played a huge role in keeping the runners going , with Kathleen stepping in as Stephanie’s pacer and teaching her how to use trekking poles effectively in the deep mud. Jason, who was also crewing and pacing, kept a close eye on race standings and played a key role in confirming Rachel’s frontrunner status before she crossed the finish line. Their crew experience, patience, and humor helped keep spirits high through long, wet, and grueling miles. From first-time pacers to seasoned runners, the team dives into the camaraderie and perseverance that make 100-milers so special. They reflect on the women’s buy-one-get-one entry initiative that brought six Texas women to the event, the seamless crew logistics with an indoor start/finish area , and the small yet fierce competition that kept the field moving. They also discuss frogs, unexpected fan encounters, and the importance of community in the ultrarunning world. This week on a special edition of the HappyCast, we have our Arizona Monster 300 race and course preview episode! This race is the newest, biggest, and baddest race in the ultra (ultra) distance running world. This is Destination Trail’s first 300+ mile race, and the hype surrounding this event has been palpable. Selling out in a matter of days a year ago can do that. With race day (April 4) fast approaching, we talk all things Arizona Monster. The crew is joined by four special guests who all chime in about the race and some of their biggest questions going into it. Rachel Bambrick returns to the podcast to talk about her mindset entering the race. Three-time podcast guest Garren Hill joins us again along with his daughter Emily Hill as they talk about training together and running the race together, with some competition mixed in. And finally, Carol Northrup, who is no stranger to the Arizona Trail, talks about her experience doing recon of the course. She has hiked the Arizona Trail before as well, so she sheds some light on what to expect during our course preview. She has probably done more recon of the course recently than anyone around! With less than a month to go until race day, the anticipation is reaching an all-time high. Join us as well all share our nervous excitement together and talk about the upcoming experience and what to expect. In this episode of HappyCast , we welcome ultra runners Chuck Clark and Ben Bridgeman to recount their epic (and sometimes disastrous) attempt at running two brutal 100-mile races just two weeks apart: Outlaw 100 and Lovit 100 . What started as a simple challenge turned into a saga of icy wipeouts, brutal climbs, poor life choices, and a whole lot of stubbornness. From navigating Jeep roads littered with boulders at Outlaw to dealing with a brand-new course layout at Lovit, the guys break down the highs, the lows, and everything in between—including the moment when Ben took an all-time classic fall that had his friends doubled over in laughter. With course changes, extreme conditions, and the mental battle of pushing through back-to-back races, Chuck and Ben share their strategies (and mistakes) in managing fatigue, staying fueled, and making sure they crossed the finish line. Along the way, they discuss why pacing each other sometimes feels more like a competition than teamwork, why the smallest aid station breaks can kill your race time, and what it’s like watching your friend’s race completely fall apart in real-time. Plus, we debate the age-old ultra-running question: Is it better to go out fast or play it safe? And, of course, no episode is complete without some well-earned roasting, a look ahead at future races, and the latest Can’t Let It Go segment. Tune in for an episode filled with laughs, lessons, and the kind of suffering only ultra-runners willingly sign up for! This week on HappyCast , it’s just the core trio—Andrew, Dylan, and our very own Stephanie Leake, who takes center stage to share the wildest race recap we’ve had in a while. Stephanie traveled to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on her 17th 100-mile finish, expecting a straightforward timed event. What she got instead? A logistical rollercoaster involving sand-filled shoes, an unexpected rainstorm, a mid-race existential crisis, and—oh yeah—the race director canceling the event while she was still on course. With no volunteers, no aid stations, and only an email notification to signal the end of the race (which, let’s be honest, no ultra-runner is checking mid-race), Stephanie had a choice: pack it in, or keep going and hope for the best. Spoiler: she kept going. Along the way, she met some incredible runners, took her first-ever trail nap, and discovered just how far sheer stubbornness and a little bit of fear can carry you when you’re determined to finish what you started. We break down the drama, debate the ethics of continuing after a race is called, and discuss what race directors should do in situations like this. Plus, we dive into