Text Emily! Ever notice how some podcasts, blogs, emails, and posts are seemingly created JUST FOR YOU? Creating content in a conversational way helps us be more relatable and personal. Text Emily! "Find Your Voice". Ah, the classic elusive and vague advice shared far and wide across the internet, amiright? What does that even mean? How do I find it? Where was it before I found it? Is a brand's voice the same as the business owner's personality? Brand Voice is the consistent way you/your business communicate. It’s an art and a science, a careful blend of pacing, rhythm, flow, the words you choose, and the feelings or mood you conjure up. The result is a voice that's distinctly YOU. Your Brand Personality might share attributes of your voice, but it’s more of the human traits that make you and your business relatable, recognizable, and have depth and layers. Personality is the WHO in your communication. Aka the pilot steering the plane. Voice is the HOW in your communication. What kind of plane are we taking to get there? How many stops are we taking? How much fuel do we need? How many people can we fit in here? In this episode, I show you the difference between personality and brand voice and give you some tangible examples so you can start defining, embracing, and expressing yours. 5 Reasons you may struggle to "find your voice" The difference between brand voice and personality What happens when brand voice and personality aren't aligned Examples on common brand voices and how they differ Tips on embracing YOUR brand voice And more! Text Emily! Leave a Voicemail Sometimes, there aren't words. And sometimes, it's OK not to have any. It's ok to do what you need: take your time, step away, unfollow, unsubscribe, unfriend, pause, and NOT share everything you're thinking and feeling. Today, I want to get into an issue I've faced in my own business as I navigate marketing myself on social media when life gets lifey. I don't have the answers, but I can help you find your own answers to: What and when to share How vulnerable and personal to get Which conversations to engage in How to weather the storms on social media including hardship, grief, loss, family, relationships, politics, religion, toxicity, comparison, and so much more! Questions for You to Consider: How closely does this align with my brand's mission and core values? Does my client and customer base care about this? Do I need to address it with them? Am I prepared for potential backlash, and can I/my business handle the consequences? Will sharing this serve or benefit my customers or clients in some way? Am I sharing a unique/helpful perspective or adding to the noise? Why am I sharing this? Is this a one-time statement, or do I need to share about this consistently? How will I respond if people disagree or ask questions? Will I regret staying silent on this? Will I regret sharing this? Outer expectations are things like replying to that text your friend sent you, a client deadline, bringing the dish you promised your sister you would for Thanksgiving dinner... Text Emily! Maybe you've convinced yourself that perfectionism is a good trait. I can definitely see that side of the coin too, trust me... It means you have high standards, attention to detail, care about quality, have a strong appreciation doing things "right". It might reflect your goal-oriented, task-focused, reliable, forward-thinking, innovative side as you constantly look to make things BETTER. And perfectionism can have some unwanted side effects: Procrastination, stopping you in the first place, causing you to question, doubt, overthink, second-guess, never share, never feel ready, never feel smart enough, good enough. It can strain relationships, take up a lot of energy, and can even lead to burnout. What would happen if we turn down the noise of perfectionism just 1%? In the episode, we explore exactly that as we get into: Perfectionism defined by Julia Cameron in her book, The Artist's Way (p.119-120 quoted) The upsides and downsides of being perfectionistic Three types of perfectionism that show up in our business How perfectionism can show up in marketing, collaborations, relationships, and beyond! Covert and overt perfectionism 6 Ideas to help you turn it down 1% at a time And more! Journaling Prompt (from Julia Cameron's Book The Artist's Way) What would I do if I didn't have to do it perfectly? What would I say if I didn't have to say it perfectly? Text Emily! Leave a Voicemail! Comparing ourselves to others can be exhausting and discouraging. People may give you advice to just unfollow, unsubscribe, stop the thoughts in their tracks, think "positive", or focus on all the things that make YOU great... But it's not always that easy to turn the beat around! And sometimes glossing over the experience can cause it to keep popping up again and again and again, rather than teach us to work through it and move to a more productive place. In this episode, I get into how we can move through comparison in a way that allows us to acknowledge and feel it, take action if needed, and bless and release. I don’t want you to compare yourself. I certainly don't want you to swim in the pool of comparison, and I'm going to help you find out you what it's good for! Text Emily! This week's episode might be slightly different from what you're used to here on the Content with Character podcast. I'm kicking off the month of March 2024 with an inspiration-based/storytelling episode. There are also ((of course)) a hefty amount of tangibles, actionables, and practicals so you can apply it for yourself! Today's episode is about finding the sweet spot of immersion in