Ready to level up your dating game? Or maybe you’re looking to build a deep, long-lasting relationship with someone special. Either way, here’s the first thing you must do to get what you want: Take a deep look in the mirror and be radically honest with yourself. That’s the philosophy that guides our guest this week, certified dating and sex coach Eden Lee Mitelman. On this episode of Bodies by Brent, Eden dives into the complex arena of modern dating and relationship building, offering radically candid stories and advice that will help anyone find success. Eden uses her wisdom and expertise to help guide others through their dating and sex lives in the healthiest way possible. Her coaching style is honest, raw, and unfiltered, and has led to impactful outcomes for her clients. You can find Eden sharing her experience and advice on her podcast, E-Rotic, where she discusses how dating isn’t just about finding someone, it’s about finding yourself. Taught by Eden: Being real with yourself and recognizing your own red flags and toxic behaviors are the first steps to dating success. First dates shouldn’t be dinner dates – casual coffee and walking dates are low stress and great get-to-know-you outings. How to look for social queues and determine the appropriate time to approach someone at a bar. How not to blame yourself if your partner cheats on you, and learning that it’s their problem and not yours. Practicing self love and tough love go hand in hand on the growth journey. The importance of identifying exactly what you want and who you want when looking for a partner. That Sex Chick, Alexa returns to the Bodies by Brent Podcast after her recent trip to Peru, hiking the Inca trail, visiting Machu Pichu, and taking San Pedro in a plant ceremony. The last time she was on the podcast, she set the intention of “wanting to go viral on TikTok” and one of our previous clips did go viral, just not on her TikTok. This made her realize how important being direct with our manifestations is. Alexa made time for us before her women's group, which is much more than just a group of friends. With no longer living in their hometown, the support network of family and community is often hard to come by, but we get to see an inside look at how to create your own community of support filled with love. Alexa then answers questions she often faces as a sex coach and how it pertains to a healthy relationship. The biggest takeaway? Communication is key. Check out her newest venture, Sex Coach Prep School if you’re looking to get the most out of your sex life and relationships. What we learn from Alexa in this episode: How to play the Rose, Bud, Thorn game - and why it’s important Why throwing everything at your relationship makes it stronger How to approach your partner in to “exploring” more Why good sex starts with communication What it takes to build a true community away from your hometown Why you need to be “down” with your partner How finding a partner you “fight well” with is imperative for success Alexa’s Instagram Sex Coach Prep School Bodies by Brent Bodies by Brent: My Community Bodies by Brent: Tiktok Bodies by Brent: Instagram Bodies by Brent: Youtube This episode’s sponsor: Athletic Greens Hosted on Acast. Jill and Jenna are two sisters on a journey, advocating for gut health and sustainable lifestyles. After becoming a three-time All-American softball player, Jill started experiencing IBS symptoms. Countless tests and doctor’s visits later, she was diagnosed as “healthy.” Several years later, after seeing a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, her life completely transformed, and she uses her experience to help others on their journeys to optimal gut health. Jenna’s friends would’ve described her as happy go lucky. She was active and seemed perfectly healthy. Behind-the-scenes, she was in and out of doctors offices, therapy sessions, and more. She had been active in sports despite struggling with scoliosis. In recent years, she has struggled to get her anxiety under control. Today, after embracing holistic medicine, she is pursuing her passion as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. They tell the story of their grandmother’s journey with Alzheimer’s and how that drove their health mission. “I’m really passionate on the difference between being fit and being healthy,” they add. “We want to feel good.” “We grew up with the media portraying skinny bodies as the ideal look.” With the media’s overwhelming push for fitness over health, many people fall into the trap of trying to look a certain way, even if it’s detrimental to their health. Diet, lifestyle, and supplements are an important combination. There are things that can generally be done to minimize gut problems: stress management, exercise, therapy, sunlight, and prioritizing good sleep. Ways to get good sleep include reducing screen time and blue light, meal portion control before bed, regulating blood sugar, and journaling. In their words: “The body always wants to heal. You have to give it what it wants. If you don’t feel good, make adjustments. You have to be your own advocate. No one is coming to save you,” says Jenna. “Be brutally honest with yourself and how you’re