a major controversy in the ultra world—how illegal running shoes got a USATF champion disqualified—and wrap things up with our signature “Can’t Let It Go” segment, featuring some hot takes on running gear (RIP Stephanie’s favorite hydration vest). Would you have kept running? Would you have even checked your email? Tune in, and let us know! In this episode of the Happy Cast, hosts Stephanie Leake, Dylan Rueff, and Andrew Marvin sit down with ultra runner Steph Smith , who has taken the trail-running world by storm—by running 100-mile races in Crocs . From her early days as a marathoner to her first ultra, Steph shares how she discovered her love for endurance racing and why traditional running shoes never quite worked for her. After experimenting with barefoot running and minimalist sandals, she made the switch to Crocs and has never looked back. We dive into the mechanics of running in Crocs, the modifications she’s made (including adding rugged Vibram soles), and how they compare to traditional running shoes. Steph also shares her experiences at races like the Badger 100, Midwest States 100, and Tuscobia Winter Ultra , where she’s tested the limits of both herself and her unconventional footwear. Plus, we discuss the ultrarunning community, the importance of race traditions, and the mental strength it takes to keep going—whether you’re running in Crocs or not. We’re back for season 4 of the HappyCast! On this episode, the gang recaps their holiday shenanigans, such as Dylan preparing for Rocky Raccoon 100, Stephanie doing the annual Dallas to Cowtown run in hopes of redemption, and Andrew running the incredible Snowdrop 55 hour event for children’s cancer in Houston. And in the main segment, Andrew and Stephanie recap an amazing Bandera 100k down in Texas. One of the largest and earliest Western States qualifying races, Bandera was moved due to weather concerns to the infamous Camp Eagle. The gang recaps their time running an aid station along with our friends at Wildsense, and they share some incredible stories. And finally, because we’re trying to be more “organized and professional” this season, the gang does a separate segment and hear from the course record asterisk man himself, Hans Troyer*, on his incredible 50k, and from Aimee Jacobs on her first place 100k finish and her disdain for stopping at aid stations. Buckle up for an episode full of laughter, reflection, and incredible trail vibes as Dylan Rueff and Stephanie Leake take you on a journey through the Indiana Trail 100, the only 100-mile ultramarathon in the Hoosier State. Known for its welcoming community and scenic yet approachable trails, this race is a favorite among runners seeking camaraderie and a challenge. With its 25-mile looped course through Chain O’Lakes State Park, the Indiana Trail 100 offers participants lush forests, lakeside views, and a surprising amount of fun despite its reputation for mud (and sometimes brutal weather). For Stephanie, it was also the next step in her ambitious goal of running 100 miles in all 50 states. The race itself was a masterpiece of community and camaraderie. Stephanie spills all the details about racing logistics, running with friends, and making unforgettable memories—all while navigating a whirlwind of hilarious mishaps. From arriving at an Airbnb with no Wi-Fi to dealing with forgotten gear and last-minute exams, this race recap is as much about the chaos as it is about the triumphs. Alongside her friend Brandy, she powered through muddy trails, indulged in the over-the-top aid station treats (pork mac and cheese, anyone?), and soaked in the vibrant trail running culture that made the Indiana Trail 100 feel like so much more than just a race. Through it all, Stephanie reflects on finding joy in the miles, embracing the unexpected, and leaning into the incredible support of the trail running community. With her pacer Patrick stepping in at the perfect moment to lift her spirits, and Arturo moving mountains (or at least cars) to keep the crew together, this adventure was equal parts grit, gratitude, and good times. Whether you’re here for the laughs, the inspiration, or the insider tips on tackling 100-milers, this episode promises a glimpse into the magic of the trails—and maybe even a tip or two about caramel M&Ms. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. This week on the HappyCast, we recap the most recent Moab 240, which ended up being one of the hottest years on record! Our very own Andrew was sent over to volunteer and was on-site for over a week witnessing the beauty and carnage of this race. But more importantly, and impressively, we have Jess Greene join us to recap her experience. This was Jess’ 5th Moab experience, so we get to deep-dive in what it’s like running this race that many times, how this year proved more challenging than others, and whether or not there is an end in sight for her Moab career. At the end of her appearance on this episode, she talks about her start in Ultrarunning, and how like others out there, she had not athletic background and was out of shape. Her inspiring words paint us a picture of how anyone has the ability to accomplish big goals, not matter where they start in life, as long as they have the right mindset and drive going forward. She encourages others to reach out to her for advice as well. This is one of her passions in Ultrarunning, so we were honored to hear more about it. And in the second half of this episode, Andrew talks about his Moab experience, from volunteering to pacing, and all the wild things in between. And does the infamous pool party boy himself show up to say his piece? Was Andrew too mean to Aaron Kubala during Moab? Will there be retribution? Find out on this jam-packed episode of the Moab 240! On this week’s episode of the HappyCast, we are joined by returning guest AND recently crowned Bigfoot 200 winner, Jessica Schiller! This was Jessica’s first 200 mile race, and she was up against some stiff competition. This year, Bigfoot 200 had a major reroute last minute after a file broke out near the middle of the course. So instead of the traditional point-to-point 200+ mile course that traverses around the Cascades, folks were challenged with a double out-and-back course that had them do one of the hardest sections of the entire race not once, but four times! We talk to Jessica about the challenges that this reroute provided, and how she was able to mentally stay focused and run her own race. Jessica also preaches the importance of just doing what she set out to do, and not focusing on anything else. She considers herself just a regular, “normal” runner that had a goal in mind and set out to achieve it. A consequence of that goal may have been winning the race, but her main focus was on just being able to run her own race the entire time. From battling the elements, the mental challenges, and having a surprise pacer (Mika Thewes) pace her to a 1st place finish, we hear it all. And since she’s a friend of the show, some attempted derailments may or may not have occurred. This week on the HappyCast, we sit down with the first EVER finisher of the Mighty Gallatin seven-day stage run, Connor McClelland, fresh off of his flight back home to San Diego, and go in-depth with his experience and everything it took to get him to be the first person ever to finish all seven days. The Mighty Gallatin is a seven-day stage run that takes place in Montana, and is put on by Helgi Olafson. This was the third year of this event, and until now, no one was able to finish. This year, the event covered 280 miles and around 80,000ft of vertical gain. In the past, it has approached closer to 350 miles, with adjustments made due to inclement weather and other obstacles. This is a borderline self-supported event, with self navigation being required. This year, volunteers helped with setting up some aid stations and providing support throughout the race. This is a very difficult, yet gorgeous and rewarding undertaking, and is limited to around 15 runners that are hand-picked by Helgi. Connor details his success and struggles, and the camaraderie that took place in order to get him across the finish line. From a bear encounter, to a frightening thunder, lightening, and hail storm that almost derailed his race, Connor covers every facet of this race. Hear what it took for the Mighty McClelland to finish this epic journey! And remember, in his own words, “WE finished this race”, as the community around the event pulled together to do whatever it took to get him home. This week on the HappyCast, the crew ramble on about a variety of topics as they all prepare for a very busy next few weeks. In the first segment, Dylan and Stephanie do a check-in with returning guest favorite, Regina Massingill, as she describes the comedy of errors that ensued during her Muleshoe 60k night race over the weekend. Her new favorite thing just might be racing in the middle of the night without any hydration and only a flashlight guiding her. Her experience helps shed light on how some of us are able to overcome adversity and still have some fun with it, and that even experienced runners are still prone to epic mistakes. For the second segment, Andrew hops on as the crew all talk about their upcoming goals and some training updates. And, of course, the importance of running with professional grade “poop bags”, since that’s apparently a requirement at Badwater 135, a race that Stephanie talks about preparing to crew for. Dylan provides some updates for his return to racing, with Sufferfest just a few weeks away, and Andrew gets candid and honest about his struggles and concerns about recovery and some doubts about his health with Bigfoot 200 just a few weeks away. It’s a hodgepodge this week as the HappyCast provides a little bit of everything, from overcoming struggles, to embracing new ones, and all that lies in