your business and time away, so you can come back with increased focus, productivity, creativity, and excitement! I provide you with: Benefits of exploring more of life outside of business Ideas on how to have TRUE fun ((vs. what we may think is "fun")) Questions you can ask yourself around how much content you need to be creating and want to be creating right now in your business And a little peek behind-the-scenes at what I'm focusing on the first 100 days of 2024 ((and how it's going for me)) Key Takeaways: There’s a lot more to life and to you than being a business owner. Finding time to explore other areas of curiosity, and interest, and seeking enjoyment is a necessity. There will always be more to do, but the question is how much is enough for me, right now? The online entrepreneurial space is noisy and loud. You may feel that you need to keep on doing more, keep adding, keep inventing, creating, and amassing in various ways. You may not need to be creating as much as you think you do. Or doing as much as you are. We don’t always need to be chasing, striving, crushing it, hustling, and creating. You can start exploring all of this in small ways for yourself and approach the consistencies you choose with curiosity instead of a "should do" and "have to" attitude. Text Emily! What is it? How do I fix it? Can YOU help me fix it? Those are three very different questions that people ask at different places in their journey. And by people, I mean YOUR people. Depending on what their level of awareness is, your clients are asking these three different questions and you can’t just answer them all or speak to them all at once. In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about the difference between pain, problem, and solution awareness and how it can help you consider your marketing so you can connect and love them no matter where they are now! Text Emily! Remember group projects? Group projects in school could go really really well, or really really bad. It all depended on who was in your GROUP and how they meshed together. Did you cooperate, communicate, and each pick up some of the workload? Or did everything fall on you or someone else in the group while everyone else sat back and waited for that sweet sweet A+ to fall into their lap without having to lift a finger? Collaborations are the group projects of the business world! And I’d venture to say that almost every business owner I can think of… has to COLLABORATE in some way somehow somewhere along their journey. Collaborations in business include: Working directly with clients Hiring subcontractors or employees Working with other contractors for a client Events and special one-offs (summits, workshops, etc.) Podcast guesting/hosting Speaking engagements Partnerships, joint ventures, affiliate marketing, vendors, and more! In this episode, we’re going to talk about what goes into choosing collaborations as well as being a GREAT collaborator! Text Emily! You make agreements with yourself and others all the time... "But the most important agreements are the ones you make with yourself. In these agreements, you tell yourself who you are, what you feel, what you believe, and how to behave throughout your life." (paraphrase of a quote from The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz) In this episode, buckle up because I’m going to apply the four agreements to how we show up as marketers, content creators, collaborators, and business owners. The Four Agreements is a book/philosophy by Don Miguel Ruiz and a quick read (to the tune of 138 pages with large text). I highly recommend checking it out if you want some simple, actionable, and life-changing perspective. It's packed full of wisdom and serves as a good template for just about anyone who wants to live a better, more honest, conscious, and fulfilling life. Today, I'm applying it to us as business owners as I show you how to consider the agreements you have with yourself, with your clients, in your marketing, and with others you're collaborating with. We'll answer: What it means to be impeccable with your word How to not take things so personally Why business is a whole lot better when we don't make assumptions How to always do your best And more! Text Emily! Procrastination is our creative response to not wanting to do something, being too busy to get to something, dreading something, and even needing everything to be perfect before doing it or while doing it. Contrary to common belief, it's not "lazy" and in fact, procrastination takes a hefty amount of emotional, mental, and sometimes physical energy. In this episode, which is Part I of II episodes on overcoming procrastination, we'll talk about the costs of procrastination as well as some ways to start getting clear on what you need to do to overcome it for yourself! I'll answer the questions: How can we remove the label from ourselves of being a "procrastinator"? Does being a procrastinator make you lazy? How much time does the average person spend a day/year procrastinating? What are six costs of procrastinating? What do people do when they procrastinate? And more! Text Emily! When I was a little girl, my parents had a bookshelf full of personality, parenting, and relationship books. I was a little bit of an odd child and I liked digging into these people-focused books and figuring out who I was as well and how I could love others in my life better. I loved learning about what made people tick individually, and how we all fit together as a big picture. One of the books that caught my fancy was The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. In this episode, I’m going to share