feeling. Don’t make every change in one day. Be really picky as to what’s trendy and what’s really going to help you , ” Jill adds. Jill and Jenna share their stories of health struggles and healing, and they talk about the many ways in which people can listen to their bodies to make better choices for their own health, including: ● Making the important distinction between fitness and health. ● Some general ways to manage gut problems. ● Being aware of how the media adds to the prevalence of health problems. ● Managing sleep in order to improve general health and wellbeing. ● Making good gut health decisions to boost your mental health. She has been featured on the cover of Oxygen Magazine, in Women’s Health, Muscle & Fitness, and Shape, she won Miss Fitness America 2016, was a finalist for Women’s Health Next Fitness Star, she has been on Ninja Warrior four times, and she has a degree in Biochemistry. She utilizes her knowledge of biochemistry and the human body to help others reach their fitness, health, and wellness goals. Her training programs also serve as a motivation for women who have been taught from a young age that they’re not strong enough to do pull-ups. “I think everybody should put their kid in gymnastics,” she adds. “They should push males and females to do these things.” People who do pull-ups, or even work towards being able to do pull-ups, derive extensive benefits from this exercise, specifically. Physically, people get into better shape and become fitter, even without necessarily having those as objectives. The process of learning to do pull-ups have weight loss and and improved fitness as a by-product. “It’s not really about the pull-up. It’s actually about the journey to getting your pull-up,” says Angela. She adds that, although there are physical benefits to doing pull-ups, the mental effect of simply being able to do the pull ups are significant as well. “If you do can that, and you realize that you can do that, you can do so much more in your life.” Working with people on their pull-ups, Angela focuses on three things: mobility, stability, and strength. She adds that, during the process, it’s important to have a strong mindset despite all the negative thoughts. In her words: “It’s not a matter of ‘if’, it’s a matter of ‘when.’ As long as you keep showing up, whatever you’re looking for, it’s going to happen, but you have to show up on the good and the bad days.” Angela dives deep into the value of pull-ups and, as a result, overall wellness, both mentally and physically, including: ● Why people should care about pull-ups in the first place. ● What the physical benefits, as well as the mental benefits are of doing pull-ups. ● How to build the mental pathways to be able to do a pull-up for the first time. ● The equipment that you can buy to do pull-ups at home. ● How your mindset is the most important part of being successful in any area of your life. She dropped out of college after experiencing the limitations of the schooling system for the neurodivergent brain, started her first company at the age of 19, and has inspired and encouraged countless women to be unapologetically themselves. Growing up with ADHD, the traditional schooling system doesn’t cater to the gift of neurodiversity. “That quality should be celebrated. There are things that naturally give people dopamine, including playing, exercise, movement, foods, sex, and novelty. In 2010, Brooke discovered that she had colon cancer after a fall in the middle of the street one day. Up until that point, she was suffering from fatigue, shortness of breath, and failing muscles—all things she tried to power through day after day… until she no longer could. Determined to make a change, Brooke doubled down on her “selfish (self-care) quest to be the best me I can be without relying on medications or resorting to invasive procedures.” Somewhere down the line, she studied acupuncture in Austin, during which she also familiarized herself with the intricacies of both Chinese herbal medicine and modern Western medicine. Casey Lepper is a spiritual guide and healer as well as a psychotherapist specializing in individual and couples counseling. She often integrates the spiritual with the psychological in her work to assist others in moving towards their highest potential. She offers a variety of activation services, classes and training, and healings and readings for spiritual healing and empowerment via her brand Clarity Veil. Casey is also the founder of Austin Counseling Balance, where she works with women, couples, and families. “I love breaking apart human behavior and the human condition to figure out why people do the things that they do,” says Casey. She adds that there is nothing like meeting men and women face-to-face and helping them get to the root of their mental, emotional, and spiritual roadblocks. Casey makes the case that we have a personal responsibility to figure out our own issues. We cannot blame the other person for drawing out negative emotions or making us feel unsafe because, when it comes down to it, that’s an inside job. It’s on us to clean our trauma, burden, pain, or wounds within ourselves, and it’s only from that healed place where we can finally enjoy