between. In the latest heart-stirring episode of HappyCast, join Stephanie as she takes on the formidable Copper Kings 100, an awe-inspiring mountain race crafted by ultra-runner Wes Plate. Set in the picturesque town of Butte, Montana, this race is not for the faint of heart—marked by its "fatass" style, it challenges runners with no aid stations and no course markers, demanding resilience and raw endurance. Central to this episode and the race itself is Butte's towering landmark, Our Lady of the Rockies. This 90-foot statue of the Virgin Mary, perched atop the Continental Divide, stands as a beacon of hope and perseverance for the runners. Conceived as a tribute to all women, especially mothers, the statue overlooks the city from over 8,500 feet above sea level, embodying the spirit of community and undying faith. As Stephanie navigates the unmarked trails of the Copper Kings 100, the imposing silhouette of Our Lady of the Rockies serves not only as a literal landmark guiding her through the night but also as a metaphorical guide through the challenges of the race. With Richard at the helm as crew and Shashi setting the pace, the episode delves into the trials and tribulations of nighttime navigation, the unexpected hurdles after the sun sets, and the mental battle that ensues deep into the endurance test. Through candid storytelling, Stephanie explores how the serene yet formidable presence of Our Lady of the Rockies inspired her to push beyond her limits. The episode also teases the future of the Copper Kings 100, questioning whether it will retain its grassroots "fatass" charm or evolve into a more commercialized race. This week on the HappyCast, we venture down to a place in Georgia that not even the devil would go: The Chattahoochee National Forest for the 2024 edition of Cruel Jewel 100. Considered one of the hardest 100 mile foot races in the country, with over 30k feet of climbing and a 48 hour cutoff, and a buckle that is the size of a small child’s head, Cruel Jewel attracts some of the bravest (and craziest) runners from around the world. As the organization running the race, DUMASS events, likes to proclaim: poor decisions make for better stories. We are joined by returning guest and fan favorite Regina Massingill as she talks us through her experience running the 100 miler, and why this may have been her toughest race yet. Andrew, who continues to refuse to pace Regina, talks about the overall race experience from a crew perspective as well. We are sure to cover every aspect of this race for this one! This week on a special episode of the HappyCast, we examine what it’s like to “run fast and fly young” with Hans Troyer, an up-and-comer in the ultra running game who was shot out of a cannon and made his presence known in the elite scene with one of the most interesting and intense first two months you’ll hear about in ultra running. We examine his memorable performance at Bandera 100k - where he broke Jim Walmsley’s course record, but also somehow later DIDN’T break it. This lead to a last minute appearance at Black Canyon 100k - where unfortunate circumstances right before the race made things more challenging than they should have been, and yet, he still got out to an early lead in an extremely competitive field. And, of course, to make this two month stretch even more interesting, we talk about his serious and unfortunate stint in the hospital that almost lasted two weeks. So sit back and join us in the fast lane as we explore the start of a potentially amazing ultra running career budding before our very eyes. And definitely stick around for the end as we decide to debut an impromptu new segment, “trail math”. And it’s probably not what you were expecting. This week on the HappyCast, we keep things simple and ramble on about all things trail running with our debut of “HappyChat”. In the first segment, Stephanie details her amazing and nerve wracking time at the rugged and remote LOViT 100 in Arkansas. She spent her weekend supporting previous guest and manliest runner in the country, Will Bryant. She describes a harrowing scenario where they both got lost with just four miles left to go. What would YOU do in a situation similar to theirs? In the second segment, the three hosts discuss the use of commonly heard phrases throughout ultrarunning, and the psychology of how runners perceive positive statements during their races in times of emotional lows. Do you enjoy it when others constantly try to build you up when you’re feeling down? Why is it that we can sometimes have a negative reaction to positivity coming from a good place? Do you disagree with Andrew thinking “you looked strong every time I saw you” is overused? What are some phrases and statements you don’t enjoy or DO enjoy hearing out on a run? A divisive segment for sure, but some strong arguments from both sides. And finally, we shoutout three individuals who participated in the end of year nominees. We