with you how you can bring your love language into your content and marketing, and tap into the wisdom of all five love languages to create and connect with others. Highlights of the episode: A summary of each of the five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Physical Touch, Gifts, and Quality Time Practical ways to weave your primary love language into your marketing efforts and content creation Ideas to incorporate all the love languages into your strategy to make people feel more seen, heard, and understood Experiment with them and play with them a bit! I've gotten all hyped up and excited thinking: THIS is the moment. It's all about to blow up, go gangbusters, etc. And it pretty much never ends up like that or works that way. In this episode, I share with you about the magical gift I want us to consider giving ourselves in these final weeks of this year and that is… a pause between reflecting and planning. Somewhere in between the taking stock and the planning, there needs to be a little bit of a nothing. Somewhere for all the creative ideas to bubble up without you planning them all and plotting your course in stone just yet. Somewhere for intention to really spark and then burn into a raging fire inside you, so you have a place to keep coming back to that’s solid inside you when you look at whether or not something is a yes or a no. Text Emily! Research shows that up to 23% of people have been ghosted in the US. Other terms closely related to this phenomenon include "breadcrumbing," "benching," "the slow fade". But these aren’t as spooky as straight-up ghosting. Why is the ghosting technique becoming more prevalent in the online business world with collaborators, connections, clients, and even contractors? In this week's episode, I wanted to take some time and first share some examples of where I see ghosting happen with connections, clients, and collaborators, then talk about WHY it might happen, and then talk about some ways to prevent it. And when not preventable, what to do about it. We get into: Why there's an increase in ghosting due to a rise in technology Who is guilty of ghosting in a professional setting Reasons collaborators, connections, and clients might ghost Ideas on how to prevent or lessen the prevalence of ghosting How ghosting has almost nothing to do with you, the ghostee What to do about it when it happens And more! While you may be tempted to take it personally or write a story about why they ghosted, what it means about the person doing it, or what it means about you... the truth is, there are lots of reasons ghosting happens. The most likely explanation is almost never that the person on the other end is cruel or uncaring, it might actually be the complete opposite! So, maybe we should just let sleeping ghosts lie… Resources mentioned: Desiree Stanley's Pockets of Knowledge Podcast episode featuring yours truly :) Alesia Galati's Listeners to Leads Podcast and Galati Media Website Connect with Me: I’m Emily Aborn, I’m a Content Copywriter, speaker, host of Content with Character, as well as the She Built This podcast. Text Emily! These days, we see a lot of highlight reels. A lot of successes, wins, accomplishments, achievements, celebrations, and not-so-humble brags. What we don’t always see or hear about are the flops, mistakes, and failures. The flailing and wailing that results when something doesn’t go at all how we hoped and planned, or it just doesn’t go… at all. In this week’s episode, we’re going to talk about what to do when we fail. "What to Do When Things Fail" is part one of my October Risky Business Series in which we'll be talking about: failing, what do to when business is slow, horrific stuff I see in content, getting ghosted, and how to make planning less scary. In this week's episode: The definition of failure Facing the facts and sharing the reality of failure as a part of life and business Two of my best-kept failure secrets Four steps to help you fail forward and move with intention Should you ask for outside help to handle your failures? Text Emily! My goal for my life is a successful, kind, simple existence that I feel proud of. One that isn't complex or complicated or confusing. From relationships to business, I'm looking for things I look forward to waking up to each and every day! For me, that's the definition of success. The way to start achieving that, I believe, is to let go of all the things that are getting in the way. Yet, despite my best intentions, I complicate, confuse, and get stuck in situations that I know aren’t right for me. Mismatched situations, "yes's" when I should've said "no". I want this for you too when it comes to your marketing and visibility efforts. I want you to feel SO excited and good and passionate about what you’re doing and how you’re sharing it. So that marketing, visibility, and content creation go from loathsome to FUN! Because you’re just sharing in a way that feels good and what you’re excited about. This episode is all about how to start working towards that as we take inventory of everything we have happening visibility-wise and go through it with a fine-tooth comb. In this episode, I talk about Taking Inventory as it relates to your marketing as we dive into: How and why to set time aside to review your visibility and content How to think about your marketing efforts vs. your content creation How to take stock of everywhere you're visible How to realistically (and honestly) evaluate what went well and why, and what didn't! How to provide more resounding "yes's" and clear "no's" in the future Links Mentioned: How to Hold a Collaborative CEO Day for Greater Success