an ideal, long-lasting relationship. Casey utilizes therapy to uncover those unproductive patterns and the factors that led to the emergence of those patterns. She does this by nurturing a safe, private relationship with her clients so that she can see the situation from their perspective. In her words: “We live so close to ourselves that it’s really hard to know what our patterns are without any reflection, and that’s what a therapist does. Therapy is about reflection, and that means showing someone the things they don’t want to see.” Casey unravels the DNA of healthy relationships and offers advice on how to move towards our highest potential, including: ● why supportive relationships are the foundation to a rich and purposeful life ● how to take responsibility for our own issues and clear our trauma ● what to look for in a new relationship and how to best prepare yourself ● how utilizing the Gottman Method leads to healthier relationships ● the gifts that masculine and feminine energy uniquely bring to the relationship ● how to support a parent or older relative struggling with trauma One of the greatest things that can happen for us in life is to find a partner that is along for the same ride, who is keen on growing as a person right by your side. But, as Casey proves in this conversation, finding the right partner starts with taking responsibility for our own personal development. Facing her insecurities around her body image head-on and learning to stop lying to herself and those around her was the first and most important step she had to take in order to finally grow. “Shame hides in the dark, and the only way to release it is to pull it into the light,” says Alli. This begins by telling your story without shame. Healing takes place once you know and accept everything about yourself. You cannot heal secretly. The latest chapter in Alli’s life came when her partner, an anesthesiologist, began researching the history of ketamine as a safer alternative to opioids as pain medication for wounded soldiers. Inspired by the breakthrough studies happening around that time, he decided to open a ketamine clinic alongside Alli. Alli does a deep dive into the wonders of ketamine infusion therapy and Illumma’s noble vision for the industry, including: ● the mental and emotional benefits of ketamine ● how to really decide whether ketamine is for you ● harnessing the true resilience of the human mind ● the close link between childhood trauma and PTSD ● what to expect during your six sessions at Illumma Alli closes the conversation with her thoughts on the future of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. She attributes its recent mass acceptance to the countless veterans who are demanding help, especially within the last two turbulent years. “Within five years, we’re going to have multiple psychedelic tools for people. I hope we can keep the industry as authentic as possible by having patient healing in mind.” Resources Mentioned Connect with Alli Waddell: Instagram Follow Brent Hruska on social media: Instagram | YouTube Connect with Illuma Clinic: <a href='https://www.ill

Samson Odusanya is a coach, healer, and empowerment guide who discovered the power of breathwork in 2014 and never looked back. He says that breathwork grounds him and that, during those moments and in the moments that follow, “everything that mattered didn’t matter anymore.” It is a completely different perspective on life that most people never get the opportunity to experience. Most people are completely unaware of how they breathe. Whether or not they realize it, the way they breathe affects the way they think, act, and feel. In fact, as Samson says, “Everything is built on breath —not a style, not a trend, but breath . And if we can understand the power of our breath as the core , then we can build anything we want on top of it.” Breathing can be thought of as your nervous system’s “remote control”. We breathe on autopilot, often not in the most efficient way. Samson invites us not only to take control but to stay consistent in doing so. By building and maintaining this awareness, we learn how to be in harmony with our breathing and, by extension, everything that extends from this foundation. The body knows exactly what to do if we’re willing to get out of the way. “What I love about breath,” says Samson, “is that there is no end to how deep you can go. There is no end to how far you can go.” After leading us through an eight-minute breathwork session to kick things off, Samson shares the ins-and-outs of the power of breath , including: ● the biomechanics of breathing ● why nasal breathing is so important ● how breathwork can help you free trapped emotions Samson, who also runs a men’s support group, caps off the conversation by touching on how men can overcome common stigmas and get in touch with their emotions, as well as how women can support their men in being men . Miki Ash “is an artist by nature and a yoga teacher by trade.” She began her career at the age of 18 and never looked back. In 2020, Miki launched her own wellness app, The How. This app offers access to a library of her tried-and-tested practices to facilitate your own healing transformation. “Life, pre-yoga, was