read off nominations given by Kathleen Hanley (Tyler Hurst) , Lee Ann (Shashi), and Simon Gueard (Nora). We will be reading off more nominations at the end of the episodes from here on out. For this episode of the HappyCast, we talk all things Tahoe 200 with returning guest Garren Hill, who is also joined by the King of Knoxville himself, and the Tennessee 100 mile record holder, Sho Gray. They both recently completed this behemoth of a race held by Destination Trail, which faced additional challenges such as the heat AND snow after the start date had to be moved to July, so we were all excited to hear their experience with this race. We also learn a little more about Sho and his amazing and impressive running background, which includes the best possible way to DNF a race that honestly puts all of us to shame. Then, we hear all about Garren’s and Sho’s journey across Tahoe, which includes hallucinations that rival that of a George R.R. Martin novel, mythical dragon knights, toilet naps, betraying others (not once, but twice), their descent into darkness and fully succumbing to their delusions, the power of tuna mayonnaise rice balls, and EVERYONE'S collective love for TOPO Athletics. We hear about his epic trek across the Highlands, and pepper him with questions that he can only answer with his Farris Flair. Cocodona 250 has quickly built a reputation as one of the longest and most difficult races in the country - but with its generous cutoffs, it’s an experience that many will be capable of undertaking. On the first part this epic Cocodona 250 recap, Andrew goes in-depth for each section of the race up until the halfway point around mile 126. From the Bradshaw Mountains to Mingus Mountain and it’s treacherous descent into Jerome, Andrew talks about the terrain, environmental challenges, and other physical and mental roadblocks that this race provides. Is the first 50k really the toughest 50k in the country? How about the first 100k? Just how rocky and hot is this course? These are just a few questions that have been attached to this race since it’s inaugural year in 2021. We hope these next two episodes will be able to address most questions, as well as provide that in-depth overview of the entire course. And just how many mishaps and hilarious situations does Andrew find himself in during this race? You though he would’ve learned after Moab… Stay tuned for part two next week, as we end the recap and answer many of your questions! On this episode of the HappyCast, we sit down with the low carb runner himself, Michael McKnight. Hailing from Utah, Mike has quickly become one of the most accomplished trail runners around, and a name virtually synonymous with “ultra long distances”. He has won the Triple Crown of 200s (flat-out) and has some pretty amazing FKTs under his belt. We talk about his experience with long distances, nutrition in trail running, his coaching career, and much more. Becoming one of the biggest names in trail running requires a pretty strict regimen…so yes, naturally, we talk about fighting bears. Huge thanks to Kathleen Hanley for stepping in for Stephanie and providing some amazing content. Apparently, Andrew will be racing her during a Colorado Trail FKT attempt. This is a pretty dense, fast, and loose episode - just how we like it. We get wildly off topic from the get-go. We hope you find it just as entertaining as we did. At the end of the episode, Andrew talks about Texas runner Ken Anderlitch and his incredible journey to run across Texas (over 800 miles) to honor his late mother and to support those who struggle with homelessness and substance abuse. He is doing this in conjunction with Pay It Forward SA. At the time of this posting, he is still out there running. Wes is also known for his media presence online, and there is a chance that you’ve seen one of his trail running videos on YouTube, especially if you’ve ever shown interest in doing a 200. Wes creates some of the best, most detailed, and most viewed trail running videos around, and they help paint an incredible overall picture of the races that he does. For this episode, Wes talks about his foray into trail running, his pursuit of wanting to run longer, and the preparation, desire, and challenges of doing 200 milers. He also discusses recommendations and gives out some pointers for those thinking about doing their first 200 miler. And trust us, the distance isn’t as scary as it appears. Wes has been an inspiration and motivation to many others looking to do longer distances, so we hope you enjoy this episode! Be sure to check out his YouTube channel, and his newly-released video on the 2022 edition of the Moab 240! https://youtu.be/tD2Q6ZOksuk YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/wplate Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/midpackelite/ Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/877605 Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review.