with Emily Aborn How to Grow Your Business Faster with a CEO Day She Built This Episode Host Swap with Kim Dawson Emily Aborn's Strategy Sessions 👉🏻 TAKING INVENTORY CHECKLIST About the Host: I’m Emily Aborn, I’m a Content Copywriter, host of Content with Character, as well as the She Built This podcast. Text Emily! Seems nowadays everyone’s got an opinion. Some say do this. Others say do that. If you spend any time online or on social media, you'll see a lot of definite lines drawn in the sand, all of which say polar opposite things you "should" be doing. It can be confusing when it comes to choosing THIS or THAT in various aspects of our businesses, marketing, and messaging. So, how do you make sense of all the noise and figure out what THIS or THAT is right for YOU? THIS episode will help you do exactly THAT. Text Emily! We're wrapping up our writing and talking about ourselves series with a fun one! How to get your clients, customers, listeners, your people to talk about YOU! If you’re a regular listener, you know that I regularly read listener reviews here on the show. I ask you almost every single week for a review once during the episode and once again at the end of the episode. This isn't because I think I’m so wildly amazing podcaster with the best podcast out there on content creation, and not so I can grow my ego or boost my self-confidence, I ask because I have a mission to help as many people with this content as possible, and as many people with visibility, marketing, messaging. And getting your reviews helps ME reach more people so they too can get their voices heard! If I had to guess… that’s what you want too! You want to help as many people as possible with how YOU help them. That’s one of the many reasons we need to ask people to rave about us, help us spread the word, and share how we help others. In this episode: When does talking about yourself become bragging about yourself? Why ask people for reviews and recommendations Where reviews and recommendations can come from Questions you can ask to make the process simple (and repeatable) How to use the reviews and testimonials Why social proof matters And more! Maybe you’ve heard it both ways - in this episode of Content with Character, let’s settle the debate once and for all! Well, maybe I'll let you draw your own conclusions after you listen... But we will definitely talk about writing your About Page. There are two general camps: The argument that your about page is about you. And the argument that your about page is about your clients. Text Emily! Visibility! It's what this podcast is all about, it's about being seen, seeing YOURSELF, showing up, and it’s a gift... AND it’s not without its challenges. What you do in your business visibility-wise is an ongoing process and evolution. How you choose to show up and get your message out there, be seen, and create a connection is a constant work in progress. I think you learn a lot about your business and propel yourself forward as an entrepreneur AND I think you learn a lot about yourself (and others) and grow as a human and individual when you decide to get visible and show up. Over the past seven years, I’ve experimented in my own business in so many ways with visibility and connecting with others and lived to tell about it. In this episode, I'm sharing five lessons learned along the way and a hefty dose of inspiration for your own visibility journey: What showing up and visibility means to me Visibility takes time and experimentation You surprise yourself (and others surprise you) when you decide to get visible Visibility is a two-way street You'll have some hits and misses When you decide to get visible... you're more visible. Consistency is one of those things that gets a little misunderstood in the online space, and can get confused with its cousin (sister?) frequency. This episode will help you rethink your relationship with consistency and why you might want to give it a second chance, plus some other misconceptions about marketing messages in the online space. And of course, because I'd never leave you hanging, I'll share how to take action and apply it for yourself! We cover: How consistency is actually a really hard word to say and I should've picked something else for the title and topic of this episode What consistency is and isn't What frequency is and isn't What frequency and consistency have to do with one another Three action steps to being more consistent Why being the "best-kept" secret isn't a good thing unless we're talking about beaches and trails How visibility is a two-way street How I'm going to WIN at being the best wife, auntie, dogmom in the world And more! Text Emily! In this episode, I talk about Dandelions and what they have to do with your marketing. We're actually going to get a little bit into gardening too, but we’re going to start with Dandelions. My logo for my business ( designed by Lindsay Taylor Brand Designer of Taylored Image ) is a dandelion. Dandelions have a lot of whimsical memories and meanings for me personally and we can channel their energy, as it relates to our marketing, messaging, and our business' impact spreading far and wide! Dandelions, like wildfire, are representative of how our unique voices and messages can SPREAD and flourish! This easy content framework will help you create a simple plan and help prevent you from making one of the biggest mistakes I see when it comes to people’s content. I get into: Why we should have a little more R-E-S-P-E-C-T when it comes to Dandelions as a flower A simple content strategy that will help your content garden flourish How to consider your foundational