so different from when I found it,” recalls Miki. “It was definitely a clumsy and accidental beginning.” She admits to being the last person one would consider an athlete. From late, alcohol-filled nights to bouts of depression to a bad relationship, the Miki of yesterday had a long path of healing and growth ahead of her. She was encouraged by her friend's mom to take her first yoga class. The experience was, simply put, “miserable”. And yet, she felt better coming out then going in. Miki kept it up, and before she knew it, she was hooked to the point where she knew she had to become a teacher herself. “I was just going to get a workout and I left falling in love with myself. I want everyone to experience that. Miki shares the most powerful mindfulness practices she recommends to anyone, including: ● the fundamental philosophy and principles of yoga ● what gratitude means to her and how she practices it ● meditation practices for beginners ● her intense and incredibly cathartic eye-gazing meditation session ● why Miki introduced breathwork into her classes ● her morning ritual In addition to the mindfulness practices we discussed today, Miki believes that, bottom line, it’d do us all some good to stop being so hard on ourselves . Making a change starts and ends with a commitment to being kinder to ourselves, a great deal of discipline, and always trusting our inner guidance. CLIENT SPOTLIGHT with Maryam Azarang || Why Age Should Never Be a Factor When Deciding to Workout, Falling Love with Weight Training, & Developing Spiritual Practices | Bodies By Brent Podcast #17 Maryam was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico. She met her husband in San Francisco and the pair moved to Los Angeles where her two kids were born, before finally settling down in Austin. “My fitness journey started when I was born,” says Maryam, recalling that her father had always been an avid runner who continues to run marathons to this day at the age of 65. She was never a stranger to exercise, but had never put the same effort into nutrition and rest as she did into working out. Her first pregnancy was really the period in her life wherein Maryam was able to take a step back and take a closer look at not only her physical wellbeing, but her mental and emotional wellbeing as well. Having her first child motivated her to become more deliberate when it came to her lifestyle. Her second child moreso. At some point, her desire to grow and thrive inside and out eventually led to the two of us meeting. Maryam shares her personal journey of transformation within and without, including: ● how she got out of her own mind and made a point to live in the present ● how she learned to love weight training and the results she got ● the habits she developed aside from working out regularly to see changes ● why age should never be a factor when you decide to start working out ● the spiritual practices Maryam adopted on her journey of transformation Maryam doesn’t believe that you have to be a certain age to start working out, eating right, and sleeping better. With only one life and one body afforded to you, one of the best steps you can take right now to undergo your own physical, mental, and emotional transformation is to find a routine that works for you and stick to it—today, if possible. Tessa is an online fitness coach who helps millennial women reach their goals while becoming bold and confident in the gym. She sits down with me today to debunk some of the most common myths in the health and fitness world. A former college athlete, Tessa had always been passionate about fitness but found her true calling as a trainer upon moving to Los Angeles in 2011 where she spent much of her time creating workout programs at her local Equinox at the break of dawn. She became a certified trainer in 2019 and, shortly after that, transitioned online and never looked back. Listen in as Tessa unpacks some of the most common myths and misconceptions in the fitness world today through the messages she receives from her various clients, including: ● why 1200 calories a day is far too low for women ● how eating more food may be the key to getting you past your plateau ● why lifting weights won’t automatically make women bulky ● the truth about getting “toned” ● why carbs, for the general population, are not “bad” ● why sleeping less for the sake of getting your workout in is a terrible idea ● why calories burned during a workout has nothing to do with your progress Her bottom-line advice for all those looking to finally get started in their health and fitness journey is: “Just start where you can. If you can’t do much, start walking for ten minutes a day or an hour a day. Just get moving. ” Resources Mentioned Follow Trainer Tessa on social media: Instagram Follow Brent Hruska on social media: Instagram | YouTube Hosted on Acast. CLIENT SPOTLIGHT with Annie Bosco || My Experience Training with Brent, How Ayahuasca Helps Give You a New Lease on Life, How to Grow Confidence Inside and Outside the Gym | Bodies By Brent Podcast #15 At certain times in our life, the best plan to have is no plan at all . Annie Bosco is on the verge of flying out of the States to live a nomadic life for the foreseeable future. She sits down to share how Ayahuasca changed her life, as well as her experience training with me. She grew up in Northern California and hopped from state to state over the years before settling down in Austin in 2017. Asked why she decided to dedicate the next phase of her life traveling around Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala, and beyond, Annie simply states that, “Her plans are to not have any plans.” She chose Costa Rica specifically to attend the weeklong retreat Rythmia . It’s her second time taking part in a round of Ayahuasca ceremonies in two years. Her first run had her overcoming many of her pent-up fears, traumas, and blockages following a failed marriage. This time, she intends to engage in a journey of clarity that will shine a light on her next steps in life. Annie reflects on her first Ayahuasca experience, including: ● what drew her to Ayahuasca in the first place and what she had to overcome ● how she forgave the best friend who betrayed her ● why this horrible time in her life turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her ● how Annie reset her life following those ceremonies ● her advice to anyone considering an Ayahuasca retreat Annie then speaks on how she and I met. After having done a surgery a year over the past five years, she was in the market for a trainer in hopes of building back the muscle she lost after a long period of living a sedentary life. Long story short, we shared a vibe, and Annie was able to build a strong base and a new set of skills and habits to stay physically and mentally sharp, all while growing in confidence both inside the gym and outside. Mercy Henderson is the Clinical Director at Drip Hydration, an IV therapy concierge medical practice. She sits down with me to discuss the many benefits of hydration therapy. Without a doubt, health has moved to the forefront of many a mind over the past year-and-a-half. Mercy notes that more and more people are looking for solutions outside of a hospital setting, in which problems are treated and patients are discharged with little regard for maintenance, much less optimal health. “In the hospital,” says Mercy, “it’s sick care, not healthcare. And when we’re paying our premiums every month, it’s not for health—it’s for when we’re sick.” Listen in as Mercy shares how Drip Hydration is changing the game with their mobile services, and does a deep dive into the ins-and-outs and numerous benefits of IV therapy, including: ● NAD: your body’s universal fuel source ● how Drip Hydration has aided many COVID-positive patients ● how athletes can benefit from IV therapy ● how Drip Hydration aims to be the answer to the limitations of bedside therapy “It’s health care,” concludes Mercy. “I want people to feel healthy without having to be completely on empty; without having to wait until they need help.” Resources Mentioned Learn more about Drip Hydration: Website Follow Brent Hruska on social media: Instagram | YouTube Hosted on Acast. On this episode, I sit down with Kelly Thompson, a client and dear friend, to share our respective experiences with Ayahuasca. Kelly had first heard about plant medicine on a podcast and was instantly drawn to the thought of participating in a ceremony. But Ayahuasca, as both of us learned, chooses us —not the other way around. For Kelly, it took almost half a decade after first learning about it before she knew that her “Ayahuasca year” had finally arrived. I felt the call myself for a long time before I knew I was ready. I followed the breadcrumbs until I ran into Kelly, who was being led along the path herself at the same time. Right then and there, taking the plunge was a no-brainer for both of us. Kelly and I reflect on our first shared experience with Ayahuasca, which took place over three nights in a row, doing a deep dive into: ● what it really means to “purge” our body of trapped trauma ● how Kelly watched her body “decompose” and was then reborn ● the taste and physical sensation of ingesting Ayahuasca ● the reassuring voice of Mother Ayahuasca ● how psychedelics can rewire your brain Without a doubt, the greatest gift we received from our Ayahuasca experience was freeing ourselves from blockages that, for the longest time, were obstacles to our growth at a subconscious level. Kelly herself said that she was “doing all the right things” prior to her three-day retreat, from working out to meditating to seeing a therapist. But until her “rebirth” via Mother Ayahuasca, she “still felt all this stuck energy” keeping her from moving forward. Asked for her advice to those feeling stuck today, Kelly says it helps to simply start asking the Universe for signs. Ayahuasca may or may not be the key to your own rebirth and healing, but you’ll never know until you ask , and then listen . Brenda Gregory is a functional medicine nutritionist who works with Integrated Psychiatry Austin and is the founder of Energized Wellness. She combines the science and philosophies of functional and eastern medicine to get to the root of client health complaints, from issues of healthy weight, autoimmunity, dysregulated mental health, and chronic pain. With the belief that food is medicine , Brenda always leads her consultations around diet. She discusses with her clients which foods may be helping as well as harming and finding the best course of action, all while implementing a mindful approach. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: ● [02:24] “I’m always in the deep end.” “I’m careful with my decisions,” says Brenda. “But once I decided this is it , I’m going in—at least up to my neck.” Brenda shares her journey toward better health, which began at birth when she was found to have a severe case of pneumonia mere hours after coming out of the womb. She suffered the lasting effects of a compromised microbiome for the first three decades of her life before being encouraged to go gluten-free. Her life was transformed and it uncovered a newfound passion for nutrition and its effects on the body. ● [11:08] What’s the deal with gluten? “Gluten is the protein portion of wheat, rye, and barley. There is gluten in corn and rice but those don’t seem to be as problematic.” Those with celiac disease aren’t able to eat gluten because it will damage their small intestine. Depending on the person, celiac may cause digestive issues or fluctuations in emotion. Food sensitivities also emerge from foods escaping the small intestine without being adequately broken down due to celiac. Brenda shares how she deals with clients who have gluten sensitivity or intolerance and how she typically structures an elimination diet. ● [22:34] Stress and digestive health Most of Brenda’s clients come to her with either digestive or mental health issues. Brenda approaches each case essentially the same way. “As a practitioner,” says Brenda, “everything comes back to the gut biome. We’re looking at your symptoms, we’re looking at your sleep, we’re looking at your bowel movements.” She even goes in-depth on stressors in their lives, which she says make a huge impact. Brenda combines mainstream Western medicine with traditional Eastern medicine. “I love, love, love herbs for helping to heal the gut,” notes Brenda, adding that she tries to minimize her clients’ dependence on capsulized supplements. ● [37:30] Addressing hypothyroidism through the gut “90% of hypothyroid—underactive thyroids—are Hashimoto’s. Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition. It’s a condition where your immune system attacks your thyroid an

According to Marshall: “The mission of Force of Nature is to build a truly global regenerative supply chain, and the bigger we can grow Force of Nature, the more ranches and farmers that we can work with to help them convert their operation from conventional to truly regenerative. We see ourselves as the connection between ranchers that are doing regenerative practices and the end consumer.” Listen in and hear Marshall’s explanation of the five founding principles of regenerative agriculture, how healthy soil can help reverse climate change, where Force of Nature sources their animals, and his long-term vision for the company and the industry as a whole. Creating a More Inclusive Space for Hardcore Athletes with Laurie Porsch In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Laurie Porsch, fitness instructor, Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner at BETA Academy, and owner of Liberation Barbell Club. Laurie was inspired to start Liberation Barbell out of a desire to be part of a community that is serious about strength and fitness while being down-to-earth and inclusive at the same time. She wanted to create an environment that was particularly welcoming to women and members of the LGBTQ community, who may not usually feel completely at home at many traditional hardcore gyms. The Liberation Barbell community lives by a simple code of conduct: Create a safe space, don’t make anybody feel unwelcome, assume good intent, and if you make a mistake, apologize and amend your behavior. The basis for this code of conduct, as well as the foundation of the gym and community, is dignity , best expressed by Donna Hick’s work and her “Ten Elements of Dignity”. That is literally all we advocate.” “Whatever you enjoy doing for fitness, that’s what you should do, because if you don’t like it, you’re not going to do it.” “Don’t be afraid to try barbell training or BJJ. Do what feels good.” “If you can be lighthearted about what you do, whether you’re designing or running a business, and trying to have fun, everything works itself out.” “The whole concept of yoga is to become one, to unite. One with the Creator, or you seeing yourself as part of the fabric of it all.” “The truths are that we are energy, that we know very little about how our consciousness came to be. We know that we’re really connected to it all. We don’t really know how to explain it. These are truths.” “A guru is a wise teacher that helps you move from shit times to good times.” “Emptiness is nothing; but it’s everything. Nothing has value; but it also has value. How Dr. Amanda Massey Turned Personal Trauma Into A Passion for Performance Optimization In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Dr. Amanda Massey, a sports chiropractor for humans and animals across Central Texas. Her main location is at Tiger ATX in Austin, Texas. After a horse-related accident