content How to consider your helpful content How to consider your personal and inspirational content How to consider your promotional content Giving clear calls to action in a way that's uniquely YOU A reminder of why we need to share promotional content A mistake I see many entrepreneurs make with their content and its impact A month's worth of content ideas And an easy action step to get you started About the Podcast and Host, Emily Aborn: The Content with Character podcast is focused on marketing, visibility, and content creation in a way that works for YOU! Text Emily! Content has so much power when we take a little time on the front end of the content creation process to consider our goals with our marketing content and get clear on the person we're speaking to. I see business owners missing this mark when it comes to their content and messaging by skipping this crucial piece and keeping their content focused on the HERO of the story - the customer/client. This episode will help you gain insights into your clients and customers in a new way so you can speak directly to them and where they are in their journey. Topics covered in this episode: Content is communication. You have to do is communicate clearly to your customers, as YOU to create a bridge. Decorating your cupcake - go from vanilla to the flavor of your creation! Deciphering features vs. benefits in what you offer Who are your customers? Get specific! What are they doing right now? Day in the life? And More! About the Podcast and Host, Emily Aborn: The Content with Character podcast is focused on marketing, visibility, and content creation in a way that works for YOU! Text Emily! What's content marketing really? Content Marketing is using the content you generate strategically to attract new customers and clients, and keeps you TOP of mind. In this episode, we get into what on earth content really means, what content marketing is, whether or not every business needs it, and how it might not be what you think or always thought. We hear the word entrepreneurial buzzwords, like content, a lot, and half the time we don't even really know what they mean. Then we overthink them as these huge concepts or foreign territory and end up getting stuck. This podcast will answer: What's content marketing? What's the difference between content and copy? What's the same between content and copy? Do you need both content and copy in your business? How can you reframe thinking about content marketing so you can get off the overthinking hamster wheel And more! Text Emily! When it comes to visibility, content creation, marketing, new platforms, and doing all the things… it can be easy to just jump into something without making sure that it’s really 100% for YOU! I’ve been there, done that. Now, I ask myself these four questions when considering whether or not to say "yes"! In this episode, I’m going to give you four questions to ask when taking on a new project. When we consider different ways to increase visibility and gain momentum in business and marketing, there are a lot of ideas to get excited about and new things to try. This podcast will walk you through the four questions to ask yourself before taking on a new project: 1) Do I want to do this? 2) Do I have time to do this? 3) Can I do this? 4) Will I do this? You can ask yourself these questions before adding an appointment or event to your calendar, saying yes to a new client. And, they can help you get started in determining whether or not: Something is the right fit for you What you might need before getting started How long you might want to stick with any given thing And what might be standing in your way At the end of the episode, I'll challenge you to take one simple step to propel yourself forward. If, of course, the answer is a resounding "YES"! Text Emily! Welcome to the Content with Character podcast with me, your host, Emily Aborn! This first episode will help you determine if this podcast is for you and what kind of content you can expect on the show. I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to be for everyone. Wanting and trying to get everyone under the sun to "like" me. After 37ish years of this chameleon act in life and business, I realized that... it’s exhausting, it keeps us stuck, and it keeps us afraid. In releasing Content with Character, I’m showing up as my nerdy, wacky, sometimes slightly neurotic, animated, reliable, and creative self because that's what I want to inspire YOU to do too! One thing I see and hear far too often is podcasters, coaches, consultants, small business owners, and solopreneurs who WANT to create more momentum in their marketing, yet they’re trying all of these methods that don’t feel right for them... and as a result, everything feels a bit like throwing spaghetti at the wall. I watch people struggle to create content because they don’t have time, don’t know where to start, don’t feel like they can write, or get hung up thinking they have nothing to say. I hear people who want visibility, but the way they’re being shown to get visible feels icky or disingenuous to them, and that’s exactly why this podcast was created. I’m Emily Aborn, a content copywriter, and a podcaster. I’m extremely passionate about empowering entrepreneurs to get their message and ideas out into the world in a way that’s clear and draws people to work with you who you want to work with too. This podcast will inspire you to take action, to experiment with some unconventional and out-of-the-box approaches to being visible, and I really want to save you time, energy, and headache when it comes to your content creation and marketing.