at the age of 16, Dr. Amanda had to go through a considerably painful period of rehab for a debilitating back injury. It was this traumatic experience through which she gradually developed an interest in becoming a chiropractor. Dr. Amanda’s recovery included her going through a detox diet of smoothies, vegetables, and clean meats while completely avoiding dairy, gluten, and grains. This helped her to reduce inflammation in her body, which allowed her to get off of the massive amount of painkillers she depended on up to that point. She reflects on the willpower needed to get through that particular process, and the benefits it gives to anyone who is in chronic pain. It wasn’t the end of her road to recovery, but it was a huge obstacle that she had overcome. As fate would have it, Dr. Amanda had another accident in college when a horse she was riding during a competition reared straight up as she was trying to get it to turn, causing her to fall off and separate her shoulder and slightly damage her ribcage and back. Luckily, with the help of her chiropractor, Dr. Amanda was able to get back in the saddle within only a couple of months this time around. She continues to ride to this day, though she has eased off the competitions. Listen in and learn the three main factors that create dysfunction in the body, how to improve your fascia health, and best practices for healthier eating. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: ● [00:24] Dr. Amanda’s background ● [05:26] The evolution of Dr. Amanda’s principles as a chiropractor ● [07:20] Keeping your connective tissue healthy ● [14:14] How Dr. Amanda recovered from her first accident ● [23:34] Dr. Amanda’s second horse-related accident ● [33:00] The basics of animal chiropractic ● [38:14] Tips for better nutrition ● [43:12] Dr. Amanda’s favorite thing about Austin Memorable Quotes: “Chiropractors are a weird group of people. But what’s cool about anyone in the holistic healthcare field is, we all unite together because we want to embrace independent thinking, free thinking, the ability to make your own decisions for your healthcare, and looking for more natural options for taking care of your body.” “You never want to stretch a torn muscle. You always want to foam roll it. “Everyone’s bodies respond to food differently, so everyone needs a different diet.” Get in touch with Dr. Amanda at amasseychiro.com Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with health and fitness coach Melissa Gatto. The Ohio native graduated from college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and built up a strong background in a variety of dance forms, from classical ballet, to musical theatre, to tap, among others. Six months following her graduation, she moved to New York City where she danced professionally for the next five years. Upon her retirement, Melissa made her foray into the world of fitness through Crossfit, and eventually made the exciting decision to become a certified trainer. While Melissa loved her career in dance, she laments the intense physical toll it took on her body, not to mention the body dysmorphia she quietly endured as a relatively muscular individual in the professional ballet scene. Even after her retirement, Melissa’s body dysmorphia carried over into Crossfit. She learned to chip away at it over time through therapy, meditation, and journaling in order to “heal old trauma and old wounds, and just let go of negative thoughts around my body and what I feel needs to change”. Melissa also had to work on creating a healthier relationship with food. While she was able to consistently perform as a dancer without much consideration regarding her diet, entering Crossfit in her late 20s was a different story. She might have gotten lean, but she was constantly tired. Melissa experimented with different diets, some leaning her out better than others. Over time, she was forced to consider how nutrition affected her energy levels, lifestyle, and general fitness beyond simply how she looked. Listen in and learn how Melissa practices mindful meditation to keep positive thoughts at the forefront of her thoughts, how she rebuilt her relationship with food after leaving dance, the importance of listening to your body, and best practices for ensuring your body is running on the right type and amount of food. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: ● [00:48] Melissa’s background ● [06:00] How dancing full-time affected Melissa’s body over the years ● [10:15] How Melissa deals with her body dysmorphia ● [14:34] Why Melissa became inspired to train with weights ● [17:39] Discovering the importance of nutrition ● [24:26] How Melissa’s calorie count as a dancer changed as a Crossfitter ● [30:39] Melissa’s philosophy around nutrition and how she coaches her clients ● [40:40] Melissa’s advice for those suffering with body dysmorphia or getting started with their fitness journey ● [42:08] Melissa’s favorite thing about Austin Memorable Quotes: “Find something that you can get lost in and keep improving upon for a long period of time, instead of necessarily always focusing on your looks.” “We can’t always be in a cut . Where we should be living is maintenance .” “I believe in
